texting his girlfriend after the murders. lopez beat jane to death while she slept with a 30-pound weight he got from his stepson's bedroom, stabbing her through the blankets. then he picked up william from a sleepover and took him to a storage facility. william used to play baseball and prosecutors say the video shows lopez grabbing the bat. >> placing a baseball bat in the backseat behind the driver seat of his car. >> reporter: there is video as well of lopez and his stepson at the gas station. william wheeling around on his skate shoes, childishly oblivious to what lopez was allegedly planning.

>> and william's body was found with serious injuries. it was found about 100 yards from where that video was shot at the gas station. >> reporter: police say that they found the bloody bat just a few feet from where they found william's body. a public defender called the evidence here circumstantial, but the judge found it compelling. given what he calls lopez's horrendous criminal history, he refused to set any kind of bail that would let lopez get out of jail pending trial. derek? >> bruce leshan, we just don't want that guy on the streets. thank you. it started as a strep throat and ended with an emergency amputation. that's what happened to their 6- year-old son who last year walked into the hospital and was sent home with tylenol. >> the very next day, surgeons had to amputate his legs above the knee and now his family is

suing the doctor and the hospital. >> reporter: this is where the malpractice suit was filed. just this afternoon, the family seeking damages in this case in excess of $30,000, but they tell us that it will take millions for a lifetime of medical care. >> i'm extremely proud of him. extremely. >> reporter: what has he taught you throughout all of this? >> i wish i was as strong as him. >> reporter: but even as strong as he is, the 6-year-old could not help, but sob on mom's lap. it's been a painful 11 months for this family. >> reporter: a nightmare that started last november. and the family rushed the 5- year-old boy to the baltimore washington medical center. they said that he had a fever of 102.5, a fast heart rate

andseverely slow in tonsil. >> when he mentioned that they were extremely swollen, i asked if he had done a strep and she said there was no need. >> they discharged him with an erroneous and really a garbage bag diagnosis. >> reporter: that diagnosis is nasal congestion and strained hip. it meant he had to lose his legs to save his life. now, the family blames the hospital and 33-year-old doctor for not prescribing antibiotics that could have stopped the infection. here's what we know about dr. hall. she's a 2005 graduate of howard university college of medicine. according to the state board of physician, she has a clean record. >> though it is still fresh, eric's parents continue to be amazed. >> he doesn't ask for help, he figures it out for himself.

he's a leader. >> reporter: now, we spoke to the hospital spokesperson, who released a statement expressing the sympathy to eric and his family, but the hospital will go on to say in part, "the care he received was thorough and appropriate. his symptoms were simply not consistent with or indicative of this very aggressive form of infection." we're live in annapolis tonight, 9news now. >> it certainly is an aggressive infection. thank you for that. i know the trauma our family has been through. i want no other family to go through with this. >> one day after a jury found her guilty in the murder of the ceo of the athletic store released a statement. it reads in part, we are pleased to see justice done and we hope that the verdict will bring a small measure of peace

and closure to the tragic events that have occurred last month. we hope that this provides some peace to the murray family and the bethesda community. people are still talking about this horrific crime. late this afternoon the veteran cop that oversaw the entire investigation spoke with our andrea mccaren. we've got more on that and something else that happened earlier today, andrea? >> reporter: yes, very interesting, lesli. outside the apple store in bethesda where employees heard jay that murray's -- jana murray's call for help and rejected to call 911. someone laid out flowers depicting the number of injuries that murray endured at the hands of brittany norwood. >> somebody was extremely agitated and that this was a personal attack. >> reporter: the montgomery county police captain came up

with one of the most horrendous crimes he has ever investigated in the 22 years with the department. and the suspected motive, no excuse for the savage attack. >> i believe that she really felt like she did not want to be accused of or looked at as someone that had potentially stolen from the store. >> reporter: the web of lies unraveled within days of the crime. >> at the point where she let us know that she had come in to the police headquarters and had denied ever being inside her vehicle. >> reporter: dna evidence told a different story. also shed new light on norwood's state of mind the night of the murder. >> she worked the shift that night. i mean, she worked her shift. we don't believe she was under the influence of drugs when it occurred and she had, well, a clear mind set of what she was doing, when she did this horrible crime. >> reporter: the money missing from the three cash registers have never been recovered.

