prince george's county are getting their plows and salt trucks ready for what could be the first winter storm of the region. the storm happens to coincide with mdot's annual dry run. that's when drivers, dispatchers and authorities patrol their routes, looking for potential problems such as potholes or other road hazards. well, the snow that we are expecting, it's from the same system that caused severe damage in the west. now, we're looking at pictures from denver, colorado. the thick, heavy snow tore down trees and knocked out -- knocked out power to thousands. i hope we're not going to expect anything like this. let's go right to howard and get his forecasts >> j.c., those denver pics scare me because we could be looking at a heavy wet snow north and west of town and heading up to pennsylvania. winter storm watches 2 up to maine from virginia and west virginia and that could be a real problem. locally we've got the winter storm watches from fredrick county and points east right along the pennsylvania border.
12:02 pm
loudoun has been added since this morning, northern faulk here and everybody in the park, the shenandoah, the valleys and the mountains, this going through saturday as this storm is taking shape. we've got cold air up to the north. that is filtering down. that's the supply of cold air. i know it's early in the season, it's marginally cold, but it's going to be cold enough, especially at the higher elevations to take a lot of this moisture and turn it from rain into snow. actually, that storm will redevelop off the coast and move off toward the north and the east. so right now the main precipitation types tomorrow look to be mainly snow from fredrick north and west, along the i-81 corridor and the park, rain changing to snow east of that as you head to upper montgomery county, eastern loudoun, maybe western fairfax, culpepper county, northern and central porses of faulk here. rain will end to snow from the i-95 corridor for fredricksburg, baltimore and d.c. south of town likely to stay mainly rain. a quick look at how much we're
12:03 pm
going to get, a trace to an inch here. you get just outside of the beltway, parts of montgomery and fairfax county, one, two, possibly three inches. you get to the upper part of the county, three plus in the mountains. we could get locally six inches of heavy, wet, sloppy snow. i'll break down the timetable for you and have the rest of the weekend forecast for you in a few minutes. j.c. testimony continues in the lululemon murder trial. brittany norwood has been charged with killing jayna murray inside the store in be thez a. yesterday the jury heard norwood's own words hours after the murder. let's get to certificateei chin. she has the latest. reporter: j.c., we are 1/3 of the way through testimony with witnesses. prosecutors say a total of 35 witnesses with take the stand in the course of this trial. right now we have a coworker of jayna murray, one of the last people to talk to her before she was killed. before that a forensic expert on the stand walking us through all the weapons that were used,
12:04 pm
the state says was used to kill jayna murray. jim shallick here legal expert joins us now to talk about the significance of going through each and every one of these weapons, wrench, box cutters, rope, knife, why? >> very important for the government to show that she used the defendant many different weapons and that they were located in different places in the store, this from the government's point of view will show that this was a deliberate plan to kill jayna murray, and obviously one weapon didn't do it, so she had to go to different weapons. it shows premeditation. reporter: for the defense? >> for the defense, they're probably going to show that everything was in one place, easily acceptable and when she exploded and lost control, all the different weapons were there and she just started using all of them in a frenzy. reporter: we cannot not mention some of going on in the courtroom. jim, you were there watching the video with everybody else of the crime scene, jayna

