thank you for joining us, you'll j.c. hayward. we're going to take a look at traffic conditions but figg, let's get to howard. >> a storm front went through a couple of hours ago. we have winds gusting in spots over 50 miles per hour this afternoon. we still have some rain to deal with. see some of the heavy rains we got last night. some areas had over an inch and a half of rain. now, a lot of it is offshore, quite a snow going on in northern new england. behind the system, you see some of the lingers showers in pennsylvania and the mountains, expect some of that to be coming through this afternoon. this is the cold front down toward riverside and dahlgren crossing 301 into areas in southern and eastern charles county, extending to northern calvert county around north beach and shady side in anne

arundel county. this is that line where south of it is still warm. behind it, the winds are starting to kick up. temperatures are dropping. we sit at 59. look south, it is 71 in richmond right now. 63 at the pax river naval air station. 49 in hagerstown. 32 in garrett county. we have a nearly 40 degree spread from richmond to garrett county. and behind this front, winds. they're howling. gusting to 39 nearly 40 miles per hour in washington, about the same in leesburg. we have seen gusts over 40 miles per hour there. martinsburg to 37. we'll continue with these strong winds for the rest of the afternoon. in fact, for the evening as well. until 10:00 tonight, all of the counties in orange from frederick and loudoun and northern if you cannier -- fauquier, gusts between 50 and 55 miles per hour. we'll be talk about the rest of the holiday weekend. j.c.? >> thank you, howard. you know, nearly a million

people will take a train or a bus to their thanksgiving destination. today is one of amtrak's busiest days of the year. they are asking passengers to arrive at the station early and also to remember there is a two-bag carry-on limit. if you're taking a bus, remember that most of the discount buses now leave from inside union station. signs will be posted to the proper gates. now, most people will be traveling, of course, by car. we can't forget the busy airports. they're jam-packed with folks trying to get to their loved ones. our surae chinn reports despite higher ticket prices this year, people are taking to the skies. >> just hoping it moves fast enough for me to make my plane. >> reporter: the mad rush before thanksgiving and pricy plane tickets have deterred the lunder family from getting to grand ma's house. >> we just tried to keep our expectations low, give

ourselves plenty of time. pack ahead. >> we're going to florida and i really want to visit the beach at a cold time in the year. >> tell me are you're heading to. >> chicago airport. >> is this what you were expecting when you came here to the security line? >> pretty much. it is busiest travel day of the year so i was prepared for anything. >> reporter: ticket prices jumped 20% from last year but overall, travel is up. >> they might have cut back on other discretionary items. we're seeing planes very full this weekend. >> one thing you can be certain are the long lines and crowds when you come to the airport. another thing parents don't have to worry about is taking off kid's shoes if you're 12 and under. >> it is better. hopefully one day we won't have to take off our shoes. >> they do need to take out their ipods and playstations and any other gadgets to put through security. >> add extra time and a whole lot of extra patience. >> reporter: this crowd says the payoff of spending the holidays with friends and family can't be beat. >> i haven't seen them in awhile. me living here and them living

there. it is always worth it, whatever the hassle is. >> reporter: at reagan national, surae chinn, 9news now. aaa says that sunday will be the second busiest day and they're projecting that about 75,000 washingtonians will be flying this week. higher gasoline prices could make driving a little more painful. making the drive a little painful because you're going to have to pay more for gas. in our region, the average price for gasoline is up nearly 50 cents from last year. so, let's take a look at where the prices are different in different communities. in upper marlboro, regular grade gasoline is averaging about $3.27 a gallon. in warrenton, virginia, regular gasoline is amping about $3.28 a gallon. in reston, you can expect to pay $3.44 a gallon. and in germantown, maryland, regular grade gasoline is averaging about $3.40 a gallon.