but police believe that norwood took that too. and the department says that her conviction will not bring jana murray back, but it is the right verdict. the judge will sentence norwood on january 27. she faces life without the possibility of parole. and the defense has 30 days after that sentencing in which to file an appeal. live from rockville, andrea mccaren, 9news now. >> incredible case. thank you. >> you bet. the finger pointing has intensified over just who might have disclosed the past sexual harassment allegations against herman cain. the gop front runner has not had any public events, but still hitting the air waves trying to defend himself. we've got the latest. >> reporter: herman cain is criticizing what he calls the guilty until proven innocent culture of washington, d.c. the gop front runner said the sexual harassment allegations started with rival rick perry's

campaign. perry denies it, telling the blog that he would suggest that they didn't know anything about it. they pointed the finger at mitt romney who had a two-word response, not true. his patience has been wearing thin after answering questions about the claims and about a dozen interviews this week. >> there are facts that they are trying to destroy me personally as well as this campaign. >> reporter: thursday, they reported one accuser settled her sexual harassment claim with a $45,000 payout from the national restaurant association. a second woman reached a $35,000 settlement with the trade group. a year salary for her. and cain is scheduled to appear in a tea party debate this saturday. organizers hope to avoid talking about the scandal. >> the response we seem to be

morning house fire and the alleged hoarding could be to blame. >> i heard the noise and i looked out my bedroom window and the smoke was streaming out. i thought oh my gosh, jim's house is on fire. >> reporter: he has been jim's neighbor for the last 45 years. but a 60-year-old woman rescued from her bedroom died in the hospital. >> this is a pretty significant fire. >> reporter: and as big as the fire was, it did not surprise bill. >> i used to say if your house catches on fire, it's going up like a box. >> reporter: the reason according to bill and several of the neighbors is that the couple who lived here were hoarders. in fact, in march of 2010, they violated the housing codes for having boxes, ladders, chair cushions, and lamps in their yards. >> but at this point in the

investigation, we're not ready to call it a hoarding situation. firefighters have encountered a lot of debris, household contents inside the house. >> reporter: hoarders or not, you cannot help, but notice the large amount of stuff when the windows broke in the fire and now scattered across the front yards. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. but the clutter did not help. not to mention the homes had no functioning fire alarm. >> it's a wake up call. it should be for a lot of people. >> kristin fisher, 9news now. >> now, the victim has been identified as the 65-year-old. her husband still in the hospital with non-life- threatening injuries. the metro board approved many name changes today for many subway stations. in 2012, the navy yard stop becomes the navy yard ballpark. the king street station on the yellow line will become king street old town. they will drop fcu because the university no longer exists. the forest glenn station on the

stocks soared back above the 12 mow park to close at 12,44. and they climbed 60 and s&p 500 climbed 23 points. today's game comes after their prime minister has scrapped the plan for a referendum on a new debt deal. this is his fight for his political survival. and calls to the prime minister to step down are growing louder, but the greek officials say that he will plan to wait for the outcome of the confidence vote in his government tomorrow. and the instability is dominating the meeting of the g20 leaders in france. the french host and president obama met before the summit and came away claiming an agreement on the way forward dealing with europe's debt drama. but the president says that they still need to work out details on plans to resolve the crisis. occupy wall street

protested in oakland, turning violent overnight. hundreds of officers moved on in when they set fire to dumpsters. they eventually cleared the square and firefighters put out the flames. dozens of protesters were arrested. at least four of them were sent to the hospital. closing arguments, they are now underway in the trial of michael jackson's doctor. >> he is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the singer's death two years ago. we've got a live look from l.a. with the latest on how it is all coming together in the end, karen? >> reporter: well yeah, michael jackson's children have been center staged as prosecutors will be reminding the jurors that, you know, they cried out. in fact, they found out that their father was dead, but right now they are giving the closing arguments. all they want to do is convict

him for the action of michael jackson. the prosecution accuses him of breaking a sacred truck with michael jackson. >> conrad murray corrupted that relationship and for that, michael jackson, he paid with his life. >> reporter: during the closing arguments, the prosecutors said that the evidence against dr. murray is overwhelming. he called the cardiologist criminally negligent for causing jackson's death with an overdose of the powerful anesthetic. >> for michael's children, this case will go on forever because they do not have a father because of the actions of conrad murray. >> reporter: they argue nothing that he did or did not do was criminal. that it was jackson desperate for sleep who kill himself. the judge began the day by giving detailed instructions to the seven men and five women on the jury, telling the panels to

of physical activity to nearly 100,000 cases of cancer every year. >> reporter: she works really long hours, sitting behind the desk. exercise wasn't a priority until she found out that she had breast cancer. >> they diagnosed me and it was a wake up call. >> reporter: as many as 49,000 cases of breast cancer and 43,000 colon cancers every year could be due to the lack of physical activity and long periods of sitting down. >> sitting is bad for you, triggering some of the biological mechanisms that are important in cancer risks. >> it can increase if you sit tooing long. that's a big concern, since only 30% of americans say they get regular exercise. >> this is something that is modifiable and absolutely within the reach of every individual patient to make even minor adjustments in their

it's the shocking caught on tape beating of the 16-year-old girl by her own dad, who happens to be a family law judge down in texas. well tonight, new reactions to this 7.5 minute video all over youtube. scott broom is live for us after spending his day talking to the experts and the moms about the tape and, of course, all the conversations that have

