happy veterans day. thank you for joining us. i'm j.c. hayward. it was blustery at the world war ii memorial this morning. hundreds gathered to honor our military servicemen and women. survey chinn reports -- surae chinn reports there was a special recognition for african americans who served in the 1940s. ♪ >> we're just extremely proud of our fathers. >> i'm honored to be here. >> reporter: army staff sergeant bailey was a teenager when he headed straight into the battle zone on the beaches of normandy. now, 88 years old, he remembers being part of the red ball express, providing an important

role in supplying our troops. >> we greatly appreciate it. >> if it weren't for their efforts, we would have lost. they supplied our troops with everything needed in order to be successful in their campaign. >> the special recognition given to african americans who fought in world war ii. >> in a battle, a bullet coming your way has no distinction. whether white victim or black victim. >> reporter: bailey and his grandson who is in the air force helped lay down a wreath at the foot of the freedom wall. 4,000 gold stars signifying the 400,000 who lost their lives in the war. bailey has left a legacy of generations who have served and will serve our country. >> we have a lot of grandchildren who are adamant about the services for our country. >> reporter: surae chinn, 9news

now. president obama and the first lady were at arlington national cemetery this morning. they laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown and then they headed to california for veterans day ceremony in san diego. penn state university's boferred trustees is launching its own investigation into the child abuse sexual scandal making international headlines. we've also learned today that the man who alerted coach joe paterno about an alleged incident is receiving threats. we'll get the latest information now from manuel gallegus in state college, pennsylvania. penn state university officials are scrambling to do damage control at a packed board of trustees meeting. >> we're a university that will rebuild the trust and confidence that so many people have had in this for so many years. >> the trustees will launch an investigation to try to determine exactly what sexual

crimes former football coach jerry sandusky may have committed on campus and why it was never reported to police. the fallout from the scandal is growing, assistant football coach mike mcqueary will not be at tomorrow's game because the university says he has received multiple threats. mcqueary told coach joe paterno he witnessed sandusky violating a 10-year-old boy in the gym showers in 2002 but he did not go to authorities. penn state's athletic director and a vice president are charged with perjury and failure to report the assaults. the university's president and legendary coach paterno were also fired. the 23-page indictment details sandusky's alleged molestation of victims he met at second mile, the charity he founded. a woman who worked alongside him said sandusky always surrounded himself with boys. >> as far as how his interactions were around young people, it really wouldn't -- it wouldn't set off any bells

and whistles because that's what he was about. >> reporter: sandusky's attorney said his client is innocent and is devastated his former boss lost his job. manuel gallegus, cbs news, state college, pennsylvania. the grand jury report says that most of the inappropriate contact happened on campus where sandusky maintained an office as an honorary professor. venezuelan authorities say that they are confident they can quickly solve the kidnappings of washington nationals catcher wilson ramos. they say they are working around the clock to solve that case. armed men seized ramos on wednesday outside his home in valencia. authorities have found a stolen suv used by the kidnappers. topping today's campaign 2012 coverage, republicans will have a working majority in the virginia state senate next year. the race is over in the 17th

district. incumbent democrat ed houck conceded the race yesterday to republican bryce reeves. the latest tally from virginia gives reeves a 222 vote lead. houck said thursday that he will not ask for a recount. the senate will have a 20/20 split with republican lieutenant-governor bill bolling casting the tie- breaking vote. well, today, virginia governor bob mcdonnell will officially endorse george allen in next year's senate race. both are republicans. allen faces a g.o.p. primary challenge from at least other candidates. tim kaine is expected to be the nominee for the democrats. now, to the republican presidential hopefuls, one of the women who filed a sexual harassment claim against herman cain is putting her plan for a press conference on hold. an attorney for karen said he wants the other accusers there but he can't get them all on

board. she says that cain harassed her while he led the national restaurant association. coming up next on 9news now at noon, for the first time since the earthquake in august, the national cathedral is reopening this week. we'll tell you why it could take years, however, before it is fully restored. we'll be right back.

one of washington's historic attractions is in the process of getting a face-lift. after that earthquake shook the capitol in august, damage from the quake caused the national cathedral to close its doors for months. well, it is set to reopen this weekend. but complete restoration could take years and millions of dollars. emily schmidt takes us inside the cathedral for a look at the rebuilding process. >> reporter: things soar at the national cathedral. from easter morning music to hopes lifted during a prayer service. they're supposed to soar, not fall. but on august 23rd, that rule shook right along with everything else. >> i'm watching the whole building move and the floor boards, this really is an earthquake. >> a 5.8 magnitude quake jolted the world's sixth largest cathedral, all 150,000 tons of

it. >> i never thought something like that could happen. obviously we're not earthquake country so nobody else saw it happening either. >> reporter: the foundation shook the highest dome fell. it was a bit like the building had cracked. >> the energy went up, up, up, up, through the walls. of course, the slender pinnacles just popped. >> up here in the highest part is where most of the damage occurred. >> pinnacles toppled indiana limestone twisted like a dishrag. >> you can't see how intricate the stones are when you're looking at them from 300 feet below. every single one that fell will have to be hand carved to put back up and the stonemasons say it could take years. >> it is handmade. the building is handmade. >> the craftsmanship draws 700,000 visitors each year. some worship at episcopalian services. they have gathered for the funerals of reagan and ford.

