former head coach joe paterno won't be there. he was fired wednesday night. and neither will assistant coach mike mcqueary. the university said multiple threats have been made against the receivers coach. mcqueary is the same graduate assistant who in 2002 told then head coach paterno he had witnessed former coach jerry sandusky raping a young boy in the locker room shower. while paterno did report the incident to university officials, neither man ever alerted police. >> i take this job with very mixed emotions. >> thursday penn state formally introduced tom bradley as interim head coach. the legend he replaced wasn't far from his thoughts. >> coach paterno has meant more to me than anybody except my father. and i don't want to get emotional and start talking about that. >> paterno remained out of the public eye thursday, staying inside his home, visiting with former assistants. nbc news reports he had hired a prominent prominent washington

criminal defense attorney. a family spokesman denied that report. the man at the heart of the scandal, jerry sandusky, has denied any wrongdoing. he retired in 1999, but his retirement package included access to the football facility. while school officials were made aware of alleged assaults dating back to 2000, the former coach was seen working out on campus as recently as last week. >> i was mortified. just sick to my stomach. >> patty noble worked along syme sandusky for a decade at second mile, the charity he founded for at-risk kids. the indictment against him revealed all of his alleged victims at the foundation. she along with other volunteers feels duped. >> they all came back for the one reason, to help jerry sandusky, the second mile and the at-risk children. and unfortunately, we were feeding his habit. >> authorities know of nine alleged victims but are looking for more.

texas officials are now involved. they are investigating whether any crimes were committed when penn state went to the alamo bowl in 1999. sandusky's last game with the team. a deadly shooting outside the anti-wall street demonstrations in oakland, california, does not appear to be related to the protests. a man was fatally shot last night. police say a fight between two groups of men broke out near the protesters. a shot was fired into the crowd, killing the victim. so far there are no suspects. in burlington, vermont, an anti-wall street protester committed suicide. police say a 35-year-old military veteran shot himself at the occupy wall street encampment thursday. they say the man had mental health issues. good news for veterans on this veterans day. the senate passed a bill to help unemployed vets. the measure passed 95-0 yesterday. the deal would award tax credits to companies that hire disabled vets who have been out of work for at least six months. the house is expected to approve the bill next week.

now to the race for the republican presidential nomination. where it is getting close. a just-released cbs news poll of republican primary voters conducted this week shows herman cain in the top spot with 18%. but a surging newt gingrich is now tied with mitt romney at 15%. rick perry is in fourth. next, the candidates will square off in a debate tomorrow night in south carolina. susan mcginnis is in washington with more on that. good morning, susan. >> reporter: hi, good morning, betty. these latest difficulties for herman cain and rick perry could end up leaving fewer alternatives for voters looking for an alternative to mitt romney. still these two for now are doing all they can to stay in the race. rick perry hit the "late show with david letterman" to try to laugh off his latest debate slip-up. >> hey, listen, you try concentrating with mitt romney smiling at you. that is one handsome dude. >> reporter: last night he gave the top ten rick perry excuses,

reasons he drew a blank wednesday trying to name the three federal agencies he would get rid of as president. >> commerce, education and the, uh, what's the third one there? let's see. >> reporter: the texas governor immediately jumped into damage control, canceling his campaign schedule thursday to appear on eight tv programs. >> number two. >> i wanted to help take the heat off my buddy, herman cain. >> reporter: perry will get another chance to redeem himself tomorrow when cbs hosts the debate in south carolina. but he's not the only gop hopeful trying to bounce back. >> it didn't kill me or slow us down one bit. >> reporter: in michigan, hundreds of supporters cheered on herman cain despite his sexual harassment scandal. michele bachmann's stop in south carolina didn't go as smoothly. dozens of occupy wall street protesters crashed her foreign policy speech. the minnesota congresswoman had to leave the stage before demonstrators marched out and

water supplies. that could postpone a decision until after the 2012 election. in a move perceived to counter iran's ongoing nuclear program, the u.s. is expected to announce the sale of advanced weapons to the united arab emirates. the uae is a key persian gulf ally. the proposed sale would include precision-guided bombs and air-to-surface missiles. so-called bunker-busting bombs would greatly increase the uae's ability to hit the kind of targets where iran is believed to be developing nuclear weapons. in turkey, surveillance video from the city of van showed the earthquake hitting on wednesday. look at this. a major hotel falls apart, and people are seen fleeing into the streets. at least 13 people were killed. survivors are still being pulled from the rubble, and thousands are living in makeshift camps. coming up on "the morning news," the oscars pick a new host after eddie murphy bails. plus, facebook may finally

"the wall street journal" reports the social networking giant has agreed to make some

more on what's going on around town at 4:39. mike and jessica? >> thanks, monika. we begin with the latest developments in the penn state university child sex scandal. this involves an assistant football coach who will not be at saturday's game versus nebraska. >> assistant coach scott mccleary will not coach for the nittany lions. he's now the wide receiver's coach. back in 2002, mcqueary was the graduate assistant who testified he saw former defensive coordinator jerry sandusky in the shower with a 10-year-old boy. the school says he's received multiple threats and it would be in his best interest if he did not attend the game. and the scandal could be extended to texas. the san antonio police department is looking into the possibility something may have happened during penn state's trip to the alamo bowl back in 1999. there have been repeated calls for calm to return to the campus. everyday we find out something new about the case. it seems like a petrie dish for lawsuits coming down the pike. we expect to see them for years

according to legal experts. for joe paterno and the university, civil suits seem to be probable. >> gary nurenberg has more on the civil and criminal cases. >> the allegations against sandusky are so vile, it has this week, been maine mainly a story of moral outrage the university didn't do enough to stop him. it hasn't been about money... yet. >> they let him continue to abuse and rape these children for years. i believe both the university and mr. paterno face tremendous liability in this situation. >> civil lawyers can make a simple case on behalf of the abused children against the university and its employees. >> they all had a duty to protect those children. i believe that they will all be named as defendants in lawsuits and that they'll face civil liability. >> expect to see that in the court for years. but criminal liability
