window and i decided to go into the bathroom and once i got to the bathroom, i heard three gun shots and after that, i came out as soon as possible and i heard everybody scatter. i saw a group stay in front of the window of the restaurant. >> you saw the young man on the ground? >> i came. >> that's when i saw the guy laying down there and he was screaming. >> and we should have -- police believe there were words exchanged that he didn't necessarily know the person that shot him, but he may have had words. one of six people shot in the district. let's go to the tape. >> this should have been the scene from dc's halloween night. ghosts and goblins everywhere. instead, there is police crime scene tape, because six people were shot last night at five different locations. >> it's crazy. this is a neighborhood you never expect that to happen. >> georgetown, a bullet is lodged in the restaurant across from the four seasons hotel where a 17-year-old youth from southeast was shot.

>> it felt fairly secure. i sort of expected that. >> right. >> but it is shocking. >> d.c. police chief says an adult male has been arrested. a weapon recovered. he has not been charged with a 17-year-old shooting. >> i'm not aware of any trick or treating or costumes involved in this. >> this is georgia in decatur northwest. two people, 16-year-old male, 19-year-old female were shot here. about a block away, an 18-year- old female shot. police believe the two shootings were connected. no motive. no suspect at this point. >> nothing but the youngest. they got guns and they want to use them. >> halloween shootings prompted the mayor to call a press conference today. chief lanier says the violence had nothing to do with halloween. >> october is always one of our more challenging months. when the weather changes and the coats and the jackets and the baggy clothing starts to come on, it's easier to conceal

a handgun. having a gun available to you is alms a recipe for disaster. >> now, the two more shootings last night at about 8:15, a 16- year-old male was shot and later at 1:35 a.m. this morning, a 44-year-old male was shot and that was on n southeast. back to you. >> bruce johnson, thank you for that. and more dramatic testimony today at the brittany norwood trial when the lead homicide detective in that case took the stand. jim detailed his many hours interviewing norwood after she was considered a victim and not yet a suspect in the case. andrea mckaren has been in the courtroom since day one. she is live once again from rockville. andrea. >> derek, the injure watched detective drury's interview taped two days before her arrest. she asked me if there was any good news referring to the investigation says montgomery county police detective.

he's a veteran homicide investigator with a soothing voice and reassuring style. the lumulemon murder was to be his last active case assignment before retirement. you're one of the best sources because you were there, he tells norwood on the police video tape. norwood had been called to the police station to submit hair samples and fingerprints. detective drury, i definitely don't want to get ink in your cuts or anything. norwood, oh, it's not that bad. we now know norwood's blood was found inside jayna murray's car, which made the next line of questioning relevant. detective drury, do you know what kind of car jana drives? norwood, i don't. i saw it once. i don't know the make and model. earlier in the day, a police forensic specialist says how norwood could have bound her own hands and ankles. the sure print expert went on

to testify that jayna murray's shoes were not responsible for any of the bloody tracks throughout the store. and while police vigorously looked for four types of shoes based on norwood's original story of two intruders, crime scene investigators only found two. >> a couple more observations from today at the start of her police interview. brittany norwood asked one of the two police detectives if they could open her bottled water for her. she didn't have the strength or perhaps the gash in her hand prevented her from doing so. we watched in the courtroom as brittany norwood watched herself on video tape very intently. it was the most alert and attentive we have seen her since this trial began. we are joined live by our legal analyst. what struck you today? >> it's a web of lies. we heard from the morning, the shoe impression expert showed us where the footprints led.

in the afternoon, we heard hours of brittany norwood lying again about how this murder had occurred. what is more interesting is that none of that really furthered the case. the juror already know who's done it. juries love to know and find out. >> when the defense admitted the murder, it took away a lot of the drama and it took away a lot of the flair that the prosecution put on. >> now tomorrow we'll be hearing from the medical examiner. why is that going to be so significant? >> timing. the medical examiner would tell us when she died, how long it took, and it will be fascinating to see the difference between that testimony and the blood spatter testimony we heard earlier this week. >> thank you so much. back to you in the studio. >> thank you, andrea. andrea has been updating the latest from the courtroom all day long. she has been on facebook and twitter. you can follow all the developments by logging on to

cross silver church comes to the capital area food bank every week to pick up food for needy kids. >> these children are on free lunch and so they may not have food to eat over the weekend while they are at home from school. while they are at school, they get free breakfast and free lunch, here's another opportunity to feed them while they are at home. >> that church is more than 700 nonprofits that depend on the capital area food bank to feed needy people across the washington area. executive director says all those agencies are keeping people from starving in the mist of tough times. >> 50,000 manufacturing exeans have gone out of business. 8million jobs are gone. these are people that are losing jobs and working low pay jobs or maybe working two and three jobs and they can't keep their house together along with food on the table. all the necessities that you need to live in an expensive area like washington. >> food bank estimates the need is so great that 600,000 people

