toward springfield. your next check of timesaver traffic comes up at 6:11. back to you. thanksgiving travel rush truly gets underway today and the best time to leave may be right now. aaa says 38 million people will drive 50 miles or more this thanksgiving which is up 4% from last year. the worst time to drive op the roads out of our region is this afternoon and this evening. so, if you can't leave this morning, you might want to wait until tonight instead. it will be just as bad sunday when most people start to come back into the region. >> making the drive more painful, we have higher gas prices. >> our region is up 50 cents from last year. let's get a quick check on what the prices are. >> in upper marlboro, maryland, regular grade gas averages $3.27. warrenton, $3.28. >> reston, expect to pay $3.44 a gallon. >> how about germantown, maryland. $3.40 a gallon. >> nearly a million people will

take a train or bus to their thanksgiving destination. today is one of the busiest for amtrak and the whole year. it is asking passengers to arrive at the station early and remember there is a two-bag carry-on limit. if you're taking a bus out of town, most of the discount buses now leave from inside union station so that will add to the crowds. signs will point you to your gate. >> you can expect the region's airports to be pretty busy today, too. everyone going to the airport to pick someone up counts, too. >> i think things are picking up, surae. >> reporter: you know, it is still kind of quiet. this would be the time to get here if you are picking up someone or if you are traveling. but it depends obviously on your ticket. yes, a million people from washington will be traveling and a bunch will be coming through reagan national. we have lon anderson, aaa. let's talk about that high gas prices, higher airfare but still, people are going to be flying. >> that's right. >> you know, we're projecting airfare up this year about 20%

but even so, we're also projecting an increase in airline travelers about 1.4%. so, for the washington metropolitan area, that amounts to about 75,000 air travelers, just from the washington metropolitan area alone heading out of town for thanksgiving. that's a bunch. >> people have forgone their trips in the last year or two so that's maybe why we're seeing the uptick? >> we think so. i think it is pent up demand. the economy's bad. i'm not travelling this year. this year, we've seen some improvement in the economy. apparently enough to get a lot of people to say i'm going this year in spite of higher gas prices, in spite of higher airline prices, i'm traveling. >> we have weather to talk about. i just checked the boards. a couple of cancellations and delays but still, what is your advice as people come here to the airport? >> well, certainly, check before you leave. make sure you know what your airline is doing. but get here early because the lines, while they're not big now, they're going to be big later and if you miss your

school bus carrying the girl's basketball team from great mills high school. 20 people were taken to the hospital. 15 were students. none of the injuries was serious. the whole thing is still under investigation. the state department hopes to get to talk with three american college students arrested in egypt. one of the three is a student at georgetown. 19-year-old derek sweeney is on the right side in this picture. he was arrested tuesday, accused of throwing molotov cocktails during protests against egypt's military leaders. sweeney is from missouri and his mother says her son is passionate about democracy but is also a passivist. >> very out of character for him is any violence against another person. he would never do anything to hurt anyone. >> that's why we don't believe he did anything like that. >> that's why we don't believe it. >> the clashes in egypt are in their fifth day. there were street battles near tahrir square overnight. 38 protestors have been killed in the last week. a free thanksgiving dinner for hundreds of people at holly acres trailer park, the ones

our current temps are still warm. 64 down in southern maryland. we dipped into the 50s with some 40s winchester and cumberland. also a touch of fog facing leesburg, hagerstown. annapolis reported half-mile visibility. reagan national is 56 with good visibility. out to the west, a few showers, charleston lingering. heavier rains to the east coming from new york and philly especially this morning in virginia beach. west of us, detroit, chicago, atlanta, for much of the country looks pretty good. once we get rid of the storm system. there is another one in the pacific northwest. so, after this passes us, we're in good shape for about four days or so. today, 64, we'll try to get there midday and drop in the afternoon with another round of showers this afternoon and this evening. 30s tonight. 57 tomorrow and nice thanksgiving. friday, 64. even nicer. looks great over the weekend with temps in the 60s.

moving. they're headed around the big curve past the merge with the 27 it 0 spur. before you get to river road is where the tractor trailer crash is. one lane squeezing by to the left. this impacts inbound 270 to head toward the american legion bridge. the good news is the crash on the inner loop of the baltimore washington parkway is out of the way. still lined up out of college park. northbound bw parkway, they're dealing with a crash. southbound near 193, greenbelt, dealing with a crash. delays across the occoquan. with all lanes open on to 395, inner loop at telegraph road, crashes on the right lane coming out of oxon hill through alexandria. i-95 heading south down toward richmond. northbound heading up past baltimore through the tunnels making your way north through delaware. the i-70, 68 corridor checks in all right. allow the extra time for the rain and the patience for this

>> very simple. we take all of our ingredients and add it to water which is peppercorns, clove, chili pepper, a little garlic, some spices, bay leaf, a little bit of cinnamon stick and then of course, sugar and salt. the brown sugar helps with the browning and then you bring that to a boil and then you're going to let it cool down and soak your turkey inside the brine. >> how long does it stay in the prine? >> pretty much the rule of thumb is for every -- about for 12 to 14 pound turkey, about eight to ten hours. if you're doing just breast or leg, you do about 45 minutes for every eight ounces. >> ok. >> you have your brine, bring it to a boil and cool it down. >> ok. next step? >> when the brine isel cooled, you'll basically put it into a bowl and cover your turkey inside the prine and keep it in the refrigerator. we use the debone leg and thigh.
