describe the crime scene without showing such graphic images. a new report says says fort detrix had an throx spores. the news posts two unreleased reports that show security in 2011 would have allowed any researcher, aid, even a temporary worker to work out of the lab with a few drops of anthrax. outside investigators found that new hires were allowed to work with the deadly germs, including anthrax before their background checks were completed. now fort detrix is where bruce ivans worked. ivans was behind the anthrax attacks. he later committed suicide in '08 as the fbi was closing in. federal prosecutors say security chief at the upper big

branch mine. that was from today's opening statements in the first criminal trial over that explosion. stover was charged with lying to the fbi while they were looking into the blast. his attorneys claim that stover is just being used as a scapegoat. 29 miners died in the explosion at the west virginia coal mine. a virginia bail bondsman is being named a neighborhood hero after recovering a neighborhood boy from the backseat of a car that had been stolen yesterday. a neighbor screamed for help when somebody snatched her 20 #á 2006 pilot, which was parked in front of her home with the engine running and that 2 1/2- year-old boy strapped in the backseat. he jumped in his truck and found the honda pilot about a mile away and went into action. >> i saw the vehicle and walked over to the truck and approached the truck quickly and walked over there and saw the baby in the back and i

noticed the car was still running and grabbed the baby and called 911 and let them know where my location was. >> the mother of the child said she left the car running with her sleeping boy inside to go into the house with just a few seconds to pick up other children for an outing. there is no evidence for child neglect, but the search is on for the search and abandoned it and the boy. >> dc police say five different robberies went down in northwest yesterday. the first, 19th and m. it happened around 1:00 p.m. police say it involves three people with guns. police say two more robberies happened right around the same time. one at 11th and u. the other in the 1200 block. then at 2:30, police say a suspect took off on a bicycle after a robbery in the 1300 block of 14th street. and then ten minutes later, another robbery. this one in the 700 block of fairmont street. that suspect was also on a bike and right now, no word if

there's any connection between all these crimes. >> local cab drivers tell us they are on edge tonight following the slaying of one of their own. 40-year-old domingo was robbed, then shot to death after apparently picking up a fair in prince georges county and driving into northeast. the slayings is the latest example of how dangerous it has come and they are taking steps to protect themselves. >> my time is from 7:00 to 7:00. i don't drive at night. >> how come? >> because it's dangerous. sometimes i look at them and tell them i can't take them, you know. >> a lot of drivers are scared. they are frustrated. it's a very bad situation for all the drivers because they don't know what to expect on their next trip. >> 20-year-old rhode rishad has been charged with murder in that killing. police aren't telling them what led them to sly.

the controversial website stopped publishing at least for now. its founder says wiki leaks is focusing on raising money. that's because the bank of america, papal, and western union have all blocked donations to the organization. and claims that has destroyed 95% of wiki leak's revenue. if the block isn't removed. wiki leaks will collapse by the end of the year. a plea of not guilty from a man linked to an alleged assassination plot to be carried out right here in d.c. mansure entered his plea. he allegedly took part in a plan to kill the saudi ambassador to this country by setting off a bomb. no plot was carried out. the obama administration accuses agents of planning the whole thing. iran calls that accusation baseless. one by one, rescue teams keep on pulling survivors out of the rubble from sunday's earthquake in turkey.

late today, they freed first a man, then a woman from a collapsed building in the hard hit town. earlier today, rescuers found four others all trapped in that same building, including two children and a man who was able to call police on his cell phone. at last report, the death toll reached 279. crews are trying to provide shelter for thousands of people. suddenly homeless. and we are now getting dramatic video of that quake just as it hit. now the video coming into our newsroom, it's from surveillance cameras. it captured the terrible jolting. as you can see, it went on for several seconds. all that shaking followed by frightened people running into buildings into the streets. >> still to come, the weekend's beautiful weekend sticks around for one more day, but how long can the good stuff last? topper tells us when we'll need that trusty umbrella. but first, president obama hits the road to announce a new

in just over one year, americans will head off to the polls to pick our next president. voters want the chance to change how the winners decide. according to a new poll. 62% of americans over the age of 18 want to scrap the

electoral college and elect president's by the popular vote. for the first time, republicans agree with democrats and say that electoral college has to go. five presidents have won elections despite not winning the popular vote and everybody remembers the most recent time, president george w. bush back in 2000. switching to the popular vote would require an amendment to our constitution. and if you are a homeowner struggling to pay that mortgage, the white house may be able to help you keep your house. president obama travels to nevada to outline a brand-new program that would reduce mortgage payments for as many as a million households. it would extend an existing program that is designed to help homeowners refinance with much lower interest rate. >> the barrier will be lifted that prohibits responsible homeowners from responsing if their home values have fallen so low that what they owe on their mortgage is 25% higher than the current value of their home. >> now this program does not

