bloody as police arrested 300 people many for trying to block city streets. >> police just stormed in and started grabs people and throwing people to the ground. >> reporter: the protests come just days after police cheered "occupy wall street" headquarters here in the park. the slight restrictions of no tents and sleeping bags demonstrators remain defiant. >> people better start listening because this is growing every day. >> reporter: that sentiment is felt across the country is. hundreds of activists marched through downtown los angeles thursday. they pitched tents in the middle of the street before police moved in. >> we are getting arrested because we're showing to the u.s. and l. a. and california the need for a change in this country. >> reporter: in chicago demonstrators jammed this bridge while police in oregon clashed with protestors outside a chase bank. there appears to be no end in sight for the two-month-old movement. occupy oakland is calling for another day of action tomorrow. terrell brown, cbs news, new york. >> here in d. c. it seems

planning pays off. >> more than 200 demonstrators marched through georgetown and then lined the key bridge with signs in hopes of spot lighting the country's crumbling infrastructures. police worried the group would create traffic nightmares but basically it all went down rather peacefully. on the virginia side only 1% of the 99% showed up for the rally. the congressional supercommittee is struggling to reach an agreement to trim $1.2 trillion from the federal deficit. it has a deadline of next wednesday. and if they fail to pass an agreement it would result in $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts and they start in 2013. it would be evenly divide between defense and nondefense spending. the man suspected of shooting at the white house now charged with trying to assassinate president obama. oscar ortega-hernandez went before a federal judge yesterday in pittsburgh. those who know ortega-hernandez

say he had become furious with the government and considered president obama to be the antichrist. >> he seemed very sincere in what he believed but he did seem very -- you know rather troubled. >> no word yet when officers will transfer ortega-hernandez to d. c. to face trial. as for last friday's incident, police say several bullets were fired at the white house including the upstairs living quarters. fortunately no one was hurt. the virginia tech campus was the scene of demonstrations both for and against guns. survivors of the campus massacre from several years ago rallied in fehr of a gun-free campus. meanwhile the progun virginia's defense league lobbied for carrying guns at the school. virginia tech's board of visitors is considering banning concealed weapons on campus. here's the other stories making news now. republicannable presidential candidate herman cain is now getting secret service protection. he was granted the extra security thursday following request from his campaign. he's the first republican to get that protection in the 2012

now stocks fell despite more evidence the job market is improving albeit slowly. the number of americans applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in seven months. that is a sign, layoffs are starting to ease. another big bank though is downsizing. swiss giant ubs plans to cut 2,000 jobs over the next five years as the exits or shrink several businesses in its investment banking unit. in all they are expected to announce 200,000 layoffs by the end of the year. more people plan to hit the road this year than last year. triple a says 42.5 million people are expected to travel this holiday. that's 4% more than last year and this is the highest number since the start of the recession. they're going to be paying more to do it too. the average price for a gallon of regular so far this month is $3.42 a gallon. up nearly 20% from last year. airlines are charging passengers for the food, for the drinks, for the baggage. but extra for the fuel?

hundreds of passengers traveling from india to britain were stranded for six hours in vienna when their airline flight stopped for fuel. the charter service asked the passengers to kick in more than $31,000 to fund the rest of the flight. to birmingham, england. >> is that legal? >> no. >> who does that? >> they're looking at ways to reimburse them, but can you believe it? okay if you don't pony up -- >> they actually were referring to this as ransom. the passengers say we were ransomed to get home for a flight we already paid for. >> does a charter flight not have credit they can fill up and pay them back? >> they're claiming the travel agents never gave them the money for the tickets in the first place. >> that's crap. soak the passengers. >> i just think of my little exxon -- my exxon thing you swipe. can you take this? >> easy fast.

look at the dew point, yesterday they were in the 40s. dropped some 30 degrees, the air is really dried out. the humidity at 43%. the barometer rising quickly. so yeah, it's the pain index is high today. we've got the jet stream dipping in the northwest. you can see all the unsettled weather sam lee rains, mountain snows coming in here to the pacific northwest and northern rockies. just then coming across the northern part of the country and taking a dip in the east. that zonal flow, that moves things quickly so the cold air is going to depart rather quickly. chilly air with us today as the high pressure builds in. the winds are going to calm down especially tonight. light and variable. another cold night. 20s to low 30s now tomorrow that high pulls away wind turn more south than southwesterly. so the morning chill will get out of here. lots of sunshine for saturday. by sunday though a few more clouds and might even get a stray sprinkle in here by saturday night, sunday morning

