of unemployed people say they're going to do their best to avoid causing major traffic jams but they do have a march planned in the middle of rush hour. let me show you the scene here right now. you can see the folks kind of coming together, getting organized. they're having a big noon rally. those are folks from the teacher's union. they're also expecting hundreds of folks from the communication worker's union. you can see all of the occupy d.c. tents out here and the stage getting set up for the big teach-in. along about 2:00, 2:30, they're going to head out of mcpherson square over here right near the white house, head right down k street where, of course, all of the lobbyists are. cut over at some point to m street, march right through georgetown, head up to the key bridge. then they're going to have the big rally on the key bridge. they expect it will go right through rush hour. they have no intention of blockading the bridge, no intention of anybody getting

arrested. >> it has been all over the news. people know about it. we're not trying to block the bridge. we're planning to be on the sidewalk. there is congestion. there is always congestion there but the plan is to not block the bridge and be in solidarity with them on both sides. >> reporter: back now live, there will be some rubberneckers, a little bit of congestion but they're going to do their best to let other folks, regular commuters get on home. the point on the key bridge, they say it is structurally deficient. the president says it is structurally inefficient. they say it needs work and so do people here in d.c. the unemployed here in d.c. that's the point they're trying to make. j.c., back to you. all right, thank you very much. by the way, an 84-year-old occupy protestor who got pepper sprayed by police is getting an apology. in seattle, washington, dorley rainy was sprayed tuesday

night. we refused to leave an intersection after police ordered protestors to leave. last night, seattle's mayor apologized to rainey and other protestors, calling it a peaceful protest. the mayor is asking police to review exactly what happened. howard is forecasting cold temperatures and rain in our area. let's get full details from him right now. howard? >> j.c., it has been a raw day. we started in the 50s. we're down in the low to mid- 40s. wind chills are worse than that. this rain is mixed with sleet, even a few wet flakes on the eastern shore. now south of richmond where it has been heavier, it has been mixing with sleet. notice the whites and pinks coming out, that's a sign of the snow shower activity trying to mix in here. here in the immediate metro, notice bruce leshan was not in any rain. but south and east has been rather damp and chilly all morning. out to the west, coming from i- 81 into the park. a little pink showing up.

wintry mix starting to work its way in. you can see temperatures down in the low 40s in luray and winchester. get a little elevation, it is colder. we're at 46. when you factor in the winds, it only feels like 40 here. low 30s, it is colder under the rain and that wintry mix down in southern maryland and parts of the northern neck where they're seeing the sleet and this afternoon, temperatures not moving much. they'll be dropping to the low 40s by 9:00. weekend forecast in a few minutes. j.c.? >> thank you, howard. the white house it says that the man accused of firing an ak- 47 and striking the white house is making his first appearance in court today. he could be charged with attempted assassination. police caught up with the suspect on wednesday. he was found in the town of indiana, pennsylvania, in the central part of the state east of pittsburgh. danielle nottingham has more on the arrest and the investigation. >> reporter: the man suspected of opening fire on the white

house heads to federal court today. police arrested 21-year-old oscar ramiro ortega hernandez wednesday at a motel in pennsylvania after a four-day nationwide manhunt. investigators say ortega hernandez pulled his car within view of the white house friday night, then fired shots toward it from an aen can-47 style assault rifle. agents found one bullet that hit the exterior of the white house. a second bullet cracked a window on the upper floor. protective glass stopped it from going inside the first family's residence. >> the first and first lady were on their way to hawaii at the time of the shooting. their daughters sasha and malia were not with them. secret service officials won't comment on where the girls were when the shots were fired. investigators are looking into why ortega hernandez may have targeted the white house. law enfoacialt officials told the associated press it appears the suspect became obsessed

with the president and believes attacking the white house was part of a personal mission from god. monty mccall recently met ortega hernandez. he said the suspect compared to the president to the anti- christ. >> he seemed very sincere in what he believed but he did seem rather troubled. >> reporter: ortega hernandez could face charges of attempted assassination and possessing a dangerous weapon. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. this is not the first time that the white house has been targeted. in september of 1994, a maryland man crashed a stolen small plane on to the south lawn. and then seven weeks later, a colorado man opened fire with an assault rifle. spraying the front of the white house with up to 30 shots. well, there will be competing rallies today on the campus of virginia tech. one in fave every of expanding gun control. the other in favor of protecting gun rights.

