this is a young woman who struggled to survive. the state says brittany norwood used six to eight different weapons in the attack. one that may have lasted as long as 20 to 30 minutes. norwood allegedly used a hammer, a knife, a bar designed to hold store merchandise and even box cutters. she allegedly slashed murray's rear to imply a sexual assault. this autopsy picture shows the multitude of wounds on the top of murray's head. the courtroom was packed and after days of speculation, a stunning defense stranggy emerged. said defense attorney doug wood, she is not guilty of first-degree murder. jayna was killed by britney, it was not premeditated, not deliberate, there was no malice. but norwood allegedly staged a crime scene after the killing. she was found tied up and on the floor with self-inflicted wounds most of them superficial. at the end of the day a police

officer testified norwood had slashed at the crotch of her own pants exposing her genital area. later shield say she was sexually assaulted. >> reporter: joining me now is our legal analyst to talk more about that defense strategy. what do you make of that? >> stunned. they basically admitted the murder. she admitted to killing her. we had a fight and i lost it. that's all they said "i lost it." they admitted murder in the second degree. they are trying to get out of life without parole. they admitted the murder. they admitted almost murder in the second degree. >> jim, thank you so much for your insight. one more note, derek. prosecutors say that an employee at the apple store next door heard fighting, yelling with two women, heard a sound that she thought was the sound of furniture moving. then somebody heard a voice.

a woman's voice saying oh god, please help me. she went and got her store manager. he pounded on the wall but no one followed up. testimony continues tomorrow. live from rockville, andrea mccarren, 9news now. >> this is just day 1. thank you, andre a. >> you bet. in frederick county tonight concerns about the way local teenage, may be treating homeless people. >> i'm lindsey mastis in frederick, maryland. the homeless that spend a lot of time here in carroll creek say they are being brutally attacked by teens. police say it is a trend that started this summer. >> it has been miserable. this year has been the worst i have ever seen. >> reporter: jerry fletcher says he has lived on the streets of frederick for years. he says groups of teenagers are targeting homeless men and women. bill boyd said he has seen his friends attacked. >> pulled a knife out on somebody. >> reporter: this type of cruelty has been captured on video in other parts of the country and uploaded to youtube. lieutenant patrick grossman says many times teens will participate because of peer

pressure. >> knowing that they are a juvenile. >> reporter: police have stepped up foot and bike patrols. next month they plan to install security camera is. i'm lindsey mastis, 9news now, from frederick, maryland. the obama administration working to help college students manage their student loan debt and take a look at what it has become such a huge concern. last year college students took out loans totalling more than $100 billion. the first time it ever reached that amount. then the outstanding debt for student loans will top 1 trillion-dollar for the first time this year. that far exceeds the number of credit card debts for americans what you see right there stands at $793 billion. >> we are going to make these changes work for students who are in college right now. we are going to put them into effect not three years from now, not two years from now. we are going to put them into effect next year because our economy needs this right now

and your future could use a boost right now. >> the president's plan reduces the maximum required payment on student loans to 10% of their annual income. he said that could translate to payments that are hundreds of dollars lower a month for 1.6 million americans. our bruce johnson talked with some current and former students who are struggling with this massive debt. this is like the second biggest debt that most americans have. second only to their mortgage. >> consider this. rene tipett has four daughters that graduated from college. they owe over $300 in student loans. we didn't even have to leave the building to find people that owe money. >> reporter: a senior at the university of maryland. the communications major and channel 9 intern doesn't have a job lined up just yet but she

knows she will have a student loan to pay back. >> the president's plan how we understand it initially is it would cap the amount you pay back to no more than 10% of your income. what do you think? >> it would help students like me. >> how much do you owe at this point? >> about 25,000. >> director and part-time student at george mason university and a newly wed with student loans. >> being an older student all my money is going to other things like we are looking for a house and all that. so anything that would take the load off would be great. >> about 1.6 million americans could see their payments go down. >> reporter: president obama says the average college graduate owes $24,000 in student lones when they finish school reducing the maximum required payment on those loans to 20% of income beginning next year gives the president high marks on d.c. area campuses. >> i think that's great. hopefully it will help me and

all students. >> here on the campus we couldn't get through to the financial aid office. some of the students estimate 80% of their classmates are here on student loans. can't expect any financial help from their families. >> hopefully i will try to secure a job before i leave so i don't have to worry about finding a job and having to pay. but i am concerned about it. >> now, a footnote. the president's plan might lower that monthly payment but it doesn't erase any part of that student loan debt. you've still got to pay that back in full over time. >> which brings us to the information that we are going to have on our website because if you are having trouble making those student loan payments you do have some options. more at wusa9.com. just click on "consumer." virginia's presidential primary still months away but one of the leading republican candidates is already schmoozing and raising money in our battleground state. >> i'm bruce leshan in fairfax. mitt romney and virginia governor bob mcdonell side by side. could we be looking at a potential republican

