stabbed to death. the suspected killer, another student. surae chinn has more. >> reporter: good morning surae. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. there will be grove counselors at school today. it is a tough day ahead. people are remembering 19-year-old frostburg state university student courtney mccoy. the school is located a few hours west of the dc metro. she was a physics major and talented singer. police say another student has been charged. 23-year-old shanea liggins of waldorf. >> we here at frostburg state university are reeling from this tragedy. we are very sad over the loss of such an incredibly wonderful

young woman. someone who had such amazing promise for the future. >> reporter: that is the president of the university. meanwhile police have not said what the two were mighting about, although courtney's aunt says courtney was trying to break up a fight. unfort that i cxfing -l this is the second deadly stabbing among female students in maryland. a couple of months ago police charged 19-year-old bowie soup for fatally stabbing dominique fraser. the baltimore sun saying one student was killed and another was injured. thanks to surae. we are now less than a year away from election say 2012. the big race is the one for president. joining us now with a look at the year ahead is ed o'keefe. of course we know the president

is going to be the representative for the democrat party. the republican race is more than a little mud would than ever changing it seems lately. how do we as we watch herman cain is in the lead, especially after the things that went on in iowa. how does it develop over time? it seems his scandals are not taking to him. >> he survived a week and the fact that none of these women who accused him have come forward, suggest that now at least he is doing okay. the fact he has money mitt romney is well funded rick perry had $17 million in the bank suggests those three certainly are in shape going into the new year. of course herman cain can tell you now a week in politics can change everything. you know all sorts of things may come up we have had all different types of candidates

emerge and the at this point it seems mitt romney is well equipped and you cannot count out rick perry yet because he has so much money in the bank. mitt romney has been around regardless of everything blowing up around him in the republican party. does moving forward from mitt romney the old adage apply? if your opponent is going to blow themselves up, let them. >> he definitely has the slow and steady wins the race mentality now. what they have to be nervous about is if you can't break this 20%. virtually every pollination wide he can't break 3%. the question is why is that? are people justify trying to go through all these other candidates, get over them and go with mitt romney. is he the last one stand something it's -- standing?

environmentalists to washington. the protestors, some dressed as polar bears, demonstrated outside the white house sunday. they called on president obama to kill the pipeline. superrers contend the pipeline will create much needed jobs. members of the occupy atlanta movement are vowing to return to a park where there were several arrests this weekend. 19 demonstrators were taken to jail by officers in riot gear. they were arrested on charges of refusing to leave with drove park. a lone protest tore was arrested sunday -- protester was arrested sunday. in four minutes a group that is helping learn the trades and get solid jobs. up next hours has our back to school and back to work

getting by. right before 704. i'll have more on this and other area roadways. leaders in greece will decide who will be leading that country from the time being. it is part of a deal to hopefully end the financial crisis there. that is one of the stories making news. the prime minister announced yesterday he will resign. it is part of a deal for a new coalition government there the move to make sure gross gets the money it needs. 2.9 magnitude aftershock in central oklahoma followed a pair of earthquakes. there is plenty of damage, but no reports of any injuries there. hero dogs will be honored on the hill today. a list of honorees will include those work when iraq and afghanistan. they are all winners of the first ever american humane society hero dog awards.

all this week we are focusing on our nation's veterans. unemployment for vets is higher than the national average but one group is dedicated to changing that. it is called helmets to hard hats. darrell good to have you here with us. >> i come from the construction background. i served from the united states navy and the united states army. it was a perfect fit. >> so what kind of jobs are we talking about when you take off the helmet and put on the hard hat? >> anywhere from project management down to carpentry, plumbing, pipefitting, whatever it may be, whatever you can think of this construction. >> some of those careers you talked about welding, pipefitting, do you have to have the training the experience before you can take advantage of this? >> it can certainly be helpful.

culpepper at 34. we had 37 in newline this morning, 36 in gaithersburg. quarter mile visibility in frederick and in culpepper. salisbury and cambridge they are at half mile visibility. a mile and a half three quarters in andrews. yes, where the fog is formed in those areas, it is thick, that is going to slow you down a bit. humidity 93% this morning. as we look at the national satellite and radar. a big rise here to the east. that is going to keep us on the mild side of the equation. under the jet stream we have showers and storms firing all the way up toward st. louis and even into indianapolis this morning. we've got the ridge of high pressure in control. we are going to sit high and dry for the next few days. today 64. back in the 30s and 40s tonight. could be patchy fog late.

near 70 wednesday before a front brings a chance of a shower thursday. monika santani timesaver traffic, ups and downs this morning,. it has been a busy monday morning, that is for sure. the good news is the beltway all around town is looking good. the bad news is longstanding accident remains on the route 50. authorities remain on the scene, it was an overturned box truck. it kind of broke into pieces, there were minor injuries involved. right now the right side of the roadway is getting by. that done mean it is not causing slow traffic, really both directions, trying to take a look at what's going on, although that side the lanes are open headed to the beltway. an accident on the northbound side of 95, stay to the left to get around that.