murray's body lying in a pool of blood. you saw one person run out, one in tears, the murray family collecting their hands looking down. >> it was gruesome, it was like watching a horror movie, a bloodbath. that store was covered in blood, even john mccarthy, our state's attorney had tears in his eyes. i looked over at the defendant, she looked at the body and turned away, no emotion, no expression. reporter: we also have to not forget that both families of the victim and the defendant are inside watching this and must be so, so difficult. in fact, channel 9 employee saw norwood's sisters outside of the women's bathroom approach jayna murray's mother, touched her and said i'm sorry. there's a lot of interest surrounding this trial. 50 people could not even get inside this courtroom, a lot of them are jayna murray's friends, so the judge actually changed to a bigger courtroom. it's the right thing to do. reporter: absolutely. the public has a right to see this trial. the judge moved it to a smaller courtroom today and yesterday.
12:06 pm
next week it'll be in the big ceremonial courtroom. the public has a right to see this trial reporter: thank you, jim shallick legal expert for us throughout this trial. we have another expert, a forensic expert this afternoon. of course we'll have much more, andrea mcí carren in the courtroom right now. she will have the very latest at 5:00 tonight. back to you. >> certificateei chin reporting live, thank you. gary giordono will go before a judge in aruba for a detention hearing today he's the gaitersburg man alleged in the disappearance of robyn gardner. she vanished in august, but her body has not been found. giordono claims she was swept out to sea while they were snorkeling. the district man who was accused of killing his teenaged daughter and then dumping her body in a trash bin will spend 40 years in prison. the body of ebony franklin was found last november. her father, robert mcí intire

12:08 pm
3rd iowa caucuses, perry is committed to just one. his challengers say that's a mistake. >> i would never skip a debate. i never skipped the opportunity to let the american public know what i think about these issues. >> i don't see how somebody can say that they can't debate rick santorum or newt gingrich or ron paul, but they'll be ready to debate barack obama. reporter: president obama has said he's not paying much attention to the gop race, but new numbers show he may have to. he's lost millions of dollars worth of support from donors to his 2008 campaign. tens of thousands of people who gave the president hundreds of dollars or more last time haven't offered him as much this time around. some are sending checks to his republican challengers. mitt romney who's leading gop polls in the early votes states has picked up big donations from parts of the country that were solidly for candidate obama four years ago, including southern california, new england and florida. despite that, the president's campaign isn't hurting for

money. together with the democratic party, he raised more than $70 million between july and september for his reelection bid. tara mergenner, cbs news, the white house. >> those fundraising numbers do not include money that outside groups raised known as super political action committees. finance laws allow those types of groups to raise unlimited amounts of money to influence elections. a virginia tea party group is demanding an $8,000 refund from the city of richmond. that's how much the city charged the group to hold three rallies in the plaza over the past three years. our richmond tea party spokesperson says occupy protestors have been camped in the plaza since october 15th and they have not been charged. tea party groups in charlottesville, atlanta, here in washington d.c. have raised similar complaints. but it is not just the tea party that is feeling slighted because of the occupy protests,
12:10 pm
some people living near the protest encampment here in washington d.c. say the noise at night is getting out of hand. georgia familiarm is a law student studying for finals. she says the cheers and noise at mcpherson square can sometimes go on until 2:00 a.m. >> i don't want them to be forced to leave, but i would like for them to know that this there are people living here. >> well, the occupy d.c. crowd could grow by the hundreds tonight because students, alumni and faculty from howard university plan to march tonight in support of the demonstrations. coming up on 9 news now at noon, we all know why the chicken crossed the road, but what's the deal with the beer -- or deer in the title basin? we're going to take a closer look. also another miracle in the ruins of that earthquake- ravaged turkey, nearly 600

including hundreds of winterized tents for the many who have been left homeless. we have an important recall to tell you about tonight. it is topping our consumer alert. tbm gm is recalling -- general motors is recalling 34,000 new chevy and gmc crossover suvs. the car maker says the tire pressure monitor in its 2012 equinox and terrain vehicles does not work properly. the warning light does not come on until the tire pressure is more than 25% below recommended amounts, and this can cause the underinflated tire to overheat, to blow out and possibly lead to a crash. coming up next, howard has his weekend forecast. >> j.c., it is gorgeous right now, but this is not going to last that much longer. the clouds, the precipitation are quickly headed this way and some of it will be frozen tomorrow and that means problems. look at these temperatures. as we go to break, enjoy it, right now 45 to 50, perhaps a

