. breaking news. kidnapped nationals catcher ray ramos has been found in venezuela. plus topper is tracking the weather. see the impact. plus more breaking news. shots fired by the white house. we are live. and we have two big breaking stories. national's catcher william ramos found alive. more on that in a minute. but first a wild shootout near the white house. the secret service and park police have shut down constitution avenue. ken molestina is on the scene

live. ken. >> reporter: yes, anita, this is an active crime scene right now. this is 23 rd and constitution. one of two scenes that have been locked down. there was a car just moments ago that was removed from this area believed to have been involved in the alleged shots fired call. we understand that officials did find a rifle inside that car. that car, again, removed just seconds ago right before we went on the air. now, right now there are conflicting reports between two different police agencies as to exactly what happened. the first account according to dc police on the scene said begun fire between two cars was -- gunfire between two cars was exchanged between 16th and constitution. that is near the white house and the washington monument. this car that was left abandoned is believed to have been involved, but no one was found inside the car. now u.s. park police say they're the ones in charge of the investigation and they have no evidence suggesting that any shots were fired. according to them, they're simply investigating the sounds of shots fired. >> right now we don't have any evidence that we recovered that

shots had been fired. we did respond to a report that there was a sound of shots fired. right now we're looking for evidence of shots fired to see if there is any shell casings or anything like that. >> reporter: all right, folks. back out live here. just seconds ago this area here once again opened up to the traffic. u.s. park police did have it locked down. but, again, they did find a rifle. a rifle was discovered inside a car that they were investigating. right now still no word as to exactly what happened. but we do know no one has been arrested and no one has been hurt. we will, of course, let you know what happens. anita. >> a lot there developing tonight. ken, thank you for that. now, we'll get to our other breaking news tonight. in just the last hours, venezuelan authorities say they have found washington national's catcher alive and safe. as you probably know, he had been kidnapped just over 48 hours ago. sports anchor dave owens joins us now with the latest on this very good news. dave. >> you know, alive and safe. those are the two operative

words that are being used. the nationals catcher found about 40 miles northwest of his home where he was abducted on wednesday. the news was initially reported via twitter by venezuelan information and a little more than an hour ago his agent confirmed that his client was, indeed, with police and heading back home. "they got him and he's safe". those were the words to the washington post. it ends an ordeal when he was abducted wednesday. a statement was made. the crowd, of course, erupted. now, 9 sports has reached out to the nationals to get their reaction or an official statement. no response yet. there are obviously more questions to ask here. will they submit him back to the states. there will be a lot more information disseminated and we'll have them for you as we get them.

guys. >> great he is save. we also have new developments tonight in the penn state sex scandal. we're learning president graham spanier may get yanked off the military board of advisors. a source tells cnn navy officials are reviewing his role and will likely remove him. today joe paterno's son hired rick sellers on his father's behalf half. in a statement he says his father is distraught over what happened on wants the truth to be uncovered but is being advised to keep silent during the investigation. and on penn state's campus tonight, students gathered to show sympathy for the eight boys that were abused by jerry sandusky. >> the school supports the kids that were victims of it and to support what is right. >> penn state also plays coach mike mcquerie on paid leave.

he witnessed sandusky raping a child in a locker room child in 2002. sandusky is out on bond and he claims he is innocent. a 21-year veteran got a surprise when he was banned from a real estate examination because they wouldn't let his service dog in the room. >> he needs the service dog and he was angry he wasn't able to take the test because the faithful companion was with him. meet the problem. all 13 pounds of dachshund made for the star dan moreno. >> 21 years loved serving the country and i was medically retired because i could no longer do my job. he needs the dog. but when he went to a testing

service to take an exam. >> i was informed i would not be allowed to test because i had my service dog with me. and i explained that the americans with disability act allows moreno my service animal, he's not a pet, to go with me anywhere the public allowed. >> reporter: the company that gives the test says it accommodates those with service dogs. >> but they must follow a procedure. and that procedure is to contact us and submit the proper request for a special accommodation. >> reporter: which the company says he didn't do and which halsted says he doesn't have to do. >> the irony of it being on veteran's day, i even chose veteran's day to take the test. i have four children and all four of them have served in the armed forces. two of them are currently still serving. so i have a particular appreciation for veterans. >> reporter: and is making arrangements for halsted to take the test with moreno. >> i wish him well.

for our allies. good news, a new funding agreement is getting a thumbs up from local leaders. it will bring down costs of the project. most importantly, the deal includes a commitment from the transportation department for federal moneys. >> this is good news. it looks like we have got a plan, a strategy that can help us move forward with phase two. and in a way that is affordable for our taxpayers. >> it doesn't mean anything. all it is is fancy words that mean they have to pay the debt service. they're going to finance this with bonds. >> okay. now the deal still needs to be approved by all stakeholders building the project. all right. a warning to all drivers in prince george's county tonight. the county police department and the maryland state police are joining forces during the holidays to stop unsafe driving.

arlington national cemetery where he laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns and thanked all of the american veterans. and over at the mall, thousands of veterans and their family visited the memorial gathering at the wall to remember those who have served ♪ tap is playing . you have to agree, it's impressive enough to make it to the age of 96. but it's even more when the past is being one of the first ever in the u.s. army. christian fisher spent this day capturing the life of irene soroth. >> the military was very proud of the fact that only men could join. >> reporter: irene wasn't allowed to enlist at the start of world war ii. but three years in, that changed with the creation of the women's army corps. she became one of the first women in the u.s. army. >> i didn't have any large thoughts about it. i was thinking one step at a time. >> reporter: irene wasn't

thrilled about her first assignment after basic training. >> my first job assignment was in charge of the clothing warehouse. >> reporter: but her assignments quickly grew. she spent the remainder of world war ii at the pentagon. and during the korean war, she was selected by general eisenhower to help write a book about women why the work force. >> i felt i was doing a very important job. >> reporter: irene bought this home in falls church during world war ii. this is where she lived all of those years that she worked art the pentagon and it's still her home. >> i was very lucky in the army. >> reporter: irene retired a lieutenant color 26 years of service. but the 96 -year-old still wears the symbol of the women's army corps around her neck. >> the work that was required was needed and i was able to do it adequately. the amount of satisfaction you