have frost and patchy, dense fog. sunrise coming up at 6:41 standard time. here's a look at your day planner. temperatures rising nicely today by noon in upper 50s. we drive home at 5:00 just before sunset at 5:02 today with a reading of 5 degrees. visibility some of the bigger issues from leesburg toward sterling and culpepper. all at one quarter mile. frederick your visibility drops to zero. along with cumberland and parts of the eastern shore. a couple of spots like dc and packs river 40. thank you so much howard, good morning, everybody. since about 4:00 this morning prince georges county police and maryland state police have been on the scene of the accident on the eastbound side of route 50 right near route 704.

an overturned truck and two vehicles. in the meantime you can see things very slow. on the eastbound side. westbound it is everyone stopping to take a look. those lanes have remained open since the accident began. in stafford county right now, west of i-95 there is this accident on route 610 west. again west of 95. you got the normal show traffic on 95. let's take a look at springfield all lanes have been open on 95 really just coming up from the river. now let's take a look at 395 at duke street where you have the off and on slow traffic leaving the landmark area up to the 14th street bridge. northbound 25 accident clean up as well after pennsylvania avenue. right now i have a commuter alert. you are going to see some changes this morning on the inner loop at route 123 in fairfax county. joining us to tell us all about it is john lynch.

he is a regional director and joins us live from tie isn't's corner. good morning how are you? >> great. happy to hear there is now this new lane configuration through the i wanter change at 123, tell us about that. >> on friday night, we made the switch as you can see to the outer loop of the, or inner loop of the beltway. and switch those lanes back to the right hand side. this allowed us to then reconfigure the ramps, eliminating the left turn lane on 123. and then adding an additional capacity there. so all your lanes will be exiting to the right now. >> it has been really tough to exit onto the beltway. it started 2010 in october. this ended about a year early, didn't it?

>> we didn't expect it to be later in 2012. we started in about october with the switch the signal in the left turn lane. we thought it would be about 18 months, we are happy to bring that to the tyson's area prior to the shopping season. we think that will help. congratulations on finish that go phase early. the hot lanes project is the biggest improvement on the beltway since 1964. can you tell us a little bit about how the hot lanes work? >> the hot lanes are going to provide additional choices to the commuters both have an standpoint. we'll have lanes added to the beltway for the first time for transit and carpoolers. also those that want to have a time frame where they know they can get there to their destination can pay a toll and use the hot lanes and have a time when they can get to work, pick up their child from childcare. definitely will be amen

students will be returning to classes this morning. no doubt it will be a tough day. counselors will object hand to help them get through the day. they are all remembering an incredible woman who dreamed of being a singer one day. 1-d-year-old courtney mccoy was born in baltimore and involved in choir both on and off campus. >> just a ray of light. always very positive. just touched so many lives in her short years here on this earth. loved, loved to sing. she is just my little song bird. tell general, promising future, just taken away too soon. >> reporter: that was courtney's aunt michelle lasley. police say courtney was at an off campus party when a fight broke out. that is when shanea liggins stabbed her outside a home in

frostburg. liggins is being held without bond for first and second degree murder. u ray chin reporting live. now to another shocking story from a college campus. a former stan football coach at penn state is now accused of molesting eight boys over a 15 year period. two administrators have stepped down amid accusations they knew about the abuse and covered it up. >> reporter: former penn state football coach jerry sandusky was arrested over the weekend. accused of abusing eight boys. head coach joe paterno says he was told in 2002 about an alleged inappropriate incident involving sandusky in a locker room shower. paterno alerted the athletic director. that athletic director and another school official stepped down. if sandusky is convicted,

the washington examiner quotes a police union official who says the most recent failure? halloween night. the problem led to confusion as a pepper spray was released in the foggy bottom station. the agency hopes to seek contracts this month, but it will still take years to upgrade all that have radio equipment. the hearing is scheduled today for the so-called big box stores. there is a new bill that would require large retail stores to enter into a community benefits agreement with at least three civic organizations, assistance from the county would be limited without the agreement. the large retail store is one that occupies a footprint of at least 75,000 area feet. andrea? >> thank you, mike. we are focused on getting you hired. as every monday, we focus on

jobs. we are looking at a profession that is in demand. chris brink man from robert half technology joins us and you are focusing on internet developers. what do they do? >> a dot net develop soldier someone who programs and develops using microsoft technology. essentially dot net allows multiple computer devices to work together, using web services. >> why is it such high demand? especially in our area? >> unemployment went down to 9.0% as recently as last week. the average is far less than 3.5%. and so there aren't many of them out there, and certainly aren't many skilled application develop enters programmers available. so that is what puts them in demand. i think secondly, from a sally
