we begin with the u.s. economy. some signs of growth though not enough to relieve the highw unemployment rate. the dow jumped nearly 340 points yesterday. for october it's up 11%, that is on track for its largest one-month percentage gain in 25 years. ashley morrison is here in new york with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: asian markets picked up where wall street left off. the eu debt deal put many overseas investors in a buying mood. hong kong's hang seng was up almost 2%. here at home, the month is so good for stocks some are calling it rock tober. technically, the economy has recovered from the recession. our gross domestic product,

that's the total value of all the goods and services in america, hit 13.3 trillion dollars in the third quarter, surpassing the previous peak set before the previous economy went south in 2007. there is plenty of other good news. the huge rally on wall street has pushed stocks into positive territory for the year. consumer spending was up 2.4% last quarter, the biggest jump in more than a year. and retailers are forecasting a happier holiday season projecting almost a 3% sales increase, that is better than the average for the past decade. but there is also plenty of bad news. unlike previous recoveries, we are still not seeing the positive signs where they are needed most. unemployment is expected to stay high for quite some time. consumer confidence is at its lowest since the recession. >> i think we are very vulnerab vulnerable. >> reporter: economist mark zandi says that will have to change for businesses to start

hiring. >> until that happens our economy will be fragile and at risk of anything going wrong. we will back into a recession. >> reporter: foreclosure jumped 15% with millions of homeowners in trouble, it could be years before we are able to dig ourselves out of the hole. a word of warning about the gdp numbers everyone is getting so excited about. the economy grew 2.5% last quarter which was a major jump, but it's nowhere near enough to say we are out of the woods. for that, we would like to see 4% or higher. >> cautious optimistic at this point. ashley morrison in new york, thanks. a candlelight vigil held last night in oakland for scott olson. he was the war vaernt weteran w injured in slashes with police. olson is shown being carried by

other protesters through tear gas. he was struck in the head by an unknown projectile. >> he actually can communicate. he can make signs. he can write. he clearly understands what we are saying. huge neurological improvement over what he was when he got here. but he is still having trouble articulating words. >> reporter: last night, there was a vigil in nashville. overseas, another miracle rescue in turkey. earlier this morning, about 100 hours after sunday's massive earthquake, a 13-year-old boy was pulled alive from beneath a collapsed building. the quake killed at least 570 people and injured 2,300 others. it was another cold and wet night in turkey that hampered rescue efforts. some 2,000 buildings have been void. more than a half dozen debates between the republican

presidential candidates are scheduled. in an unusual move, texas governor rick perry may be a no-show. susan mcginnis is in washington with that. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. yes, perry's advisers are regrouping and trying to figure out the most effective way for him to spend the next eight weeks and they may be agreeing with those who sail tying the debates are not doing rick perry any favors. >> rick, i'm speaking. i'm speaking. >> reporter: following several weak performances and a slip in the polls, the texas governor is considering skipping some upcoming debates. he hasn't committed to any other debates. the rest of the gop field was quick to criticize him. >> i don't see how somebody can say that they can't debate rick santorum or newt gingrich or ron

paul but they will be ready to debate barack obama. >> reporter: perry has long admitted he is not a strong b t debater. all of the gop candidates have their work cut on foe mor them. he still leads every single republican rival. at an education forum on thursday, michele bachmann attacked aimed at helping -- >> it is unwise for the president to make the suggestion he did. >> reporter: but the president says he is not paying much attention to the gop pack. last night at a restaurant in washington he had dinner with four supporters. two retired teachers, a postal worker and a small business owner, all won a campaign contest to share a meal with the president. now the obama campaign flew in those four winners from four important states, alabama, minnesota, indiana, colorado, all states important to the

re-election campaign. >> yep. it is up and going already for 2012. susan mcginnis in washington, thank you so much. in washington, house of representatives is doing some skipping of its own. the house announced it will be in session for just 109 days next year, an election year. last year the house met 127 times. the criminal case against john edwards is headed to trial. edwards is accused of hiding nearly $1 million to hide an affair with a campaign aide. the trial is scheduled to start in january. now to ponzi king bernie madoff. in an interview, he says he actually likes it in prison better than he was living the high life. madoff's family has been in seclusion but in an interview with "60 minutes," madoff's wife

at least seven people are dead after an indiana highway crash. police say a tractor-trailer slammed into a minivan last night. this was on the border near michigan. ten people were in that minivan. three were taken to hospitals along with the truckdriver. witnesses say the minivan may have hit a deer and stopped before being hit by that truck. in the manslaughter trial of michael jackson's doctor, dr. conrad murray, will not testify in his own defense. his last witness took the stand yesterday. that would be dr. paul white. he rejected the prosecution's theory on how jackson died. >> if, in fact, murray had administered the drugs that he described in his conversations

with the police department and the doses that he described, i would not have expected michael jackson to have died. >> dr. white could conclude his testimony today but the prosecution won't start its cross-examination until next week. in health news this morning, many people take asprirn to prevent heart attack and stroke and now british researchers have found it may have another big benefit. >> reporter: don maxton was with his mother when she was diagnosed with colon cancer. >> they checked her out right aaand they could tell there was something, there was something wrong. we expected colon cancer at that point. >> reporter: his family history puts him at higher risk at getting the disease but now british scientists have found a very common drug may be able to cut that risk. >> we set out to try to see if it would prevent -- and today we are announcing that it does. >> reporter: researchers found that two aspirins a day can lower cancer rates around 60% of

people who are scientists say the results are so impressive that doctors should consider giving aspirin. smoking can put you at increased risk at colon cancer and so can a diet of red meat and aspirin may seem like a simple solution but it has side effects. >> it is important to do this after having spoken to your physician and finding out exactly just how high risk you are. >> reporter: maxton takes a low dose aspirin for his heart and plans to ask his doctor if he should take more to protect against cancer. a couple of very familiar faces are back on mtv.

the european union leaders agree to slash greece's debt and offer a joint plan to keep the debt from spreading around the world. as part of the deal, the banks will accept 50% losses, and the european union will double the risk for default. e.u. leaders will finalize the details december 1st, and they are asking financially stable countries to help in the recovery. a congressional supercommittee continues to be split along party lines. rival plans from republicans and democrats on the committee call for smaller than expected cost of living raises for retirees and social security retip cents. >> it calls -- recipients. it calls for tax increases, but republicans are against the tax increases