need the okay from congress. the government will issue details to the banks next month and homeowners could start submitting new applications by december 1. >> tonight, an outpouring of generosity for a needy northern virginia man. we first met warren mitchell last week when we were doing stories about the ax food pantry. mitchell washes cars for a living, but his power washer was stolen from his truck. peggy fox picks up the story from there. >> it was overwelming. it was like, man. >> that is warren mitchell describing the midnight phone call he got from a stranger last night. a man named ken buyers who lives in reston. it was a call that would turn his despair into opportunity. >> i just felt sorry for him because of the situation, you know, somebody stealing his means of making a living. >> he is talking about warren's power washer that somebody stole over the weekend. 9news now featured warren last week washing our satellite truck. we hired him after he shared

his story about his family and others who depend on the ax food pantry. it closed because it ran out of food. the community responded with overwelming support. now a similar turn around has happened for warren. ken buyers wanted to give warren his power washer. because warren's pickup needs brakes, we drove to buyer's home in reston to pick it up for him. delivering it to warren in woodbridge felt like christmas morning. >> unbelievable. look at that. >> what do you think? >> i can do my thing. i'm so grateful. i don't know how to tell you that i am shocked. i'm excited. i'm super excited. >> warren wanted to start it up right away, washing another 9news vehicle. warren's new power washer is a lot stronger than his old one. he'll be able to expand his business beyond cars to mobile homes, vinyl siding, decks, and even concrete. >> here's the message ken

between fredericksburg into richmond. but live doppler 9,000 shows a little bit of activity in leesburg and loudoun county, up 270 in frederick and south of 66 in fauquier county and just to the west of fredericksburg. everything is pushing off to the east at 15 miles an hour. temperatures are great. 64 downtown. 62 in rockville. 65 in beltsville. some 50 50s here and there. 57 in leesburg. but 60 in sterling. so we have a cold front that will move through tonight. but actually, it will end up breezy and cool overnight. a terrific tuesday. even milder on wednesday and yes, find your umbrella for thursday. for tonight, early shower or sprinkle and then breezy and cool. 46 to 52. winds will become northwest at 10 to 15. that's a signal the cold front gone through. temperatures inside the beltway in downtown, 50s. 51 downtown. but plenty of 40s elsewhere. 45 in rockville. 46 in college park and bowie.

even down south, 48 in waldorf and mid 40s in fairfax and reston and fairfax and sterling and only 43 in leesburg and 43 in manassas. now by tuesday morning, great. mostly sunny and cool. you'll need your sunglasses. 40s and 50s. winds light and then by afternoon, mostly sunny and pleasant. just spectacular. high temperatures, upper 6 0áz. winds remain light at 10. so we'll break it down for you. 46 to 52 to start. then 58 to 63 by noon with sunshine and 64 to 69 by evening under mostly sunny skies. pretty good deal. the next three days. a little warmer on wednesday. clouds come in, 70, and then yes, thursday cooler with rain showers and perhaps even a thunderstorm temperatures in the low 60s. next seven days, friday we get a break. it's dry. the clouds return. only 56. then just a downright cold rain on saturday. 50 degrees. i think it will be snow west of

tomorrow morning, what teens need to know before they hit the road. plus, a 5th grader's quest to get a slave on the stamp before he goes to school, he'll tell us the story. then the dangers of secondhand tv watching beginning at 4:25. well in the mail bag tonight, last week's story involving a teacher accused of abusing her first graders, choking them in fact. six of those kids testified against her in court, but she was still acquitted by a jury last week and mark, who says he's been a teacher for 17 years thinks the kids were likely telling the truth. one thing that i've learned from children is that when you ask, they will usually tell you the truth about what goes on with everyone else. they hesitate only when it comes to their wrong doing for fear of getting in trouble. on the other hand, i do understand what it's like to get angry enough with other people's children that you want to put your hands on them. in no way is it acceptable to actually do it, but i understand the frustration. you know, i'm sure there are a lot of folks that can relate to

that statement, mark, not good to do. in the meantime, looking pretty darn ragty. losing to a team was only victory. on his facebook page, ben writes this, in the words of denny green, they are who we thought they were. a 7-8, 8-8 type team. in the words of johnny carson, you are correct, sir. and david elaborates on that. get a good job, but demonstrated that just like grossman, he cannot take over a game. we need to draft a franchise qb. both grossman and beck are good qb's with a good running attack, but neither have the tools to be more than serviceable. qb needs to be the top priority in next year's draft. campbell, remember him, not a great quarterback is better than both of them. you know, i'm sure coach shanahan knows these things. will we draft high enough to