armory. over 200 exhibitors are taking part and today that expo will continue until 7:00 and tomorrow it's from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00. might want to stop by. d.c. fire and rescue had their hands full trying to pull this deer, look at it, a deer in the tidal basin. this all happened this morning. he got swept away, couldn't get out. crews eventually were able to put a rope around him and get him out safely. i don't know whether you've noticed, but if you go through rock creek park -- >> they are all over the place right now. storm alert >> yeah, we've got a worm headed this way -- winter storm headed this way tomorrow and we may see some snow here in washington, although the greatest concern are those areas north and west especially with a little elevation, and it could be problematic as close as upper montgomery county, areas west into loudoun county
12:18 pm
and into parts of prince william and faulk. where you've got a little elevation that could make a big difference. early season snows, temperatures are critical. they're on the borderline. a little elevation, you get a little bit of height and that makes all the difference in the world. j.c., we've had snows in october before. five times we've had measurable snow, another four times we've had a trace. but the earliest we've ever had measurable snoaferl october 10th, 1979. on that day there were parts of montgomery county that had over 11 inches of snow even though downtown had just .30, the record october snowfall for washington downtown is two inches on october 30th, 1925. so not unprecedented, but rather rare to have snow this early. winter storm watch now in effect from fredrick county, northern baltimore county, the rest of western maryland, eastern west virginia and the shenandoah valley and the park. that means the weather service believes there's a potential for five inches of snow or more. that's what the criteria is around here. clouds will be increasing quickly this afternoon as
12:19 pm
temperatures only get to the lower 50s at best, maybe 51. clouds thicken up tonight, and by 9:00 we might even have a few showers out there, especially south and west of town. temperatures will be dropping through the 40s, and by tomorrow morning 35 to 40 with rain to start the day and snow out in the mountains. already seeing precipitation into southern west virginia, over toward roanoke now. and look at this, in the mountains, look at some of the blues and pinks showing up. that's the wintery mix that we're really starting to be concerned about. temperatures down towards harrisonburg and stanton where the clouds are thicker. culpepper is 50. 50 in fredrick, 48 for easton, 48 in fredricksburg, and here in washington a very pleasant 49 degrees. i know it's chilly. we stay mostly cloudy. these are high thin ones, but the thicker clouds will be moving in over the next couple of hours. dry air as the dewpoints are 41 and the humidity at 50%. this storm system hit colorado, hit texas with snow. it's going to hit our area all
12:20 pm
the way to the northeast and some of this snow could be heavy, it could be historic for october and with leaves still -- still many of the trees having leaves on them, they could catch that snow and you could have snapping branches, trees coming down and there's a lot of moisture here and we're going to get a coastal storm to develop as well. our futurecast, we'll put it in motion. here comes the rain this evening. by 7:00 snowing in the mountains of western virginia and west virginia out toward areas west of the valley. that will be moving up towards western maryland tonight. one thing i think this model is not doing too well, i think the cold is a little bit deeper, this blue could be here, this pink could be here by tomorrow morning. and then the quicker the changeover that occurs in places like fredrick, up in montgomery or leesburg, that means you'll see more snow. likely staying all snow areas fredrick west and even tomorrow afternoon we're going to see some of that start to switch over. again, i think the blue will be a little bit farther east and the blue is all snow. by 6:00 it's approaching d.c. and end for a little while and then start to pull out tomorrow night. there's a lot of rain with this, a lot of moisture, low-
12:21 pm
level moisture. we're talking several inches here, two to three plus, maybe more along the jersey coast, but this is going to be snow likely so that could be very heavy amounts there with rain changing to snow north and west. i gotta show you the snow totals one more time. a trace to even upwards of an inch in and around the beltway, but as you go north and west, one to three. upper missouri go, fredrick, loudoun, maybe three to six in the higher elevations and in the park. could be six or more locally. going to be a real problem. 51, 35 to 40 tonight, a severe weather alert day for saturday with the rain and the snow, 39 in town, but some areas north and west mid-30s. sunday 49. we'll recover, we'll do some melting and some cleaning up, and then halloween actually looks pretty good, 54 degrees for a high, so trick or treaters upper 40s. we'll be back with more right after this.
