paid agreement to shut up. and we've been chasing this one down for you. what do you have? >> reporter: we've got new numbers, the new numbers for the cost of the settlements from the national restaurant association. numbers of the benefits coming from the cain campaign because of perceptions that he is being unfairly targeted. >> excuse me. >> reporter: cain says it is all politics. >> there are facts that are trying to destroy me personally as well as this campaign. >> reporter: but the story keeps growing. the website reports tonight that the restaurant association settled the harassment claims by one woman for far more than what cain had indicated paying her $45,000 for her silence. and the new york times reports that another woman who claimed she was harassed by cain got about $35,000. >> this morning, you know, i sent my e-mail, they drafted statements to the attorney for the restaurant association.

that they agree to release the statements, notwithstanding the confidential clause within the 1999 settlement agreement between my client and the restaurant association. >> reporter: joel bennett says they will refuse claims denial of the harassment allowed able to break the agreement to be quiet in exchange for money, but she will not identify himself. >> we believe that the statement that we have proposed is a fair and reasonable statement. it will be from me on behalf of my clients that will not identify her and that she will never be going public ny: the r association says that they will be responding to the letter tomorrow. a third woman told them that she considered creating a problem for her -- creating a problem for her, but that story is not true. >> and from the gop, they think that they are responsible for

that he would get her a new car, that he had texted her pictures of his estrange wife's new honda. and that he then murdered her and her 11-year-old son, william, took the car, giving it to his girlfriend. the state's attorney says he is still unsure if he will seek the death pent for curtis lopez. they require dna or video tape of the actual murder. but the prosecutor described what sounded like two cold- blooded pre-meditated murders. the reality is, it's not like tv. evidence like dna will take time to develop. >> reporter: prosecutors developed a picture, suggesting that he murdered hizzes strange wife and simply so he could -- that he murdered hizzes strange

wife and simply so he could please his new girlfriend. they said that he texted the girlfriend pictures of the car before he killed jane and william. and then he texted more pictures after the murders. >> here is your car. we're on our way. >> reporter: prosecutors told the judge that lopez beat jane in the head with a 30-pound weight while she was curled up asleep in her bedroom. and then they say that he picked up william at a sleepover. and drove him to his storage facility and grabbed what was likely one of william's baseball bats. then he took the 11-year-old out in the woods and beat him in the head with that bat until he died. >> the baseball bat was found just a short distance away. >> the public defender described the evidence against him as circumstantial. but the judge found it compelling and with what he

says is lopez's horrendous history of arrests for murder robbery, rape. the judge refused to set any kind of bail, anita? >> horrendous is the word. thank you. convicted of first-degree murder in the slaying of her co- worker. we'll hear from the veteran cop who oversaw the entire investigation. >> reporter: i'm here in police headquarters with the head of the major's crime division will talk about norwood's motive, state of mind, when her story unraveled. >> what it showed us is that somebody was extremely, extremely agitated and that this was a personal attack. >> reporter: he calls it one of the most horrendous crimes he has ever investigated in the 22 years with the suspect. no e cause for the savage

discipline policy. >> it's about changing this from being the punitive system to redevelop that student. >> reporter: class sizes and the staffing formula, sending more teachers out there is another hot button topic. all the newcomers say they wanted independent auditors to find more cost savings in this school system's $2.2 billion budget. >> that's the first thing we need to do is to look at how the over $300 million a year that we're spending on central administrative headquarters and their departments is being used. to cut some of that as well. >> reporter: several republicans say that the school system should not ask for anymore money from the board of supervisors and taxpayers the bucket that has been flat for years, despite increasing enrollment, they question that goal. >> reporter: he says no more significant cuts could be made, except those straight to the classrooms. >> we are slipping away from our world class school system. yeah, we cannot afford to keep cutting the budget and expecting a better outcome. we have been doing it for the

a woman who has died and a man is seriously injured. two firefighters are also ending up in the hospital after the early morning house fire. the victim has been identified as the 67-year-old. montgomery county firefighters are still investigating exactly what caused the fires that many neighbors believe that the homeowners alleged hoarding that could be to blame for the quickness on how fast the flames spread. the home also had no working fire alarms. arlington police are on the lookout for a man who exposed himself on a popular bike path. they now reported that it happened around 10:00 last wednesday night in the 1,400

