. a traffic alert. nasty weather may impact your travel plans for turkey time. topper is tracking conditions across the country. plus, claim your cash. millions of dollars are waiting to be claimed. just watch for your name all through the newscast. i'm 15 years old and i spent 14 years in the neighborhood. >> but first tonight local families unexpectedly homeless for the holidays. this is 9news now. a home filled with the ah-roma of roasting tur -- aroma of roasting turkey. >> it has been months since hundreds of residents at the mobile home park in woodbridge have been able to enjoy the simple pleasures. a brutal storm routed them out of their home and tonight many of them are without a place to call home and with the holidays upon them they're looking for

reasons to be thankful. ken molestina is live with the story. ken. >> reporter: well, derek, take a look around me. this is all that remains here at the holly acres mobile home park. this is a place where all these folks used to call home. and now it's nothing but mud and debris left here. tropical storm lee ripped through here september 8th and it turned hundreds of lives upside down. and now those people are wondering what the future holds for them. hundreds of displaced holly acres residents were treated it a thanksgiving dinner in woodbridge on tuesday night. for many of them, the pain and heartache of not having a home is still raw and clear. >> what's been the hardest part about being displaced. [ speaking foreign language ] >> e says every day since the storm hit it's been a struggle. tropical storm lee flooded out the mobile home park and left it uninhabit tabl.

limited resources available to them and with what few things they could grab, these families were forced into shelters. >> it's like really hard to be around everyone else because we had to move on with our lives and be with people we don't even know. >> reporter: a teary eyed woman says feeling thankful is hard to do since they have been down on their luck. a board appealed a ruling for rebuilding the property. the uncertainty has created a wish. >> for all of us to be back together again. it's really sad to see everyone go their own ways when we were all together at the same time. >> reporter: the ruling by the county stands, it will allow the owner of the property to rebuild on it. i'll tell you something. those folks that i spoke with earlier today told me after they were sent over to the shelters they were forced to live with their families and friends because the shelters closed down. tonight the holidays are among us and they still have no place

to call home. we're live in woodbridge, ken molestina, 9news now. republican presidential candidates just finished a foreign policy debate at constitution hall, but gary nurenberg reports domestic budget troubles quickly began to dominate the conversation. he is here now with some highlights. gary. >> well, derek, some candidates said the economy here at home is the number one national security issue facing the country and those domestic issues soon became intertwined with questions about what the country should do in its international relations. they may not agree on everything, but all took the time to say variations of this. >> as a result of this administration, our national security has, indeed, been downgraded. >> if you like what barack obama has done to our economy, you'll love what he's done to our national security. >> i'm afraid that he's taking us on a perilous course. >> one thing we know about barack obama, he has essentially handed over our terrorists to the aclu. >> reporter: as the debate

progressed. >> it seems like nobody cares about the budget. we're in big trouble and nobody wants to cut anything. the biggest threat to our national security is our financial condition. >> reporter: with the financial security, big cuts are it where en into the law. they will be damaging. >> if leon is an honorable man, he should resign and protest. >> reporter: newt gingrich. >> i don't see how the party that says it's the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here for a quarter of a century. >> i think the patriot act is unpatriotic because it undermines our liberty. >> i don't want a law that says after we lose a major american city we're sure going to come and find you. i want a law that says you try to take out an american city, we're going to stop you. couple names we put up. it was rick perry who said leon should resign and ron paul who said the patriot act is unpatriotic. interested comments on how to pull troops from iraq and the role of foreign aid. candidates who seemed well informed on major policy issues with no major debate blowup. derek and anita. >> thanks for the update. demonstrators from dc occupy movement made their way to outside constitution hall tonight. they left and marched along 17th street northwest. dc police were on hand to make sure the protestors did not cause any problems with traffic along the way. surprisingly, they didn't stay long and head back to their camp shortly after the march. prosecutors have released some of the surveillance footage they used against former prince george's county executive jack johnson. he pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of extortion,

