>> muslims in our area are on high alert after alleged demands that they be killed. the source of that anti-muslim rhetoric is an internet blog. now, the fbi is investigating. ken molestina has been following the story and joins us live. ken? >> the blog in question is called the bare naked islam. the material on it doesn't favor islamic culture. one group is claiming that material is going beyond free speech and is being taken as a threat. >> this is what's being considered one of the latest threats against muslim americans. the blog site bare naked islam is full of messages. it caught the attention of the counsel on relations. >> it is inappropriate to make threats of a mosque. >> muslims themselves. say lor is referring to comments made, calling for the

violent actions. the blog talks about violence against muslims in mosques throughout the country and our area but it specifically has mention of this center in falls church. i want muslim blood on my hands writes the person who claims to have issue off route 7. it is the same where anwar served. the american born cleric was killed in yemen after u.s. officials identified him as planning attacks and conspiring against the u.s. it is that kind of association, say lor believes, may be driving the calls for violence. >> most people were introduced on islam september 11th watching an airplane fly into a building. >> the blog's bonnie says it is in response to muslim violence against nonmuslims. i have never called for the destruction of all mosques but i've called for the banning of islam and the closing of all mosques in the u.s. the

administrator says violent comments are filtered out but some get through. >> when people become desensitized to saying horrible things about the other, you usually begin to see an uptick in violence. >> it shows violence against muslims doubled across the country from 2009 to 2010. andrea? >> ken molestina, thank you. a disturbing trend. cabdrivers robbed, even carjacked by people posing as fares. now the metropolitan police department is asking for help in finding the suspect. armando trull is live at union station tonight with more on the investigation and armando, we're hearing 11 incidents this month alone? >> reporter: that's right, andrea. taxi drivers are telling me there could be more robberies. taxi drivers come to metro station, union station because they get a lot of fares here but also this is one of the places where they, every year, have dozens ands dos of passengers who refuse to pay or sometimes rob them.

now it appears those crimes may be on the rise. >> it is a most likely profession not to come home at the end of the night. >> reporter: doing this became even more dangerous for taxi drivers this month which so far has seen 11 robberies. one of them a car jack. >> this time of year, quite a few robberies occur. >> of course, there is a bad economy which also pushes crime up. >> reporter: the robbers are hailing cabs at or near metro stations in the district. >> it is a convenience to make a fast get away. he can run into the tunnels and get away via the subway system. >> franco who heads an association of independent taxi drivers says many more robberies may have gone unreported. >> usually, when a cabdriver reports a crime, the police officer victimizes the cab driver. comes and asks them to produce all of the i.d.s, look at his

manifest and at times, will issue tickets. >> police are asking cabbies to turn on their flashing 911 beacons to alert citizens they're in trouble. >> you think that's going to work? >> no. it is not a safety feature. >> franco says smartships may be a better safety feature. >> a panic button which would be directly to the police department with the gps system. >> andrea, franco also says that another good idea would be cameras, not only in the actual taxicabs themselves but at certain stops. for example, here at union station. they say that there are plenty of cameras inside union station but none where the passengers line up. if any of the passengers wind up being robbers, the cameras could help identify them. reporting live, i'm armando trull. >> interesting idea. thank you, armando. >> prince george's county police are searching for a person who shot a man in broad daylight. it happened around 3:45 this afternoon in the 3400 block of brinkley road. the victim told officers he

heard a gunshot and then noticed he had been hit. but he didn't see who shot him. he's now in the hospital in critical condition. police don't have a motive or any suspects in that shooting. new at 11 school. , the first of the three american college students arrested in egypt is now aren't flight home. luke gates left cairo for frankfurt, germany. gregory porter and georgetown student sweeney will fly out next time in the next few hours. sweeney's mother says derek will fly to frankfurt then here to d.c. and on to st. louis. he is expected to arrive there late saturday night. all of these prayers are coming our way have been answered. have truly been answered. we couldn't feel more blessed. >> joy sweeney plans to make her son a belated thanksgiving dinner. the students were arrested on sunday for allegedly throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with demonstrators. aruban prosecutors have appealed a judge's decision to

release the gaithers man suspected in the disappearance of robyn gardner. if that appeal is denied, gary giordano will be released from jail next week and free to leave aruba. he has been detained by police since the frederick woman went missing in august. earlier today, a judge denied prosecutors' request to hold giordano for another 30 days while they investigate her presumed death. the judge said there were no grounds on which to keep giordano in custody. the first numbers on black friday sales won't be out until sunday but retailers across the country already say they've seen more customers this year. while we all expected big crowds and long lines, what we didn't anticipate was the awful behavior that seemed to break out everywhere today. 20 people at this los angeles walmart were injured when a woman used pepper spray to keep other

shoppers away from the merchandise she wanted. police are still looking for that suspect tonight. in san francisco, police believe robbery was the motive for shooting in a walmart parking lot just after midnight. witnesses say a man was shot when he tried to fight off his attackers. he is expected to survive. in sacramento, two men got into an argument at a macy's store, leading one of them to stab the other. in phoenix, a grandfather says he was roughed up by police after a crowd got out of hand. the man says he put a game in his waistband so he could keep his grandson out of harm's way. but then police grabbed him and slammed him to the ground, thinking he was stealing the game. in south carolina, police believe a shooting near a myrtle beach walmart was black friday-related. in fayetteville, north carolina, police say someone opened fire inside a mall full of shoppers. fortunately, no one was hurt. tist the season. >> unbelievable.

