yes, venezuelaen police are working on a couple of leads this morning, one of which is finding the get away car yesterday. they have sketches of captors but no sign or wilson ramos. nationals catcher wilson ramos was kidnapped in his hometown on wednesday. and an upand comer for the team was in his homeland playing in the winter league. he was just in his family's front yard in st. inez when an suv pulled up and four gunmen abducted him, kidnapping for ransom is not uncommon in venezuela but it is a first of a major league player. >> ramos made $415,000 last year. major league perspective, that's not a lot. but for a kidnapper, this is a guy with a lot of money. >> well, police say that ramos is still alive but again, no sign of him this morning. and no contact with these

captors. no ransom note. no demands at this point. so, we're waiting to hear and fans and family are hoping for the best. mike, jessica? >> surae, any other response from the nationals or major league baseball on this? >> that's right. the nationals and the major league baseball have both said that they are thinking about ramos and his family but they have been restricted to say anything more. of course, that's coming from the police and they don't want to hinder any of the investigation or affect it in any way but yes, those two, the nationals and the major league baseball are working together with venezuelan police to hopefully find ramos alive. back to you. >> thanks, surae live in southeast washington near nationals park this morning. the lawyer for the prime suspect in the disappearance of robyn gardner, the woman from frederick, the lawyers quit. michael lopez was representing gary giordano in aruba. now jose baez who were casey anthony's lawyers have taken

over the case. giordano insists he's innocent. he's from gaithersburg and has been in jail in aruba for months now. he claims robyn gardner, his travel companion was swept out to sea while the two were snorkeling. police, however, think he killed her. giordano is due back in court at the end of the month. now to the penn state sex scandal and another football coach who will not be at tomorrow's game against nebraska. the school assisted assistant coach scott mcqueary has received death threats and will not be at the stadium. mcqueary testified he saw former defensive coordinator jerry sandusky in the shower with a 10-year-old boy and reported that to joe paterno and now the san antonio police department is looking into whether sandusky abused a boy he had on a penn state trip to the alamo bowl in 1999. meanwhile, pennsylvania governor tom corbett is appealing for calm at state

this morning in overseas trading. traders have been breathing a sigh of relief on signs of progress in europe's debt crisis and an unexpected drop in unemployment claims. those factors have been pushing wall street higher. checking the numbers for you, the dow starts this morning from 11,893. it added 112 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq up by 3 and a half points and the s&p 500 was better by 10. the white house now says it will comply with the republican subpoena investigating the solyndra loan guarantee. the california solar panel company was the first to receive a federal loan under the 2009 stimulus law. however, it declared bankruptcy in september, laid off its 1100 workers and left taxpayers on the hook for more than a half a billion dollars. last week, republican-led house committee subpoenaed the white house for all internal documents relating to solyndra. the obama administration calls the move politically motivated.

morning, a judge in norfolk will soon rule on whether or not justin wolf should be released from prison. this summer, judge raymond jackson overturned wolf's conviction in the murder of daniel in manassas. his attorneys say he should be released while the virginia attorney general's appeals the rules. police are investigating a shooting death at the site of the occupied protest. the protestors say they believe the shooting was over drugs and not at all related to their demonstration but the city's mayor is calling on occupy campers to leave voluntarily and might try to force them out. the state department is putting a hold on that controversial canadian oil pipeline project. after massive public protests, u.s. officials want the transcanada company to look for alternative routes for the pipeline. the current would run through environmentally sensitive aquifer in nebraska. >> it is chilly outside this veterans day but there is warmer weather on the way. howard has the details next at

months ago. an assistant coach, a key witness in the penn state scandal will not be on the sidelines. scott mcqueary has received death threats. he saw sexual act between former defensive coordinator jerry sandusky and a 10-year- old boy in the shower and reported it to joe paterno. this morning, the search is intensifying for washington nationals catcher wilson ramos. the 24-year-old was kidnapped at gunpoint from his family's home in venezuela. authorities believe he is alive but so far, there has been no ransom demand. 9news now reporter surae chinn is live at nationals park with more on what the organization is doing and comments from major league baseball. good morning, surae. >> reporter: good morning to you, mike. yes, the off-season for the nationals and that's why ramos was in his native country of venezuela, playing in the winter league. no, there has not been any contact with the captors, no ransom note, nothing of that

