william parkway, so far, so good up into springfield and on into 395, live look at the 14th street bridge heading into the downtown area. a nice ride across the bridge span on the potomac and anacostia river crossings are running smoothly. for the thousands of area commuters whose trips to work have been impacted by brac, there is some good news this morning. >> the pentagon is giving a large chunk of money trying to get things improved trafficwise. two local sites where brac has led to an influx of workers. 9news now reporter surae chinn has the latest. >> good morning to both of you. yeah, improvements are coming but not for awhile. they will be made at several locations on and around walter reed hospital. lawmakers are calling this a win but they're not going to come for quite awhile. the department of defense has awarded nearly $270 million for

the two military hospitals. walter reed national military medical center and fort belvoir community hospital. here's the breakdown of improvements. in fairfax county near fort belvoir, $180 million will go toward widening route one. around walter reed and montgomery county, $89 million worth of improvements. now, nearly half of which will go toward building a metro access tunnel under route 355 and four other intersections around the hospital will get the improvements. lawmakers from our area in both virginia and maryland have been fighting for funding and overall improvements, highlighting the fact that serving the nation's wounded warriors and veterans are vital but first you have to get to people to these hospitals. lawmakers are saying it is definitely a win-win situation right now. back to you. >> all right, surae. a win-win situation how long do we have to wait to feel the

victory? >> that's the catch. obviously it won't help with today's traffic or even the months to come. this tunnel at the metro station isn't going to start until 2013 so all of this construction is going to happen while the gridlock is happening. that tunnel won't be completed for nearly two years. we're look at nightmarish traffic for some time to come. >> exactly. creating the improvements will add to the gridlock already on the roadways. surae will have more on this for us later in our newscast. thank you. >> prince george's county police spent the night looking for a suspect in a deadly shooting in forestville, maryland. two people were shot last night in the 3300 block of walters lane. when officers got to the scene, they found a man dead from his wounds at a shopping center parking lot. he has been identified as anthony washington. another wounded victim was found with injuries that are described as nonlife- threatening. there is new information this morning about the boy with autism who was found last week after being missing for five

days. 8-year-old robert wood jr. remains hospitalized in richmond. he's being treated for a hole in his esophagus. the child's grandmother believes the tear might be from something he ate while he was in the woods. the child wanterred off october 23rd while on a walk in hanover county. he was found friday at a nearby rock quarry. the montgomery county council is hearing from the public about proposed new rules for the big box retail stores in the future. one county proposal would dictate the size, the designs, the hours of operations and hiring practices if large retailers like to come into town like walmart, costco or target. opponents fear too many rules might drive away developers. supporters say the big box stores should not destroy a neighborhood's character. the county proposal would apply to stores that are 75,000 square feet which is larger than a football field. just shy of 5:05, time for the latest "your money" report of the morning. >> jessica doyle is here with a

look at this morning's headlines. >> fresh concerns about the greek debt crisis has been sending stocks lower around the globe in asia overnight, stocks fell yet again. we'll have to keep a pretty close eye on wall street after losses across the board yesterday. checking the numbers, the dow stands at 11,658, it lost almost 300 points. that's on top of its triple digit losses on friday. the nasdaq down by 77 points. s&p 500 down by 35 points. the latest from greece. the greek cabinet today passed a plan from the prime minister to put new austerity measures to a vote. it is part of a plan that eu countries put together to keep greece solvent. now, that bailout is uncertain raising the odds that greece could default on its debt and drop out of the eu altogether. greece's leader mixed with the -- meets with the heads germany and france today. >> this might be a tough week

to pick for an initial public offering on wall street. that's what groupon is planning on friday. groupon has filed to sell 30 million shares up to $18 a share. in that range, groupon would be valued over $11 billion. that's far below previous expectations that ranged to $20 billion. still, not so bad given the fact that the company has never managed to turn a profit despite 50 million users worldwide. >> amazing. >> it is a bellwether for other companies. angies list and a lot of rumors about living social. >> because of the way things started going, ipo, not so much. they back off. see how it plays out. >> what do you have for us? >> bank of america backing down on its debit card fees. don't celebrate all too quickly. >> they'll find another way. >> they always do. >> thanks, jess. >> sure. >> south korean protestors

year and a day in jail. matthew devlin apologized for the accident in the delaware river which killed two hungarian students. devlin admitted to leaving his post to make a cell phone call to check on the condition of his son who had just undergone surgery. even the snowstorm cleanup is proving deadly for some people in the northeast. connecticut's governor reported one electrocution from a live power line and two carbon monoxide deaths from people using generators. there are still hundreds of people without power. >> there are no snowstorms in our immediate future. howard says we're returning to the 60s outside. wait until you see his seven- day forecast. details at 5:14. a former redskin who is headed back here this sunday had some unkind words for his previous employer. >> ahead at 5:578, not like we need another reason to eat but today is one of our favorite silly holidays ever.

morning. we've got readings down in the 30s in many areas this morning. couple of spots holding on to the low 40s. you have to be in town or by the bay. the bay and the river right now, have a lot of heat. temperatures are going to respond nicely though. dry air cools off a lot at night. it warms up nicely during the day. by noon, sunny and 54. lays in many areas -- highs in the 61 to 62 range. by 5:00, 59 degrees will do it for us. showers well off to our north and west across the mid -- the upper midwest into wisconsin, the u.p., minnesota. those areas are seeing the rain. with high pressure nearby, that's giving us the light winds. now down to 30 in manassas. it is 43 at the naval academy. mid-30s across the bay in easton. even tappahannock at 32. charlie in southern fauquier county, even 32 as well.