a st. mary's county maryland man is in custody right now. he's accused of drunk driving and crashing into a school bus. it happened late last night in mechanicsville. three cars were involved in the collision at men ackicsville -- mechanicsville road and bud creek road. kravitz was drunk when he slammed his car into another. he then crashed into a school bus. the bus was carrying a girl's basketball team from great mills high school. 20 people were taken to the hospital. 15 students with injuries were not serious but the investigation is still underway. a preliminary hearing for jerry sandusky, the former assistant football coach at penn state was accused of sexually abusing several young boys, has been pushed back. it will now take place on december 13th. sandusky is accused of sexually

abusing eight boys over a 15 a- year span. he could also face additional charges related to new allegations and more children who have come forward. at the hearing, prosecutors will try to show that they have enough evidence to take this case to trial. the man accused of being the east coast rapist will be back in virginia to stand trial. prince william county prosecutor paul ebert petitioned to have aaron thomas returned to the commonwealth where he faces potential life sentences. thomas is currently being held in new haven, connecticut, where he pleaded guilty earlier this year to a rape from 2007. authorities say dna shows that he is responsible for rapes and other attacks on 17 women from virginia to connecticut. still to come when 9news now continues, it is a holiday miracle caught on tape. see what happens when helicopter blades come in

debate. danielle nottingham has the latest. >> reporter: newt gingrich is taking a stand on a controversial issue, immigration. >> i don't see -- the party that says it is the party of the family it is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here a quarter century. >> the current republican front- runner is proposing that illegal immigrants be allowed to stay in the u.s. if they have already laid down roots here. and last night's g.o.p. debate, gingrich's rivals immediately fired back. >> i don't agree that you would make 11 million workers legal because that, in effect, is amnesty. >> people respond to incentives. if you can become a permanent resident of the united states by coming here illegally, you'll do so. >> reporter: the subject of the debate was foreign policy and the candidates were united in their criticism of president obama's policies. >> we haven't done a very good job defining and articulating what the end point is in afghanistan. >> why don't we mind our own

zeeland. the pilot was helping to set up a christmas tree. his chopper's blades came in contact with high-tension wires and crashed! this all happened with the pilot's son looking on. >> it was pretty nerve-racking, actually. to see my father -- have it come crashing down around him. it was pretty nerve-racking. >> the pilot walked away with only minor injuries. however, at least four people in italy were not as lucky. they were killed when heavy rains triggered mudslides in sicily. cars could be seen carried away by waves of floodwaters. many of the villages nearby are submerged. a free thanksgiving dinner for hundreds of displaced holly acres trailer park residents

last night. they were all treated to a holiday meal at a hotel in woodbridge, virginia. while having dinner, many learned that the prince william county's zoning board overruled the ban on rebuilding their neighborhood. many of the residents have been living in shelters since tropical storm lee washed out their homes. that happened in september. >> it is like really hard to be around everyone else because we had to move on with our lives and be with people we don't even know. >> could be awhile before residents are allowed to remr. because another appeal has been filed blocking redevelopment of the property. now, here are two lucky birds. they were spared. from the holiday dinner table. president obama pardoned liberty and peace. the tradition of pardoning thanksgiving turkeys dates back

to 1947. when harry s. truman was president. always fun to see that. all right. >> serious weather this afternoon in the form of the winds that we're going to be dealing with. >> but it is going to get better. >> it is. we just have to get past today, tomorrow, friday, saturday, sunday, all look good. we have a nice stretch of weather. hopefully you're settled in to wherever you're going to be for the holiday. traveling won't be good either. let's take a look at the wind advisory out to the west of us. it was expanded to include frederick and loudoun county. areas above 5,000 feet. gusts to 50, 55 miles per hour, southwestern virginia, parts of north carolina, high wind warnings. talking about gusts 60 or more down there behind this very strong cold front which came through a couple of hours ago. some of the winds are really have been gusting 40, 45 even. latest look at the numbers, we've got gusts to 39 here in town. also in leesburg. 37 winchester up through martinsburg. it is gusting to 33 in southern

