president obama was not at home at the time but the secret service says a bullet hit the white house! danielle nottingham reports that the secret service is trying to determine if it is connected to shots fired in the area last week. the secret service is investigating a bullet that hit the white house. agents found a cracked exterior window at 1600 pennsylvania avenue tuesday morning. protective glass stopped the bullet from entering president

barack obama's home. agents also found a second round outside the white house. the secret service is trying to figure out if the bullets are linked to an incident friday night. police swarm the area around the white house after witnesses heard gunfire. authorities tracked down a car and an ak-47 a few blocks away near the roosevelt bridge. >> president obama was not here at the white house when the shots were fired. he was in california but secret service agents are looking for a man they say may be a threat to the president. evidence collected from the car found on friday led u.s. park police to issue an arrest warrant for oscar ortega hernandez. >> this is a man who discharged a rifle in downtown d.c. i think that speaks volumes. >> reporter: a search is underway for ortega hernandez. he has an arrest record in three states and investigators say evidence shows he has a fixation with the white house.

danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. earlier this year, police charged a marine corps reservist, yonathan melaku with pre-dawn shootings at military buildings around the washington, d.c. area. well, today marks a decade since tsa was first created. one of the authors who wrote tsa into law is blasting the very organization that he created. he just held a press conference at reagan national airport. republican florida congressman john mica is calling for reform. he released a report documenting 25,000 instances of failures for items that have been on board planes that screeners should have caught. travelers have mixed feelings about that and overall safety with tsa in place ten years later. >> it definitely takes awhile when you come to the airport but that's just -- you know, what you're willing to do today if you want to fly and be safe.

>> it is a little annoying in consideration of all of the aggravation. >> there are still breaches. >> yes, even though you go through all of this. i'm surprised at the number quite frankly. it seems like a lot. >> i guess i never really felt unsafe in the past. >> we'll have a full report on the congressman's press conference coming up on 9news now beginning at 5:00 p.m. fairfax county police may have a lead in a murder case that is nearly 18 months old. they have released video of a man jumping into a woman's car at a shopping center parking lot in merrifield. the same parking lot where 18- year-old vanessa fam was last seen alive in june of 2010. the victim in this case was able to run away and was not injured. but fam was found dead inside her car, in a ditch, near route 50 in gallows road. no arrests have been made. a new turf field will be dedicated in manassas in honor

of miguel mickey hernandez. the 15-year-old was killed in a gang-related attack last november. hernandez stayed out of gangs and helped other teens do the same. the field was built with a grant aimed at preventing childhood obesity in virginia. police are looking for a killer after a deadly shooting in oxon hill, maryland, overnight. they found the victim shot on murray avenue near audrey lane. medics rushed the man to a nearby hospital, unfortunately, he died. investigators have not released the victim's identity. cameras finally caught up with assistant penn state football coach mike mcqueary. new investigation suggests he did intervene when he allegedly witnessed a former football coach sexually assaulting a boy in 2002. however, mcqueary had little to say when he spoke with cbs correspondenter armen ca tien.

reported. anti-wall street protestors have moved back into new york's park but without tents and without sleeping bags. a judge upheld the city's ban on camping gear late yesterday. but demonstrators vow to continue their occupation. randall pinkston has the latest from lower manhattan. >> this morning, only a handful of demonstrators remained in zuccotti park after dos of demonstrators spent a rainy night without tents or sleeping bags. a court order bans camping equipment from the park. >> ive woken up at 5:00 a.m., kicked on my foot -- what did you lie down on the bench? >> i was lying down. >> they removed the items from the park but they cannot remove the human spirit. >> reporter: the nypd evicted hundreds of protestors during a surprise raid early tuesday morning. city officials say demonstrators have a right to protest here but do not have the right to take over the park indefinitely. some slept in a church basement

overnight. the occupy wall street camp began here at new york zuccotti park two months ago thursday. organizers plan to mark the anniversary with a march on wall street and events worldwide. >> tomorrow is a very big day. it is a day of international action. >> other cities continue to take action against demonstrators. seattle police used pepper spray to break up an antiwall street protest last night, arresting a half-dozen marchers. protestors say a 19-year-old pregnant woman and an 84-year- old activist was sprayed. in berkeley, they're rebuilding their camp at the university of california. last week, campus police and demonstrators clashed when authorities enforced a camping ban. the university is investigating whether police used excessive force. randall pinkston, cbs news, new york. the rallying cry for the occupy protestors has been the 99% against the richest 1% of americans. among the 1%, more than one in

ten members of congress. that's according to our partners at "usa today." the richest lawmaker is congressman darrell issa, the california republican is worth an estimated $448 million. he owned a car alarm maker. now, on the senate side, massachusetts democrat john kerry is the richest. number two, virginia democrat mark warner worth $192 million. warner cofounded the cell phone company, nextel. "usa today" found that 58 members of congress are among the 1% of richest americans. 35 are republicans. 23 are democrats. the median net worth of a member of congress is $891,000. that's nine times the typical american household. east carolina university is on lockdown after a man with a gun was seen on the street that runs through the campus.

