town, down into parts of st. mary's. a quarter mile in cambridge on the eastern shore. right now we have 27 in frederick, but 44 on the bay. and 30 with fog nearby. the good news is crews are making progress by an early morning accident. good morning, everybody. we have been talking about this since just about 4:30 this morning. eastbound on route 50 where there is an overturned truck and two vehicles involved in is it this accident. the right shoulder is now getting by. authorities are directing you by. but westbound is not affected past the weekend. no problems on the bw parkway. we'll go to the north side of town, if you are plan to head to the beltway, no problems to report up here or 270 in fact. let's take a live look at the beltway near silver spring.

singer in a gospel choir. the sophomore from baltimore was stabbed to death at an off campus party. police say another student has been charged. 22-year-old shanea riggins. dealing with courtney's death is indescribable. you never imagined that you'll be in college and you have to bury your friend. >> reporter: police have not said what the two women were fighting about. thank you, surae chinn reporting live this morning. the red lynn is back in service after a woman was struck and killed by a metro train. this happened just after 8:00 last night at the bethesda railway station. it appears the woman threw herself in the path of the train.

she died at the scene. police have not released her identity. red line trains were on a single track around the station while police completed their investigation last night. an eight-year-old girl is helping police after she told them four men tried to coax her into a van blocks from her home on satter field court. she was not hurt in this. police, however, are urging parents to be extra cautious. they say this is the fifth reported attempted abduction just since mid october. more than 1000 protesters gathered in front of the white house sunday. some were protesting bp's handling of a $20 billion compensation fund for victims of last year's gulf coast oil spill. others were there to protest construction of the keystone pipeline. that would run across six states to the gulf of mexico. the company behind the construction says it would create 20,000 jobs. the protesters say the pipeline

business headlines. investors are going to react to the latest profits results. results are already in for 433 out of the s&p 500 companies. checking the numbers friday the dow lost 61 points, the nasdaq dropped 12, the s&p 500 lost about 8. it is looking more and more like holiday hiring could perk up as we move closer to thanksgiving. our partners at usa today report some analysts and employers expect seasonal pay rolls to increase slightly more than expected. j.c. pennies is hiring 37,000 seasonal workers. and 7000 more jobs than last year. on friday the government reported the economy created 80,000 jobs in october, slightly less than forecast. well, remember when you were a kid, burger king would hand out cardboard crowns? well what is old is new again.

settling at 5:02 standard time. let's go inside now. monika santani has been a very busy lady. >> it has been busy. i wanted to first start off with telling you about mark brunswick trains. delays 20, to 25 minutes late. now an accident on the eastbound side of route 50. it happened at 4:00 this morning. if you are planning to head eastbound there are no issues getting to the beltway and inside the beltway. now accidents are a major part of what i report on, on a daily basis. and now a study done by cambridge systematic for aaa has put a price tag of guess what? $7.4 billion according to data collected by the national highway transportation administration. the study is called crashes versus congestion. what is the cost to society? it is found the annual cost of traffic crashes is nearly $300 billion nationally.

that is three times the $97.7 billion cost of congestion. this equates for an annual per person cost nationally of $1522. that cost is $13.63 per person. the cough of crashes are based on federal guidelines. those include medical emergency services, lost earnings, quality of life among other things. almost 33,000 people, 635 per week die on united states roadways each year. aaa is asking we focus more on addressing serious safety challenges. the study says we have the worst congestion in the united states at $1500 per person. more than three days a year wasted in traffic. mike aren't you glad you moved here? >> i am glad for the shift. not a lot of traffic on the roadways at 2:00 in the morning. the capital christmas tree is on its way.

welcome back. 5:43, your weather first on this chilly monday morning. we start with the bus stop forecast. there is some fog in spots, some of this is actually rather dense. that may slow you down a little bit. clear and chilly. 50s and 40s. that is just after 5:00 p.m. this afternoon. 44 degrees at 8:00 with light winds. that will be the case today, winds fairly light out of the suggest. the 4:00 p.m. reading of 61. highs today between 60 and 65. a very, very nice way to start the week. by 8:00 we are clear. chilly, 53 in town. upper 40s in the suburbs.

jerry sandusky, once considered joe paterno's heir apparent, has been accused. a graduate assistant saw him assault a boy in the shower. lavar arrington told the washington post he is always someone i admired and looked up to. arrington says he will have more to say later on his radio show. drew levenson is in pennsylvania with the latest on the investigation. former penn state defensive coordinator jerry sandusky is out on bail. the 67-year-old is charged with sexually assaulting eight underage boys over a 15 year period. he says he didn't do it. >> jerry is very, very depressed. very upset, distraught about the charges. >> reporter: sandusky coached at penn state for three decades before retiring in 1999. prosecutors accused him of assaulting some of the victims

on campus. the grand jury concluded sandusky had access to vulnerable children for a charity he founded for at risk kids. pennsylvania prosecutor linda kelly said this is a sexual predator who used his position within the community to repeatedly abuse young boys. in 2002 a graduate assistant reported he saw sandusky assaulting a ten-year-old boy in a shower. legendary head coach joe paterno passed curly and schultz say they did nothing wrong and deny the charges. still, they are expected to turn themselves in monday here in harrisburg u g. students at penn state are stunned. you don't expect those kinds of things. >> paterno released a stadium

sunday saying, among other things, he is shocked and saddened. drew levenson, cbs news, harrisburg, pennsylvania. in other news this morning, snoring is a problem that plagues nearly half of all adults. while it may cause many sleepless nights for your mate, snoring can be an indication of serious health problems. this morning i'm joined by expert larry torse and i. you are in town for a transportation conference? >> absolutely snoring is no longer just part of the bedroom. it is becoming part of the roadway. as we see more and more of the states legislate that people can't drive during the day or at off hours of the night. it is causing a problem to the rhythm and for snoring and sleep apnea. as a matter of fact, half of truckers have sleep apnea for the most part. we are finding the roadways are getting more crowded and the sleep apnea is affecting these people and our children and families. we are gathered together to

talk about how we can better affect that and stay away from some of the litigation that is happening both on the road from these tragic situations. you had some devices here that hopefully will help those who have problems with snoring. i have heard babies snore, toddlers snore is there something physically wrong that causes snoring? >> the more obese our population gets, the more the tissue around the throat. it has a vibrating specific. snoring is vibrating. sleep apnea is when it has a full closure. the best way to get tested is a sleep test that i lab. the next one coming up is absolutely these units, which are like he sleep apnea tests you take home. you put it around your chest. you hook up a few devices and you can get a great night's sleep in your own bed and get it tested to see if you have snoring or sleep apnea.

have you ever had that one teacher who made a really positive influence on your life? this morning we have a story of one such educator. berry berg again. >> now her students are returning to say thank you to her in her time of need. anita brickman has more. >> reporter: for 16 years berry bergmann ought english, speech and drama at walt whitman high school in bethesda. she never taught to the book or the test. her lesson plans came from the times. >> it was an incredible time to be alive. >> we copy it down eagle.

is in trouble. >> i remember click cadillacing down the hall in heels. now, i'm on a walker. >> reporter: she remembers the hair and those short skirts. the teacher has fallen on hard times. a stroke and other illnesses have particularren their toll, both physically and financially. >> i was going to be evicted. >> reporter: mrs. bergmann never had children, her students were her kids. now some of them are putting together a benefit to say thank you. >> we have been getting e-mails say my gosh, how she's changed my life. >> reporter: this school was home to me. >> when i had to move, it was the hardest thing in high life. >> it is my job. >> reporter: mrs. bergmann estimates she taught close to 2500 young people in her career
