12:16 pm
protective as you think. here's more. reporter: paul wittee is here to get the flu shot, in order to keep his nearly 2-year-old twins healthy. >> it's miserable when they're sick. you don't want to be a part of it or part of the reason that they're getting sick. reporter: about 100 million americans will get the flu shot this year, but a new study shows it may not be as effective as you think. the study in the journal of the lancet shows over the past four decades the shot only kept the flu away from healthy adults about 59% of the time. but researchers say the nasal spray vaccine for children under 7 wards off the flu 83% of the time. >> young adults and older children have the best immune response to the vaccine. and older patients have always had a weaker immune response to the vaccine. reporter: the centers for disease control recommends that everyone over six months old get vaccinated for the flu, and doctors say this study doesn't change that. >> besides washing your hands and general healthcare

measures, there's nothing that will prevent influenza short of the vaccine itself. reporter: paul says any chance to keep his kids healthy is worth it. >> those are pretty good betting odds, 59%. i'll take those odds in vegas. reporter: and the effectiveness of the vaccine is always a gamble since flu strains can change year to year. >> while the study shows the nasal spray is very effective for younger kids, the cdc does not recommend one vaccine over another. metro is trying to reassure montgomery county leaders that it is working on its escalator problems at the bethesda metro station. people who go up the two broken escalators watch jealously as riders headed into the station gladed down on the only working escalator. so we took the blood pressure of some people when they finished climbing those stairs. keep in mind that a normal blood pressure reading is about

120/80. reporter: 128/72. >> at 3:00 p.m. today? >> add 3:00 p.m. late see what you're running now. >> no [ bleep ]. quote me. >> do you know what you normally run at? >> 120/70. >> you're at 140/30. >> what's my pulse? >> 110. >> that's a lot. >> well, in case you're wondering, there are more than 200 steps on the bethesda metro escalator. >> wouldn't it make sense if that one escalator was going up and you walk down, it seems to be a lot less work walking down than up. >> well, yeah, but somehow they couldn't get it to work that way. let's get moving on weather. we got a few clouds out there, some sun south and a few showers north. that's made a big difference in temperatures across the region this noon hour. late show you the day plan -- let's show you the day planner. for the rest of the afternoon, mostly cloudy skies, temperatures will try to get toward 70.
12:19 pm
i'm afraid the clouds will limit us here in town. south of d.c. already touching 70 in a few spots, winds out of the southwest generally 10 miles an hour, at times it'll gust to 15. this evening a spotty shower can't be ruled out. by 7:00 we're down to 64 and 9:00 p.m. 62. going into the 40s and low 50s again tonight and then cooler air coming in. late go back 12 hours, we'll show you the rain that hit pennsylvania, ohio and west virginia. that has been weakening, but still holding up enough, as we look at live doppler 9000hd, showers from baltimore, bwi, approaching straussburg. we'll zoom in and show you a little bit close here, south of washington, if this continues to hold together, you may see it in charles county by mid afternoon. but this stuff has not been moving very quickly and, again, the area has been weakening as it moves off to the south and east. see upperville over toward middleburg, a little bit heavier shower there coming up toward dulles, so if you're going down the greenway there out of ashburg, you're probably
12:20 pm
going to run into that waterford, leesburg, some of those showers which have extended into montgomery county, not quite to bethesda, but rockville seeing a couple of sprinkles there, potomac, knocking on your doorstep and a heavier shower just north of laurel over towards jessup, all of this moving east/southeast. a couple of us are going to see some rain in spots during the next few hours. as far as the temperatures i was talking about, it's only 54 in fredrick, but it's 72 in fredricksburg, cambridge at 70. 57 leesburg with those light showers. and here in washington mostly cloudy and 62 and a south wind at 14. but we're looking at a lot of cold air out to the west and north of us. in the rockies here, notice the cold? it's snowing in denver and in the 30s, quite a snowstorm going on there. they're going to pick up one, maybe two feet in the mountains, maybe locally a foot in the denver area, but that storm is moving east. the cold is going to follow it. so while we've got some showers around here and there, on the
12:21 pm
futurecast we're going to see more chances of showers as we go into the night and into the day on thursday. and then the colder air -- here's that rain tomorrow. the colder air is going to be following it especially as we head into tomorrow night and friday. and if a storm system comes toward us saturday and doesn't stay south and east of us, saturday is going to be a cold, wet day. today we'll make a run toward 70, a spotty shower or two. tomorrow more rain, especially in the morning. we start in the 50s, we get into the 60s in the middle of the day, but i think we're dropping back into the 50s late. friday 53. and then saturday potentially will be a cold, wet day in the mid-40s and then dry and chilly sunday, monday and tuesday. stick around, 9 news now at noon will return in just a moment.