president obama is in australia, announcing plans to increase america's military presence there. hundreds of u.s. marines will go down under as soon as next year. however, the move has some in the international community nervous. tina kraus explains. >> reporter: president obama and australia's prime minister shook hands as allies, partners in a new military relationship. >> we are increasing our cooperation and i might add, america's commitment to this region. >> the agreement calls for u.s. marines to start training with australian forces in the northern part of the country

near the shipping lanes of the south china sea. 250 marines will arrive next year and a full military staff of 25 hundred will be in place within a few years. u.s. aircraft will also operate in northern australia. >> these rotations which are going to be taking place on australian bases, will bring our militaries even closer and make them even more effective. >> reporter: u.s. officials say the agreement is about providing disaster aid and combating terrorism and piracy but the security deal is widely seen as a response to china's increasing aggressiveness. president obama insists the u.s. does not fear china but says the world power will be held accountable. >> with their rise comes increased responsibilities. it is important for them to play it by the rules of the road. >> reporter: china responded with skepticism to the build- up. warning it may not be in the best interest of the

four astronauts will receive the congressional gold medal this afternoon. john glenn, neil armstrong, michael collins and buzz aldrin will be honored in a bipartisan ceremony, all four were pioneers in space exploration. by the way, the international space station is more crowded. that's because two russians and an american astronaut moved in this morning. shortly after the russian soyuz docked. the three will switch places with the crew who have been there since june. they'll return to earth next week. nasa is looking for a few good men and women who want to

be astronauts. of course, the u.s. does not have a manned space program anymore so you'll have to hitch a ride like american dan burbank is doing on a russian spacecraft. nasa is posting the job openings on its web site today and the pay maxes out at about $142,000 a year. the big perk is you get a chance to go into space! >> there are future plans. we're working on orion even though the shuttle program is over. not the end of space exploration. >> you would like to do that, wouldn't you? >> if they would take somebody my age. i'm probably too old for the requirement at this point. i live vicariously through my son some day. wet weather coming for the afternoon. kind of been a damp morning but we certainly have had some lulls, more moderate, heavy, maybe even some thunderstorms as far as the rainfall is concerned. that will be arriving later this afternoon into the evening. the rush hour later could be kind of messy.

here is your day planner. temperatures aren't really going to move much. upper to around 60 with a slow drop-off this afternoon as winds turn more northerly, front slipping through here. they'll pick up out of the north and northwest, 10 to 155 miles per hour. that will drop temps by tomorrow morning into the low. with maybe clearing late in the afternoon or mid afternoon, we won't get a lot of sunshine. i think temperatures tomorrow will not get out of the 40s for highs. today, we're pushing 60. look at the waves of moisture we've had coming through this morning, showers here. heavy stuff down just west of richmond right now. also out to the west here as you get into ohio and kentucky and tennessee. there have been all sorts of tornado watches along the gulf coast as well. here's live doppler 9000 hd. relatively quiet in calvert and anne arundel county. st. charles and prince george's county. light sprinkles on the weather terrace. we look to the south here. down through south valley, springfield, down 95 through dale city and lorton, mason

neck into southwestern prince george's county even into western charles county, we're seeing the showers. scattered about up to the north. go up 270 now, we're seeing some of the shower activity here into montgomery county, more so frederick, down route 15 as you head down toward leesburg and also over to harper'ser fromry. charlestown may have a couple of sprinkles there. one more stop to the south of town. showers picking up from quantico down through stafford. where it looks like we've had heavier activity go through stafford in the last few minutes. this is all tracking off to the northeast. quantico, heavier stuff in the next 20 minutes. there is more, a lot more of this to come for the afternoon. temperatures, big difference. mid-50s north to mid-60s at the tappahannock airport. cambridge is 62. our temperature has not budged at all since this morning. still at 57 degrees. winds are cape. low clouds outside. we could have some fog in spots. humidity at 100%.

a lot of cold air. look at this! north and west of us. minneapolis, 33. chicago, 38. we'll touch the cold air for tomorrow and friday once the storm system passes. until that happens, all of this moisture -- that's coming in our direction. looks like it will be here for tonight. that's a tornado watch down in alabama and georgia. it will be here for tonight and early tomorrow. we may see some showers early tomorrow with clearing moving in during the afternoon. so, today, 60ish if we're lucky. tomorrow, some early showers. we start in the low. we finish in the upper with late clearing and a blustery day. brisk winds, 10 to 15. a chilly friday. 49 and then the weekend, warmer and maybe a shower by late. stick around, we're going into the kitchen for some goodies when 9news returns.

we found a way to take the fuss out of thanksgiving dinner. let one of washington's top chefs do all of the work for you! i have chef john melke, the chef of cuisine at blue duck tavern located in the park hyatt hotel, 24th and m street. today, he is preparing one of my favorite dishes, brussels sprouts. i used to call them baby cabbages. these are very tiny. >> they're very teeny. they're from pennsylvania.

we start with a beautiful product. we have to do minimal work. blanch them lightly. hot pan with olive oil. we'll hit them with a little bit of bacon. everything is better with bacon. we'll get a little bit of the bacon fat rendered out. some red onions -- pickled red onions. >> that will be our little twist. >> everybody likes the bacon and the herbs. little thanksgiving day style with the cranberries, the sweet and sour fruitiness. >> thanksgiving, you'll be having a fabulous, fabulous menu, aren't you? >> absolutely. brurchl and dinner. just come join us for it. we have an a la carte dinner with all of the fixings, turkey, cranberry and stuffing and all of the foodstuff! >> that smells so good stuff. >> the water is for you. >> the water is for me. >> we want to hit it with our pickled onions. get the vinegar to dedelay the
