the first time in 46 years without paterno as head coach. susan mcginnis for cbs news, washington. according to the rape, abuse and incest, 36 states including pennsylvania and virginia require only people in certain professions to report crimes of child abuse. those professions include healthcare, education, and law enforcement. 15 other states including maryland are much more stringent. they require anyone, regardless of profession, to report child abuse to police. >> we're also following another sports-related story, a very wild story. washington nationals catcher wilson ramos has been kidnapped in his home country of venezuela. >> nationals officials say he was getting ready to play when he was taken. we're told ramos was with his family when four armed men abducted him. the kidnappers have yet to contact his family with any information. ramos completed the rookie

season with the nationals batting '267 with 15 homers. nationals say they'll release a statement when they learn more information about the situation. in other news, the u.s. air force regularly burned the body part of u.s. service members and had them buried in a virginia garbage dump. the air force admitted to "the washington post" it was demonstrate practice between 2003 and 2008 and family members were typically not informed. >> gary nurenberg has more on this disturbing story and comments from the workers who first reported the problem. >> reporter: for some who had borne the battle in iraq around afghanistan that, care meant having body parts cremated, then incinerated then dumped into this landfill according to new reporting by "the washington post." it is the latest revelation following an investigation of port mortuary at dover air force base where remains of service members are repatriated after death abroad, an office of special letter indicated there was gross mismisment,

negligence and dishonesty. >> in two cases, body parts were either lost or misplaced. >> i went through the entire facility. every single rack. i couldn't find it. >> in another case, the arm of a marine was sawed-off in order to fit him into his dress uniform. the families not told. >> we asked them more than once why they wouldn't go to the families and let them know what had happened. their response was very clear. they couldn't be trusted. they might go to the press. >> when these three mortuary workers blew the whistle -- >> i was terminated. >> the disciplinary actions have since been rescinded. >> the common practice of dumping unidentified body parts in a landfill was stopped in 2008 and burned unidentified parts are now buried at sea. from the three workers who helped disclose the cover-up, now -- >> i can guarantee the families that their loved ones are being treated with honor, dignity and respect bar none. and if we see that they're not,

we've all jeopardized our careers, our jobs to ensure that that happens. >> gary nurenberg, 9news now. in presidential politics, republican hopefuls squared off last night at a debate in michigan. while herman cain's sexual harassment scandal did come up -- >> the candidate's focused much of their economy on the economy and president obama's policy. one of the most memorable moments involved texas governor rick perry. he said if he were elected, he would eliminate three federal agencies. he named commerce and education but he drew a blank on the third, even suggesting -- suggestion by his rivals. he later laughed it off. they'll meet again saturday at a debate in south carolina right here on cbs. >> he basically went oops. republican presidential candidate herman cain has answered the allegations of sexual misconduct and he says, of course, flat out, he didn't do it. his accusers are telling another story. >> who's telling the truth.

ken molestina got an expert opinion on the outward signs of honesty and lies. >> i'm not a crook. >> i did not have sexual relations with that woman. >> they're two of the biggest lies ever told on camera. wondering minds are now asking if this is also a fib. >> i have never acted inappropriately with anyone. >> that was herman cain on tuesday night, responding to a series of allegations like this one from one of his accusers, susan bialek. >> he put his hands on my leg. >> chris silver is an expert at the body language institute in washington. we asked him to offer his observations on cain's and bialek's news conferences. in both cases, he says there are microexpressions or signs that raised red flags in both their statements. he says king's hand gestures and facial expressions are some of the biggest expression. take the slant of his mouth after these words. >> went through a series of

months. state-run television says some buildings which were damaged in last month's deadly quake have collapsed on the force of wednesday's 5.7 magnitude. there is no word on how many people may be trapped. residents in western alaska are digging from out one of the worst storms to hit that state in nearly four decades. the blizzard battered coastal communities wednesday with snow and hurricane-force winds, knocking out power and ripping off roofs. yesterday afternoon, the city of nome was battered by a storm surge of eight to ten feet. >> we all recognize the experiences -- bill keene has died. keane died from congestive heart failure. he's survived by five children. his wife died several years ago. the family in the cartoon is based on his family. his son, jeff, has been working with his dad on the strip and

ahead. we'll have that outlook and of course, telling you about the weekend in the necks five minutes. monika has a look at timesaver traffic. >> howard, dense, patchy fog around the area especially to the east and south of town. here's what it looks like trying to come across the bay bridge. watch out for the dense fog as well in southern maryland and across la plata. we'll have more on this coming up in my next report at 4:47. andrea, back to you. thank you, monika. time for the first your money segment of the morning. >> jessica has today's headlines. maybe we should buy more olive oil and pasta to help out our friends in italy. >> this has been a bad couple of days. wall street seeing its worst sell-off in two months yesterday. you can blame worries about europe again sending investors running for the exit. wednesday's losses put the major stock indexes back in negative territory for the year. check the numbers here at home. the dow starts this morning,

