hello, i'm j.c. hayward. thanks for being with us. late this morning, the supreme court announced that it will begin hearing arguments concerning president obama's healthcare overhaul. they are expected to begin in march and the decision to hear arguments in the spring allows plenty of time for decision to be reached, several months before election day. many contend that the law is unconstitutional because it requires individuals to buy health insurance or pay a penalty. the occupy movement is

causing increased tension in many cities. officials in law enforcement are trying to deal with violence, sanitation problems, and demonstrators who show no signs of leaving. police in oakland, california, have been on the move after arrests yesterday. we have bridget with the latest from portland, oregon. >> can you please stand up. ♪ >> reporter: protestors sang songs from the civil rights movement as they were cuffed and led away by police this morning in oakland. officers in riot gear went tent to tent clearing demonstrators. calls to end the occupation have intensified after a man was shot and killed near the camp last week. >> we had to bring the camp to an end before more people were hurt. >> reporter: in portland, oregon, chain-linked fences topped with barbed wire are in place to keep protestors from reoccupying camps. sunday, police carried away demonstrators who refused to leave. more than 50 people were

arrested. portland's mayor says the police actions were necessary because the camps are unhealthy. portland is one of several cities trying to cope with the occupy camp but protestors showed no sign of ending their demonstration and sanitation is become being a problem. city officials want to reopen the portland park to the public but are concerned about hazardous materials in the mountains of garbage left behind. >> it is hard to tell what's mixed in with the leaves. there is a worry about syringes. i don't know if any were ever found. >> reporter: over the weekend, police clashed with demonstrators in salt lake city. denver and albany, new york. protestors are vowing to continue their occupation through the winter. cbs news, portland. an arrest warrant has been issued in friday night's shooting near the white house. police recovered an ak-47 rifle from an abandoned car and they believe it is a weapon that was fired on constitution avenue. u.s. parks police say that

oscar ortega is their suspect. not just a person of interest in the case. right now, 21-year-old ortega faces charges of carrying a dangerous weapon. and police say that his right hand has a tattoo of three dots. on his upper back is a tattoo of his name, ortega. on the left side of his neck is the at that time too far the words israel. right now, a team of maryland state forensic experts are inspecting a car that was used in a deadly hit-and-run accident over the weekend. police say the driver surrendered to police after hearing that an unidentified woman had been struck and killed on route 3 in bowie, maryland. it happened yesterday morning. the driver was released without being charged. we now have the latest information on the child sexual abuse scandal at penn state university.

pennsylvania's governor says that the assistant football coach who told a grand jury that he witnessed the child being raped in a shower had a moral responsible to intervene. former defensive coordinator jerry sandusky has been charged with sexually abusing eight boys. this morning, the school's new president promised change. >> i've laid out a set of five promises to the penn state community and the wider national community to tell them about the things that we're going to do, to make sure that everyone at penn state understands not just their legal obligation but their moral obligation to do the right thing the first time, every time. >> sandusky is out on bail and he has maintained his innocence. the legendary football coach, joe paterno, was relieved of his duties last week. president obama wrapped up his trip to his home state of hawaii. it appears that a new trade agreement could be flourishing.

the president was attending the asian pacific economic summit in honolulu. the trade agreement would involve north america and asia. the president says opening markets to freer trade would give the economic recovery a boost. and he also took a question on his jobs bill which is having difficulty making it through congress. the american people, at this point, are wondering about congressional leadership in failing to pass a jobs bill. the components of which the majority of americans, including many republicans think are a good idea. today, the president will hold a campaign fund-raiser at a hawaiian resort and then he's off to several asian countries for a diplomacy mission. in the republican race for president, new poll numbers are showing that herman cain is still leading the race for the republican nomination.

but allegations of improper behavior appear to be costing him some votes. danielle nottingham reports that same poll shows that president obama is vulnerable. >> new poll numbers show herman cain still leading the pack of republican presidential hopefuls. but a closer look at the politico george washington university survey indicates his support is slipping in the wake of sexual harassment allegations. cain spent more than two weeks fighting back against those accusations. now, his wife is defending him publicly. >> to hear such graphic allegations, i know that's not the person he is. he totally respects women. >> gloria cain's interview airs tonight on fox news channels. it is a rare appearance for her. she's not been a visible part of cain's run for the white house. the latest polling shows mitt romney and newt gingrich gaining some support.

the two took aim at president obama's policies over the weekend at the cbs news national journal debate. >> if we re-elect barack obama, iran will have a nuclear weapon. and if we elect mitt romney, if you elect me as the next president, they will not have a nuclear weapon. >> we're here tonight, talk to the american people about why every single one of us is better than barack obama. >> the numbers show voters may be inclined to agree with gingrich. they're not happy with the president's performance on the economy. and when asked if they would vote to re-elect president obama or elect an unnamed republican challenger, voters were evenly split. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. the candidates are now shifting more attention to iowa. the next debate will occur there and the caucuses are set for january 3rd. the organist at the national cathedral will play for visitors later this afternoon. it is the latest event in the weekend of festivities to mark the reopening of the d.c.

