hell home. thank you very much for joining us. the deadline is looming for the congressional super committee. the team of six republicans and six democrats are in charge of creating a spending plan that both parties can support. danielle nottingham reports they have made very little progress. >> reporter: the super committee is just days away from its deadline to lay out a plan for slashing at least $1.2 trillion from the deficit. but it likes that plan may not be ready on time. democrats and republicans are back meeting in the same room after a nearly week-long

stalemate. congress created the supercommittee to end the fight over cutting the deficit during the debt ceiling debate. they are trying to find a way to slash the deficit over ten years that could pass both the house and senate. the committee members are facing big disagreements over well known stumbling blocks like whether it raise taxes and how to cut entitlement programs like social security, medicare and medicaid. each party argues it's the other side's fault. >> we are willing to meet their offer but it has to be in a way that is fair to working families. >> i am unaware of any offer or any idea from any democrat that did not include a minimum of a trillion dollars or more in tax increases. >> reporter: if the committee can't come up with a plan by wednesday the federal government faces a round of steep automatic spending cuts. almost every federal agency will have 10% slashed from its

budget. but those automatic cuts wouldn't start until 2013, making it unclear what congress will do next if there isn't a deal before thanksgiving. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. committee members will have to show how close or how far they are from a final deal on monday. that's when the debt ceiling deal requires them to make their final plan available to the public. oklahoma state university says that the women's baseball coach, curt budke, and the assistant coach, miranda serna were killed when their plane crashed in central arkansas. authorities say the two were on a recruiting trip when the accident occurred just west of little rock. the pilot and another passenger also died. two weeks after the scandal the penn state began allegations of sexual abuse at another big school has

surfaced. syracuse has put the men's basketball assistant coach on leave while police investigate. bernie fine has been the assistant coach for 35 years. espn reports he is accused of molesting a former ball boy at the school. that accuser is now 39 years old, and he tells espn that the abuse happened at the university. also at fine's home and on team road trips. the head basketball coach, says allegations were investigated back in 2005 but they were found to be untrue. the penn state's board of trustees has hired a large pittsburgh-based law firm to represent them in the sex abuse

scandal. they are work on the arrest of former football coach jerry sandusky as well as administrators tim curley and schultz. meanwhile, they continue to decide if changes are needed to prevent further incidents. overnight a bizarre videotape has surfaced of oscar ramiro ortega hernandez. he seems to have had a big problem with the government but wanted to work with oprah. >> you will see people like nostradamus talk about one male. >> reporter: it's the 48-minute rant on video. >> i am the perfect candidate to be casted on your show. >> reporter: he begs oprah winfrey for a job. he has a beef with the government and with president

obama. he believes he's jesus. >> i am the modern day jesus christ that you all have been waiting for. so i ask you, oprah, better yet i'm begging you, oprah, please cast me onto your show, oprah. >> reporter: ramon bailey agreed to video ortega on campus at idaho state university after they randomly met at the gym. >> my reaction is what is going on in this guy's head? obviously he is off his rocker. he is not there. >> reporter: court documents show ortega hernandez allegedly wanted to kill the president and insisted he wouldn't stop until it's done. secret service found nine shell casings, but two rounds hit the white house. one of which cracked the window of the first family's living quarters. but the president and the first lady weren't home. >> as we're coming as tourists, yeah, it makes you nervous. >> you don't like the fact that someone was able to get that close. >> reporter: police captured

ortega hernandez in pennsylvania. he appeared in a pittsburgh courtroom yesterday. he is awaiting extradition back to washington, d.c. surfaced ray championship. >> ortega hernandez faces life in prison for the attempted assassination of president obama. three people suffered minor injuries when a metro bus, an omnibus and a mini-van collided. this was the scene at 7:00 this morning at 19th treat and virginia avenue northwest. investigators are still trying to piece together exactly what happened. we are asking you to take some steps literally this weekend to help the homeless. jennifer far land is fannie mae's communications director. it is a delight to have you here with us. and let's talk about this important walk-athon that we're having down on the mall. >> it's a pleasure to be here. thanks for inviting me today. i will tell you what. tomorrow down on the national mall is the place to be. not only to help the homeless,