france tonight. there, the president will attend tomorrow's opening of the g20 summit. the lead topic expected to be the european debt crisis. >> the founder of wikileaks awaiting a decision from britain's high court this morning. julian assange has been fighting extradition to sweden where he's facing allegations of rape and sexual assault. in addition to his personal and legal troubles, assange announced last week that wikileaks has suspended its publishing operations sant trying to raise enough funds to avoid a total shutdown. a bit of good news for thousands of commuters dealing with back-ups because of brac changes. fort belvoir is getting money from the pentagon earmarked for making traffic improvements. 9news now reporter surae chinn is live in bethesda where money is headed to the military medical center there. good morning, surae. >> good morning, andrea. traffic around here can be a real problem. we're on center drive around walter reed military medical

hospital in bethesda. but now, federal funding is coming our way but you know those improvements are going to be going on while there is gridlock and folks trying to get into the huge complex or it is going to create more traffic issues but nonetheless, lawmakers are calling this is a huge win for the area in terms of getting and securing the funding. the department of defense awarded nearly $270 million for the two military hospitals, walter reed national medical center will get nearly $90 million and fort belvoir received $180 million to widen route one. bethesda, around the hospital where we are, four intersections will get improvements and an entire metro access tunnel will be built under route 355. lawmakers from our area in both virginia and maryland have been fighting against brac, the base realignment project, from the very start but since they've been overruled, they've been fighting for funding for these

improvements and now, they're finally getting what they want. but again, it is going to take awhile before the improvements even start and are completed. andrea? >> thank you, surae chinn reporting live in bethesda. prosecutors in the lululemon murder trial could rest their case today. the lead homicide detective in the case took the stand tuesday. jim drewery detailed his many hours interviewing brittany norwood when she was still considered a victim not a suspect but he says that changed as norwood's story unraveled. she's accused of bludgeoning jayna murray to death inside the lululemon store in march and creating an elaborate crime scene to cover it up. norwood's attorneys concede she killed murray during a fight but say it wasn't premeditated. a hearing is scheduled on a right to die case. washington county resident is hospitalized. the 55-year-old suffered brain damage after a heart attack back in july. his wife gave doctors permission to remove her

husband's feeding tube but now, her mother and brother are challenging that decision. the feeding tube was restored pending the outcome of this legal fight. two nuclear reactors shut down could be restarted as early as next week. the agency met with about 300 members of the public tuesday night in mineral. the epicenter of the august 23rd earthquake to discuss resuming operations with the plant. plant owner dominion virginia says it is safe to resume operations but several environmental groups have asked the nrc to suspend the company's license to restart the plan. we're headed toward 5:35. time for another "your money" report. >> jessica doyle is back with a david and goliath story. consumers win over the big bank. >> for now! >> that's right. >> things are never that simple, right? the people have spoken. they did not want that new debit card fee bank of america was planning. a customer even collected

200,000 signatures against the move so bank of america is officially dumping plans to charge customers a $5 a month fee to use their debit card. other banks also either dropped their debit card fees or pledged not to start them in the first place. don't relax just yet. there are a host of other fees that experts say could make their way to a bank near you. possibly fees for checks or higher minimum balances so keep your ice on the bank statements. don't look for all that much out of the federal reserve today as its two-day policy setting session ends no new steps to aid the economy. the fed has a little breathing room right now because the u.s. economy looks like it is picking up enough steam on its own. people who lost their homes to foreclosure could be in for a payday. more than four million homeowners who were foreclosed on between 2009 and 2010 will have a chance to request an independent review of how their foreclosure process was

we're going to take a live look from sky 9 right now. they're hovering over an accident on the outer loop of the beltway. right here near university boulevard. you can see the right side of the roadway is blocked with fire and ambulance on the scene there. it is already slowing things down as you come around from 95 toward the accident scene again with crews on the scene here. we'll take a look at a map. on the outer loop, heading westbound on the beltway, you want to be careful as you leave 95, the accident activity is right around this area. i'll keep you posted on that situation. live look from 270 at falls road, just the normal rush hour stuff as you head toward urbana and clarksburg here in the rockville area down to the point where the lanes divide. 270 is running incident-free. american legion bridge on the west side of town, no problems to report as you leave bethesda and heading down toward tysons corner across the bridge span, right now this morning, you'll be ok. i'll update you on the accident

billy crystal, steve martin, whoopi goldberg and he was 87 years old. dr. conrad murray told a judge tuesday he would not take the stand in his own defense. prosecutors contend that murray gave jackson a fatal dose of the anesthetic propofol. defense attorneys claim jackson gave himself the failed dose. dr. murray could face up to four years in prison if convicted. he could also lose his medical license. the australian paparazzi got the first chance to swarm kim kardashian. she arrived less than two days after announcing she filed for divorce. she married chris humphries 72 days ago in august. photos showed kim without her engagement ring as police escorted her to her car. kim and her sister, chloe are
