named occupy the highway. >> their arrival in washington was planned to coincide with an announcement by the congressional deficit subcommittee on possible cuts and possible tax increases. organizers say the failure of the subcommittee to reach a deal only strengthens the belief that congress is not addressing the concerns of the struggling everyday american. some scary moments at the occupy protest in houston, texas, when a gunman was seen walking with a rifle near the square where protestors are camped out. there are reports he fired one shot into the air before police shot him in the ankle and took him into custody. no word if there was a a random incident or if the gunman was targeting the antiwall street protestors. the. the fallout from the eper spraying incident on the u.c. campus continues. the police chief is also on administrative leave. last friday, occupy wall street protestors were holding a demonstration on campus when university police in riot gear ordered them to leave. the protestors responded by

linking arms and then sitting. that's when a police officer started spraying them in the face with a large stream of pepper spray. the video of the spraying has been all over the internet and is lead the cause for the university president to resign. so far, she's refused to do so. in new york city, journalists covering the occupy wall street there say police officers are preventing them from doing their jobs. they say new york city police blocked journalists were witnessing the removal of protestors were the occupy camp in lower manhattan zuccotti park last week. they also say officers used force and arrested some journalists who were simply covering the event. >> protestors in egypt are calling for a large scale demonstration today and they're calling it national salvation. for days, thousands of demonstrators have packed tahrir square to protest egypt's military rung the government now. so far, more than two dozen people have been killed. 1700 wounded in the clashes with police. the parents of murdered british teenager millie dollar

were the first to testify in a london hearing into the news of the world phone hacking scandal. they described how journalists at rupert murdoch's paper broke into their daughter's voice mail to try to get the scoop on the story giving them false hope she was alive. hugh grant also testified about media outlets invading his privacy. >> back here in our region, the university of maryland could have soon one of the smallest athletic departments in the atlantic coast conference. >> unless eight of the university's eight teams can raise $30 million to keep from getting the ax. yesterday, the school's president announced his decision to get rid of swimming and diving, women's water polo and acrobatics, men's tennis and men's track. he said it was purely a cost saving decision to pull the school out of its growing deficit. only maryland's basketball and football programs bring in renew which helps fund all of the other programs but it is not enough money to keep the other it teams viable. >> i want to make it very clear

jessica is here to help us figure it out. >> you have a little less money if you were investing in wall street. >> stocks plunged after talks to slash the deficit and investors continued to worry about yowrp's debt problems. we're seeing some signs of recovery this morning with rallies in asia and europe and checking the numbers here at home, the dow stands at 11,547, it is back in negative territory for the year now after we drop 249 points. that actually was good because we were off 300 points or more in trading yesterday. the nasdaq slipped 49 points and the s&p 500 lost 22. the special congressional bipartisan subcommittee failed to come up with an agreement to cut $1.2 trillion in deficits over the next decade. that means automatic spending reductions across the board starting in 2013. for its part, ratings agency s&p says it will not cut the nation's credit rate based on the failure of the subcommittee to reach a deal. the court-appointed trustee

overseeing mf's bankruptcy, up to $1.2 billion is missing from customer's accounts, that's double the amount the firm reported to regulators last month. federal officials are investigating whether mf global tapped client's account as its own financial conditions worsened. the company would belly up on bad investments in europe. it was run by former new jersey governor jon corzine. hire an unemployed veteran? get a tax break. president obama siped a new law that does just that. the measure creates tax breaks for companies that hire jobless vets. it also helps vets get job training and counseling. the president says the measure could help about 850,000 unemployed veterans and tens of thousands more when they return from iraqi and afghanistan in the next few months. >> passengers paying more to fly this thanksgiving than last year. ticket prices are up an average of 6% for round trip flights during the thanksgiving holiday as airlines reduce their available seats.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. 4:45. a new day but the same kind of soggy focus we had yesterday. >> in fact, we're going to see more rain as we get into the afternoon and evening hours. not that you've seen enough. some of the rain could be

heavy, especially in the northern suburbs as opposed to the southern suburbs. as we head into tonight, we may see a few thunderstorms in there for good measure. here is a look at the visibilities to start. yesterday, we had some fog, not as widespread this morning. we've got areas from gaithersburg down to dulles. could cause a few delays taking off this morning. winchester, 3/4 of a mile or less. western maryland, quarter mile at oakland. again, the visibility is not nearly as bad as they were yesterday. here is a look at the bus stop forecast. for many, this is the last full day of the week. we've got light showers, drizzle and fog. mid-40s to mid-50s with your sunrise at 6:57. as far as today is concerned, it will be another damp, dreary day. 53 degrees at 8:00. we'll slowly climb on the heels of the easterly winds into the mid 50s with a better chance of steadier, heavier rains. 56 by 4:00 p.m. temperatures look like they'll be climbing this evening. maybe into the low 60s overnight into tomorrow morning.

