right now, president obama taking to the podium to talk about the supercommittee. >> spending over the next ten years. part of that law also required congress to reduce the deficit by an additional $1.2 trillion by the end of this year. in september, i sent them a detailed plan that would have gone above and beyond that goal. the plan that would reduce the deficit by $3 trillion by cutting spending, slowing the growth of medicare and medicaid and asking the wealthiest americans to pay their fair share. in addition to my plan, there were a number of other plans for them to consider from both democrats and republicans. all of which promoted a balanced approach. this kind of balanced approach to reducing our deficit.
5:45 pm
an approach where everybody gives a little bit and everybody does their fair share is supported by an overwelming majority of americans. democrats, independents, and republicans. it is supported by experts and economists from all across the political spectrum. and to their credit, many democrats in congress were willing to put politics aside and commit to reasonable adjustments that would have reduced the cost of medicare as long as there were part of a balanced approach. but despite the broad agreement that exists for such an approach, there are too many republicans in congress who have refused to listen to the voices of reason that are coming outside of washington. they continue to insist on protecting $100 billion worth of tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of americans at any cost. even if it means means deep
5:46 pm
cuts in medicare. at this point, they simply will not budge from that negotiating position. and so far, that refusal continues to be the main block for congress to reduce the deficit. now, we are not in the same situation we were in in august. there's no imminent threat to us defaulting on the debt that we owe and there are already $1 trillion worth of spending cuts that are locked in. and part of the law that i signed this summer stated that if congress could not reach an agreement on the deficit, there would be another $1.2 trillion of automatic cuts in 2013. divided equally between domestic spending and defense spending. one way or another, we will be trimming the deficit by a total of at least $2.2 trillion over the next ten years. that's going to happen. one way or another. we have $1 trillion locked in
5:47 pm
and either congress comes up with $1.2 trillion, which so far they failed to do, or the sequester kicks in and brings in an additional $1.2 in deficit reduction. the question is whether we can reduce the deficit in a way that helps the economy grow, that operates with a scalpel, not with a hatchet. already some in congress are trying to undue these automatic spending cuts. my message to them is simple. no. i will veto any effort to get rid of those automatic spending cuts to domestic and defense spending. there will be no easy offramps on this one. we need to keep the pressure up to compromise. not turn off the pressure. the only way these spending
5:48 pm
cuts will not take place is if congress gets back to work and agrees on a balanced plan to reduce the deficit by at least $1.2 trillion. that's exactly what they need to do. that's the job they promised to do. they still have a year to figure it out. although congress has not come to an agreement yet. nothing prevents them from coming up with an agreement in the days ahead. they can still come together around a balanced plan. i believe democrats are prepared to do so. my expectation is that there will be some republicans who are still interested in preventing the automatic cuts from taking place. and as i have from the beginning, i stand ready and willing to work with anybody that is ready to engage in that effort to create a balanced plan or deficit reduction. now in the meantime, we have a lot of work to do this year before congress leaves next month, we have to work together
5:49 pm
to cut taxes for workers and small business owners all across america. if we don't act, taxes will go up for every single american starting next year. i'm not about to let that happen. middle class americans can't afford to lose $1,000 next year because congress won't act. i can only hope that members of congress who have been fighting so hard to protect tax breaks for the wealthy will fight justice to protect tax breaks for small business owners and middle class families. we still need to put construction workers back on the job rebuilding our roads and our bridges. we still need to put our teachers back in the classroom educating our kids. so when everybody gets back from thanksgiving, it's time to get work done for the american people. all around the country, americans are working hard to live within their means and meet the responsibilities and i know they expect washington to do the same.
5:50 pm
thanks. >> and that was the president speaking about the super committee's failure to reach a deal. saying there's no imminent threat right now, but he says he will veto any effort by congress to get rid of these automatic spending cuts which were triggered if they weren't able to reach an agreement. there were no easy offramps. congress needs to get to work to make those $1.2 trillion in cuts to the deficit. >> let's go over to top we are a look at the forecast. >> here's the deal. you need your umbrella for the next 36 hours. look at live doppler 9,000. nothing is heavy, but we have light rain up 270 and also down 95. temperatures are still pretty nice. i mean, low 50s. 53 in bethesda. 53 in arlington. 52 toward college park. 50 up in rockville and you go further north of that, you're in the upper 40s. an umbrella is still needed. nothing heavy.