been launched by something that's really hard to watch. >> everybody is talking about it. let me cover the news for this today. this tape is now up to 2.2 million hits. a police investigation of the judge has been launched. the judge's daughter told reporters today she posted this tape to the internet seven years after the beating because basically her father dared her to do it. >> it has never caused corporal punishment at all. >> this to me is an assault. >> reporter: she specializes in treating victims of abuse. >> i don't think that there is any way that you could ever call that discipline ever. and i think it's something for the parents to have labels. >> i spanked her, the mother was there. >> reporter: it is the texas family court judge, adams caught on tape again this week. >> in my mind i have not done anything wrong than disappoint my child after caught stealing. >> do you acknowledge that the beating was excessive? >> no, i'm not going to get

into any of that. >> reporter: i want my father to get all the help that he can get. >> that is hillary adam now 23 who made the tape seven years ago, punished for downloading illegal music files. that has been launched to vote him out of office. meanwhile, the tape has people talking again about corporal punishment. >> i think that will belong to, you know, 100 years ago. >> as the survival says, spare the rod and spoil the child. >> reporter: howard phillips says spanking is okay. >> and something a little bit stronger than a lump pat delivers a message. and it tells me that the child, that you really care about the child's behavior and that you are keeping an eye on it. that you love them. >> my experience for corporal punishment is not effective. the problem that you create is that you are teaching through aggression and fear and later try to teach the same children

to not use aggression and fear in their own behavior, sending a mixed message that's completely confusing. >> both experts i talked to today said that there is clearly a big stretch between spanking and the beating caught on tape. so much of a stretch that police in texas are looking at this, but unlikely to charge the judge because of a five- year statute of limitations. we don't have much time, scott, but what's legal? what can you do and when does the parent cross the line in terms of the eyes of the law? >> in all 50 states, it's illegal inside the home as long as the child is not injured and that it is still legal in schools in 20 states here. >> thank you, scott broom. we appreciate it. the tape is still hard to watch. back to you. >> it certainly is. one man is dead and another missing after being trapped in the long storm drain. this morning when the worker went into the store owned by the north texas municipal water district. he was overcome by poisonous gas fumes as another worker who went in to help him.

the body of one man was covered and feared that the other was simply washed away. investigators in illinois are trying to figure out why they jumped the tracks today, which burst into flames, happening earlier this morning. a dozen cars of the canadian national train derailed and at least two caught fire. no one hurt. local commuter train service was shut down in the area. apple iphone customers are complaining about the bug in the battery and apple says we hear you. there is a problem and the ios5 operating system. it is impacting the iphone, ipads, ipods. the company is working to fix the glitch and hope to post it online within a few weeks. shopping with amazon.com is going to cost you a bit more. the online retailers will start collecting sales tax beginning in february of 2012. it's for the company that previously fought efforts to force customers to pay the tax.

here is something that only the government could accomplish. find a way to waste money by making it. as of now, uncle sam is investing millions of dollars in making $1 coins, coins that may never see the light of day. we found those coins, but what happens to them now may well be up to you. >> is that legal? >> reporter: if you have never seen a $1 coin, most of them are not spent here, they are

piling up in here. one of several fancy government vaults where over and over again the dollar coin has come to die. >> now you have the presidential dollars. >> reporter: these dollars are the latest efforts to get americans to make the switch from green backs. they will eventually be engraved with the face of every dead president. >> this idea has been around for a long time. >> reporter: and they now work with the dollar coin alliance, saying that there is a simple they keep it. using dollar coins would save the government more than $5 billion over 30 years. >> and because the dollar coin lasts for up to 30 years, a piece of paper lasts for a year and half. >> reporter: that only works if people use them and so far they haven't. >> you can mistaken this one for maybe a quarter. >> reporter: and millions of dollar coins are filling up federal vaults like this one in baltimore. they cost $0.32 a piece to make and millions more to ship in

stores. >> if you were to faze out the paper dollars, those coins would get into circulation very fast. >> reporter: dump the $1 bill and americans will embrace the dollar coin because they won't have a choice. hey folks, i've got free money. you can either have a $1 bill or $1 coin, what would you pick? >> a bill. >> how come? >> they just weigh you down. >> i would take the coin. because my kids think they are cool. >> reporter: mixed results until we mentioned saving uncle sam billions. would that change your mind? >> yup, that would. >> wow, how come? >> i think anything that could help the economy right now is a good idea. >> reporter: so while the change is hard, perhaps not impossible. the mint is suppose to keep on making the presidential coins

until the year 2016. by that time they would have made about $2 billion worth of them. meanwhile they will deal with the issue. one bill would faze out the dollar note as they want, but the other bill would stop the $1 coins from being minted as long as there continues to be such a big surplus. which do you want, top? >> we were talking about it last night. i'm all for saving money, but they kind of look fake. it looks like the tokens we get at the driving range. >> are you sure this is really legitimate? >> but you know what, they are great currency for the tooth fairy. >> wow. >> yeah. love it. >> some showers may creep into the forecast after midnight. we'll start with the showers in mt. hood. it lowered about 2,000 feet overnight. anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of snow fell out in oregon.