11,780. that's right. a 389 point loss yesterday. take a look there. the loss of over 3%. nasdaq had almost a 4% drop with 105 points shaved there. the s&p 500 was down by 46 points. we're saying chow because we were talking about the debt situation in italy. getting at a critical stage at this point. it is third largest economy in the euro zone. some say it is too big to fail. if italy were to go belly up, it would have a domino effect on countries such as spain and portugal. in greece, talks to form a new government has collapsed. that raises concerns about whether that country can secure another emergency loan and avoid bankruptcy. and the euro took one of its biggest hits of the year against the dollar. that makes things cheaper for americans travelling in europe. bad thing is though it makes u.s. goods more expensive overseas. that can put a big dent on exports. you're talking companies like exxon mobil, general electric, they get at least 30% of their revenue from europe.

so, the exchange rate changes really kill them, especially when it comes reporting time. >> i read some of the other effects, too. some of the major banks are so heavily invested like bank of america, they took a huge hit, too. they could smack us. >> we saw mf global blowing up over there. it really has an -- that's the problem with the global economy. it is good on one hand. >> we can't say we're in it to ourselves. does china own part of italy, too? >> china actually has been taking a big step forward in a leadership position, buying up a lot of the debt of the european countries. they're facing the situation where a couple of years back, they were buying a lot of our debt. >> wow. >> thanks, jess. >> sure thing. >> so, too much salt. is it bad for you? or not. >> how about moderation. a new study suggests no salt or not enough salt can be just as bad. that story and more coming up

good morning, it is thursday and 4:44. the party is over! the great weather we had leading up to today is going to change. >> yeah, but you know, it is not going to be so bad and the weekend is looking good. >> hooray for that. >> if you like to do stuff outside, today may not be the best day. tomorrow be a little tough, too, with the colder temperatures and the breeze blowing out of the west.

at times gusting over 20 miles per hour. you'll feel every bit of the 45, 50 degrees we'll get to in the afternoon. we start you off with a day planner. we do have a day planner with a dense fog advisory. do have problems with visibilities, down very low east and southeast of town from howard county and everybody east of 95 for the most part. especially as you head into the northern neck. southern maryland, the eastern shore. we've got visibilities. by the way, this goes until 9:00 a.m. we have visibilities in spots between zero and a quarter mile. this is patchy, dense fog. andrews has come up a little bit. down at the tappahannock airport, zero. a 16th at baltimore. flying out of bwi this morning. there could be some delays up there. annapolis, leonardtown, pax river, cambridge, all reporting quarter mile visibility. closer to the metro though, our visibility still up at westminster, they're down to one half-mile. as far as the bus stop forecast this morning, mostly cloudy skies with that dense fog, mainly east.

44 to 52. sunrise at 6:45 and it sets at 4:59 before 5:00. 9:00, we're at 53. might be some isolated showers this morning. best chance of showers will be the middle of the day with the front coming through. winds northwest 10 to 15 gusting to 20. the temperatures this afternoon will actually be fading into the low 50s, maybe even the upper 40s by the time we get to 5:00 p.m. there with northwest winds at 10 and a temperature of 49. wind chills will become a factor later this afternoon and this evening. right now, we've got a milder 54 in annapolis with the fog, easton is 48. it is 50 from cambridge without the fog, mid-40s in frederick to culpepper now. 50s though from hagerstown down toward winchester. nationally, the west is pretty quiet although look at this storm here. you know about the big storm in western alaska. watching john off the east coast. here in the great lakes headed into canada. an area of low pressure