after the earthquake, the cathedral was closed. only now are things stabilized enough to reopen the doors. >> i want to see this place full of people and noise and music and what it was made for. but that's just reinforcing a decade of rebuilding will cost an estimated $15 million. money that must now be raised. >> it is a lot of money. it is a lot of money particularly in churches. church dorals are difficult dollars to raise. but this church is a different kind of church. it is a national church. >> the district of columbia's mayor requested fema funding but it is unclear if the government will fund a place of worship. cathedral employees say it is bigger than that. >> this building is not god. it is built to symbolize the role that faith plays in our country. it is only, i think, affirmed our commitment to serve and our mission to be the spiritual home for the nation. >> high hopes for a cathedral that will take work to once

military and the uso. you may not know his face but i bet you know his voice. lou katz of washington f.m. radio. >> thanks for having me on here. this is wonderful. thank you so much. >> as you reflect today on veterans day, what comes to mind? >> two words. same words we were using on the radio station this morning. thank you! it is a big day for thank you, j.c. you know, i think so many people get wrapped up with the federal holiday, oh, it is veterans day, there are sales but today is really, to me, one of two really important days of the year where we reflect on the military and the families. memorial day and veterans day. thank you are the two most important words you can say today. >> we really don't say it enough. only one day out of the year. i hope that people who are listening, if they see somebody from the military, give them a hug. >> i think it is a great idea to do that. you know, you drive around, how many flags have you seen out today? i haven't seen that many out.

it is very important. we need your support! we're going to go to howard and get another look at the weekend forecast. >> j.c., we're going to do a lot better as we go through the weekend. today, the cold day, veterans day, clouds mixing in. we're looking at temperatures which are going to be slowly moving into the 50 degree range, maybe the low 50s this afternoon. 49 here. the winds, they've been howling, gusting 35, 37 in spots, sustained in the 20, 23 range early. the winds will slack as we get to the evening. by 5:00, it will be sunset. 47. west winds at 12. the wind chills not nearly as biting. high school football games tonight, it will be certainly on the chilly side if the temperature starts to drop into the low 40s, maybe some upper 30s before the game is over. today, we started out with some sunshine. still sunny south and east. look north and west how the clouds are moving in. especially coming out of the blue ridge now into loud be county -- loudoun county, montgomery county into prince

george's. south of town, more sunshine. we've got warmer temperatures. these are the wind gusts, gusting to 35 at leesburg, gusting to 30 in martinsburg. 36 and the wind gust at pax river and also in baltimore. we're gusting to 30 in d.c. when you factor in temperatures which are right now only in the mid to upper 40s, we've got 50s in fredericksburg and tappahannock and cambridge, it is cold. the wind chill still in many areas, holding in the 30s. in hagerstown, feels like 34. andrews feels like 39. here in d.c., that wind chill, 40 degrees. right now, the airport reporting mostly cloudy skies. sustained winds out of the northwest at 20. that gives us a wind chill of 40 degrees with that air temperature of 47. and the air is really dried out. yesterday, we had the showers. in the afternoon. into maine pulling toward canada. behind that northwesterly flow producing some showers in the great lakes. the next biggest storm, that's off the california coast. you can see the waves of moisture moving in toward san francisco.

showers down in southern california, in the mountains seeing rain and snow. but there is nothing from that until this storm which is well east of us, except for these snow showers. so, once we get rid of the cold today and the wind today, we'll be in much better shape for the weekend. tonight, we're going to clear out. it will be a cold night. we're down in the 30s by tomorrow morning. the winds turn southwesterly on saturday. that's a warm direction for us. so, we're going to warm it up in the afternoon. close to 60 which is right about where we should be. for sunday, even milder. maybe a few more clouds mixing in. i'm expecting sunday's temperatures to be maybe upwards of 65 degrees by sunday afternoon. so, it will be more comfortable here pretty quickly but today, today is a cold one. looking at the next three days, 51 this afternoon. winds still going to gust around 30 miles per hour. tonight, down in the 30s with lighter winds. tomorrow, breezy, 60. sunday, milder, 65. next week, the temperature still in the mid-60s. could be a shower or two in here monday. tuesday is more likely. then holding with some mild
