white house. at mcpheer son square, 9news now. >> members of the occupy richmond group are breaking camp. that doesn't mean they are giving up. the antiwall street activists are accepting an offer from the editor in chief. publisher told the protesters they can encamp on his property right next to the mayor's office. the demonstrators took him up on that offer after they felt betrayed by the mayor after they ordered them move last month. turning now to that sex scandal up at penn state. jerry sandusky denying the charges against him. this whole scandal had an unexpected side effect. survivors of sex abuse are stepping out of the shadows and breaking their silence. ann degree andrea mccarren spoke with one victim this afternoon. >> it was sickening. >> j.c. derek's reaction, detailing the stunning allegations against

jerry sandusky. >> sexual predators flourish in the dark like roaches. they just spread and the only way we can combat this is to shine a bright light on their operating space. >> derek has broken his silence. from the age of eight, he was molested by a relative. >> it wasn't until i became an adult that i understood how i had been taken advantage of. >> in a phone interview, he said he is innocent. >> i have done some of those things. i have horsed around with kids. i have showered after workouts. i have hugged them and i have touched their legs. without intent of sexual contact. >> are you sexually attracted to young boys? to under age boys? >> am i sexually attracted to under age boys? sexually attracted, i enjoy young people. >> a long pause.

you shouldn't have to pause to answer that question. the predators oftentimes aren't liars. they are dilutional. they don't understand what they are. >> andrea mccarren, 9news now. >> in fact, sandusky's lawyer says his client regrets taking showers with those young boys. he said some of the alleged victims could recant. coming forward only because of potential monetary gain. a loudoun county middle schoolteacher has resigned amid accusations that he was drunk in class. radhakrishnan sivaramapillai was arrested yesterday while teaching at michael lunsford school. they smelled alcohol on his breath and reported it to the principal. >> it would have to be the assumption that he was under the influence while he was teaching the class. at what point this intoxication began. whether it was at lunchtime, we

aren't sure. >> the school day started with that teacher being suspended with pay and it ended with him resigning. he passed a background check when hired by loudoun county public schools two years ago. the rallying cry for sports is fear the turtle. there's a new kind of fear among athletes on campus this evening. they are in danger of losing their sports because of massive budget short false. scott broom is tracking the latest developments in college park. >> all 50 of the university of maryland swimming and diving team members converged on the administration building this afternoon prepared to beg to save their team. >> and to see this team be cut is just devastating. we worked so hard. >> getting here and now hearing this, we are cutting not only the mens and womens swimming programs, but a total of eight are on the chopping block is a shock to me. >> men's tennis players and

tumbling members are all among the eight varsity teams recommended for elimination to save up to $5 million a year. university athletics are hemorrhaging money with moneymakers like football struggling under new coach randy etzel and men's basketball looking for a return to glory years. sports revenues and giving are down. athletic losses peeked at $7 million. swimmers are among those who appear to be paying the price. >> i mean, we're not going to sit here and blame football and basketball. there are two other teams that work just as hard as we do. but it all comes down to budget and spending and some mistakes have been made. >> among the mistakes, a $50 million redo of bird stadium where luxury boxes are still not sold out. current athletic director, kevin anderson, has been criticized fiercely for dumping popular 2010 acc coach of the year in favor of etzel. anderson refuses to be

interviewed for television. the final decisions rest in the hands of university president, wallace d. lowe. and he is not aiming to prolong the pain. decisions are expected by the end of the year. at university of maryland, scott broom, 9news now. >> at least eight members of that swim team had qualified for the upcoming u.s. olympic trials. the nba lockout goes on. no end in sight for now. local businesses trailing the impact with no home games with the wizards, bars and restaurants are feeling that pinch. staff members, including bartenders and servers are faced with tips. sales usually spike 10 to 12% on nights the wizards are playing at home, but now they stand to lose thousands of dollars for every canceled game. >> 41 opportunities to have 10,000 people delivered to your front doorstep without you doing anything as a restaurant. missing those opportunities certainly does affect our top line sales. >> there are days when your

pockets are lighter when you are walking out. you hope the next day, they will be fuller when you leave. >> managers say it is tougher to fill those 6 00 plus seats when they are not able to count on the wizards fans. business managers are trying to figure out what to do. host more happy hours or theme parties. maybe that will bring the customers out. more than 90,000 people sined an online petition protesting the black friday hours. most of the stores will open at midnight for the first time and he should target employee and that means he'll have to cut his thanksgiving day celebration short. a lot of people say in this economy, it's hard to complain about working. >> you think it's a rough economy, but there are people who do not have jobs and those who have jobs should be fortunate for. >> that economy, i already know how that is. that means go to work and you know, make that money. >> and target spokeswoman says