block of lee highway that is right near the key bridge. now, this guy was apparently hiding behind the sign and shining a flashlight on his private parts as the jogger ran on by. he was wearing a suit and his face was covered with pantihose. okay, still ahead, if i tell you about an attack at an atm, you would probably think about a robbery. what was caught on tape at this bank machine. that's coming up next. an infection that caused a 6-year-old boy to lose both his legs. now, the family is suing the hospital and doctors are claiming that he was never prescribed anti-biotics, stopping the infection from getting so bad. and we are live outside the circuit court where the suit was just filed. >> reporter: anita, unfortunately that this is not unique. now, we just learned that a 2- year-old california girl, her family just won a $10 million lawsuit after having to lose her hand and both her feet because of the same types of

the aggressive infections. and the pain is still fresh for the family. >> i was i was shown something like that. no kid should have to go through this. >> reporter: he lost his legs last december, just one day after being rushed to the energy room at the baltimore washington medical center. >> and eric, he had almost every single sign in symptoms of a strep infection and a severe infection. >> reporter: high fever, rapid heart rate and swollen tonsil. mom said she asked for a strep test, but he never got one. >> you wonder, you know, why she didn't, knowing that his tonsils were stolen as they were. why she wouldn't have just swabbed, doing a simple strep test, where he would not be in the situation that we're in today. >> reporter: instead, the family says that he was diagnosed with nasal congestion and sent home. not with antibiotics, but

tylenol. and now, the one little active boy underwent emergency amputation to save his life. according to the state board of physicians, the 33-year-old daughter is a 2005 graduate of howard university college of medicine with a clean record in her short time as a maryland doctor. the hospital also released a statement expressing sympathy, saying in part, "the care he received was thorough and appropriate. eric's symptoms were simply not consistent with or indicative of this very aggressive form of infection." the hospital spokesperson also says, "this story is an important one for all parents to hear." anita? >> thank you so much. all right, new at 6:00 tonight, a bizarre lawsuit out of new york over a 2003 wedding that has already ended in divorce. he's suing the photographers from his nuptials claiming they missed the last dance and the bouquet toss and wants to be paid the $4,100 that he spent

on the photography and he wants another $4,800 to recreate the entire wedding so another photographer could shoot it. now again, remember, his ex- wife has already returned to her native country so all of that might be a little speculated. caught on tape tonight, not the kind of thing you would expect to get out of your atm, but when a man in spain went to get some cash, he was greeted by that, a little snake instead. he saw it when he went to reach for the money. he called police, but kept on his cell phone to snap some video while he was waiting. it turns out that the snake was stuck and later freed without anybody getting hurt at that atm. how it got in there though? >> you've got to wonder. >> that's just crazy. initially, you think that the only thing you might find there would be like a skimming device. >> but a snake? no. >> and that would keep me away from atm's for quite some time. >> yeah, don't even start thinking that way.

touchdown this season. it's a pretty impressive stat, but a daunting one as well when you're the redskins and you cannot put a single point on the board. so the skins offense, they need to somehow find their groove again if they want a w on sunday. the redskins defense, they also need to get their act together. the 49ers lead by the qb, alex smith. and they are 6th in the league in points and rushing yards. much of those rushing yards is thanks to the runningback frank gore. and the skins are giving up an average of 151 rushing yards per game. gore had 134 just last week against cleveland. and the defense definitely has their work cut out for them. >> and yeah, that is something that they need to run on out there, you know? and alex smith, he is just, well, managing the games. but they need to run that ball with no secrets. and you need to keep that going. >> and the defense, they might need to try to stop the 49ers without safety that will go out there. they said that out of practice with a knee injury. on offense, mike shanahan said

that he is feeling better today after a little setback yesterday and fred davis was limited again as well. all right, this is shaping up to be a not-so-good season for the big maryland sports teams. the turps football team is just 2-6 under their new head coach. there's not much hope for the basketball team either. losing jordan williams to the draft for about 10 to 12 weeks with a broken foot, just leaving eight scholarship players on the squad, which means the remaining seven are all walk ons. that's a tough sack for any coach to work with. and you'll get a first look to see what he has done with the team when they open up the exhibition plays tomorrow night. >> i do think that they are all getting better. knock on wood that today goes well. and whether or not we'll show it up. but as a coach, i know we have gotten a lot better. >> all right, time for the high school football game of the week poll on the list of the matchups this week. dunbar at coolidge.
