we'll zoom into the beltway. no problems on the beltway through silver spring. let's take a live look here. if you are planning to head between 95 and university boulevard and over into the bethesda rockville area. we'll end with a live look south of route 50 in new carrollton. southbound the wilson bridge into alexandria. coming up we'll go back into maryland at 6:12. mike, back to you. monika, we are following breaking news out of montgomery county this morning. there is a huge house fire that left at least one person hurt. this is all taking place right now in the aspen hill neighborhood. the fire is on irish street just off aspen hill road. the fire chief joins us live right now from the montgomery county fire department. where does this stand mr. mcadams? >> the fire trucks were

dispatched at 3:50. they arrived on the scene and found a single family home with a large amount of fire. four people have been injured as a result of the fire, they have been transported to the local hospitals. at this point the fire is under control. montgomery county fire rescue investigation team will be looking at the origin of the fire at this point. it was our understanding there were two people in the home. now you are telling me four people are injured. do any of those include firefighters? >> good point. we have two injured firefighters that have been transported to the local hospitals as well as both residents of the home. >> understanding the investigation is ongoing, do we have an idea of a cause yet? >> mike, at this point, we do not. the fire has just been placed under control. our fire investigators will be looking if a root cause.

>> reporter: oftentimes when people start turning on their heat, we start to understand things can actually flame up. could smoke detectors be an indicator? >> we need to determine whether we had any active smoke detectors within the house and our investigators will determine that as they sort through the facts here. >> reporter: michael mcadams at the montgomery county fire department. sentencing is scheduled for january 27th now for brittany norwood. she could possibly get life in prison without the chance of parole. jurors said she planned to kill her coworker, jayna murray, inside the lululemon store march. murray suffered 331 injuries. here's how murray's mother reacted to the verdict. >> i questioned it. i thought, did i hear it right?

i was so afraid, it could be anything but that. but yet at the same time i was so concerned that i didn't catch it right. and then my husband had a deep sigh, and i knew it was right. >> norwood's attorney never called a single witness. he was hoping jurors would believe the murder was not premeditated. that would mean a lesser prison sentence. mike for more on this quick verdict we are joined by jim shall can i, jim, good to have you here with us. were you surprised the jury returned a verdict of first degree in such a short time? >> not at all. the evidence was so overwhelming, i was surprised it took an hour. >> the next phase is the sentencing phase. january 27ing. the jury is done. so this is just a submission to the judge. tell us more about what happens in this phase. >> the jury participation is over. we should thank them.

they did a great job. i saw the pain in their faces during the trial. judge greenburg will decide the sentence. life without parole or life in prison without the possibility of parole. if they want to talk he will hear from the victim's family and he will also get a report from the probation department a pre sentence report outlining brittany norwood's history and all the facts of the case. each side will make a recommendation. the state and the defense will make a recommendation to him. he will decide the sentence. >> jim we knew the jury had already heard from the defendant that she admitted the guilt. whether it was premeditated or not it was such a brutal case. the prosecutor provided such overwhelming evidence. >> why didn't this raise it to the level of a death penalty case? >> reporter: a lot. >> a lot of people have asked me that. you have to have certain conditions met, you have to have a confession and dna evidence.

if it is not a police officer, you have to have more than one victim. they have made it almost impossible to seek the death penalty. >> this was an incredible case the prosecutor, you have said has done a wonderful job. the curtis lopez murder case and the deaths of mrs. mcquain and her young son, would that also be one of those premeditated death penalty or some other kind of charge? >> i don't think it is a death penalty case. it will be a murder one type case just like this, yes. >> reporter: thank you very much and thank you for your analysis throughout this trial. >> thank you. we have more from the trial and reaction to the verdict on our website. visit wusa 9.com. 6:06 and jessica doyle is here. she is watching your money again this morning. relief is on the way for the biggest complaint about the new iphone. what is the deal?