witness and evidence tampering. one video clip shows johnson accepting $1,500 in cash from a developer. they say all total, he took as much as 1 million in bribes. if prosecutors get their way, johnson will serve a lengthy jail sentence for it. they're asking the judge give johnson 14 years in prison. johnson's wife lesli also, of course, caught up in the case. she faces up to 18 months behind bars. well, tonight a local college student and two other americans are in egyptian police custody accused of throwing fire bombs at security forces fighting with protestors. police arrested 19-year-old derek sweeny, 21-year-old lou gates and gregory porter. all three men are studying a semester abroad at the american university in kiro. his mom says her son is an idealist who got caught up in the pro-democracy movement still

sweeping that country. >> being peaceful negotiations, peaceful discussions. so that's why we just have a hard time believing that he would be part of anything violent. >> well, last spring he interned for missouri congressman whose office called him a great worker and a real good kid. the congressman has been in touch with the state department trying to help secure his release. it is unclear as of now what, if any, charges those three americans are facing. a bank robbery last friday, an armed carjacking saturday, another bank robbery just this afternoon. police suspect it is all the work of just one woman on a crime spree across northern virginia. she is 26-year-old stephanie schwab and police want to hear from anybody who knows where she may be right now. the car swiped in the carjacking in tyson corner. >> this individual could be

dangerous. these were two rather high profile violent crimes that were committed. >> schwab report edly left her manassas home when she was 12 years old. court records show she has had plenty of run ins with the police. the so-called east coast rapist will be heading back to virginia. prince william county paul ebert petitioned to have him return to the commonwealth where he faces potential life sentence. this is aaron thomas and he is being held in kentucky where he pleaded -- connecticut where he pleaded guilty to a rape in 2007. dna evidence shows he's responsible for rapes and other attacks on 17 women from virginia to connecticut. now to an update on the story we've been following out of fort diederich maryland. it's all about a chemical release when crews drilled a well at a well last week. according to the attorney there, the chemical was a substance known as pce. it's often used in dry cleaning

and levels are non-hazardous. they stopped drilling and closed up after they smelled an order. the full intercounty connector is now open to traffic. the icc is supposed to save you time, but we wanted to see just how much time it might save so we did a little test drive of our own earlier tonight. it's still raining and traffic is just as bad as it could be, but the icc section of the road i was doing 60 miles an hour and that's what is making the difference. >> i can say i'll have to admit i'm a glass half full girl, but i'm a little tired at this point. the glimmer of hope, we're about 15 miles away from vwy and at this rate about 20 miles an hour we'll be there in about a half-hour. >> they both left montgomery mall headed for bwi airport during the rush hour.

scott took the icc, delia took the beltway and here are the results. driving 43 miles and only going about an average of 27 miles an hour, scott made it to the airport in just over 90 minutes. now, while delia only had to drive 37 miles, it took her about two hours to get there. on top of that, she was only averaging about 18 miles per hour. hopefully when you get your ride on the icc, you will have better results. well, by this time tomorrow night, millions of people will be on the road or even at their final thanksgiving destination which means many of you will be behind the wheel at the crack of dawn. let's hope with the traffic here is a few alternate routes. if you're heading north you can avoid i95 in maryland by taking the parkway to 695. from there head towards 83 to i81 to pennsylvania and from that point you can jump on to i78 and that will take you up to new jersey. if you want to avoid the delaware toll plaza, just take 95 north to route 279 towards newark and then make a right on

the search is under way for a mysterious man who left a suitcase full of money in an italian restaurant, and we're talking a lot of cash. police in sidney, australia, say a man in surfing shorts became spooked and left behind nearly a million dollars. >> went to go walk out, put his hands into a woman's bag, there was a couple sitting there, apparently a couple that haven't been here before, and they either pulled something out or put something in and then walked out. >> weird. reports say the suitcase contained 1 million australian dollars. the owner nowhere to be found. well, just a couple of days until the holiday season kicks into high gear. >> that's right. lesli foster brought you some exclusive deals and tonight she has more way to get in on the big deal reveal. >> reporter: in tonight's big deal reveal, we help you plot out your shopping plan of attack. now, this year black friday is more like black thursday. so let's do a quick run through of who opens when. on thanksgiving k-mart opens

