oakland, california, more violent protests. police used tear gas against hundreds of protesters. last night's clash was a series of standoffs between demonstrators and police. earlier in the day, some 100 protesters were arrested. robert lyles of our san francisco station kpix has our report. >> within minutes, the sound of explosions, tear gas canisters rocketed into the crowd of at least 800. >> protesters were not being violent. they provoked protesters. >> she shot tear gas into the crowds. women, children, grandfathers, all standing in the same spot. >> ridiculous. no need to do it. they weren't doing nothing but talking.

>> reporter: one tear gas canister appeared to slam into the skull of a creme. his friend carried him away. main library before rush hour with a demand to release some 70 demonstrators arrested during the raid on the plaza. they were snaking through the streets of downtown oakland, but at eighth and washington, the peace was prone. police fired grenades and rubber bullets at demonstrators who pushed back demanding the lease of two men detained while marching. the confrontation drew so intense, police used clubs to turn the demonstrators back. at this hour, there have been 102 arrests. police tell us two officers have been injured. in oakland, i'm robert lyles, for cbs news. meanwhile, we go to atlanta now. overnight, police remove occupy wall street protesters from a local park. protesters who set up in tents were told to leave woodruff

park. more than 50 demonstrators protesting corporate greed was arrested. there was no violence. most americans have heard something about the occupy wall street movement. a majority of americans say neither the president or republicans in congress have a clear plan for creating jobs. only 38% say the president has a clear idea for creating jobs. just 20% say the same about republicans in congress. job creation and ideas about fixing the ailing economy dominate the campaign season. today, the president unveils his plan to help those with student loans lower their payments. meanwhile, texas governor rick perry is now on board with incorporating a flat income tax. we go to susan mcginnis in washington with more on all of this. >> reporter: the president is in denver today where he will make than announcement of help to college graduates through another executive order. meanwhile, his gop challengers

are just trying to stay in the spot. >> hello, colorado! >> reporter: president obama hit the fund-raising circuit in denver trying to drum up support for his campaign. >> if you thought the last election was important, then wait until you get a load of this election. >> reporter: it was one of six fund-raisers scheduled during his three-day western swing. the president wraps up the trip today at the university of colorado where he'll announce another executive order, this one aimed at helping millions of college graduates pay back their student loans. in california tuesday, he stopped at the tonight show with jay leno and admitted he is not paying much attention to the gop field. >> i'm going to wait until everybody is voted off the island. >> really? >> reporter: with the iowa caucuses just ten weeks away, gop candidates are doing everything they can to stay in the race and energize their campaign. >> as president, i'll create at least 2.5 million new jobs. >> reporter: rick perry is launching this 30-second spot in

iowa today. it comes just a day after the texas governor unveiled an economic plan that includes a flat income tax, a lower corporate tax rate, and the option of private social security accounts. but according to a new cbs news/"the new york times" poll, perry has a lot of ground to make up. one time front-runner is in fifth place, behind herman cain who surched ged to the top over romney. terrell? >> a long way to go there, susan. susan mcginnis in washington for us this morning, thank you. >> a pleasure. the occupy wall street protests might have a reason for their anger. a new report from the congressional budget office says incomes of the wealthiest 1% of americans nearly tripled since 9/and 2007. middle class incomes grew up 40%

and the 20% at the bottom of the economic scale saw income growth of only about 18%. also a cbs news/"the new york times" poll founds most americans believe the economy is getting worse. norah o'donnell sat down with treasure secretary timothy geithner yesterday and asked if americans are right to feel that way. >> it's still very tough out there. the people are very frustrated and still hurting a lot. >> reporter: but is it getting worse? >> the economy as a whole? the economy is not going to fast enough. >> reporter: are you qingsed we have hit rock bottom? could there be a second recession? >> i think the strength of the economy right now depends on two things, it depends on how europe is in resolving their financial chronic and people in washington, if congress does not act on these proposals in the president's jobs act, taxes. up for most americans and most businesses and growth be weaker and more americans out of work longer. >> reporter: did the president take his eye off the ball on jobs?

