monika samtani, we've got fog and volume causing more problems. >> growing volume and now an accident on the beltway as well. good morning, everybody. the fog has been a factor this morning. now, we have an accident on the beltway. northbound side of 495, the outer loop. north of route 50. watch out for it. the right lane blocked. so, if you're coming off route 50, stay to the left to get around that accident. let's take you to a live picture of the beltway here at georgia avenue. typical slowdown forming at 6:00 in the morning on the outer loop leaving 95 headed toward georgia. once you're beyond this, you will be ok into bethesda. let's go back over to the maps. northbound side of i-95 that you will have to be careful there. northbound 95, there is an accident in the left lane. it is slowing things down coming up from dale city. up to the accident scene. once you're beyond that, you're ok from the occoquan river into springfield and on to 395. more on both of those accidents coming up at 6:14. back to you guys. thanks, monika. the penn state campus turned into somewhat of a violent mob

last night. students reacting to the news that football coach joe paterno was fired. >> the university also got rid of its president days after the arrest of a former assistant coach. he's accused of sexually assaulting boys over several years. greg black has the latest from penn state. >> police use pepper spray on some penn state fans who took the streets after learning legendary coach joe paterno has been fired. the police responded after the crowd tore down lampposts and tipped over a news van. earlier, the fans expressed their support for paterno. >> we are penn state! >> they're going after the wrong guy. nothing's been proven wrong. joe, if anyone, joe is legally cleared so if anyone did right, it is joe. >> absolute stunned.

i don't understand how they could do this to penn state in general. joe has been here so long. let him play his last game. it is that simple. everyone here is for that right now. >> at a late night news conference, penn state's board of trustees announced it was firing paterno and university president graham spanier. >> these decisions were made after careful deliberations. and in the best interests of the university as a whole. >> reporter: former assistant coach jerry sandusky is accused of sexually abusing eight boys from 1994 to 2009. some say the leadership should have done more after paterno learned of an incident in 2002. sandusky inappropriately touched a man when he was 12 years ode. >> his contact with me was usually limited to a hand on the thigh in a car ride. i got to go to a lot of places with jerry, football games,

standing on the sideline for football games, family picnics. it never veered into anything overtly sexual but certainly enough to make me uncomfortable. >> sandusky is out on $100,000 bail. i'm greg black for 9news now. after the trustees decision came down, coach paterno released a statement. he said he's disappointed with the decision but accepts it. he also thanks supporters who gathered outside his home. mike? >> now to another story that has a lot of people angry. the bodies of americans killed at war dumped like every day garbage in a landfill. their bodies were supposed to be treated with respect at the mortuary at dover air force base in delaware. instead, some of them wound up in a landfill in king george's county. surae chinn is live at the air force memorial in arlington. how long did this go on, surae? >> it happened during a span of five years between 2003 to 2008 and it could have gone on for

much longer had it not been for three whistle-blowers. they were mortuary workers in dover who shed some light on the disturbing facts and the disturbing finds that the u.s. air force knew about it the entire time. well, the office of special council confirms body parts of active service members killed in action were lost by the port mortuary. they were cremated, incinerated then dumped in a king george landfill according to "the washington post" and families were often not notified. body parts were misplaced. in one case, the arm of a marine was sawed-off in order for his body to fit in the casket and into his uniform. >> i went through the entire facility, every single rack. i couldn't find it. >> we asked them more than once, why they wouldn't go to the families and let them know what had happened. their response was very clear. they couldn't be trusted. they might go to the press. >> reporter: so far, the air