new breed of broccoli special grown to contain two to three times the normal amount of the nutrient believed to ward off heart disease by lowering cholesterol. later this fall the broccoli will be rolled out across the u.s. i know you like broccoli. you'll be picking this up. so if you're a college how would you like to live on a cruise ship for a semester. about to happen for some students at st. mary's college. cleanup crews are cleaning up the mold, 350 students are now living on a ship and in some hotels some 20 miles away. so the college has come up with a creative solution. turn a cruiseship into a dorm. >> started out as a lark and got more realistic as we went on then when they told me it wasn't going to cost any more than the hotels that was kind of a seal the deal for us.

oakland city hall in california. police used tear gas to clear hundreds of people from that area yesterday and 75 ended up under arrest. this led to other confrontations between the occupy protestors. are they concerned about their status? >> reporter: i have to tell you first they are concerned a bit when they look at all these arrests about the movement nationwide but here at home, you know, the protestors are comfortable obviously as you can see. they have an extended permit here at freedom plaza and they say they have been getting cooperation by police. today's action a rally outside a u.s. chamber of commerce. >> the fraud corruption that goes on in this building has to stop. >> obviously a lot of frustration in our country right now. and that's a result, direct result of the economic situation we find ourselves in. >> reporter: with heavy police presence but no police action. >> the police here have been

emergency messages about severe weather that had people in our newsroom jumpy. >> supposed to be an internal test not from sterling. >> national weather service. >> headquarters in silver spring. and they it put the word test in the body of the warning but they encoded it wrong so it triggered all of our alert systems and it went out and caused quite a stir. >> it was from headquarters in silver spring. all right, let's take about the next batch of showers because we got rid of one batch earlier. now see another batch out to the west of us, ohio, kentucky, about to enter west virginia. and this will more than likely about our wet morning commute on thursday. rest of the showers are pretty much history. generally less than a 10th of an inch rolled through the metro area earlier this afternoon. temperatures really still

fairly mild really. 61 in arlington. 62 downtown. 61 in college park. some upper 50s. go up 270 to rockville and gaithersburg and we are looking at upper 50s towards reston and sterling. but the cold front hasn't moved in so the colder air, cooler air not coming in until tomorrow afternoon and evening. but we are, nor showers on the way. breezy and mild overnight. more showers thursday in time for the morning commute. much cooler on friday. and really more like winter on saturday. now, we talked about this on monday and on tuesday the same storm in denver in the rockies could bring us cold rain here saturday and perhaps some snow in the mountains and perhaps some snow pretty close to the natural area. mostly cloudy, breezy and mild tonight, showers tapering off. pretty much have except for southern maryland. lows between 50 and 55. winds southwest at 10 to 15. so if you're inside the beltway, downtown, we are talking mid-50s really. low 50s in gaithersburg and rockville, 52 in reston and fairfax and 52 out toward bowie. tomorrow morning look for more

showers. mild and breezy. 50s and 60s. winds southwest 10 to 15. and then by afternoon good news is the showers will end early in the afternoon. bad news, winds will pick up. high temperatures between 60 and 65 and northwest wind 10 to 20. will drive in cooler air tomorrow night and especially on friday. your day planner, showers to start. 50s. 56 to 61 by noon. maybe some leftover showers by noon but i think most out of here by evening. 61 to 66 by 5 p.m. next seven days we dry out friday. kind of cool. texts in the mid-50s. then right now we will say a cold rain on saturday. temperatures in the 40s which means 30s in the mountains. bright but brisk on saturday. excuse me, on sunday. and hallowe'en. temps going into the low 60s by this time next week. >> making sure those trick-or- treaters stay warm and dry. >> that's the most important thing. the redskins are back on the field. they are desperately trying to turn this ship around.

a couple of rough weeks for the redskins. dropped three of their last four games, fallen out of first place in the division and looking ahead the schedule doesn't get any easier. the redskins were back to work today preparing for a well rested buffalo bills team. time to work on catching all those holes created by those injuries and getting the next man up ready to go. today for the first time mike shanahan reacted to the news that the face of the franchise chris cooley is done for the season. >> every time somebody goes on i.r. it is tough. i think with chris he knew he had a chance to come back. when he talked to the doctor it was in his best interests and usually when it is in the team's best interest it is in the player's best interest as well. >> london fletcher did not practice today. resting his pulled hamstring he suffered sunday. if he can't play this coming