their doors for the beginning of the black friday shopping ritual. but for the first time some folks are pushing back asking why should stores open at midnight on thanksgiving? derek says good luck with that. >> yes, anita, do you know what, this is capitalism at its magnificent and horrific bet. you open yours at 4:00 a.m., i'll open mine at 2:00. anything to get to the customers first. target, macy's, best buy, kohl's, all opening at midnight. wal-mart will open at 10:00 p.m. toys "r" us will open at 9:00 p.m. on thanksgiving day. it's retail competition. it's the american way. now, 190,000 people did sign a petition that respect the bird thing asking target to back off for the sake of its workers. but what's that compared to the 152 million expected holiday shoppers? wages are down, money is tight. many of us can't shop like we used to, so we have the sense of scarcity. the bargains feel a bit more

crucial than they used to, and nobody wants to be the next guy in line watching the last $200 flat screen walk out the door. but should christmas really be a contact sport? do you really think the xbox will never go on sale again? and how much dignity would you sacrafice to get 75% off the shoes. that is the problem with unbrideled capitalism. money always talks, but sometimes there's just nobody listening. when some of us begin to ask do you think maybe this thing is starting to get out of hand. anita, maybe? >> maybe a little bit. however, what i want to know is how does an extra thousand sound right now? that is the average payout that might belong to you. the funds come from insurance policies, forgotten bank accounts, the number of people in our area that have cashed a claim and we have the names. let's begin in virginia.

some thunderstorms through the metro area late tonight and very, very early on wednesday. but for the most part, we're kind of in a lull right now. we've been in a lull for a few hours. there is a little drizzle, that's about it. this is the activity. that's thunderstorms running through west virginia and pushing through southwestern virginia as well as western north carolina. we'll zoom in. we have plenty of clouds. i think once the line grows through, we'll see some breaks in the clouds before the showers redevelop in the afternoon. live doppler 9000. mainly light activity up to 70 towards frederick and into hagerstown. a little bit of heavier activity up towards the border but that is about it. i think if you go through tonight, that's going to start to fill in. warmer in the morning. don't let that fool you. all right. so the winds are really going to be picking up both morning and afternoon. afternoon showers will develop again. there will be some sun in between. and it will turn cooler late in the day. so grab a coat before you head out. thanksgiving still looks great. temperatures about average in the mid to upper 50s.

all right. here is our future cast. by 5:30 in the morning, most of the showers soit and east of town -- south and east of town. roads will still be wet. we get some break in the clouds around lunch time. we get a little mixed precipitation west of the divide. then the second wave of showers come in, and this is when the winds really begin to pick up and the temperatures start to fall. we'll clear out quickly tomorrow night with temperatures going back in the 30s and winds tomorrow could gust to excess of 30 miles an hour. overnight breezy and milder. some rain. maybe some thunderstorms. zero blanket night because temps are rising. in some areas they're already in the low 60s which is the high so far for today. tomorrow rain and showers ending. grab a coat, though. you won't think you need it but you will. 50s and 60s. and then by afternoon becoming partly sunny, windy and colder but more showers develop. high temperatures between 60-65.

winds west, northwest 15-25. rain out in the northwest in southern california but nice in the midwest, windy in the midwest and great lakes and we have some leftover showers in the mid-atlantic and rain in new england. but for the most part, that is a pretty easy travel day. no arctic heirs. no big snows. we'll break it down. 50s and 60s in the morning. rain showers ending. a break in the clouds at noon. some more showers are winding up at 5:00 p.m. cooling temperatures back in the 50s. gorgeous on thanksgiving. upper 50. and then look at the weekend, friday, saturday and sunday we're in the upper 60s on saturday. that's ridiculous. but we'll take it. maybe a shower on monday. a much better chance for some showers and some rain. a little cooler as we get into tuesday and back into the low 50s. i tweeted about this. i saw night crawlers on the driveway. those are the worms. >> yes. when you see those, nothing serious in winter weather is coming soon. they should not be out now. >> good news. >> good news for some. kristin.