injury and how long can we expect him to be out? >> if people don't know what grade one is, they were relieved they thought it could have been a lot worse. he is going to go this week. i'll have to say. it's 50/50 at this point. >> and brian, trent injured this same knee last season and he was hurt earlier. at this point with no post season to play for, should they shut him down for the rest of the season? >> i see no reason to put him out there. if he's not 100%, let him get an opportunity to play. >> and the. attorney c: you are to trent injury -- as a former runningback, what has gone on with this offense in the run game? it's pretty much nonexistent. what is happening? >> right now they don't seem to be getting it done. my opinion would be that it's because they aren't sticking to it. not giving them enough opportunity and you can't run the football. >> no run game on the offense.

but the rest is solid. he was 25 of 38. 289 yards and two touchdowns. david, what impressed you most about his performance? >> in some ways that he came back from a bad start. impressive. he did it without a running game and if trent williams doesn't play, goes back and starts the next play. >> what impressed you? >> i think the fact that he stuck with his game. he didn't get rattled. he stayed and late in the game he took chances. rex grossman has a lot of confidence in himself. sometimes it gets him in trouble, but yesterday it paid off. >> time to get your grades on their performance from yesterday. we have seen a lot of x's on the board. i have a feeling we aren't going to see a lot of those today. a little better today. how do you grade them? >> b minus. the offensive game was really good. i say a minus, so buy minus.

>> c plus, because they didn't have a running game. you have to have a running game in football. >> passing grades, defense david. >> defense was pretty solid. the cowboys didn't run the ball. three touchdown passes, but sacked four times, pressured a lot. >> you look at it, no turnovers for the defense yesterday. they had some big plays. they gave up big plays and guys that play so bad,. >> real quick, coaching. >> you know, brian isn't going to like this one, but i gave shanahan a b because i came from 10-0 down. and stayed in the game the whole way. time out at the end was a bad move. >> obviously -- wow. they have these guys to come back and play football. in a game we wanted to see them give a good effort. they hadn't done that the week before. >> thanks guys for being here. they'll join me on thursday to look ahead to seattle. i'm kristen. lesli, back to you. this is 9news now.

>> total and complete failure. the congressional supercommittee that was supposed to figure out how to cut at least $1.2 trillion out of the deficit announced just over an hour ago that it was unable to reach any kind of bipartisan agreement. months of work and today's six republicans and six democrats gave up. bruce leshan is here with the fallout. >> fast breaking story. this announcement an hour ago. the president just spoke. and if he is going to run for reelection against the do nothing congress, well he just got a big opening here. >> the agreement that exists for such an approach. there are too many republicans in congress who have refused to listen to the voices of reason and compromise. >> markets and in the accounts of people who are lucky enough to have stocks and mutual funds for their retirement, the dow was off almost 250 points.

democrats and republicans have a fundamental divide on taxes and entitlements and politicians just seem unable to bridge it. >> committee members were still trying at the last minute for some kind of breakthrough. but it had been clear for days that the divide was just too deep. >> they think they are going to win the senate, win the presidency, and they want to wait until next year to write their own deal. >> on the other side, we have a trillion dollar tax increase. >> republicans unwilling to accept tax increases and democrats unwilling to reform medicare, medicaid, and social security without them. >> there will be deficit reduction, it's just that it won't be done through what the committee might have recommended. >> failure triggers frustration. 10% cuts to all government programs. except entitlements like medicare and social security. about half the cuts
