weekend, let's hold out hope. i think it will be a good one. here is a look at our day planner on this thursday morning. temperatures will be warmer midday and get colder this afternoon. winds kick up out of the northwest. 53 at noon. there will be some showers at times, especially middle of the day. with that front coming through. right now, 49 if and mostly cloudy. foggy to the east. the showers, there they go into pennsylvania right now. we don't have anything to show you on live doppler 9000 hd. that's quiet. a dense fog advisory until 9:00 a.m. southern maryland. prince george's county, howard, anne arundel, up toward baltimore county, too. carroll county is not in it. westminster, visibility there has been reported down a quarter mile. we could argument carroll county would be in it. baltimore. andrews down to 3/4 now. look at the areas from zero to quarter mile. the southern neck and the eastern shore, be careful out there. monika? >> be careful out there. keep your speed limits down because when volume is so light, it is easy to speed up. with the visibility, it will be tough out there. overall, the beltway looks

were dumped in a northern virginia landfill. 9news now reporter surae chinn is outside the air force memorial with more on this story and it is gut-wrenching, surae. >> it really is. you have to wonder how this could have happened. how will we just finding out about it years later. thanks to whistle-blowers who worked at this dover mortuary, run by the air force, shed some light on the disturbing case, disturbing actions made at the mortuary there. the office of special council confirms body parts of active service members killed in action were lost by the port mortuary. they were incinerated then dumped in a king george's county landfill according to the "washington post." the practices happened between 2003 and 2008 at the port mortuary in dover. families were often not notified. body parts were misplaced. in one case, the arm of a marine was sawed-off in order for his body to fit into his

uniform. >> i went through the facility, every single rack, we couldn't find it. >> we asked them why they wouldn't go to the family and let them know what happened. their response was very clear. they couldn't be trusted. they might go to the press. >> reporter: coming up in the next half hour, we'll hear more from these whistle-blowers who worked there. they were mortuary workers. we'll find out what happened to them and what they're promising in the future. mike, andrea? >> surae, do we know what kind of disciplinary action can take place so it doesn't happen again? >> the special council says there was some disciplinary action but it was insufficient. in some cases, there were three people who were disciplined but they were not fired but they were moved about in different positions and the special council saying that's not enough. we'll hear more in the next half hour. >> thanks, surae in arlington,

virginia. the families of nationals catcher ramos is waiting for more information on him. he was kidnapped last night. police in venezuela say four men took him at gunpoint. he played his first full season in the big leagues this last year. he's considered one of the team's up and comers. this is not the first time a major leaguer or one of their relatives has been kidnapped in venezuela. and money is usually the motive. >> now to the penn state child sex abuse scandal. the board of trustees announced the fate of its president and football coach late last night. >> effective immediately, dr. spanier is no longer president of the university. in addition, joe paterno is no longer the head football coach effective immediately. >> this after coach paterno announced yesterday he would retire at the end of the season. but the trustees decided he needed to go now. he's among those accused of not alerting law enforcement about

child sex abuse allegations. again, former defensive coordinator jerry sandusky. two other administrators who are charged criminally for not reporting the allegations have already resigned. texas governor rick perry had planned, publicly said so to back away from the upcoming presidential debates for the republican party. this morning, he might be wishing he skipped the one hosted by cnbc. he said if he was electened, he would do away with three federal agencies. >> i would do away with education, the -- >> commerce. and let's see. i can't. the third one, i can't. sorry. oops. by the way, that was the department of energy i was reaching for. >> tried to make fun of it. his poor debate performances have contributed to his slide since he got into the race as a front-runner, you may remember. herman cain again flatly denies sexual harassment allegations against him and said they

haven't hurt his campaign. the new "usa today" poll has cain and former massachusetts governor mitt romney tied at 21% apiece. time for the latest "your money" report of the morning. >> jessica doyle is here with the headlines once again. good morning, jess. >> worst sell-off in nearly two months yesterday! it was pretty ugly. so far today, it has been pretty tough as well. we've seen more red arrows in european and asian trading. hang seng down 5% overnight. again, blame europe's debt crisis. now plunging wall street into negative territory for the year. the dow starts this morning at 11,780. it closed down 389 points. that's a loss of almost 3%. the nasdaq dropped by 105 points. almost 4% drop and the s&p 500 fell by 46 points. about 3.5%. the world has shifted its

