7:00 pm
>> he put his hand on my leg under my skirt and reached for my genitals. he also grabbed my head and brought it towards his crotch. >> my first response in my mind and reaction was, i don't even know who this woman is. these unanimous allegations are false and now the democrat machine in america has brought forth a troubled woman to make false accusations. >> as for karen kraushaar, cain settled her accusation, but cain calls it a nuisance complaint. >> that is the one that i recall that filed a complaint, but it was found to be baseless. >> karen kraushaar says she would like to appear in a joint news conference with all the other women accusing cain so that the public can judge the quote, collective body of
7:01 pm
evidence against him. bruce leshan, 9news now. >> so the question now, what is next for herman cain? can his campaign weather all these accusations? did he put the ship right with that conversation with the press today? steven farnsworth is here to talk about that. he is a professor of communications. compared to what cain had been doing, this had to be a step forward, right? >> absolutely. this is a very difficult environment for herman cain and there has been a whole series of problematic releases, stories, counterstories that he has had. he had a will the of time to get his story straight and it looks like you are finally hearing a consistent message from herman cain. >> a lot of people declaring him dead man walking, does that change? >> this is not a he said, she said story. is this a he said, she said, she said story. and that makes a dramatic difference in the way that ordinary people are going to look at this. now no doubt about it. there will be people convinced that all of these women are
7:02 pm
lying. there's a huge conspiracy here, but ultimately, the evidence here is increasingly making it less and less believable that herman cain did nothing inappropriate. >> isn't it fair to argue that herman cain is not talking to you and he's not talking to me. he's talking to his base in the country, which so far stuck by him. they have been sending him money and they still support him. >> i think the woman who spoke up yesterday, who detailed specific incidents and specific places and specific times has really dramatically increased the pressure on herman cain and really undermined the credibility. again, we are still looking to see how much of this is true. we are now talking about specific things that can be identified. you know, was there a hotel upgrade? what was the situation with respect to the dinner? when did other people see the two of them together? this is a level of investigation that is going to keep this story going. herman cain did not settle this issue. if anything, he's going to have to take a lie detector test. >> he doesn't go back to campaign as usual, but on the
7:03 pm
other side, if herman cain is telling the truth here, are we in the media treating him fairly? how high should the bar be when it comes to reporting? >> however high the bar may be. some other media outlet will have lower standard for publication. so in fairness to reporters, it's appropriate to recognize that it's a competitive industry. it is a competitive business. and particularly now when social media and twitter and other media outlets are out there. everyone will be chasing everyone else. even if channel 9 wants to have the highest standards out there, it will lose rating points to other stations. this is life in the big city. this is the reality that everybody in politics has to appreciate and herman cain is now, it's his turn at the wheel. >> that suggestion she made that all four women get together and go on stage and have a joint press conference, would that be it for herman cain? >> i tend to think there will be people that will believe herman cain. that believe there's a
7:04 pm
conspiracy no matter what they say collectively. i think it would be a death wish for the republicans at this point to nominate herman cain, because these kinds of stories do not go away. there's the drip, drip, drip, that will continue. even if he weathers this and somehow imaginary world becomes a republican nominee. he will be very easy pickings for democrats. >> in other words, you think it's unlikely the democrats are doing this to discredit him, because they would like him to win. >> absolutely. i think the democrats would love to run against herman cain and that was true before these scandals. a more professor, thanks for the conversation. we appreciate the insight tonight. obviously this one goes on. we move on to yet another big story today. legendary head coach, joe paterno could be the next one out at penn state because of that school's on going sex abuse scandal. this according to the "new york times." the school is discussing his exit and it could come in just
7:05 pm
weeks or perhaps even days. now paterno had been scheduled to hold a weekly press conference talking about saturday's game, but university officials canceled that one and later in the day, paterno told reporters outside his home, he does want to respond to questions about the university sex scandal. >> paterno's former defensive coordinator is charged with sexually assaulting eight boys over a 15 year period. the coach has been criticized for not going to the police after he was told about one of the assaults back in 2002. now the coach did tell his supervisors as the law requires. but they failed to alert the authorities. paterno's son says his father has no intentions of stepping down. so, should police and the fbi be able to track your car using a gps without getting a warrant first? that's what happened to antwon jones and that gps led the cops to a stash of drugs and
7:06 pm
weapons. today the justice heard arguments from both sides on whether police -- against unreasonable search and seizure. >> police without his knowledge and without his consent installed a device on his car, which would be a criminal trespass. >> we aren't saying don't use a gps. we're saying if you're going to use it, get a warrant. >> attorneys for the justice department argue that antwon jones was using public streets and therefore had no expectation of privacy. they say they could have gotten the same result by nearly watching and following it. >> next week, the dc council will aim at gas price gouging. that measure would require every gas station to be operating independently. it would also allow station operators to buy from whomever has the best price. the city investigation in the group went down. the springfield, virginia,
7:07 pm
based company owns or operates more than 40% of gas stations in d.c., including every single exxon station. the company is being sued by some of its own station owners who say it over charges them for gas. well just when you thought the weather just couldn't get any better today, it got a little better. top, is it going to keep getting better? >> i'm sure there was one, but sunny and 68 with light winds, that's tough to beat. we are going to keep it one more day, derek. here are the temperatures right now. temperatures fall pretty quickly now after sunset. grab a light jacket. 58 downtown. 46 in manassas. 45 already in culpeper and 55 in gaithersburg. so for tonight, clear and chilly. give it a one blanket night. light winds. we'll come back. we'll talk about a cold front. what that means for our thursday and how drastically that's going to lower temperatures for the weekend. still ahead tonight, the driving range dispute. a church thinking about going to court over damage caused by the golf guys right next door.