and the whole washington, d.c. area are at risk for hunger. 200,000 of them are children. and here in the district, 50% of the children are at risk for hunger. on pickup days, the needs are great. at the ax food pantry, which was closed to close for a week, families were thankful the community responded with enough donations to get it back up and running. >> it's a blessing to us. it's really a blessing to us. come here often and it's a blessing. >> to meet the constant need, food pantries and the food bank need continuing donations and support from the community. peggy fox, 9news now. >> so here's another figure. an average of 1.7 million meals are created each month from the food districted by this facility right here. believe it or not, that still leaves 20 to 30% of area kids at risk of hunger. they need our help and right now, you can log on to

employment as the lagistics manager. >> i do whatever it takes to make a difference in someone's life. if it is carrying furniture, if it is making food bags, if it's keeping the place facility clean, i'm the l agistics coordinator. >> and food was his first step toward redemption. >> i was so tired. i was hungry. when you're homeless and you don't have adequate food, the whole sense of depression and hopelessness comes into play. >> now it's payne who distributes food to needy families. and who occasionally visits the food bank and marvels, knowing the good it did him. >> and the first thing that i was greeted with when i got to the mission is milk. all i knew is that was a

portion of my life that was finally stable. i went from hopelessness to being helpful. once a little bit of hope was given, i wanted to repay that hope by helping out and doing whatever i can. >> michael angelo, it was the food that gave him the hope. it gave him over that sense of hopelessness. the people who work here don't get to see that. it really matters to each and every individual out there and michael angelo is one of 3/4 of a million people that benefit from this place. a lot of them are kids and families. it's people all over the community. >> things have changed. there are people working one or two jobs. and that steppingstone can be the first thing that brings them back up. michael angelo is getting married? >> they are planning a wedding. >> scott, thank you so much.

9news now is teaming up with the boy scouts. they will drop off empty bags at homes across the region. one week later, the scouts are going to be back and hopefully you will have filled it full of food. boy scouts will be at area safeway stores to collect donations. the dc bag tax prevents them in dc. >> let's go back to topper at the central union mission with more on the efforts there. again, the mission is one of the places that gets the food here from the food bank. right top? >> exactly. and it's a great organization because it actually kind of lifts folks from the street back into society where they can find work and it's a wonderful, wonderful organization. i'm at the window here. this window, this is carrie. 160,000 meals come out of this window every year. that's impressive. i tell you what, every day,

every night they take 80 people off the streets. 82 people off the streets. they come in here. they sleep at the mission here. they are given hot showers and given breakfast in the morning and go back out on the street, try to find a job. try to get back to work, and they are able to come back here for lunch and for dinner. in addition to feeding hot meals and feeding everybody, they have given away 400,000 bags. the equivalent of 400,000 bags of groceries last year. that is incredible. what they do is unbelievable. it is a phenomenal program. if you go to our website and click on the food drive, you can click. again, 14th and r in northwest and they have been in the community for 127 years. they have been here since 1984. let's talk about weather. pretty quiet, all things considered. temperatures are not bad. generally in the 50s. 59 across the area. 59 in college park and 59 also

welcome back to 9news now and our special broadcast on the hunger crisis in the washington, d.c. metro area. listen to this statistic. half of the kids under age 18 in the district of columbia. they are not getting enough to eat. imagine how that could impact your performance and potential throughout this newscast. we'll tell you how you can help them do better. we want to switch gears and tell you about a health alert. an important study that was just released this afternoon. it shows how a low amount of alcohol over a long period of time can increase a woman's risk of breast cancer. here's randall pinkston. >> probably 1 to 2, maybe 3 on a friday night. >> a new study shows low levels of alcohol could have consequences. research shows women who drink small amounts of alcohol, 3 to 6 drinks a week increase their risk of breast cancer by 15%.

researchers also found heavier drinkers, women who had 2 drinks per day increased their risk by 51%. compare to women who never drink. >> it's most important what someone does over a long period of time, not what she does over the past week or past month. >> doctors aren't quite sure what the connection is between alcohol and breast cancer. but they think it has something to do with how alcohol affects estrogen levels in the body. >> alcohol may also change the sensitivity of tissues to estrogen. >> it's up to the individual to weigh the risks. a woman with a history of breast cancer may want to cut down on her drinking. but a woman with heart problems may want to continue having a glass of wine. she will try to drink less. >> if i was in my 20s, it wouldn't matter to me. but with a history, definitely. >> who? >> family history.
