mentioned earlier is far from where the president would like it to be. but it is way, way better than a 41% approval rating that a poll found for him in early october. the polling institute says he seems to be improving in voters eyes across the board. lesli. >> see what happens, bruce, thank you for that. dc residents make up more than half the riders on metro buses, but it turns out very few city buses are getting jobs with the transit agency. >> good news from the office today was that 26 unemployed people were ready to take the test to become metro bus operators. >> why can't we close down after 42 years? >> disappointing if not shocking news came when a metro official gave a percentage for the number of dc residents already employed by metro in any job. >> 4 to 5% of our employees

come out of the district. >> did you know that? >> no, i did not. >> by mid afternoon, metro was adjusting the percentage. saying of its 11,000 workers, 1500 actually live in the city. that's 14%. still way too low for dc employment services director, lisa mallory. >> problem was that individuals from the district of columbia were not clear about what the requirements are. >> dc will now prescreen its applicants to metro and other agencies. metro says it will do more to reach out to dc residents. bruce johnson, 9news now. >> prince georges county is focusing on jobs as well. set up a $50 million fund to attract new business. that money would be doled out as loans to companies setting up shop in the county and then prince georges would also determine the terms of each loan. and plans to start accepting applications by january. >> right now, jurors are

deliberating brittany norwood's fate in the lumulemon trial. our andrea mccarren has been at the courtroom for the last week and a half and joins us live with more on what has truly been a rivetting case. andrea. >> yes, it has. we are really down to the wire now. the judge just minutes ago has cleared his courtroom. the jurors are now deliberating. >> prosecution presented a rivetting closing argument. states attorney john mccarthy called brittany norwood a phenomenal actress and a cunning manipulator who lured jayna murray back to the lumulemon store and carried out a savage premeditated attack. norwood attacked murray using multiple weapons. when one didn't kill her, she rearmed again and again and again. switching her weapon at least five times. she used an adjustable wrench, a hammer, a kitchen knife, box cutters, raiser blades, and a

rope. the defense described norwood as delusional, lost, and clueless. defense attorney doug wood said there were so many holes in her story and her actions were so inept, they couldn't possibly be willful, deliberate, or premeditated. norwood's lawyer said the killing was done in the course of a moment by a woman who simply lost it. >> and joining us now live, our legal analyst, the case is going to the jury. they will decide between first and second degree murder. what do you think the jurors will struggle with tonight? >> the autopsy pictures. it will speak a different story to each individual. if they believe the prosecution, 331 wounds with five different weapons must have been premeditated. when we look at the pictures, a crazy person can only do this. someone out of their mind. that is the struggle that the jurors will have. >> those jurors saw nine very graphic autopsy photos of jayna

her friend who ran from a would be abductor waiting for her a couple doors down from her home. >> she's very worried. she's wondering what her mom would say. but she's okay. >> it was early friday morning in this quiet alexandria community. a 14-year-old mt. vernon high school student was walking to school. it was 6:55 6:55 and the wooden neighborhood was still dark. >> you never think it's going to happen to you or to your neighborhood. >> the student didn't report the incident to school leaders until late friday. the principal e-mailed parents and police blanketed the area saturday, but never found the suspect. >> the quicker we know, the quicker we can verify a story and do something about it. >> don't be alarmed if you hear or see airplanes flying in the wee hours of the morning. norad will conduct training exercises. they start up tonight. they wrap up sunday morning and those exercises are designed to improve norad's ability to identify and intercept other

service. some senators now have a plan to keep the postal service from going broke. the postal service would receive a refund of nearly $7 billion. an over paid into the federal employment retirement system. some of that money would fund buyouts to cut 100,000 jobs. also six day mail service would continue for another two years. here is encouraging economic news. most companies that suspended their 401k matches during the economic downturn have restored them. that's according to towers wattson. the survey found among companies that did suspend the matching funds, the suspensions lasted for about one full year. and if you want to blow some of your money, there's always power ball. the current jackpot is now $245 million and the next drawing is tonight. now, i do need to tell you that your odds of winning are 1 in 195 million. but you never know until you try. still to come, living the high life on the high seas.

new information tonight about that pregnant woman who was arrested and had her daughter taken into protective custody. all over what she says is a mistake. we told you last night about nicole. she felt dizzy while she and her husband were shopping, so she snacked on a sandwich. she forgot to pay. tonight, safeway says it is dropping the shoplifting charges against her. they say they are relieved at the decision. >> new at 6:00 tonight, more evidence of damage from the august earthquake is coming to light. the blog is posting today that the arlington house is closed to the public because of the damage it sustained in the 5.8 quake. the 200-year-old building on the ground of arlington national cemetery was once home to robert e. lee. the blog is reporting the

entire building's back wall shifted about a quarter of an inch. hundreds of students at st. mary's college are moving into their own temporary dorm. a cruise ship. these are the same students kicked out of their dorms three weeks ago as a result of an outbreak of mold. kristin fisher takes us on a tour of this floating dormitory on the first full day that students were on board. >> you know it's not your average college dorm when you have a baby grand in the common area. jessica from rockville is one of the 240 students that will spend the rest of the semester living on the sea voyager. >> the interior is really nice. i was shocked when i walked on. i was really excited to be saying, i'm going to be living on this ship. >> as she unpacks, she realizes the downsides. >> i have no idea where to put any of my stuff because we don't have a lot of space. >> there are two beds and not

items that families need. our anny hong visited a montgomery county facility in need today. >> staff and volunteers at mana food center prepare boxes of food to go home to people who fallen on tough times. >> i like to give back. >> they are filled with fresh produce, canned food, and baked goods. >> the need is really growing here in montgomery county. it is one of the wealthiest communities in our country. we have real pockets of poverty here. >> the food center relies on food drives and local donations from grocers. which are trucked to the food center every morning. this year, supplies are running short. shelf after shelf. no food. because of major federal subsidy cutbacks. inside the freezer is no better. >> it's usually steaming with hams and turkey rolls that we can pass out to the residents coming here for assistance and

soup kitchens. it's empty. we need help. >> all right, so here's how you can help with food drive 9. this saturday, the boy scouts will distribute more than 800,000 bags across the area. you fill them with nonparishable foods. scouts pick them up the following saturday. in the district, they aren't going to hand out bags, but you can make donations at 15 safeway stores. we hope people give, because the need is great and not just this time of year. >> it's a great cause. all they need is great weather on saturday. >> i think so. we can't make it easier than having the bow scouts drop off the door. they have done it in pouring rain, not the case this november. let's start with temperatures. it's pretty nice outside. it's not windy. temperatures are falling in the 50s. but this is what you expect in early november. 55 downtown. 57 in arlington. generally mid 50s around the beltway. 56 in bethesda. still 59 in rockville and 54 up