7:15 pm
opportunities to students that are struggling in their classes. he also claims that can help them get better grades. so, does the county's plan really help students by making it easier to play sports or could it send the wrong message and encourage athletes to focus less on the classroom and more on the playing field. we encourage you to send your thoughts to the mcginty's mail bag. for golfers, there's likely a little more pleasing to the ear than the sound of a club hitting the golf ball. but remember the church in fairfax, that sound actually instills fear. you see, the presbyterian church is located on the other side of the top golf driving range and the church's property has literally been pelted by golf balls for years now. but as kristin fisher reports, the issue came to a head last april when a youth pastor was hit on the head. >> ball came through the trees, hit him on the head. he fell to the ground. stunned, but not unconscious.
7:16 pm
>> rob is an elder at the presbyterian church. over the last year, he says he has found more than 2600 golf balls on the church's property. >> many car windows have been smashed. office windows have been smashed. >> the latest happened last sunday. >> he says the golf ball shattered the window. >> our staff lives with the fear of being hit by a golf ball any time they come through here. >> the golf balls are coming from the drive range. >> we have been good neighbors when there's been an issue, such as a broken window, we fixed it, and we have done so without hesitation. >> willie wilson says they have done everything possible. they put up nets, posted warning signs, even banned golfers from using drivers on sundays. now you would need to be a pretty good golfer to hit the ball over the net. you would have to hit the ball 300 yards. but it happens. in fact, in just two minutes, i
7:17 pm
found 12 golf balls that made it over the net. i have to say, kind of making me wish i had a helmet. >> we have done what is right and we will continue to do what is right to show that we care about the community and that we are advocates for doing the right thing. we don't want to see them move or close down. we just want the golf balls to come to an end for the safety of the congregation. >> kristin fisher, 9news now. >> we should note the church is worried about this, they taken the matter to court. they want top golf to be prosecuted and a special grand jury has agreed. so now, this could go to a trial in january. top, you're a golfer. can you hit the ball more than 300 yards? >> no. they must be the best golfers at the range ever to have a dozen balls in two minutes? doesn't happen. i think higher nets will take care. >> that's what you have to think. >> 68 today. not a cloud in the sky.
7:18 pm
not a breeze. it was perfect. >> it was convertible weather. >> let's talk about three things. let's go to the satellite picture radar combined. we don't talk about alaska often unless there's an arctic outbreak. we are going to go up to alaska. there's a storm in the baring strait. flood warnings across south western alaska and through the baring strait. we are talking winds of 75 miles per hour. gusts could exceed 100 miles per hour. it's going to be a monster storm. flooding and blizzard conditions. we'll show you the second thing. this is the frontal system that will roll through our area on thursday. looks pretty potent right now and it certainly was last night, producing tornadoes in oklahoma and kansas. it's going to weaken in terms of the precipitation by the time it gets here. it will usher in a market change for friday and this is tropical storm shaun out in the

however, you can make your donations in safeway stores. >> the conviction of michael jackson's doctor. rob is really glad that dr. conrad murray is locked up, but it shouldn't stop there. everyone in camp michael knew that he had an addiction to prescribed medication. he knew what medication he wanted and what doctor out there would be sane enough or insane enough to honor his request. yet not anyone to include his family or staff did anything about it to help him get off his addiction. if an intervention would have occurred, his life could have been spared. two things, first, interventions are no guarantee. they fail all the time. secondly, how do we know they didn't try? over on the wusa9 facebook page, a former defensive coordinator facing child abuse charges and joe paterno may be days or weeks from being forced out for not calling in law

enforcement when he found out about it. greg says joe pa, you must go. i hate that joe pa has to make this his last season, but he should have followed up on these allegations. i don't care how many games he has won, kids were hurt and he knew about it. not so fast, says richard. paterno did nothing wrong. he did the right thing. he shouldn't be penalized. this is why the world is so screwed up. the good get penalized and the bad get off scot-free. that opinion is in a distinct minority. miranda says joe, it's over. joe paterno is worshiped. he is acted as the moral compass for the community and college football for years when behind closed doors, he let crimes against children go unreported. disgusting. okay folks. the fact is, joe paterno 184 is 84 years old. it's sad so see him go out