force has only acted on three supervisors, disciplining them, not firing them but just moving them to different positions within that dover mortuary. mike? >> surae chinn live at the air force memorial in arlington. obviously a lot more going to happen with this story. well, a much happier occasion for the u.s. marine corps today. here's a live look at iwo jima memorial in rosslyn. today marks the marine's 236th birthday. there will be a wreath laying ceremony this morning at the memorial. >> happy birthday to the corps. a 20-year-old charged in the car crash which killed three of his friends is due in court today. 20-year-old kevin coffey was behind the wheel of his car last may. prosecutors say he was drinking alcohol just before the crash in olney, maryland. he went off the road, hit two trees and slammed into a telephone pole. three people died including an 18-year-old girl just days away from her high school graduation. police also say coffey ran away from the crash scene before being captured. records show d.c. police

arrested more than 3400 drivers for expired tags or unregistered cars. most people arrested are not listed as having spent time behind bars. in most cases, the driver got a citation or agreed to pay a fine. police in the district had the authority to arrest drivers with the expired tag. the d.c. council passed legislation to end that practice last month. jessica doyle is here with another "your money" report. >> and more bad news when it comes to the housing market. >> well, foreclosures are picking up. we saw them slow down last year in the middle of that foreclosure processing mess. they're definitely picking up again. more homes entered the foreclosure process in october. up 10% from september. at last count, about one in five of all american homes has a mortgage that is under water. help for homeowners facing foreclosure is on the way. mortgage giant fannie mae has opened a help center in prince george's county. the capital area mortgage help center will provide free education and one on one

counseling services to homeowners who need assistance. and it is open to anyone in the entire region. we're talking maryland, virginia and the district. the office is located in the triangle center at 6401 triangle drive in greenbelt, maryland. to critics, it was shaping up to be the tax that stole christmas. facing down a lot of vocal opposition, the white house has reversed itself on support for christmas tree fee. the 15 cent fee for each tree sold would have gone to pay for a promotional program. the national christmas tree association asked the government to approve the fee for a campaign that would have fought competition from the artificial tree business. very quick reversal on this. >> they saw the light. through the trees. thanks, jess. >> sure. it is 6:07. >> howard says we could see some showers across the region later today. your weather first coming up right here on 9news now. stay with us! we're back at 6:10. alaska is dealing with one of the worst storms in that state's history. snow, strong tides and hurricane-force winds. the storm will leave plenty of damage behind as well. >> they're used to severe weather. >> gusts over 100 miles per hour reported. some waves 40 feet plus. if you're a fan of deadliest catch, probably going to see some of that later in the season. boats were out in this.

>> 100 plus, that's like category two hurricane? >> right. >> throw a little snow in there. >> if there is a positive that, part of the world, it is so sparsely populated, there is not much up in western alaska. except for ice and animals. and woods. >> ok. let's talk about our problems this morning. we've got some dense fog. couple of school delays for you. queen anne county, 90 minutes. dorchester county, you guys are two hours late. talbot, they make their announcement. dense fog advisory pretty close now into howard county, prince george's county, charles, calvert, st. mary's, anne arundel and points east. south through the northern neck until 9:00 this morning. as we take a look at the visibilities, you'll see why. a lot of the visibilities, quarter mile or less. bwi down to 1/16th of a mile. fog is in parts of montgomery and howard. half-mile from gaithersburg up

toward westminster. carroll county is not in the advisory. but treated as one just in case. with dense fog like that, keep the lights on the low beams and give yourself some extra time. tappahannock, lot of areas in eastern virginia from richmond down to norfolk as well. we're watching the fog this morning. the bus stop forecast has the fog around in spots. otherwise, mostly cloudy skies. temps running in the 40s and 50s. middle of the day, a decent chance to see showers out here with temperatures topping off about 55. dropping later this afternoon. winds will also pick up out of the northwest at 10 to 15 miles per hour. here are the showers here through williamsport back down almost to around breezewood in pennsylvania. but not too much going on in maryland or virginia at this hour. i do think though later today, we'll see some action by midday, if not later this morning, actually. into the 40s, mid 40s in reston and leesburg at 46. it is 50 degrees in bethesda and laurel. columbia is 51. alexandria out to andrews air force base where the fog is,

