cain confusion. the republican front-runner offers explanations about accusations of sexual harassment. a triple dip? the housing market has even further to fall. and reality bites, just ten weeks after their made for tv wedding, kim kardashian and kris humphreys are calling it quits. this is the "cbs morning news" humphreys are calling it quits. this is the "cbs morning news" for november 1st, 2011. captioning funded by cbs was i the only one that saw that coming? we'll talk about it later. i'm terrell brown. republican front-runner herman cain admits that he was once accused of sexual harassment, but says the claims

were false. he offered conflicting answers on the specifics of the allegations and whether his two accusers were paid off. susan mcginnis is in washington with the latest this morning. good morning to you. >> good morning, terrell. cain spent the day fighting back against those allegations, but those conflicting accounts are raising questions about the staying power of his campaign. herman cain is scrambling to set the record straight. >> i was falsely accused of sexual harassment. i have never sexually harassed anybody in my life. this false allegation to now come up is kind of baffling. >> the gop front-runner spent monday on the defensive, repeatedly denying sexual harassment allegations dateding back to the 1990s. according to a report on po litco.com, two female employees filed the complaint while cain ran a restaurant group. but he was cleared of all

allegations he insists. >> we have no idea the source of this witch-hunt. cain denies any knowledge that the women received payout necessary exchange for nondisclosure agreements. >> i am unaware of any sort of settlement. i hope it wasn't for much because i didn't do anything. >> he later clarified. >> she ended up leaving with several months severance. > >> iowa, he's leading mitt romney and edged ahead of rick perry ns texas governor's own state. anna palmer is one of the reporters who broke the story. she says this probably won't be the end of the cain controversy. >> i think we'll see this play out in the next couple of days in terms of what he actually knows. >> cain's supporters appear to be standing by his side. online donations nearly doubled

on monday. >> there's no telling at this point how this will impact cain's front-runner status. but it has the potential to shuffle the gop race. >> susan, we have two different things going on here. on top of the sexual harassment allegations, dain campaign now has something else to worry about. >> now there is a possible allegation of financial misconduct. this is coming from a report that a charity that was partly founded by mark block, cain's chief of state, contributed about $45,000 to the cain campaign and because of its tax exempt status, it is now allowed to contribute to any political campaign. >> susan, thank you very much. let's turn to weather. at least 20 deaths are blame odd weekend's snowstorms. recovery is going slowly. motorists are having trouble finding gas because so many gas stations aren't operating.

the storm knocked down so many trees and power lines, it may be days before many residents have lights or heat. >> the first night, the four of us were in one bed and reading by flashlight, trying to make it fun. we're like, all right, this isn't bad. but now, day three, we're like -- >> it's a lot old. >> in an apology online for stranding passengers over the weekend, jetblue blamed equipment failures and power outages. in financial news, new york based securities giant mf global has filed for bankruptcy, the victim of investments in europe that went bad. the firm is run by former new jersey governor jon corzine. federal regulators are investigating missing customer funds, about $700 million worth. regulators want to know if the firm used the money to support its own trades as the firm failed. cbs money watch time now on a tuesday. a down day for stocks in asia. drew levinson is in new york

with more. good morning to you. >> good morning to you, terrell. asian markets flipped today on fears europe's plan to control its debt crisis won't work. today, wall street gets the latest on the construction and manufacturing sectors. auto sales numbers and the fed begins a two-day meeting on interest rates. monday, stocks closed out october with big losses. the dow dropped 276 points. the nasdaq was down nearly 53. despite that ugly session, stocks had their best month in almost a decade. for the month, the dow gained 9.5%. the s&p 500 was up almost 11%. it's hard to remember now, but just a few weeks ago, stocks were looking into the jaws of a bear market, down 20%, off their highs for the year. a new report warnings home prices could have much further to fall before hitting rock bottom. according to busserve, they're

projected to drop another .5% by next june. such a drop would mean a triple dip for the housing market since then. the analysis sees prices starting to recover late next year, but very slowly, climbing just 2% in 2013. finally, if you need some holiday cash, fedex might be able to deliver. the shipping giant is giving away $30,025 american express gift cards today on facebook. they will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. another 10,000 cards will be given to fedex customers. recipients are encouraged to he spend them on small businesses. >> i appreciate it, drew. thank you so much. company security firms says hackers in china are responsible for doesz of cyber attacks in u.s., europe and japan. between july and september, the

hablthers hit 48 companies to steal technical secrets. they used e-mails to plant on trojan virus into the the companies' computers. flooding in thailand has affected nearly one-third of the country. water has receded in parts of bangkok. at least 3 is people have been killed by the monsoon floods since late january. secretary of state hillary clinton has canceled a trip to istanb istanbul. she'll stay in washington because of her mother's illness. as for president obama, who is 50, the white house reports he is in excellent shape. in a two-page report, mr. obama's doctor says he is active, eats a healthy diet and drinks only in moderation. he's also now tobacco free. coming up on this tuesday, the hollywood break-up that has