landmark. the cathedral was closed to the public since august 23rd because of that earthquake. which caused stone work to fall from the building's towers. repairs are expected to take years and cost at least $15 million. the cathedral is also opening an exhibit, documenting the damage. still to come when 9news now continues, see how some persuasive peer pressure is helping high school girls choose a brighter future over teen pregnancy.

the norwegian right wing extremists who confessed to a bombing and shooting spree that killed 77 people in july has arrived for his first open- court hearing. anders brev knick has been charged with launching a deadly attack on a government building and a youth camp. the media has been banned from reporting on the proceedings. and no photography or video recordings will be allowed. previous court hearings in the case have been closed to the public. well, nationals catcher wilson ramos plans on making his debut with the venezuelan winter league on wednesday. that's just one week after he was kidnapped from his home. the story has a happy ending.

body of research that says teen pregnancy is less likely when boys and girls have a close, caring relationship with a trustworthy adult. brenda miller, executive director of the d.c. campaign to prevent teen pregnancy can easily describe protective factors that keep teens from becoming pregnant. her program brings together young girls once a week to talk, bond and share. the d.c. campaign to prevent teen pregnancy is committed to making sure that children are born into stable two-parent families who are ready to take on the responsibility of raising the next generation. programs like this make sure that they are successful. 17-year-old sharp etta barkley is a senior at the school without walls. she is familiar with teen behavior and talks candidly to her friends. >> i can help people my age and let girls know that there are many other choices other than just becoming pregnant or

earlier and earlier. winds will be up all afternoon out of the south. wind direction out of the south. 15, 14, 14. we've had gusts, 25, 27, 28 miles per hour in spots. a breezy afternoon. in fact, our weather headlines, warm and breezy today. showers will move in late tonight, probably after midnight. be around tuesday through midday. maybe break in the afternoon. wet and cooler on wednesday. wednesday, chance for rain or showers almost all day and then a system pushes through. behind that much colder, late week, talking thursday and friday, we'll struggle to get back toward 50. clouds streaming through during the morning. some breaks, some high, thin clouds. allow the sunshine to come through some in d.c. a little bit thicker out to the shenandoah valley. this morning, most temps only got down in the 50s as opposed to so many 30s. cumberland and frederick got down into the 40s this morning. right now, a look at this. we're in the 60s and 70s with

73 in petersburg. 73 down in tappahannock and fredericksburg. 72 annapolis. 71 down in newland. 70 in cambridge and manassas. and here in town, 67. little bit cooler up north and west in the mid-60s in the shenandoah valley and northern virginia where clouds have been a little bit thicker. mostly cloudy on the hour. i'm telling you, it is mostly sunny here in northwest with a south wind at 13. dew point continues to creep up at 50. that relative humidity only 54%. pretty nice out. especially for november. got the southwest flow going on. you can see this. look at the clouds in mexico. they go northeast all the way through texas and oklahoma all the way through parts of the midwest where we've had some showers and storms develop this morning. potentially another round is going to fire in parts of indiana and ohio. we might be looking at isolated tornadoes this afternoon. severe weather threat there. for us, we're south of all of this. other than the high clouds, we're on the warm side of the equation. that's why this afternoon's temps will be 70ish. there is a front coming. not this afternoon but

overnight tonight, this thing is going to get closer to us with a few showers in here by tomorrow morning. midday, we still have some showers. some break up of that in the afternoon. and then watch what happens all this moisture heads this way as we head into wednesday. look like we'll have periods of rain on wednesday, ahead of this next front. that's going to get here probably late wednesday and that will push everything out of here. so, today, 70ish. give or take a couple. tonight will be breezy. mid-50s with some showers. mild, 65 tomorrow with showers. cooler wednesday. more showers only in the upper 50s. by thursday and friday, near 50. it will be chilly. the better weather coming back for the weekend. saturday, 62. sunday in the mid-60s. we're going to the kitchen, a little wine and other treats when 9news now at noon returns.

as we're getting ready for thanksgiving, someone has reminded me that wine goes very well with the thanksgiving dinner. i would like for you to meet chef patrice. i love his name. from the south of france. >> of course. >> he's also from the academy le cuisine. about four weeks ago, i took a class from the academy and it was so much fun. i learned how to fix risotto. >> you have to come back to my class now. >> i will. >> it is just fabulous. you're in gaithersburg. there is one in bethesda. all kind of classes. you don't have to be smart because i took the class. you don't have to know how to

cook. it was just fun. all right, so, let's talk about wine. >> let's talk about thanksgiving and the wine. definitely a good wine pairing with the thanksgiving dinner. the reason for that, this is a wine that is light. you can drink a little bit fresh. also, it will be cold. pairing this with poultry, with brussels sprouts, with goat cheese and i could go and on. you can't go wrong! >> what is it again? >> this is -- this is a wine which is pressed with the skin. that's why you get the color. for about six hours. then the skin is removed and the wine goes into the fermentation process and then from there, they come up with a nice one. the good thing to say also, this is a wine which is dry. it can go well with everything. even dessert, even especially cheese, rosemary and the list goes on and on. the good thing about the wine, if you invite some in your