but to really kick off the thanksgiving holiday week. >> so many people, this is the time when we think about family and eating, and we don't sometimes think about the less fortunate. and in this particular area there are so many in need. >> it really truly is. here we are in the nation's capitol, but yet the crisis is right here in front of us. and so the numbers are pretty staggering. around 12,000 people just in this area alone are homeless on any given day. that's not counting the, you know, 1,000 families right here in the district of columbia of which 1 in 4 there is a child. >> that's the thing. and i have been involved with several organizations in the last couple of weeks doing feature reports on hero sent -- central about them, and the problem is they are losing funding and they are not getting the contributions they used to get because of the economy. and fannie mae has taken on

this problem of the homelessness to try to abate it and do away with it. >> and what's really great about this is that, you know, we've come in and we offer a program that allows you to really participate with the citizens of this community. you know, this really goes back, this is our 24th year. and it really started out something small. rock creek park. there was mr. about -- there was about 150 people that came together. the community has rallied. year after year they have come out, and they have come out strong. we have left rock creek park and now we're on the national mall. our numbers are good. before i came in i checked them out. we are close to 15,000 people have preregistered. >> and i'm going to be with you tomorrow morning. i am the emcee for the program. thank you for asking me, and the station is delighted to partner with you on this. let's be down at the mall tomorrow morning and fight homelessness in the metropolitan washington area.

there was foul play. >> reporter: the investigation into the drowning death 30 years ago of natalie wood is being reopened. and this morning the yacht captain on board the night she died is telling reporters he lied to investigators. dennis daven now place her husband, robert wagner, of his death. after a night of drinking heavily with actor christopher walker he says they had a fight shortly before she disappeared in the waters of catalina island. >> i didn't want my life to go by without having the truth come out. >> reporter: the coroner ruled the death a drowning accident in 1981. but the l.a. sheriffs has now decided to take another look. wood was 43 years old when she died. a three-time oscar nominee who starred in such classics adds miracle on 34th street, rebel without a cause, and west side

i'm feeling the pressure change. not in a good way, either. temperatures struggling to get out of the 40s. light winds. maybe southwesterly or so. tonight clear skies will drop into the upper 30s. there are going to be some areas by 6 or 7:00 that will be in the upper 30s. if you are going to one of those high school football games outside, consider that. overall, a decent weekend ahead. we have chilly nights in the 20s and 30s. some areas may be near 20 well north and west by tomorrow morning. milder tomorrow. i think we will get around 55. even warmer on sunday. we will be in the low 60s. if you have some of those outdoor chores to get done, you will still be able to work outside this weekend. northwesterly winds, look what happens when the warm air hits the waters. the air bubbles up. other streamers, snow streamers

going on in parts of new york and pennsylvania. still cold. low-to-mid 40s from the ohio valley all the way to the east coast. locally we're still 39 in hagueerstown. 32 in oakland. 45 now in fredericksburg. 44 southern maryland. 44 degrees with bright sunshine at reagan national. feels like 42-44 with the dew point at 18. not sure why that did an update with calm winds. humidity 35%. that may be the key to this. very, very, very dry. so any bit of moisture is going to evaporate and cool you off. jetstream is coming across the country almost west to east. it's bringing cold and snow and mountain. one to two foot totals over the

weekend. when you get this zonal negotiation things move quickly. high pressure building and the winds will be light. temperatures low 20s to low 30s will be the range. and then tomorrow as that high pulls away winds become more southerly. sunshine. mid 50s. ahead of this next system as we head into sunday even more of a push from the south and southwest. while there will be showers by sunday by noon into western maryland and pennsylvania, it should be fine. our rain chances will be going up next week and that could be impacting some travel plans tuesday and wednesday with thanksgiving coming up. today 47. chilly. tonight 20s and 30s, light wind. tomorrow winds turn to the south 5-10. 55. even warmer sunday with a few clouds and 54. tuesday and wednesday looks like a decent chance of rain coming in. if you have travel plans, sorry about that, but thursday looks good for thanksgiving right