employees will get holiday pay and they will try to accommodate those with holiday plans. let's get to topper and tell us more about what we can expect in our preholiday weather. >> i'm going to attach this to my hand over the next 24 hours. we are looking at good rains coming. let's start with the radar. we see a lot of showers in parts of west virginia and ohio pushing across into western maryland and pennsylvania. that activity will hang to the north of us for a while. 61 downtown. temperatures are still very nice. 57 in manassas and gaithersburg and 59 in leesburg. for tonight, mostly cloudy and cool. showers, thunderstorm possible south and east by dawn. lows 50 to 55. we thought 50 to 55 would be cooler, but it is. we'll come back and tell you what the rain and showers mean for your morning and possibly evening commutes tomorrow. thank you topper. coming up, it's a family affair. we'll tell you about some much needed aide for the spouses of those who serve. and a rick perry-like moment

military spouse scholarships are helping fill in those gaps and as peggy fox reports, they are helpful to families whose loved one comes home wounded. >> when your spouse is deployed to a war zone, you know the risks. you can't always prepare for what lay ahead. >> he was getting ready to come home for his two week vacation when he got run over. >> molina's husband, sergeant first class, lazondro scened massive injuries after being run over by a truck. he is a liquid diet for the rest of his life and hasn't been able to work. >> i think i did pretty good when i graduated with 3.44. >> she received military spouse scholarship and going for her master's. she's getting that with the help of a scholarship. it received a $250,000 grant from dominion virginia power.

down in miami. turning now to the presidential campaign trail. herman cain's poll numbers are sinking and his struggle to answer reporter's question on libya just spells more trouble for him. first, the stumble, then the efforts to brush it off. >> libya. >> it was a pause. that's all it was. good grief. >> an awful long pause, good grief. >> gingrich and other republican presidential hopefuls are in iowa. they are looking to sure up support. less than two months before the caucuses down there. these snakes are not on a plane. that's a good picture of the white house. with e have pictures of snakes. there they are. they're not on a plane, they are in somebody's house.

look out, the rain is coming. >> it's still 68 today and 73 yesterday. i would grab the umbrella and keep it handy until we get through the day on wednesday. in fact, we may get a rumble of thunder. let's start with the wide picture. satellite picture, radar

combined. looks like yesterday's picture, except the showers and clouds have dropped southeastward about 150, 200 miles. that's the only change. the heaviest activity is well to the north and to the west of us. but it will gradually move southward and be in the thick of it by tomorrow. right now, we have showers to the south of town. everything is light. all the heavy activity is passing through northern sections of west virginia and extreme western maryland. we do have showers in parts of metro area, but everything will stay away. in fact, here's live doppler. a couple showers, northern sections of charles county. that's about it. and pushing over to the bay. and a couple showers, much of the evening toward hagerstown. for the time being, everything is light. temperatures are still mild. i mean, 60 in arlington is a good deal. 57 in gaithersburg. pretty nice. 59 up in laurel. down to the south, we're still looking at 57 for belvoir.

manassas is 57. bring the umbrella and keep it handy. some showers tonight. a thunderstorm is possible south and east tonight. after midnight and before dawn. wetter wednesday and it does appear your morning commute will be wet and your evening commute will be wet. i tack on ten minutes either way because of that. your future cast, by midnight tonight, mostly showers. essentially from 50, 66 southward toward culpeper. you get in the morning hours, everybody is going to be wet. now we are seeing yellows and oranges, which is heavier activity. a little further north. this is why i think even west of i-95, we may see a thunderstorm tomorrow. by lunchtime or shortly thereafter, we have another batch after showers. you'll need your umbrella all day. by evening, another batch rolls through. we're looking at an inch of rain across the board with this particular system. everything finally moves out tomorrow night and early on thursday. maybe some lingering showers

it brought a lot of uninvited guests. they are the snakes. big time trouble for most of us, but for a man, i practiced that and still got it wrong. it means a full schedule. he is a volunteer snake catcher. he has been doing this for 30 years. he gets two calls a week, now ten a day. he rushes to the scene and that's what he finds, a big monster reptile maybe in somebody's living room. he just snatches it up. some of them bite. he says some of them don't. he has the scars to prove it. what happens to the snakes? i love to say they were delicious, but no, they are going to set them free once the flood waters recede. we'll be back. we want to hear what you think. send your e-mails to mcginty's mail bag. the address, mailbag@wusa9.com. 9news now will be right back.

us. she says it's a great idea. they are another level of security against bullying, vandalism, etcetera. as the criminal justice system knows. cameras are better than eyewitnesses and hard to refuse. the parents who are against this are probably afraid that their children will be caught on camera doing something wrong. well, maybe, but they could also be concerned about what our free society turns into as we allow more and more government surveillance all in the name of safety. meantime, over on the wusa9 facebook page. reaction to the parents of the 13-year-old charged with raping a five-year-old at a mcdonald's. the parents turned their son into the cops. the question on facebook, what wold you do? diana writes, i believe it would be absolutely heartbreaking to have to turn in your own child for a crime for the sake of everyone. it is the only thing to do. enabling criminal and deviant behavior will prolong the
