she hopes to be in a much better place health wise. nevertheless she will be out there cheering next week when battlefield begins their playoff march. anita, over to you. this is 9news now. we have more big news tonight in the herman cain front. an accuser decides she is not going to come forward in person and cain still gets wildly enthusiastic greetings from the republicans. bruce, talk about this for me. >> yes. the other big news is this poll that has come out. even with the scandal he is neck in neck with mitt romney nationally. by coincidence the two appeared one after the other at a conservative convention here in d.c. and guess who got more applause? >> my pledge to you as your president is back to the top of the hills where it belongs and i will never apologize for the greatness of the united states

[ cheers and applause >> reporter: herman cain bask in the adolaation of the faithful at the convention center. cain was once a hired speaking for a right wing group. >> this may be a breaking news announcement for the media. i am the coke brothers brother from another mother. >> reporter: a new washington post poll suggests seven in ten republicans think the sexual harassment allegations do not matter one wit when it comes to picking a presidential candidate. >> i think allegations are absolutely frivolous. >> my opinions on herman cain have not changed one bit. >> i don't care. i think herman cain would make a wonderful president. >> show me the proof. where is the soiled dress? >> reporter: the cheers for romney more muted. a promise to repeal obama care.

>> when i'm president that bad news will be over. >> what did you think cain or romney. >> cain. >> definitely? >> yes. >> doesn't matter about these accusations? >> accusations don't prove guilty. >> reporter: cain is still confident to mock mitt romney's use of teleprompters. >> whose telepomp teleprompters? i don't need them. >> having the public staying behind herman cain despite all these harassment allegations. >> do you think it would be different though if this woman came forward? >> that would be interesting. she was given this opportunity to come forward today and instead her lawyer came forward. he had a very kind of legalistic statement. wouldn't go into any details. as the national restaurant association waivings these confidentiality agreements and see if that makes a difference.

latest job numbers out today show for the first time since july the unemployment rate edged lower last week but the economy just added 80,000 jobs in october which is the slowest growth in four months. alexis christophorus is live in new york to break it down for us. >> reporter: lesli, the job crisis may be easing slightly but not fast enough for the till millions of out of work americans. investors largely unimpressed with today's job report and worries about europe cast shadows over stock. wall street knows it will take more than a slight drop in the unemployment rate to get it going going. >> reporter: trying to get his career going since graduating college a year and a half ago. >> i have held small jobs here at cafes and things like that to pay the pills but it is not really a job that will lead me to any type of career. >> reporter: stanton is one of millions stuck in place as the

job market stagnates. new labor department figures show things are improving slightly. the unemployment rate dropped to 9% from 9.1%. that's its lowest level since april. >> it is keeping up or close to keeping up with a population which means it is not strong enough to start lowering the unemployment rate. >> reporter: the economy added just 80,000 jobs in october. that's the fewest in four months. but there is also some good news. revised numbers show the economy added about 100,000 more jobs in august and september than first thought. the jobs report seems to have little impact here on wall street. instead investors seem more concerned about the debt crisis overseas. the stocks traded lower as investors waited on a confidence vote for greece's prime minister. investors also say news of a slight increase in hourly wages here at home isn't enough. >> we need to see wages grow substantially in order to really see the economy grow. >> reporter: william stanton

isn't giving up. >> i'm just going to keep looking, keep working side jobs. >> reporter: but it may take awhile. the federal reserve says it doesn't expect the unemployment rate to go any lower this year. and today's jobs report may be a modest improvement but president obama will still likely face voters with the highest unemployment rate of any post-war president. lesli? >> alexis christophorus, thank you. a big scare in a small city out in west virginia today. the post office had to be evacuated after employees reported a package exploded throwing white powder into the air. our peggy fox has been on the scene all day long live now with exactly how this all went down. okay, what's the deal, peggy? >> reporter: they thought they had an anthrax scare here that the post office. employees thought that they heard an explosion and they thought they saw white powder coming from a package. but it all turned out to be a false alarm. the response, however, from

local and federal response and emergency crews was impressive. they first quarantined the postal employees in a school bus in case they were contaminated. then they sent in a robot to test for air quality. and they in sent in a hazmat worker. all tests came back negative. >> that was the smoke that they were seeing, the light haze, it was due to the electrical issue inside the building. >> so i'm actually happy that they did respond the way they did because it could have been serious. >> thank goodness that everything is okay and nobody got hurt. it was something not real bad. >> reporter: now, after the all clear sign workers went back in to start sorting and sending out mail. it turns out what they heard was a pop but it came from a ballast from a fluorescent light burning out which then put out this whitish, bluish

police hope you can help them find two people suspected of stealing from a girl scouts troop. the kids were outside trying to sell cookies at the wal-mart along crane highway when this man walked up and asked how much the cookies cost then grabbed the cash box and ran. that's when witnesses say this man ran after him saying he would catch him. then both men ran into the woods together. we will tell you more about this investigation tonight at 11 p.m. a guilty plea today from the man charged with starting several fires including one that injured four firefighters. agreeing to serve 25 years in prison for setting a series of fires over the last three and a

half years but a judge will rule in february as to whether or not that agreement will be actually accepted. dues still faces charges in maryland for three fires in prince george's county. new information tonight in the case of the fire that severely damaged the georgetown libary four and a half years ago. a settlement means the district will get $6 million from the contractor's insurance carriers. contractors were renovating the building and fire started at wisconsin avenue. the second floor ceiling collapsed and there was major water damage to the library. still ahead. we are not quite ready to make a mission to mars but six people spent the last year and a half simulating one. we will talk about that. the scene believe this all started with a police chase. >> looked like a meteor shower. honestly, it looks like a van hit the car and ran over the ore. >> both the people ran. originally they were behind that gate look to go see if they could find somebody. >> reporter: now residents are telling us there was a female passenger in the suspect's vehicle that was appended and questioned by police. detectives are not confirming that for us but they do tell us they are working hard to identify this driver and they hope to have an arrest warrant very soon. lesli? >> all right, delia, thank you. researchers in moscow finished up a grueling simulation to mars. the crew suffered confinement, stress and fatigue but not the weightlessness. today they carefully walked out