focus from greece to italy after the country's interest rates spiked yesterday on signs that the growing debt crisis there. italy has debts equal to about 120% of its overall economy. it is also the third largest economy in the euro zone. if italy were to go belly up, it could have a domino effect on other troubled countries including spain and portugal. it looks like there is a way for the u.s. postal service to keep saturday deliveries at least for now. a senate panel passed a bipartisan deal to save the mail service. the deal would buy out some employees, cutworker compensation benefits for some retirees and it would mean change saturday mail service for two more years. the postal service lost as much as $10 billion in fiscal 2011 and could face annual losses up to $20 billion by 2020. really tough situation. >> it seems like with all of the instant mail services that they could get into that business and make money that way, too but they're only slowly incrementally going that way. >> one of the problems with the

mastermind of the attack on the u.s.s. cole was arraigned yesterday before a military tribunal in guantanamo bay. abdel did not enter a plea. 17 sailors died in the october 2007 bombing. the tribunal set a trial date of november 2012. the cartoonist who created family circus has died. bill keane was 89 years old, suffering from congestive heart failure. he started drawing the popular strip back in 1960. in recent years, one of his sons has taken over the drawing duties. we're awaiting damage reports from alaska as one of the most powerful storms to hit there in decades starts to move out this morning. the system is dumping snow inland and could send an eight- foot surge of water into coastal communities. some people have evacuated to higher ground. not too shabby around here weatherwise recently. things will take a little bit of a turn for the worst. we have a little to endure. but the nice weekend a right around the corner. howard has the scoop at 5:15.

anne arundel up into howard county and baltimore, points east across the eastern shore now into the northern neck. carroll county is not included in this. however, visibilities there have been quite dense up in westminster. look at bwi, a 16th of a mile and all of the quarter mile visibilities in calvert, st. mary's. andrews down to 3/4. national is at 6 miles. d.c. and points west, no fog problems this morning but the clouds have thickened up. we're talking about mostly cloudy skies with the patchy dense fog east at the bus stop this morning. temps in the mid-40s to low 50s. not as cold as it has been. sunrise at 6:45. today we're looking at showers midday. highs only around 55 degrees. you'll notice a couple of showers coming through western maryland. that's it at the moment. so, fairly quiet morning with the exception of that patchy dense fog off to the east with the dense fog advisory. your temperatures, well, they're down in the 40s in many areas, low 50s. rockville at 51. it is 46 in reston, sterling.

47 with the fog, andrews is 46. it is 45 at fort belvoir. that's one of our cooler readings. national, cloudy skies. 48 with a dew point of 48. so, the humidity 100%. and a northeast wind at 5. that high humidity, no surprise we've got fog with the clouds actually coming in overhead. help to limit the fog. and the winds as well. the front is coming through western maryland now. we'll watch it as it comes through a little bit later during the middle of the day today. this will continue to move off toward the east with some showers. behind it, the winds really kick up out of the northwest. we'll see clearing skies and colder temperatures moving in tonight, especially tomorrow it will be chilly. much better by your weekend. today, 55 degrees with the showers turning cold in the afternoon. 30s tonight. it will be brisk with a northwest wind 10 to 15. a blustery veterans day. 50 degrees. milder saturday. near 60. look at sunday and monday, mid- 60s. maybe a couple of showers by tuesday in the upper 60s.

of his family's home. he was in his native country of venezuela playing winter ball. a spokeswoman for that winter league team says four men took the 24-year-old at gunpoint. kidnappings are not uncommon in venezuela and the motive is usually money. police in riot gear had to move into the streets in state college, pennsylvania overnight where thousands of students protested last night's firing of football coach joe paterno. the board of trustees dismissed the 84-year-old paterno and the school's president, graham spanier, effective immediately over their handling of the child sex abuse allegations against former defensive coordinator of the football team, jerry sandusky. >> those who sacrifice their lives fighting for this country. now, an investigation into the mishandling of the remains of u.s. troops killed in battle. remains are processed at the dover air force base mortuary. 9news now reporter surae chinn is live at the air force memorial with more.

surae? >> andrea, this is just unimaginable treatment of our service men and women who laid down their lives for our country. you would think that they would treat them with respect and dignity but that was just not the case. in fact, treated like a piece of trash instead. well, the special council said -- sent a letter to the president, concluded there was gross negligence. mismanagement and dishonesty. the culture, commonplace for body parts to be lost or mishandled, remains were cremated and dumped in a king george county landfill. there were five instances where fetal remains from shipped to dover inside plastic pails and put in cardboard boxes. when several of these mortuary workers blew the whistle, they were fired. those disciplinary actions have since been rescinded. one of the whistle-blowers says he's seeing to it the practices of 2003 to 2008 are no more.

