volume, the headlights heading around to silver spring out of college park. south on 270, i-95 down from baltimore. downtown traffic is pretty light. we're coming up, we'll have another report for you at 6:12. mike, back to you. thanks, beverly. we'll talk to you then. tension definitely on the rise. check out this video from portland, oregon. police had to start arresting some of the protestors at two city parks there. >> hours later, the protestors fought back. that's not the only place this is happening. surae chinn is live at the occupy d.c. camp in northwest washington. surae, good morning and how are things there? >> well, things are going very peacefully. it is calm here at mcpherson square. 15th and k streets northwest. as you were saying, not the case across the country. we do have some local protestors here, joe and rusty, to talk about the reaction of some of the clashes between police and protestors in places such as portland, albany, new

york and oakland, california. >> definitely stand in solidarity with the other movements. they're our sister movements. it is really tearable that they are facing that kind of violence from police. luckily we've been able to avoid that here. >> rusty and joe, talk about the violence that may have occurred here because of police chiefs saying you have been increasingly confrontational with bystanders. your response? >> if you were to come down here and talk with anybody down here for five minutes, you would realize there is no violent people down here. >> there have been fights and accidents claiming that you guys jumped in front of the car but you guys are saying also that it was intentional. some of the response to some of the violence coming into the campsite. >> well, we definitely try to deal with the violence coming into the campsite as prudently as possible. it is not a regular thing. it is very spaced-out. it really depends on the night like full moon was terrible. >> but it is isolated. you're -- what you were saying before is people are coming in, causing trouble, is that the case or is there something else

going on? >> very occasionally. it is not a regular thing but every once in awhile. >> real quick, lastly though, you guys do not have a permit here. are you willing to do the same thing and get arrested just like in portland and what happens then? what are you guys willing to do? >> as an act of civil disobedience, exercising my first amendment right, i would stay in the park. >> thank you joe and rusty. police are saying they're shutting the places down in other parts of the country because of unhealthy reasons and a lot of times, they're devoted some of their officers to these campsites that are taking away from the police force. that is the very latest here at occupy d.c. and mcpherson square. back to you. >> surae chinn reporting live from mcpherson square this morning. >> president obama wrapped up his trip to his home state of hawaii. the president was attending the asian pacific economic summit in honolulu. the trade agreement would involve north america and asia. the president says opening

markets to freer trade would give the economic recovery a boost. he also took a question on his jobs bill which is having difficulty making it through congress. the american people, at this point, are wondering about congressional leadership in failing to pass a jobs bill. the components of which, the majority of americans including many republicans think are a good idea. >> the summit is over but the president will hold a campaign fund-raiser at a hawaiian resort then he's off to several asian countries for a diplomacy mission. we should know later today what sparked a house fire in montgomery county sunday night. authorities say the flames broke out at this corner townhouse on shady spring terrace which is in gaithersburg. the fire quickly spread to two other homes. they were also damaged. no one was hurt in this. >> nationals catcher wilson ramos has plans on making his debut with the venezuelan winter league wednesday just a week after he was kidnapped from his own home in his home

country. the story has a happy ending. he was rescued friday night by commandos. we still haven't been told why he was kidnapped. the team said he's physically ok. ramos is staying in venezuela, which, again, is his home country. bad news on the field and off the field for the redskins sunday. off the field, two of the players may face punishment for violating the nfl's drug policy. >> fred davis and trent williams reportedly broke the rules against recreational drug use. big question is whether they allegedly broke the rules during the lockout which means they wouldn't be held to the nfl rules. >> on the field, not a good day at all. redskins visiting the dolphins sunday. rex grossman got the start at quarterback. he was picked off twice, sacked three times. d.c. falls to miami 20-9. >> disappointed. any time you get in the red zone three times, your defense does a pretty good job. then we move the ball, make the mistake. you have to make the plays to win football games.

good. get on the 395, building volume. our next timesaver traffic at 6:18. andrea? >> thank you, beverly. members of the debt subcommittee in congress aren't giving up hope they'll reach a deal by next week. they're not optimistic they'll do it. that's one of the stories making news now at 6:12. the bipartisan committee has until next wednesday to cut spending and the deficit. otherwise, automatic cuts will be made with social programs and defense spending. the subcommittee was created as part of the deal to raise the debt ceiling last summer. economists mario monti will take over as the new premiere of italy. sylvio berlusconi resigned this weekend after italy's measures aimed at rescuing the country's economy. democrat ray tomlin is officially the new governor of west virginia. he was sworn in yesterday in charlestown. he's been serving as acting governor for a year since joe manchin left for the u.s.

senate. mike? today is the start of american education week. our next guest has the keys to reforming our schools which a lot of people talk about wanting to do is getting you, the parent involved. the president of the national education association. i'm a dad. i enjoy being a part of my child's school. is that the key to make things better? >> absolutely. at the school, when we get the administration teamed together and the school board and all of the people who work there, then when we reach out to parents of the community, that's the formula for success. you have to be involved with your son or daughter's education. talk to them about it. at the elementary school, we often see parents come to open house and so on. through the high school years, it is just as important. conversation, the rides in the car. opportunity to ask them about school, what they see happening there. how they see it, envisioning their future. what do you want to be when you're 25. conversation is big. >> do you think parents just, when they get into the high school, they're almost adults. they push them off on their own a little bit. maybe they should be more