spokeswoman for a team in venezuela. the baseball league he's playing in over the winter. ramos was playing winter ball there. >> he was reportedly taken from his home wednesday by four men with guns. no word on why he was taken or if he's all right. the nationals have not confirmed the story. last year, ramos hit .267 with 15 home runs for washington. the nash and the players union are giving up just yet on a labor deal. commissioner david stern said a deadline of 5:00 p.m. last night, it passed but both sides kept talking. they plan to meet once again today. the lockout began back on july 1st and has cost the league a month worth of games so far. well, there appears to be another team willing to take a chance on albert haynesworth. good luck, guys. here at the 11th street bridge, an accident. second one on the freeway right near south capital street and the third street tunnel. two separate accidents in this area alone. let's take you to a live picture of 66. delays out in manassas. again, basically off and on from centreville to the beltway. i want to let you know an accident out west near front royal, an overturned vehicle on route 55 at high knob road. you will be diverted through that area. so, be aware of that in front royal. coming up in my next report, another look around the area at 6:45. mike and andrea? >> thanks, monika. tomorrow is veterans day, a day to honor those who served our country. that's apparently not what has been going on at dover air force base for those who paid the ultimate price. >> the bodies of some soldiers, some soldier's body parts killed in the war were dumped into a landfill. they were taken from dover delaware to that landfill in king george county, virginia. surae chinn is following the story from arlington, virginia. surae, did the families of the fallen have any idea this was

happening? >> reporter: andre yark the families didn't know what was happening until recently. it is appalling. as we do approach veterans day to honor our servicemen and women who lay down their lives for our country, these families expected their loved ones would be treated with dignity and respect, not like a piece of trash. the office of special council sent a letter to the president concluded there was gross mismanagement, negligence and dishonesty at the port mortuary at dover air force base. it was commonplace for body parts to be lost or mishandled. remains from cremated and dumped in a kring george county landfill. there were five instances where fetal remains of military families were shipped to dover inside plastic pails and put in cardboard boxes. when several of the mortuary workers blew the whistle, they were fired. but their disciplinary actions have been rescinded. one of the whistle-blowers say he's seeing to it the practices of 2003 to 2008 don't happen

again. >> i can guarantee the families that their loved ones are being treated with honor, dignity and respect bar none. and if we see that they're not, we have all jeopardized our careers, our jobs, to ensure that that happens. >> reporter: well, the practices now is to cremate the remains and bury them at sea. the special council says not enough has been done to have disciplinary action. there have only been three supervisors who have been removed of their position but just changed jobs. within the dover military air force base. and leon panetta has said he has kept the door open for more disciplinary actions in the future. we'll see what happens. andrea? >> all right, surae chinn reporting live at the air force memorial in arlington, virginia. traveling through maryland, you'll notice flags across the state will be at half staff today. it is in honor of lieutenant colonel david cabrera who lived in olney, maryland and worked

at the university of health services in bethesda. colonel cabrera was one of four americans killed by a rodeside bomb on october 29th. police in riot gear squared off against hundreds of high rioting penn state students following the firing of joe paterno. the crowd flipped over a television news van, threw rocks at the media and ripped down light poles. paterno and the school's president were fired last night following the arrest of former assistant football coach jerry sandusky on child sex abuse charges. several people also held a quiet vigil outside paterno's home to show their support. many feel the coach's firing was unjust. >> pretty emotional. yeah. seemed unnecessary and disrespectful to us. >> the crowd finally left downtown state college around 2:00 this morning. saturday's final home game of the season will be against nebraska. it will mark the first time paterno was coaching the team

