wednesday, automatic spending cuts totaling $1.2 trillion would take effect beginning in 2013. it airs every sunday here on wusa9. thanks for hanging around and talking to us about this very important issue. if this super committee does not reach an agreement and they are triggered, what could it mean? >> in the near term, not a lot. they have an entire year to make good on the frustrations. it is not something that is as automatic as you would have it. everything on capitol hill has an escape clause built into it and also members who are saying that, you know, they are going to try to change that budget control act, which is what drove it. right now from the pentagon's perspective, they are planning on $450 billion in cuts over the coming e decade. the question is, if those $600
5:32 pm
billion in additional cuts come through in the first year, that would mean a $650 billion that the pentagon got a whack out of the budget on in 2013. that's the big challenge. no one knows where this will go and that is what makes it hard from the planning perspective. >> clearly a lot of uncertainty. this area is used to being in a bubble. because we are talking about government jobs and huge defense contracts, many of them housed in this area and there is some concern that we could be hit differently than say the rest of the country has starting back in 2008? >> exactly. this area gets about $22,000 a year from the pentagon on the per capita basis. the headquarters will go out here and at lot of general dynamics, as well as many thousands of much smaller contractors. if you are looking at cuts, which will involve cutting back on people and programs, cutting
5:33 pm
back on operation, then that will have a trickle down effect. and the question comes whether or not that kind of uncertainty will be driving people to, for example, forego a new home purchase or buying a new car, which then has a trickle down economic look. >> a lot of people are concerned about this. the pentagon is overstating what they could do to their ability to operate. but it sounds like you are saying that the pentagon is really worried about what could happen? >> i think that they are worried for us to make these large spending cuts. we have to take something out in a very major way. that's very lasting. cutting the right people and pay the severance package. that's complicating as well. >> yes. certainly the hope. thank you so much for your time. back to you. in the meantime, we are one week away from the busy holiday

5:36 pm
the road. >> that is the best and important thing to remember. >> all right, here we go. to gain an appreciation for this, they encouraged me to take the wheel of one of the large utility trucks without the tow plow behind. >> and now imagine it's in the middle of the night, you are blinded by snow and you're in a plow train, basically flying in formation. six trucks wide. the truck plow replaces at least two trucks in formation with one giant rig. and the advice, well, stay clear. two tow plows will be deployed in maryland this season in western counties along i-68 and also along i-70 from western maryland and all the way on through the howard county area. >> if we get snow in the metro area, then we could also redeploy these down to the central area. you just need to be careful. >> with the tow plow, scott broom, 9news now. >> okay, so it is really a tow plow? all right, i made a mistake. drivers are also warned to watch out for trucks in the