a young man from youngstown, ohio, began his career with the d.c. police department. a career that as matt jablow tells us, is still going strong. >> monday morning, orientation. >> sergeant buddy smallwood remembers his first day on the job like it was yesterday. >> then tuesday, we went to the range and qualified with a pistol. >> in fact, it was 17,291 days ago. >> sometimes, time slips by you but it slipped by me more than i wanted it to. >> currently the longest serving member of the metropolitan police department, the now 672-year-old -- the now 72-year-old smallwood joined nypd in 1964. >> young and slim, still playing ball. >> reporter: 47 years later, he is still driving a patrol car. and still very much enjoying the job. >> if i didn't like it, i

wouldn't be here. it is very rewarding. >> reporter: despite the fact the mean streets of washington are a lot meaner than when he started. >> times have changed. i don't think they've changed for the better because there is more violence than there has ever been, because of the drugs. >> sergeant smallwood has worked in four different police districts. his latest here at the seventh district in southeast washington started in 1977. a few years ago, the roll call room where he often presides was named after sergeant smallwood, an honor he calls one of the most humbling of his career. >> oh, yes. >> reporter: when asked how much longer he expects the career to last, the married father and grandfather says only that he won't make it to 50 years on the force in 2014. >> one morning i may get up and say it is time to go. >> he's looking forward to looking back on a job well- done. >> the friendships and everything that i made over the years, i met a lot of good folks.

pretty lucky guy. pretty lucky. i've been blessed. >> reporter: in southeast washington, matt jablow, 9news now. a job very well-done. sergeant smallwood says whenever he does retire, he's going to spend a lot more time with his family than his law enforcement career aloud. he would like to work with kids, perhaps coaching basketball or football. tomorrow morning, nasa starts its trip back to mars. it will launch the curiosity rover to the red planet. curiosity carries ten instruments, one of which was designed at nasa's goddard space center in maryland. it is sample analysis at mars or sam. >> the primary science goal for curious sit to understand whether or not mars was ever habitable and looking at the chemicals that are in the rocks and searching for organic molecules is one of the major focuses of the -- and sam instrument is the premiere instrument that will help answer the questions. >> curiosity is set to launch

tomorrow morning. just after 10:00 a.m. this next story is from our you can't make this stuff up file. we take you to penn hills, pennsylvania. it is thanksgiving morning. a beautiful day. especially for a wild turkey rejoicing that he would not be someone's dinner that day. mr. turkey raised his wings, took a celebratory flight and smacked head on into the double pane plate glass window of a restaurant. it knocked the stuffing right out of that bird. >> it was comical, ironic on thanksgiving that a turkey flies into the window of a restaurant. the restaurant was closed at the time. the only flight casualty, the poor turkey. a much happier ending now to the story of a little kitten that somehow ended up down a utility pipe, along a sidewalk in southern california. someone heard the meows on thanksgiving morning and called 911. police, firefighters and animal rescue spent hours trying to

40s. overnight, we won't cool down a whole lot, especially in downtown main getting into low to mid-40s. it you look at the satellite and radar picture, we have the area of high pressure off the coast. that is keeping us really nice with lots of sunshine through tomorrow, blue skies and really some nice, mild conditions, well above the seasonal high of mid-50s. saturday is looking spectacular. sunglasses, definitely you'll need those. dress in lighter layers especially if you're going out when it is cold. it will warm up quite nicely tomorrow afternoon. i'm calling it mild to even warm in some locations. then on sunday, more clouds come through and we're talking about the chances for some rain as early as sunday night. we'll talk about that here in the future cast. this looks great. i'm showing you the broader view. a lot of folks will be travelling especially on sunday. during sunday morning, the immediate d.c. metro area looks fine. we'll probably see partly sunny skies but the clouds will be

increasing, thickening throughout the day. we're watching this system, this area of low pressure also with it, a weak cold front coming through. i don't think it will impact the immediate d.c. metro area until monday but as early as sunday night, places west and north of us could see some light rain coming through sunday night, especially overnight into monday and early monday morning. so, overnight, what can we expect? clear and cold again. two blankets will be needed along with your heater. low 43 degrees. tomorrow morning, grab a coat and the sunglasses. temperatures 30s and 40s. nice wind out of the south keeping us warm. mostly sunny, warm again. high of 64 to 69 degrees. can you believe that? cumberland, upper 60s on saturday. culpepper, 66. around downtown, 65. another mild 69 around downtown. here is a look at your sunday planner. 30s in the mornings. 40s by noon.