46 years ago. the fate over which party will control the virginia state senate rests on a recount. that's because the race in the 17th district is just too close to call. now, we just checked the state board of elections web site. republican challenger bryce reeves is in the lead with 224 more votes than democratic incumbent ed houck. recount will be held november 28th at the earliest. houck isn't throwing in the towel just yet. >> we just want to make sure that every vote is fairly and accurately counted. we're confident that senator houck will ultimately prevail. if republicans win the 17th district, it will be a 20/20 split in the virginia state senate. lieutenant-governor bill bolling, a republican would cast the tie-baking vote. the washington humidity is getting patchwork done for the winter. the same engineers who rappeled down the humidity and found cracks will be back there this morning. they're planning to fill the cracks with some temporary

more appropriate. let's talk about the fog this morning. that's a big problem. especially east of town. we're seeing some of the fog in town and south as well. here's a look at the dense fog advisory until 9:00 a.m. covering areas in southern maryland. the eastern shore down in the northern neck. howard county also west of 95. we've got fog problems. the actual visibilities themselves down to a quarter mile at annapolis. quarter mile in fredericksburg. this is creeping up the river. quantico is down to one half. la plata and andrews bouncing up and down a little bit. southern maryland, you're socked in. many school delays on the eastern shore. annapolis at a quarter mile and up to gaithers burr and westminster, visibility is a half-mile or less. west of that, we're much better. bus stop forecast, partly to mostly cloudy with the patchy, dense fog. 44 to 52. sunrise coming up at 6:45. we're look at a day where i don't think we'll see a lot of sunshine. partly to mostly cloudy. we'll have a few showers around. temperatures getting to maybe

55 before dropping off this afternoon on the heels of brisk northwesterly winds. this evening, we start to see some clearing by 8:00. 47 degrees. under partly cloudy skies. with the winds out of the northwest, wind chills by tomorrow morning could be in the 20s. actual temps down in the 30s. look at the showers this morning, thin line through pennsylvania. however, the front still to come through, more showers in western north carolina. this stuff will come here later on. i don't think it will be anything terribly heavy but the shower threat will be there. temps running in the upper 40s in easton and here in washington, 50 in gaithersburg. 50s in winchester and luray. low to mid-50s ahead of the front. 48. winds east-northeast at reagan national with a dew point. humidity at 100%. lighter winds in many areas. the front is going to be dragged through here later today. thanks to this storm system spinning in the great lakes. you can see the circulation into canada. behind it, the air will get colder. will dry out. tomorrow, a very chilly day.

thankfully, looks like we'll moderate some by the weekend. today, 55. a few showers. tonight down in the 30s. a blustery veterans day. around 50 tomorrow for a high. then saturday, we recover to 59. sunday, even better. low to mid-60s. still in the 60s for monday and tuesday. may see a few showers by then. monika stepping in with timesaver traffic. >> the biggest hot spot right now, trouble spot is the northbound side of 295, the earlier accident right here at the 11th street bridge was cleared. there is a second accident near capital street. you've got delays forming all the way across on to the freeway because of the accident. stay to the left to get around that. fog has been an this issue morning. let's first take a look at the northbound side of i-95 here in newington. i've been watching the cameras, the fog settling in here. it will be a little slow for you as you head into newington to springfield. let's take a look at the beltway in college park. it will be the fog that is going to slow you down

basically from 95 headed over to georgia avenue. by the way, 270 right now, off and on delays as you leave father hurley boulevard down to the point where the lanes divide. speak of maryland roads, i have a commuter alert. we're getting a look at the completed inner county connector. reporters were given a tour of the toll road yesterday. the link from georgia avenue to interstate 95 opens tuesday, november 22nd, the highway has two goals to. take east-west traffic off local roads and to cut down on travel times across maryland. the time savings will be very significant, cutting the travel time, for example, from gaithersburg to bwi airport from 71 minutes to 37 minutes. >> so, remember you need to have an ez pass to drive the icc or you'll be getting a bail in the mail along with a surcharge. there will be a 13-day free trial period. the full tolling begins on december 5th. i'm kind of on the fence about this. it will connect you for 18 miles north of the beltway from 270 to 95.