bringing the rains and snow to the u.p. this thing is trailing a cold front. you can see the showers from new york state back to virginia. then they sort of break up. they're going from pennsylvania north now and down to the south and west of us. i think with the front coming through this afternoon, we've got the chance for a few showers especially middle of the day. may be a lingering shower south and these afternoon or early this evening. with a brisk northwest winds kicking in, we clear out tonight. mountain snow showers overnight. then we're in pretty good shape tomorrow into saturday. by saturday, we'll start to get rid of the chill. veterans day, it will be brisk around here. today, mid-50s. temps falling off in the afternoon. tonight, we're in the 30s. only recovering to 50 tomorrow. the winds today, northwest 10 to 15. westerly tomorrow 10 to 20. saturday, less wind. milder temperatures. upper 50s to near 60. about 65 on sunday. the next week, mid to upper 60s mood and tuesday. but tuesday, maybe late monday, sometime in that frame will be the next chance for some

showers but at least the weekend is looking good, monika. >> it is looking good. i want to repeat what you said, howard in terms of reduced visibility. as howard said, zero to a quarter mile visibility in some spots to the east and south. you want to be especially careful out in those areas. we're going to take you first to southern maryland. here's what it looks like on the beltway, things are fine down here, route four, route five. let's take a look at the beltway near route 50. as you can see, it is foggy. i took a look at the bay bridge as well. very tough down there as you head toward the beltway on route 50. here's what it looks like in the new carrollton area. back over to the maps. we'll go over to the beltway again and head to the southside of town at the wilson bridge where there are no problems to report. this actually looks fine right now. both loops of the beltway. you want to be especially careful, east of 95, especially route 5 and route 301 as you come out of la plata and as well in brandywine. they're all incident-free right now. keep the speed limits down. coming up, we'll go up into

make sure after you finish, clear out your web browser. that gets rid of some of those cookies. >> i didn't know that. >> clean out your web browser and then reset. >> as an aside, i bought a tie online. yesterday, i got three of the exact same catalogs from the same company on the same day. the cookies weren't working that day. >> they weren't. >> women who use or abuse alcohol suffer a certain type of brain damage, three times faster than men do. the new study finds women suffer 50% reduction in the serotonin function of their brain after four years of excessive drinking. compare that to men, the same amount of damage takes 12 years to happen after abusing alcohol. the part of the brain affected controls moods, impulse and sleep. women trying to lose weight may want to eat high protein dairy foods. a study found the boost in protein helps bone health in overweight and menopausal women. the findings are important because many women on calorie-

restricted diets suffer from bone loss. a new two drug regimen is extending the lives of lung cancer patients. research team at johns hopkins tested a new procedure called epicgenic therapy. on patients with typically deadly type of lung cancer. the patients lived two and a half months longer than those who received the standard treatment. there is new research out challenging the philosophy that a low salt diet is good for you. researchers cited data from several studies in this. they say eating less salt does help lower your blood pressure. however, they say it also raises the cholesterol and some fats in the blood. the american heart association, as you might imagine is disputing the study. the organization points out the study did not show the increase in bad cholesterol which is the kind that concerns doctors. you have just a couple of days left to join food drive 9 and help local food banks. 9news now has teamed up with the boy scouts to make donating

first. we're looking at visibilities right now. lots of small numbers off to the east from westminster through prince george's county, andrews air force base. we've got a lot of very dense fog. quarter mile or less. east of town, including howard county, carroll county, points east. few showers around also at times today. temperatures struggle to get to 55 with a brisk northwest wind and turning colder later this afternoon. monika? >> howard, we'll take a look right near andrews air force base as you just said. poor visibility due to the fog in areas south and east of town. here's what it looks like near route 4 heading southbound to the wilson bridge. i'll have more on this and other area roadways coming up in my next report. andrea, back to you. thank you, monika. things are changing at bwi thurgood marshall airport. the facility is undergoing a $100 million renovation project and one of the first changes passengers will encounter is a movement of airtran airways. >> the airport's second largest carrier is being relocated to the ab concourse. airtran is scheduled to make

the move into the terminal currently occupied by southwest airlines next week. another expansion project at bwi are scheduled to be finished by the summer of 2013. >> in less than two weeks, the full-length of the intercounty connector will be open in maryland. >> 18 mile toll road connects interstate 270 in gaithersburg to i-95 in laurel. the first seven miles opened in january. scott broom got a tour of the final phase. >> i'm scott broom in montgomery county taking a look at the controversial itc highway, about to open november 22nd. belinda peters, the project director for construction conducting a bus tour of the latest 10.3 mile section of the road. the critical link that will finally connect i-270 in gaithersburg to i-95 north of the beltway in prince george's county. >> you have to have an ez pass to ride the highway. we're encouraging everybody to get one. >> harold bartlett is executive