as winds turn more toward the south. we're seeing showers overnight into the morning hours. this is all moving again west to east. extending from areas in east central pennsylvania, northern jersey all the way down to norfolk and out west, into parts of ohio and kentucky. look at this on the ohio river, how the moisture is expanding northward there across kentucky and southern ohio. this is going to be building toward us. live doppler 9000 hd, few sprinkles around front royal this morning but the bulk of the rain said we've been watching south and east of town from d.c. into calvert county and into eastern st. mary's county over toward easton on the eastern shore, annapolis seeing some and from bowie east there on route 50 coming out of the beltway. you can see on the south side of town here coming down 39 a to arlington, shirlington, land ham and -- lanham and bowie seeing the moderate rain showers as well. let's talk temperatures, mid- 50s south to the mid-40s north

with 50 here in washington. northeast winds at 7. visibility, 3 miles. if you're traveling today, across the region, pretty good chance you run into rain or thunderstorms here. boston looks good and down to the outer banks looks good. down in atlanta, storm, 78. chicago, rain and 45. all thanks to this system that's coming out of the central plains, central mississippi valley. rain in arkansas and missouri moving into southern illinois. this is going to throw moisture our way later today, tonight into early on wednesday but then it will clear the region and thanksgiving and really the next four days or so look really nice. rain today, 56. tonight into tomorrow, showers and storms. we'll climb into the low 60s. cool off in the afternoon. winds on wednesday could gust to 25, 30 miles per hour. a pleasant thanksgiving with highs in the upper 50s. look at friday, saturday and sunday, very nice. temps in the 60s. could be rain or thunder by monday, back in the 50s.

bridge. no early troubles to report. mike, andrea, back to you. dominion virginia is restarting its second nuclear reactor at the north power plant. unit two is about 7% power. >> both reactors at the plant shut down after the august earthquake near louis louisa county. they were kept off-line until november 11th could inspections could be completed. unit one reached full power on friday. fewer americans seem to be dying of oral cancer. >> a new study shows from 1993 to 2000, death rates declined among u.s. patient with cancer of the mouth and larynx. researchers at emery university and the american cancer society say the lower death rates may be connected to changing attitudes about smoking and sexual behavior. >> there is a possible new affirmative for patients with the common precancerous

lesions. laser removal iser successful. surgery isn't always feasible when there are large lesions in places like the head and the neck. they say the laser removal may be better for those areas. >> emergency room visits involving energy drinks have skyrocketed in the past few years. a report found visits to the e.r. have increased ten foalt in recent years as the energy drinks became more popular. researchers say half of the patients who visited the hospital combined the energy drinks with alcohol or drugs. the drinks contain high amounts of stimulants including caffeine and too much can lead to heart arrhythmias and dehydration. >> acne is one of the most common skin conditions and many people take antibiotics to clear it up. >> a new study shows taking acne drug is associated with another common health problem. manuel gallegus explains. >> it looks like it is really doing a great job. >> 36-year-old diane has been battling acne for years. >> when there isn't a bad flare-

up, oral antibiotics tend to go to the root of the problem and takes care of it quickly. >> a new study shows the antibiotics could lead to another common health problem. a sore throat. university of pennsylvania researchers looked at a group of college students and found those taking oral antibiotics got sore throats more often. >> of the patients were three times more likely to have an episode of laryngitis. they complained of a sore threat while taking the antibiotic. >> about 40 to 50 million americans have acne at some point in their lives. in some of the cases, oral medication is the only thing that works. researchers aren't sure exactly why people in the study on antibiotics had more sore throats. >> patients are told to take the antibiotic on an empty stomach but if it they're sensitive to reflux, they should be taking the antibiotic with food. >> doctors also recommend drinking a lot of water with medications. >> your skin is looking beautiful. >> she uses a combination of topical and oral antibiotics and she does her best to take care of her skin.

robin gibb is said to be losing his battle with liver cancer. the 61-year-old singer was rushed to the hospital last week. he was diagnosed with liver cancer several months ago. new york city rolls out the red carpet for a new martin scorsese film. >> we have a look at entertainment. >> reporter: director martin scorsese joined the stars of his new film, hugo for the world premiere in new york city last night. >> this is my cousin from the country, hugo. >> hugo is adapted from the ildesperated book the invention of hugo, about a 12-year-old orphan who secretly lives in a paris train station in the 1930s and minds the clock. hugo is the still maker's first 3-d movie. >> i sort of tried to take the audience and put them inside that -- the train station, where the film takes place in. sort of make you feel you're part of it in a way.