maryland. 32 in andrews. a very windy afternoon. some of us are also going to see some showers soon and then more showers over the next few hours coming in from the north and west. some sunshine mixed with clouds. upper 50s as we head toward 1:00. few more showers starting to show up. look at the winds west of 25. west at 23. northwest now at 19 at 5:00 with showers around. 53. lingering showers by 7:00 south and east of town. 50 degrees. still a northwest wind at 21. these are the sustained winds. these are not the gusts that could be 30, 35, 40 miles per hour here in washington. by 9:00, north winds at 18. that will push wind chills down in the 30s. temperatures overnight, areawide, will drop into the 30s. showers, they were heavy rains in spots last night. in fact, in the last 24 hours or so, areas in fauquier county, an inch and a half of rain. this line came through. that's what we're looking at

now. that's the cold front. it extends from around north beach to plum point. you can see the showers toward benedict. not quite to mechanicsville. to dahlgren, almost to colonial beach. this is all moving off to the east and the northeast slowly. that's it. behind the front, the winds really start to kick and the temperatures are dropping. 70 still in tappahannock. we're at 59. 49 hagerstown. the low 30s in garrett county where you'll have some snow showers fly in here later today and tonight. officially, 59 with mostly cloudy skies. west-northwest wind gusting to 39 at reagan national. the humidity is really dropping off now. documents down to 43 degrees. -- the dew point is down to 43 degrees. once we get rid of the storm in the east, the rest of the country looks good. anybody traveling today or even tomorrow, better day tomorrow, not much weather to speak of. we have the rains along the california coast up through

seattle and portland and parts of northern idaho and the rest of the country quiet except for central florida and new england where there's rain and snow. northern new england, they're getting quite a snowstorm. some areas we'll see locally a foot of snow. we'll watch the moisture in pennsylvania because that will work its way southeast. there will be scattered showers here. i don't think it will be the wall of rain as depicted by the models but showers coming through with the wind. clock stops here at 4:00. we'll advance to 7:00 p.m. now, most of the rain will be east of 95 pulling away from us. we clear out tonight. a chilly night. temps down in the 30s with winds out of the northwest. breezy night. wind chills in the 20s tomorrow morning. a sunny day for thanksgiving. then we'll watch as the moisture stays away from us but the milder temperatures come back. as we head into friday. by friday, we're back in the 60s. today, temperatures are dropping. we already hit our highs in the low to mid-60s earlier with the showers at times this

it cooks in all of its juices. >> you get your vietnamese baguette. it is light and airy. chili lime mayonnaise that we make in the store. it is not that hot. it is toned down by the mayonnaise. if you don't like spicy, it really gets the flavor. basic conference call umber slices. -- cucumber slices. in this case, we're doing the soy sauce. >> brisket is so tender. >> it is. we cook it for 12 to 16 hours. it breaks down and melts in your mouth. a little vinegar, sugar, you get the tangy, the sweet and the crunch so the sandwich is not boring and monotonous. a little cilantro. if you're in the store, we would cut you in half for you so it is easier to eat. >> that looks good. >> nice and crunchy. >> i bet the bread is what makes it so special, too.

>> it really is. we admire our baker. he worked hard to perfect the bread. it is amazing. >> now, these are -- i would call them spring rolls? >> it is a summer roll. it isn't fried so it is healthy and delicious and nutritious. >> we put vermicelli noodles, fresh cucumbers and mint and cilantro. the filling is a butternut squash cooked in coconut, soy and ginger. very healthy. >> how long have you had the restaurant down there? >> it has been over three weeks now. going in the fourth week. enjoying some nice success. >> on 19th street northwest. fabulous vietnamese hoagies. american style. >> i'm still fascinated by this thing which looks like a fish tank item. you're cooking with it. >> no fish. just cooking meat. >> howard, let's get your seven- day forecast before we go. >> yeah, we've got some wind we have to be concerned with today because some of the gusts out west could be over 50 miles per