involved? >> a combination. those kids are striving for independence. high school math teacher for 23 years, they want to be independent but they're still very much dependent on parents for conversations, for advice. don't make decisions for them. but sure, you definitely want to influence them. >> the studies show even though they say that your teens can rebuff you, they're still listening. >> absolutely. as a teacher, i really tried to take time between classes, passing time, any time to connect with them in their real life. whether it is athletics or music or whatever their interests were and i think as parents, we need to do the same thing. connect with them. have conversations. >> they understand you're listening that way. >> absolutely. >> one of the fun things you're doing to celebrate and enjoy the start of education week has to do with the web site. what is it? >> a great place to get all of the different things happening in american education. this is the 90th anniversary. number one, we're celebrating

with the clouds. south winds are 9 miles per hour. there is the breeze i'm talking about. it will get stronger than that. the dew point slowly rising. moisture moves in on the heels of the southerly winds. a lot more moisture out to our west and southwest. jet stream taking a big dip in the baja coming across west texas. up into the midwest here, with all of the showers and storms from illinois in toward pennsylvania, but this is moving off to the east- northeast. this is going to stay north of us today. there is a front up here. this front is going to sag south and bring us a better chance of showers tomorrow and especially wednesday. today, we're looking good through the afternoon. here we are, 5:00. tonight into tomorrow morning, notice how the showers and 6:00 a.m. tuesday, lighter ones across the region. heavier ones well west of us. a few showers here from midday. they take off for the afternoon on tuesday but by wednesday, another batch of rain moves over us and will be with us much of the day on wednesday. some of the computer models, we're talking one and a half inches of rain here by the time

at 10:00 a.m. mass was celebrated inside for the first time in months. ♪ >> reverend mary ann edgar was consecrated as the ninth episcopal bishop of washington. the pews were filled as the cathedral welcomed worshippers back inside. church bells rang for the first time since the earthquake topple and cracked spires on the church and the crowd inside really enjoyed being back. >> the church that i'm from at home in the bronx is much smaller and not nearly as lavish so it was really nice to just see a different design. >> completing the repairs on the cathedral expected to take years and at a cost of more than $15 million. police in oakland, california, are telling the occupy protestors they need to leave a town square. >> this follows a similar move by police in portland, oregon. this weekend. that led to a clash in that city. >> surae chinn is live at the occupy protest here in the district. surae, how are things there this morning? >> well, things are peaceful

and there is no sign police are shutting down occupy d.c. here at mcpherson square at 15th and k streets northwest. but that isn't the case with occupy movements across the country. police in riot gear in portland, oregon, started cracking down on protestors. they're tearing down tents and shutting down samp sites. in some cases, they put protestors in twist ties and carried them out. portland's mayor and police chief ordered the shutdown of these sites because of unhealthy conditions. >> i think our officers communicated very clearly to them that that area was closed and they needed to leave. we use minimal force to push them back. folks that wanted to be arrested, we told them to have a seat. we would facilitate their arrests which we did. >> well, police really do have a concern as these occupy movements carry on through the weeks and months across the country in oakland, california,

there were two deadly shootings and two other people found dead at the campsite. there was another man who was found dead in salt lake from drug use and carbon monoxide poisoning from a heater that was on. a military veteran was also found dead. he shot himself at a vermont campsite. another man was dead for two days until police found him in new orleans. so, police really are concerned about this and so far though, here in occupy d.c. at mcpherson square, no encroachments on their campsite and no shutdown here at occupy d.c. mike, andrea? >> surae chinn reporting live at mcpherson square this morning. the hunt continues this morning for the gun han who took potshots at a metrobus. one man was struck as the u6 bus pulled away from a stop at 37th street near eli place in southeast d.c. early sunday morning. medics rushed the unidentified man with wounds to his leg, hand and arms to the hospital. he is expected to survive.

investigators spoke with witnesses and are reviewing footage from a camera on the bus. now, for a quick check of the stories from the campaign trail this morning, the wife of republican presidential candidate herman cain is defending her husband. he's been tkoágd over the last few weeks by accusations that he sexually harassed several women. gloria cain says she can't believe the accusations. she says "he totally respects women." >> former congressman frank kratovil says no to a rematch with andy harris. he represented maryland's first congressional district. he was ousted by harris, a republican last november. kratovil now works for prince george's county state attorney's office. 6:35. jessica doyle is here with another "your money" report. >> imagine that. she says bank fees keep rolling and growing. >> that's right. they're certainly not going away any time soon. what the banks are doing now, they're quietly sneaking them into services. even as bank of america and other major banks have backed away from charging customer

"the new york times" reports these examples, bank of america charging $5 to replace a lost debit card or $20 if you need rush delivery. if you deposit money with a low ball phone, they'll charge you $50 a check. >> want cash wired to your account? starting in december that, will cost $15 for each incoming payment at td bank. owners of the new iphone 4s and folks who downloaded the operating system have reported problems with short battery life. an update to the ios5 was supposed to relieve the problem but some users are complaining the fix didn't work and in some cases, it is making the problem even worse. the system update was released on thursday. and there is a new barbie your little girl may be clamoring for this holiday season. mattel is rolling out six star doll barbie dolls. you can see them there on your screen. star doll is a girl's web site with 200 million girls

worldwide logging on could digitally dress up dolls. our partners at "usa today" report the new barbies are mini fashionistas right down to their eyelashes. unlike normal barbies, these aren't painted on but they're rooted and protrued and they come with a pretty hefty price tag. about $21 a piece. >> are these called barbies? >> they're barbies but they're called star doll by barbies so they're a jointly marketed franchise for mattel now. >> glad i'm out of that market. >> i'm not into it yet. >> thanks, jess. >> there's not a lot of good things that came out of sunday's loss by the redskins. they were in south florida taking on the dreadful dolphins but they didn't look dreadful yesterday. sacking rex grossman three times and intercepting him twice including the pick as the skins were on a drive. miami scored on that interception with reggie bush