>> the technology blogs have been abuzz about the phones. they say the batteries are running down way too fast. there is a problem it is not just with the new phone. battery life is being zapped by the new iphone system. so the battery problem is also affecting i phones, ipads and ipods that upgraded to this. apple found bugs in the program and will release a software fix in a few weeks. the blogs say there are a couple of things you can do now to extend your battery life. turn off location serves, location based reminders and also turn off the phone when you are not using it. two places to bargain hunt are going out of business. discounter sims and its filene's basement chain are filing for bankruptcy. you may think of filene's because of the running of the

mike and andrea? another clash between occupied protesters and police. this one in oakland, california. just about three hours ago police fired tear gas on the protesters. they started marching through the streets of the city. earlier today protesters shut down the port of oakland. that is the fifth busiest ports in the nation. another coming forward saying she was sexually harassed by herman cain. the other two alleged accusers settled out of court. the republican candidate calls the stories a smear campaign against it. circle january 10th on the calendar. first in the nation primary. state officials announced it yesterday. the iowa caucus is one week before on january 3rd. howard? >> andrea in the kitchen this morning the heart week is this saturday. we have been giving you advice on staying heart healthy. this morning we are talking

too. even in the 40s in detroit. this is the storm that hit denver with their second snowstorm in a week. it is coming through missouri and illinois. this is what is going to be moving toward us. the low pressure is going to get a little kick to the south. while it looks like there is a good system headed our way with this front sagging south, this will push the storm from southern virginia into the carolinas. by tomorrow afternoon the clearing is moving in. a dry weekend expected. 64 this afternoon, tonight we are down in the 40s. a couple of showers south. breezy tomorrow, north winds. saturday chilly, will be in the 30s and low 40s for saturday morning. 54, sunday in the upper 50s with sunset sunday just after

park. i'll update you on the accidents in virginia at 6:45. andrea and mike? thank you, monika. we continue to follow breaking news out of montgomery county, maryland. four people are being treated for injuries, after an early morning fire on irish street. the cause of the fire is under investigation just moments ago. mike mcadams spoke to us about what happened. he is the fire chief for montgomery county. >> they arrived on the scene for a single family home. at this point, what we have is we had four people that have been injured as a result of this fire. they have been transported to the local hospitals. at this point the fire is under control. >> we have been told at least one person who was transported to the hospital had serious

injuries. the victim's identities have not been released. we'll have an update on 9news now at noon. brittany norwood will be sentence in january for planning a murder and killing her coworker, jayna murray. >> since she was convicted, norwood should expect to get life in prison without the chance of parole. norwood killed murray inside the lululemon store. one juror spoke with andrew mccarron. he said everyone leaned toward a guilty verdict from the moment deliberations began. >> we wanted to be thorough and make sure there was nothing that could cause reasonable doubt. we discussed possible scenarios and people try to play devil's advocate. >> and that same juror added it was the vicious wounds all over murray's body which convinced

him of murray's guilt. the family of jayna murray was in the courtroom when the verdict came down. >> surae chinn joins us with more. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. yeah the verdict came around 7:00 last night. as you said it was about an hour of deliberation before the 12 member jury came to their decision. yes the family was in the courtroom when this verdict was read. they wept as the decision was made and they held on to each other. it was the decision they had hoped for. the family has said the last seven months have been traumatic. during closing arguments, more graphic photos were shown and the family could only look down. brit if any norwood guilty of first degree murder. >> more than anything, i know the trauma our family has been

basically between oxen hill. >> reporter: just got word of an accident on telegraph road at beulah. coming up a look at the big picture at 6:58. did you know that november is national adoption month? finding homes for children between the ages of 8 and 12 can be pretty difficult. but you can help. as their slogan goes, you don't have to be perfect to be an adoptive parent. what are some of the challenges? >> a lot of families want infants or small children and in foster care, most of the children tend to be older. the inchoate -- the average age is about eight years old. once a child reaches that age the chances of finding a family for them begins to decline.

nationwide there is a total of over 100,000 kids freed for adoption and waiting for families. >> in my lifetime i have had friends and family try to adopt kids and that can be costly and a difficult process. >> not the case in adopting children from foster care. it costs nothing. if you work through a private agency to adopt a child from the public agency, you may have some up front costs, but they are all reimbursed at the end. >> what are some of the concerns for parents? and can we allay some of those concerns? >> i think the slogan says it all. you don't have to be perfect to be a perfect parent. families are very afraid they are going to fail a child who has already suffered a lot of failure. and you just don't have to be afraid of that. kids don't need perfection, they just need families. >> they need somewhere to lay their head and have someone care. >> a dad runs out of the house. the kids are asking for ice