sort. but venezuelan police say that he is alive. how they know that, it is unclear but the government there has brought in their top investigators for an all-out manhunt for ramos. for the nationals, ramos was a rising star, an upand comer for the team. he was kidnapped in front of his home by gunpoint by four captors. fans and family are keeping vigil in venezuela where fans are very proud of the players and adore them. baseball is the number one sport in that country. at nationals park, fans here have heavy hearts for number three. >> i walk by national stadium every day and this morning, when i walk through it, i was saying a prayer for him. >> this is the first time that something like this happened. we have, in the past, it is important. >> kidnappings for ransom are on the rise in venezuela. it is not uncommon.

there were 618 kidnappings in 2009 but the first of its kind for the major league baseball player. of course, no other major league baseball player that we know of has ever been kidnapped. several clues though, they have found the get away car and there are sketches, too, out of the -- sketches of two out of the four captors. >> thank you, surae chinn. prosecutors say former prince george's county councilwoman leslie johnson deserves at least a year in prison. johnson pled guilty to destroying evidence in the corruption probe of her husband, the former county executive jack johnson. in court documents filed this week, prosecutors call leslie johnson part of a core you want culture. for example, they cite a phone call in which mrs. jon says a certain developer will certainly give her political donation because he knows she will help him. her sentencing is scheduled for next month. more opposition to maryland's recently-approved

redistricting plan. nine people filed a federal lawsuit against it on thursday. the group represented by the fannie lou hammer political action committee says this new map dilutes minority voting strength. this is the second lawsuit filed against the plan in the past two weeks. tomorrow, the national cathedral will hold its first public worship service since the august 23rd earthquake hit the d.c. area. visitors will be able to get a close-up look at some of the damage. the cathedral is putting the finishing touches on an exhibit that documents the damage and the repair process. stone work fell off the cathedral's towers and parts of the building were severely cracked after the earthquake. it is 5:34. i'm watching your money. talk about signs of life for the local housing market! last month turned out to be a pretty good one to sell real estate. contract activity in the region was up almost 19% higher than the five-year october average. over 4100 contracts were written last month but the median sales price was down 6% from this time last year.

real estate tracker mrif which crunched the numbers is blaming some of the drop in a change in mortgage lending laws. mortgage limits for larger mortgages, the jumbo loans, those limits have been lowered and that impacted the amount of money the borrowers can boro. a new discount grocery store opens in northeast washington. it is aldi's first store in the district. the store is located at 901, 17th street in ward five. aldi held a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening preview yesterday. the company says it is looking forward to providing the community with "fresh and affordable grocery options." >> this veterans day marks the end of a holiday tradition. the annual salvation army red kettle christmas campaign. >> these kettles are going out across our region to collect money for all of the regions. if they're in arlington, if they're in alexandria, that's where the money stays. that's the cool part of it. we're helping our own communities which is great. >> this year's push will go for 39 days through christmas eve.

the salvation army hopes to raise $176 million in the washington area. last year, about 28,000 people received assistance from the salvation army during the holidays and nearly half of those recipients were children. some new fund-raising efforts are underway to help military families this holiday. we'll tell you how you can participate. >> plus, we'll take a look at a few of the new movies you can catch in theatres this weekend.

this brisk friday morning, happy veterans day. thanks to those of you who serve and have served. we have temperatures starting in the 30s and low 40s this morning. we're look at temperatures which won't be moving much today and a wind, too, out of the west. rather chilly day. you'll need the jackets, the gloves, maybe the earmuffs. by lunchtime, indoors today. 49 degrees. going to feel closer to 40 in manassas, 50. upper 40s to low 50s for highs this afternoon. maybe even a few snow showers in the higher elevations. out in western maryland. mike, over to you.