of the group, virginia citizens defense league will be in blacksburg. they want the state to allow college students with permits to be allowed to have guns on campus. on the other side, survivors of the 2007 shooting rampage at virginia tech. that tragedy left 31 people dead. soon, you could be able to take your concealed weapon across state lines. house voted to make concealed weapon permits issued in one state valid in every other state which allows people to carry guns. however, the bill could face some tough opposition when it goes before the democratic controlled senate. the law would not affect washington, d.c. or illinois because they do not issue concealed carry permits. sky 9 was over the scene of a deadly crash involving a moped and a car in prince george's county. the crash happened just before 7:00 this morning on temper

hill road near mansfield manner drive. parts of both vehicles littered the road. the unidentified rider of the moped was killed. prince george's county police are still investigating. walmart is expected to bring hundreds of jobs when it builds six stores in washington, d.c. and one of those stores will be built in the skyline area of southeast washington. the area is marked with dozens of boarded up buildings and closed stores. unemployment in ward seven is just under 20%. the stores could create as many as 2400 jobs. walmart's general manager says high unemployment in the area is the main reason why bringing the stores to the skyline area is a great idea. >> i think it is a great location. we had to make the economics work and the financials work. but they will work.

very little things that republicans and democrats can agree on lately. but here's one. top executives at fannie mae and freddie mac should not be taking home multi-million dollar bonuses while the two companies are asking for billions of dollars in government bailout money! and congressman on both side vented their feelings at a hearing that was yesterday. >> made $9.3 million the last two years while the president made $800,000. do you think that's ok? >> you look at the salaries and one would say wait a minute! why don't we take the salaries and save a whole block. >> people that are required are highly skilled, sophisticated, seasoned people that have many, many opportunities for high- paying jobs. >> freddie mac ceo defended the bonuses saying that executives

that's because she's the daughter of great cab calloway. she's a retired teacher, also a medicare beneficiary. what a delight and honorary it is to have you with me. i'm so happy you're here. >> thank you. >> you want to let viewers know the importance about being concerned about medicare fraud. >> yes. >> that is important. >> this is very, very important. it is very important for seniors not to give out a lot of information about themselves, social security number, their medicare card, other things that people could use and really tap into their financial resources and into their health resources. so, it is very, very important to be cautious. >> that's right. and for seniors, steams they don't realize that they're giving the wrong information to the wrong person. so, we want to make sure our seniors are concerned about don't give that social security number out to anybody.

>> anyone! >> that's absolutely right. there are even some people who are going around from door-to- door, pretending that they can change your plan, do not! do not, do not give them any information! >> all right. the number again to call is... let's go to howard for the forecast. >> j.c., it a chilly one this afternoon. most of the rain showers are going to be over with for most of us. southern maryland, you're still dealing with it. a few sprinkles will come through from another band of showers and even maybe a wet snowflake. can't rule that out. we've already had it this morning. with our temperatures slowly creeping, maybe back to 48 here before the day is out, it is going to be a chilly one. winds northwest 10 to 15 gusting to 20 at times. they'll start to get lighter tonight. look at the temperatures. by 7:00, we're down to 44. by 9:00, we're down to 43. we're going into the 20s and low 30s by tomorrow morning.

rain showers last night. some areas got over an inch yesterday. we had the rain again yesterday with the mix. see the blues here, the snow, the pink, purples, rain/snow mix, maybe a little sleet. heavy stuff has been south and east of us. live doppler 9000 hd, we're still seeing some of the steadier rains east of town with sprinkles and flurries west of town. want to take you to southern maryland. it has been a wet, cool day down there. they're still dealing with the showers from charles county southward also from annapolis south and east and then out to the west, we're dealing with some of the showers coming out of the shenandoah valley. you might be seeing a couple of sprinkles. we're clearing out of the potomac river. the rest of charles county will be a little while there. here we are in the park. some sprinkles and flurries mixing in. the temperatures have been struggling all day. they're in the 40s. 39 now at pax river and tappahannock. feels like it is in the 30s to about 40 with the wind chill. that will be a problem for the rest of the afternoon. if you have to be outside,

watch out for that. the good news here is that i think we'll be pretty much over with most of the precip in the next couple of hours. blustery today. 20s and 30s tonight. winds will get lighter. tomorrow, not a bad day. a chilly one with lighter winds. saturday, we'll warm up in the 50s.
