. this is 9news now. from stafford to bailey's cross roads, people throughout the dc area lining up and camping out tonight. some shoppers and bargain hunters started camping out yesterday for bargain sales, but some stores are not making them wait until tomorrow. armando trull is live in fairfax where both toys "r" us and wal-mart are open already. armando. >> reporter: that's right. and, do you know what, right here i'm at the target store. and right behind me way back there is the end of the line. let's show you the beginning of the line. all the way here. look at all of of the folks. wave. you're live on tv. there you go. that up there is the front of the line. now, if you remember, target is the store that when they announced they were going to be opening at midnight, that

prompted 170,000 of the employees to file a petition online to say they didn't want to open earlier. but, do you know what, there are a lot of other stores opening even earlier. there were hundreds outside the toys "r" us store at the fair lakes shopping plaza waiting for the 9:00 p.m. opening and the deals on items. >> apple ipod touch. >> reporter: are you spending more or less? >> we're spending less and we're coming for specific items that are on sale. >> reporter: opening on thanksgiving or midnt friday is just one of the ways individual retailers are hoping their merchandise will wind up in shopper's hands, carts and ultimately their stocking. >> when they come into our store, we make it as easy as possible to shop for those values as well. we prepare our store as they come through. we call it a racetrack. our racetrack is set up with all of the value deals that they're coming in and team members designed to designate those areas. >> reporter: black friday is

we are running additional names on the bottom of your television screen. a georgetown student has a lot to be thankful for after being arrested in egypt a few days ago. he is now free. ken molestina is live in the satellite center with details. >> reporter: yes, 19-year-old derek sweeney s one of three students arrested earlier this week in cairo. they were arrested because of throwing molotov cocktails. today his mother got some good news. >> they confirmed the three boys were being released. >> reporter: joyce finally got the phone call she had been waiting for. her son is coming home. and according to the consulate to the u.s. embassy who called to give her the news, getting him and the other two students freed wasn't easy. >> they were very, very fortunate that we are -- this is

something we should truly celebrate thanksgiving. >> reporter: sweeney, a jefferson city native pictured on the far right was arrested along with two other american students. 21-year-old luke gates from indiana university and gregory porter from drexel. sweeney had been studying abroad in cairo. the three were arrested among rioters there when they claim they were throwing molotov cocktails during protests that took place on the streets. accusations the mother denied. she was at home this morning when she started getting e-mails that the judge was going to let her son free. forget the turkey, she just wants her son home. >> even though we didn't go buy a turkey, it's like, okay, whatever, who cares. >> reporter: we understand the attorney genel in cairo is not going to be appealing this decision. the three young men spent the entire day getting medical evaluations and finishing up paperwork for their release. although it's been confirmed they are being freed, we do not

know exactly when they'll be coming home. matt. >> ken, thank you very much. new at 11:00, all lanes of wisconsin avenue and georgetown are opened once again after a building collapsed this afternoon in the 1400-block of wisconsin avenue. dc fire says a vacant building collapsed on the back side of the property. the collapse then caused a gas leak that shut down parts of wisconsin avenue for several hours. the fire department says the collapse may have been caused by renovations being done in the building. what started off as a thanksgiving day shopping trip turned into a deadly accident killing a pedestrian and sending six others to the hospital. it happened just before 1:15 this afternoon at the home depot on east-west highway in hyattsville. police say a 60-year-old man had gone to the store to go shopping but it was closed. he then started to leave the parking lot. that's when police say he lost control of the car, running into six men who were standing on an island in the parking lot. investigators believe the driver had some sort of medical emergency just before the accident. >> he passed out.

he had some type of medical condition and he ended uptaking the -- driving -- veering off to the left and struck six people sitting or standing by the curb. at this point the passenger in the car tried to take control of the steering wheel and maneuvered around the individuals that were being hit by the car and ended up hitting a wall. >> all six pedestrians and the driver were taken to the hospital. one of the men hit by the car later died from his injuries. police are not sure why the men were standing in the parking lot. imagine serving overseas in the military, picking up the phone and hearing happy thanksgiving from none other than your commander in chief. it happened several times today from the oval office, president obama telephoned ten service members serving in afghanistan and iraq in addition to wishing them a happy thanksgiving. he also thanked them for serving the country. mr. obama continued that thought in his weekly web and radio address. >> for all of the service men

eating thanksgiving dinner far from your families, the american people are thinking from you today. and when you come home, we intend to serve you as well as you're serving america. >> today the troops were interested in a different kind of serving. on most days the men and women deployed in iraq and afghanistan, a cold prepackaged meal. but on this holiday cooks served up a real feast. >> turkey, ham, dressing, crab legs, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn on the cob, dinner rolls. >> a lot of soldiers say getting a taste of home is the next best thing to actually being home. elsewhere at a military base in arizona, some troops got a taste of home served by congress member gabrielle gifford. she and her husband volunteered their time in the dining hall of an air force base in the congresswoman's home town of tucson. she continues to recover from a gunshot wound suffered during a

couldn't afford a holiday feast. so as lindsey mastis reports, volunteers provided meals to some of them. . >> reporter: everybody was welcome at the simple union, 600 pounds of sweet potatoes and 400 pounds of stuffing. it's for those in need. professional boxers from the area volunteering because they know what it's like to be in their shoes. >> there's been times in my life where i wish i had places like this to come to that gave food on thanksgiving. >> god is gracious, god is good, amen. >> reporter: at the salvation army, the cheese cake factory opened shop and served hundreds of meals. >> the salvation army, my family probably wouldn't get fed all of

these years. so i really thank them. >> reporter: and at the four seasons in georgetown, this was set up for our first responders in the city, and they're able to stop by and get a full thanksgiving meal. and what they do is get on to may now wer may flower, not a ship. >> the food is good. it's a nice way to say thank you for everything they do here. >> reporter: thanks for volunteers. there were many happy faces and genuine smiles. >> thank you. >> reporter: in washington, i'm lindsey mastis, 9news now. people here in the dc area also took time to make sure the occupy dc protestors got a traditional thanksgiving dinner. dropping off boxes with turkey, rice and a whole lot more. they said they're not supporting any group or cause, but want to do something nice for the protestors. well, it was nice weather for protesting. for all of you that slept in

late, here is a look at the macy's annual thanksgiving parade. flying high, more than 40 balloons. favorites like snoopy, mickey and kermit and a few new faces like julia. marching bands from all over the country. >> this is my first time being here, so i'm real excited and nervous from all of these people watching. >> reporter: an estimated 3 million spectators lined the streets. another 50 million tuned in at home. and, yes, those who stuck it out got to see the man, the myth, the legend, santa claus. mark your calendar, folks, christmas is only 30 shopping days away. >> it sure was a perfect day for parading or protesting or anything outdoors. >> it really was you. saw the blue sky here. blue sky here in dc. the conditions will continue through tomorrow and into the holiday. >> excellent. >> so it's been great weather heading this way. itis going to be even milder -- it's going to be even milder