>> absolutely not. he was doing things that were deeply difficult politically for him. >> reporter: but people say he was focused on health care, not on jobs in the economy. >> we were passing a recovery act that made huge investments of getting americans back to work and start economic growth. he was rescuing and the automotive industry and fixing a terrible damaged and broken financial system. those were all about jobs and about trying to protect the economy from a devastating crisis. >> geithner urged republicans to join democrats in helping the economy to improve. geithner says it hinges on what happens in europe. 600 billion dollar rescue package to end the debt crisis in the euro zone. the plan calls no taxpayer money to be used in that bailout. on the cbs "moneywatch" this morning a mix day for most stocks in asia. traders waited to see what

happened in europe. nikkei lost .02%. the nasdaq was down 61. a prominent former goldman sachs board member is expected to surrender to federal authorities in new york today. rajat gupta is accused of providing information that allowed a convicted former billionaire hedge fund manager earn $1 million. there is hope in housing markets. home prices rose slightly in august for the fifth straight month. the biggest price incrisis were in washington, chicago, and detroit. home prices fell the most in atlanta and los angeles. if you're the parent of rah college kid, this is not news to you. cost of college is going up. a report published by the college board shows an average instate tuition and fees of four-year public colleges rose an additional 8.3% compared to a

year ago. nationally, the cost of a full credit loan is past $8,000, that san all-time high. consumer reports are out with this year's auto reliability scores. the three brands most likely to be reliable. the three least reliable. hurricane rina is bearing down on mexico's popular coast. 250 miles southeast of cozumel. tourists and residents are urged to evacuate. rina is expected to strengthen to a cat fegory 3 storm. coming up on the morning news, president obama on the death of moammar gadhafi. plus, the frantic search continues as more survivors are pulled from the rubble in turkey. but first, scott pelley with a preview of tonight's "cbs evening news."

are dealing with gadhafi's death. >> reporter: so far the new libyan government has shown little special in getting to the bottom of the matter. more than 300 bodies, some with their hands tied behind their back, were collected from a cross search and buried in a mass grave. libyan officials have been slow to front accusations atrocities by their fighters despite repeated calls for them to do so. there are no names in this graveyard, only numbers. 572 so far and still counting, that's because the graves contain the bodies of alleged mercenarie mercenaries. many were killed in the fighting but some admit they were summarily executed. the governor of this prison in misrata thinks that amounted to justice. there was no mercy for mercenaries this shaikh says. the nearly 5 hundred prisoners he holds seem well treated but this man said that in another prison, he had been brutalized. they just assumed you were pro

here's a look at the weather in some cities around the country. it is going to be a very messy commute in parts of colorado this morning because of, guess what? snow! take a look. denver getting its first snow of the season and parts of that state could get up to two feet. some of the snowfall has already turned to rain in some places. time now for a check on the national forecast. the latest satellite picture shows thunderstorms across the ohio river valley and another storm working its way through the rockies while the west coast remains mostly clear. snow storm is moving through the rockies toward the southern plains. storms and scattered showers will work their way into the northeast. and the northwest, that coast could see -- maybe will see showers by the end of the day

a violent confrontation overnight in oak lapped, california. police use tear gas to sgurs hundreds of occupy wall street protesters. at least five demonstrators were arrested and several other injured. it was the fifth time over the course of several hours that police were forced to break up the crowd. and president obama wraps up his three-day western trip in colorado today. he'll announce plans to help college grads consolidate their loans and lower their payment. the trial in the doctor charged in the death of superstar michael jackson continues morning. lawyers for dr. conrad murray are expected to bring in witnesses who will talk about how good a doctor he was. jackson's nurse sherri lynn lee testified. >> he looked at me and i said i have a lot of difficulty sleeping. i've tried everything and what i need is something that's going to help me fall asleep right away and then he went more into