convinced him to routinely administer propofol to michael jackson as dr. can rad murray did. anesthesiologist paul white also admitted dr. murray made mistakes. >> i think he should have called 911 sooner. i do not, however, think it could have made any difference in this case. >> vuf administered propofol in someone's bedroom? >> no, i have not. >> have you ever heard of anyone doing that prior to this case inspect. >> no, i have not the. >> reporter: jackson's personal physician is accused of causes his death. dr. murray believes jackson injected himself. but the prosecution has its own prosecution expert who has said that the defense's theory that jackson could have given himself the drug is a crazy scenario. dr. steven shaffer previously

testified that jackson would have been too groggy with all the medication he was on to give himself a shot. prosecutors claim murray gave the singer much more propofol than he admits and left him unattended and that his recklessness directly led to jackson's death. jurors will likely begin their deliberations later this week. karen brown, cbs news, los angeles. and it was promoted as america's fairytale wedding, but it was more like a tv reality show. just 72 days after their marriage, kim kardashian and kris humphreys are turning to divorce court. millions tuned in to watch them tie the knot, but now the two are splitting up. in a statement, kardashian said, i had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as you plan. we remain friends and wish each other the best. kardashian's soon to be ex said

sometime now for a check of the national forecast. scattered clouds lingering over the northeast. later today, look for sunshine in the southeast and southern plains. snow and windy conditions will come to wyoming and colorado. and it will be fair and clear and cool in the northeast. in sports, an overtime win puts the chiefs in the record books. san diego could have won it with just over a men left in regulations, philip rivers fumbles the ball. then in o.t., ryan knocks et through the upright to beat the chargers, 23-20. the chiefs become the first team in the nfl to lose its first three games and then share a division lead four games later. in baseball, just three days after whipping it all, st. louis cardinals manager tony larusa is retiring. he won his third u.s. series

wars. anna chapman was intent on stealing secrets for the kremlin. only now is the fbi revealing how they were caught. bob orr reports. >> in june, 2010, anna chapman visited a new york coffee shop to get help with a computer from her russian handler. but she didn't know that handler was an undercover fbi agent and the meeting was being secretly recorded. frank is the under cover agent. >> the under cover agent was handed the laptop. >> the fbi was watching when russian spies richard murphy and mike zitoli met on a street and again when chapman shopped for leggings, hat and jewelries inside macy's. the surveillance tapes document the fbi's ten-year effort called ghost stories to track ten russian spies who had burrowed

deep in american culture. agents took these still pictures of a very package containing $60,000 that a russian operative had planted in a rural field in new york state. two years later, video cameras recorded one of the spies retrieving the treasure. the trade craft was sophisticated, but compromised. this video shows a spy leaving a package in a cold war style dead drop under a bridge in arlington, virginia. still, another camera captured a spy takeoff. the fbi says $250,000 changed hands in a brief encounter on a subway staircase. the spies were instructed to get into the power circles of washington to get u.s. intelligence. when they got closer, the fbi decided to shut down the operation. bob orr, cbs news, washington. this morning on "the early show," how to choose the right health care plan for you and your family.

will feel like it should. still kind of weird toasty snow on the ground in spots in -- to see snow on the ground in spots and that will be melting off very quickly. some rain to the east of washington this morning and to the west skies have cleared. the day planner talking about temperatures which will really recover nicely. lots of nine and mid 50s at noon and upper 50s at 5:00 and highs today between 57 and 61. right now cloudy and 48 and to the east and southeast, especially on the eastern shore we're seeing those rain -- that area of rain with low pressure which popped here in eastern north carolina and crossed southeastern virginia and it was pretty close. just west and southwest of annapolis through davidsonville. the south-southwest? sneaking into extreme areas of eastern prince george's county along 301 here. also from north beach down to plum point here in calvert county a few showers in mcdaniel and oxford on the

eastern shore. west of washington skies have cleared. middle 30s in many areas but underneath the cloud cover will acts like a blanket. in fact mid- to upper 40s and cambridge at 50 and here in washington 48. highs today with the sunshine 59 for d. c. and 57 winchester and luray and 60 in fredericksburg. monika samtani? it's in the usual spots, that's because some of the spots have not been cleared. 66 on the inbound side and take a live look at nutley street. now as you can see it's not causing any delay just be aware that as you approach the beltway you may have to do a zigzag movement through the area. on the northbound side of 95 and 395, this is pretty much what it looks like from the river past duke street up to the 14th street bridge and into downtown. you will be okay this morning and over to the beltway on the

north side of town, between 29 and connecticut avenue, it's a milling and paving project through the fall. both loops of the beltway and at least until 5:00 in the morning but no delays as you can see. we're going to go into the district at 4:39. back to you. a local republican committee is catching the scrutiny of the secret service. after a halloween theme picture surfaced of president obama. >> it shows the president as a zombie with a bullet wound through his head. you can see it right there. alongside him other illustrations including is disfigured nancy pelosi. it was sent out on a mass e- mail to loudoun county republicans. governor bob mcdonnell is apologizing for their actions. bob self said in an e-mail to the associationed press that it was a light hearted attempt. herman cain has more events
