thank you for joining us, i'm j. c. hayward. we begin with new developments into the investigation of the sex scandal at penn state. the school's board of trustees has appointed former fbi director lewis free to investigate the response to child sex abuse allegations against former assistant coach jerry sandusky. manuel gallegos has more. >> reporter: former fbi director lewis free says he will lead a lengthy investigation into the child sex abuse scandal that is rocking penn state. >> we will make recommendations to the board of trustees which

will make sure we rectify environments at penn state that allowed anyone to hurt children with impunity. allegations are former football coach jerry sandusky abused boys during a several year period. >> we are committed to leaving no stone unturned, to get to the bottom of what happened. who knew what, when, and what changes must be made to ensure this doesn't happen again. >> reporter: the university's president and legendary coach joe paterno were fired. >> we will also thoroughly study, review and test all the university's policies, procedures, compliance and internal controls. >> the trustee's investigation is one of at least four underway, two of them criminals. >> reporter: no one is above scrutiny, including every number

of the administration of the university, every member our board of trustees, and every employee at penn state university. >> sandusky denies all the charges. he will be back in court december 7th for the first time since the scandal made headlines. manuel gallegos, cbs news. the alleged sex abuse happened in campus showers, both before and after sandusky retired. well it is now official. university of maryland president wallace lowe announced this morning that he is following recommendations from a special committee and he is cutting eight sports programs on campus. track, tennis and swimming are among the team's being eliminated. the president is attempting to close a $4.7 million deficit in the athletic budget. prince georges county police are blaming a clerical foul-up for the release of a murder suspect. 24-year-old frederick scott was mistakenly granted bond and let

out of jail earlier this month. scott is charged with murdering a man last march in he had mondayston, maryland. scott was arrested in may in las vegas, he was extradited to maryland, where he is being held on no bond status. police are now asking for the public's help in finding him. >> we are hoping with these broadcasts that we are sharing with you guys that maybe he sees these broadcasts, has a conscience to turn himself in, and realizing that this ising, you know a release that was accidental and hoping he, you know, would come back to face the charges that were brought against him. >> if you have any information on scott's whereabouts, prince georges county police would like for you to call them. the number is 1-866-411-tips. a 21-year-old man is under arrest in connection with a robbery on the campus of a university of maryland.

police say isaiah graham was arrested by george washington police on an unrelated charge. police believe graham and an accomplice put a knife to's student's throat outside a college park dormitory last week. the victim's credit cards were used at a nearby cvs. police are still looking for the second man. more than two dozen people are out of their homes in sterling, virginia. fire tore through an apartment building, on reserve falls terrace yesterday morning. two people were taken to the hospital, doctors say they should be okay. and a massive fire broke out today at the old basset furniture plant in basset, virginia. dispatchers first reported the flames around 1:30 this morning. the shooting flames and the loud explosions from the building woke up residents in the neighborhood. the flames could be seen almost 12 miles away. there are no reports of injuries. time is running out for the

so-called super committee appointed to cut $1.2 trillion from the federal budget. negotiators are expected to announce today that they have failed. danielle nottingham has the latest. >> reporter: lawmakers on the so-called super committee appear ready to declare defeat. >> nobody wants to give up hope. reality is, to some extent, starting to overtake hope. >> reporter: the six democrats and six republicans charged with cutting $1.2 trillion from the federal deficit were supposed to have a plan ready to show the public today. but so far, there is no deal. each party blames the other for the deadlock. democrats argue republicans insisted on making the bush era tax cuts permanent as part of the deal. a move they say would only benefit the wealthy. >> we are not a tax cutting committee. we are a deficit reduction committee. >> reporter: republicans insist

democrats were more focused on raising taxes instead of finding ways to cut medicare and medicaid, two big drivers of the debt. >> we are not going to tax our way out of this. we need to grow. and you can't grow if you raise taxes in the middle of a recession. >> reporter: congress created the super committee over the summer to end the debt ceiling standoff. talks broke off sunday. the group's real deadline for a plan is wednesday, but congressional rules say any proposal has to be ready 48 hours ahead of time. if the group makes no progress, steep spending cuts automatically kick in. virtually every federal agency will see 10% slashed from its budget in 2013. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. the cuts included slashing the pentagon's budget by $454 billion. it is a move that defense secretary leon panetta says would be devastating. faa investigators will be

determining what caused a small plane crash in calvert county, maryland. the single engine plane went down last night at the chesapeake ranch estate. a father and son made it out of the plane with only minor injuries. neighbors say the two were flying back from illinois and it appears the plane overshot the runway. >> the president of the university of california system is promising an investigation into a pepper spray incident on the campus of uc davis. students were sitting with locked arms when police released the spray. two police officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. we have a commuter alert now for motorists in maryland. by this time tomorrow the hinter county connector will be open from interstate 270 to interstate 95. the ride will be free for the first two weeks, and maryland's

welcome back on this monday afternoon. we are doing okay. lots of clouds today, spotty showers and breaks of sunshine earlier. temperatures shot into the lower 60s. they will be fading this afternoon with the spotty showers developing over the next few hours. by 7:00 you see down to 54. winds northeasterly. not bad, by 9:00, 52. we will have rain moving back tonight, tomorrow, tomorrow night and wednesday as well. it could pile up here a little bit over the next few days.

west to east that is how everything is moving this afternoon. you see the rain in pennsylvania. a few sprinkles trying to get going into west virginia and out toward garrett county where the fog was quite dense this morning. 60s south of town. fredericksburg 64. culpepper 64. 54 in winchester, only 51 north to 63 south. big rains and we are sitting in the low 60s here in washington and in easton. cloudy skies, light north northeast winds and the dew point has warmed into the upper 50s. with the north northeast wind a frontal boundary has sagged south of us. that is important, that is going to help the rains get going. one branch of the jet stream here. the more active branch seems to be the southern one. see how the weather is exploding here in west texas. showers and storms expand in the last six hours or so, along with another batch of rain from arkansas to tennessee, northern mississippi, all moving in our

direction. we are going to have several waves of energy and rain headed our way. the one last night that is now out in the atlantic ocean. that is now long gone. we are watching one right now passing to our north. other than the spotty hours for the afternoon, we are going to be in pretty good shape. the clouds around, the spotty showers for the afternoon, better chance in the mountains in pennsylvania. also look at this. northwestern north carolina southwestern virginia. we'll bring the rains in overnight. generally light stuff here, winds out of the north and east that drops us into the 40s with the rain. another batch of rain as we head into tomorrow midday across kentucky and had i highway. around here the light showers we are assist. but as this energy comes book, maybe heavy rainfall at times, starting late tomorrow. then on wednesday warm sayre going it shoot in here. we'll be back in the 60s but with the warm air wednesday that means the threat for thunderstorms mixing in as well. how much rain? some of the computer