>> i can guarantee the families that their loved ones are being treated with honor, dignity and respect bar none. and if we see that they're not, we have all jeopardized our careers. our jobs. and insure that that perhaps. >> well, now the practice is to cremate the unidentified remains, put them in urns and bury them at sea. andrea and sneak. >> surae chinn reporting live from in front of the air force memorial. today, the specialized team of engineers who rappeled down the washington monument will return there. a national park service spokesman says the engineers will set up ropes and equipment at the top of the monument then they will fill cracks and missing pieces, shaken loose in the august earthquake with temporary sealant. the weatherization work on the monument will begin monday and it is expected to last about five days. the vote count is changing in a pivotal virginia state senate race. bryce reeves now leads

lighter. you can understand why some of the fog particularly dense. one storm system signature off the california coast. showers in south texas going to the gulf. up toward us, actually, this front which is coming through us, trailing off this system coming through the great lakes with rain and snow. it has been cold enough for some moderate snow in spots. today, the front is what we're watching. it is going to have to come through here. that will happen in the middle of the day. a weak area of high pressure that will help enhance a few showmplets as the timing getting to the middle of the afternoon, we'll kick the showers out of here. tonight, we clear out. chilly air moves in. with a pretty brisk wind out of the northwest, 10 to 15. that wind will be with us on friday as well. so, tomorrow is going to be a little slap in the face with the cold and the wind. 55 today. a few showers. tonight, we're in the 30s. wind chill is in the 20s. near 50 for friday. partly to mostly sunny. your weekend looks better. saturday, upper 50s. sunday, low to mid 60s with

in the developed world. sara brown is the ceo of the national campaign to prevent teen and unplanned pregnancies and dylan tomlin is a former national campaign youth leadership team member and we welcome both of you this morning. thank you for being with us. sara, you say one in ten women between the ages of 20 and 29 have an unplanned pregnancy. i introduce you as the national campaign to prevent teen and unplanned pregnancies but this new campaign is not directed at teenagers. >> that's right. teens are very important in our group and many others have done a lot on teen pregnancies. but this is in addition. these are their older sisters. these are young women in their 20s, largely unmarried, who are having a lot of problems right now in managing pregnancy. there are over a million pregnancies a year to unmarried women in their 20s. the women themselves say they weren't planning, they weren't intending, too soon, not what they wanted. it is a very serious problem. no one recognizes it. >> why do you think it is such

a problem that women in this age group, educated women, working women, may not be getting the message? >> even if they had good sex education and they had it years ago, they may not have paid as much attention as we think they do. life is full, busy, to use birth control carefully every time takes real focus and concentration. for some young women, it is expensive as well. somehow in the great sweep of young adulthood, things happen. >> we want to give you an idea of what the ads look like. so, they are very much in your face. we want you to be aware of that. ♪ >> dylan, are you in that age group, you've worked with the organization before. seeing the ads that we're showing on the air right now, what impact do you think it will make in that age group? will they see it and see something beyond the humor? >> i think they're easy to

relate to. the target audience of the 20 something-year-olds, it is something they'll be able to see and it makes sense to them. it is what we're used to seeing. our generation often sees things like that. it is not considered too in your face for the age group it is targeted toward so i think it will impact the 20 something-year-olds. it is funny enough that it is not -- it creates -- >> a buzz. >> yeah. >> the information that's already out there for that group, is it just boring or why don't young people pick up the information that's already there? >> that's a good question. >> what do you think? >> well, actually, a lot of the information is kind of boring or sometimes even scary. this whole subject of preventing pregnancy or postponing it is said with hushed voices. a lot of young people we know from research are actually afraid of a lot of the best methods of birth control. they don't know a lot. >> what extra help are you