as that moisture returns. but generally looking like sunshine will give way to a couple more clouds on sunday. today we've got temps in the upper 40s to perhaps 50 in culpeper 45 in hagerstown and tonight a couple of high school football games out there. temperatures will be dropping from 40 at 6:00 to 37 at 8:00. clear skies but light winds and you can get tall scores later on at dc.highschoolsports.net. the forecast for the next three days we have temperatures today chilly. lighter winds tonight. 20s to low 30s. 64 sunday, a few more clouds and mainly a dry day. skins are home on sunday with a dallas weather should be okay. 64. monday a few more clouds, maybe a shower then 60. and then better chance that we'll see some rain here later on tuesday into the first part of wednesday. and then a chillier thanksgiving but sunny. should be good weather for the turkey bowl. high of 49.

beverly farmer working mornings and nights and working all the time. howard i tell you we're glad it is friday. and we kind of get a break as far as the roadways are concerned. this time of the morning picking tunnel construction barrels looking live at the traffic cameras the beltway route 7 tyson's where there had been roadwork each day overnight. that's out of the way. pulling the barrels out at 66 eastbound approaching the beltway. no early troubles northbound i- 95 heading out of fredericksburg stafford, on to quantico and into springfield. approaching the inbound 14th street bridge, all lanes open into town. just a few folks, gw parkway's been looking good. overnight construction had been on the inner loop of the beltway at colesville road in maryland right near colesville the rest of the paving operation. here at four corners things are looking good to get down to the beltway and should be pulling the barrels out. mike back to you. metro trains will not be running all weekend long on parts of the blue and yellow

line. crews are going to be doing track work on the king street and pentagon city stations which means crystal city, national airport and braddock road stations will be closed from 10:00 tonight until 5:00 a.m. when the system opens on monday. here's the question, do airport body scanners increase your risk of cancer? it's an ongoing debate in the u.s. but in europe it looks like they've picked a side. european officials are ordering airports to stop using the security scanners because of the possible cancer risks. u.s. radiation expert dr. david brinner says they can deliver up to 20 times more radiation than originally thought. but others call it an overreaction. >> than any risks you may have of cancer or even death from that particular machine. >> when i worked with radiation, and personally i wouldn't want to have to go through that in i have a choice. >> the eu will consider lifting the ban on the scanners if it gets convincing evidence

they're not safe. tomorrow morning, dozens of people will be lacing up their shoes and hitting the streets in olney for the run. it raises money for a living well cancer fund at the institute. >> it provides free acupuncture and wellness coaching to cancer patients. she died in 1996 from complications of cancer, but the 5 k was renamed bitta's run in her memory. the patients explain how it's helped them. >> in january i discovered that i had breast cancer. >> about a year ago last october, diagnosed with prostate cancer. >> i was diagnosed with stage iv colorectal cancer. such a rare type. about a year ago august 2010,

during my recuperation i found out i would have to stay on chemo for the better part of the unforeseen future. >> there were points where the pain from the toxic here was so bad i was like crawling to the bathroom. like i just could not stand up. >> when i first started this i was very depressed and didn't feel like this was something i wanted to deal with. >> i was searching for a way to move beyond my treatment you know to help me with my healing and the side effects of the chemo. the other medicines i take and just the pain and discomfort of cancer. >> just not clearly sticking needles in people but taking our time to know what it is they need on a body, mind spiritual level and incorporating that into treatment. >> it's not a cure all but really helps you like say they live well the fact that you have cancer. >> because it's a group setting, i really look forward to seeing the people. we come and we give each other hugs. we pray for each other. >> i think that our bodies have innate wisdom and when we ourselves know that our bodies

form of birth control. a new report shows u.s. birthed dropped for the third straight year and money worries are the reason. experts suspect it drove down rates in 2008 and 2009 as women put off having children. with the 2010 figures demographers say it's turned into a certainty. worms may unlock the mystery of how the skin heals itself. biologists at the university of california san diego have discovered some genes in worms which identify wounds and trigger chemical reactions that heal them. the finding could eventually lead to new wound treatments especially for diabetics and the elderly who have a harder time healing. eat up, cheese may not be as bad as for your cholesterol as other types of animal fat. scientists in denmark say people who eat cheese daily have lower so-called bad cholesterol than people who eat the same amounts of butter. they didn't increase their total cholesterol despite adding more fat the their diet.
