hello, i'm j.c. hayward. thank you for joins today. kidnapped and robbed. three times in montgomery county. police say that it happened the same way each time. elderly men abducted outside the westfield wheaton shopping center and then forced to remove money from their banks. surae chinn has details. >> reporter: mall security and montgomery county police have stepped up patrols at westfield shopping center in wheaton. >> but forterri, she continues to worry about her family. >> it is worrisome to have to worry about your parents, especially. that shop in this area. >> a lot of people, they're talking about this because it happened three times. in the same area, you know. it is too bad. >> police say the same suspect is targeting men in their 60s

and 70s and threatening them with a box cutter. the latest victim, a 77-year- old man leaving the target. he was driven to several atms, cut with a box cutter and beaten badly. >> with a possible fractured skull and a possible broken nose, clearly, he's selecting people who he can overpower. >> i just think anybody that's targeting elderly people, i think they just need some type of help. >> the other two crimes happened to a 60 and 75-year- old leaving the giant grocery store last week. >> police say the suspect would force the victim to sit on the passenger side of the car, drive around to different atms and withdraw money from the victim's bank account. >> they need to find out who this person is and catch them immediately. >> before you go into the store or the mall, turnaround see where your car is parked. sometimes when you're deciding where you want to go, you become more of a target. >> good advice during the high shopping season. in wheaton, surae chinn, 9news

now. police are expected to release surveillance video this afternoon. this is a crimestoppers case. so, anyone with information should call the tips hot line. you could receive a cash reward of up to $1,000. the number to call is 1-866-tips 1-866-tips. prosecutors in connecticut will attempt to send the so-called east coast rapist to virginia today. 40-year-old aaron thomas of new haven is suspected of attacking 17 women. in one of the cases, two teen able trick or treaters were raped in woodbridge, virginia in 2009. thomas' lawyer is fighting extradition. he claims that connecticut's attempt to extradite his client to the old dominion violates his constitutional right to a speedy trial. the suspect accuse of opening fire on the white house is due in court this afternoon.

ramon ortega hernandez has a history of run-ins with the law. the idaho man made a bizarre video for the oprah winfrey show in which he cast himself as the modern day jesus. president obama was not home when two bullets hit the executive mansion. ortega has been charged with attempting to assassinate the president. the victim of a fatal shooting outside of dupont circle club has been identified as 34-year-old coleman of suitland, maryland. coleman is one of three people who were shot outside the heritage restaurant early sunday morning. three others were stabbed along connecticut avenue near n street. police say that a fight in the club spilled out on to the sidewalk. the restaurant has now closed while police investigate. a fire in prince george's county has claimed the life of a 6-year-old boy. it has left two women

hospitalized. phone video captured the raging fire yesterday morning on griffin street in chilham, maryland. a group of firefighters fought the flames in front of the house while others went through rooms looking for survivors. >> the first person that they took out was a little boy. he wasn't moving at all. it was bad. it broke my heart. and then i saw them taking one by one, with the woman, one of the sisters said that the sister had like -- you know, burns to her face. >> the home did not have a smoke detector. firefighters went door-to-door later in the day. they were checking on devices in homes and also installing free smoke detectors to the homes that needed them. the cause of the fire is being investigated. police have given the all- clear sign around d.c. superior court. however, roads were blocked around the court at 500 indiana

avenue northwest earlier this morning because of a suspicious vehicle. after several hours, the metropolitan police and the fbi decided that the vehicle posed no threat and that area was open again to traffic. gary giordano may be out of an aruban jail by tomorrow. the gaithersburg man has been accused in the disappearance and death of 35-year-old robyn gardner. gardner was from frederick, maryland. but there is no evidence or little evidence against giordano. giordano says that gardner was swept out to sea while the two were scuba diving. today is cyber monday, the traditional start of the online shopping season. retailers are offering big discounts and deals on shopping in order to get you to point and click. a lot of shoppers did not wait, however. experts say ecommerce jumped more than 20% this past weekend! today is also a big hit with

office workers. about half of today's sales will come from people at work. people were going online and of course, they were going to the stores on black friday. experts say that sales were up nearly 7% over last year. it is the best showing since the start of the recession. for the entire weekend, sales were up more than 9% compared to last year. there are 27 days left until christmas. i think it feels a little bit like christmas for redskins fans because, for the first time in nearly two months, the team won! they were trailing the seahawks by 10 points yesterday and with 10:00 left, the ball was run in 28 yards by roy and there was a touchdown. and that cut that deficit to 3. then just a few minutes later, rex grossman finds anthony

armstrong with his first catch in five weeks. and he made it count because it was a 50-yard touchdown. redskins rally. they beat the seahawks 23-17. rex grossman finally had something to smile about. >> we got a great bunch of guys, you know. our locker room had a lot of character, a lot of team chemistry, a lot of good people. after a losing streak like this, we stepped up and made the plays we needed to make. >> redskins will host the jets in their next game. new york rallies to beat buffalo yesterday 28-24. we have more sports news because bruce boudreau, the coach of the washington capitals was fired this morning. he's been here for four years. he achieved 200 wins faster than any coach in modern nhl history.

to be home. derrik sweeney and two other students were arrested while participating in the violent uprising in cairo. sweeney talked about his ordeal. >> we were in a near fetal position with our hands, handcuffed behind our backs. and with our shirts still over our head so we couldn't see anything. >> sweeney and the other students say that they are monitoring today's elections in egypt from right here in the united states. congresswoman barney frank is expected to announce his retirement. the 71-year-old massachusetts democrat was first elected in 1980. the lifelong liberal was one of the first lawmakers to announce that he is gay. 16 other democrats have announced plans not to seek re- election next year. that's compared with six republicans. coming up on 9news now at noon, frosty the snowman

frosty the snowman was not such a jolly, happy soul this weekend. 52-year-old michael walsh was dressed as a character and then he got into an argument with police on maryland's eastern shore. walsh says the officer hassled him after he made a joke about a police dog's presence at a parade in chestertown. after his arrest, walsh was released on personal recognizance. >> funnier than the event -- pictures funnier than the event. >> what can we say except i'm enjoying it. i'm loving it. >> november has been really good to us. >> it really has. >> december starts in just a few days. it will be cooler. it won't be bitterly cold. i don't see any bitterly cold air yet. we get into december, the start of meteorological winter. hurricane season ends on the

30th. outside, it feels like it is at least september. if not early october. here is a look at the day planner for the rest of the day. get ready for temperatures which are going to make a run toward the 70 degree mark. record at dulles is 71. that may fall but the records at national are in the mid-70s. not likely to fall. we'll be a few degrees shy as we top out around 70. south to southeast winds around 10 to 12 miles per hour. look at the tennessee and ohio valleys up to parts of the northeast. we've had passing clouds but it has been a dry day. i expect it to stay dry. the temperatures have really responded. got low 70s out in tappahannock, fredericksburg at 67. in the 50s in places like oakland and even in easton, 72. i was hoping to go skiing next weekend but i don't think that's going to happen at this point. sadly, it seems too warm. 67 for skiers anyway. 67 at national. 70 in springfield.

70 in vienna. baden is also 70. even at leesburg and gaithersburg, temps in the mid- 60s. it is very pleasant out there. winds have been south to southeast at 5 to 10. the warmth on the east coast which goes up to boston and new york, well in the 60s. 70 degrees in raleigh. in detroit and chicago and nashville and little rock, temperatures here in the low 40s. there are spots tonight in northern mississippi, western tennessee, northwestern alabama could pick up accumulating snows on the back side of this storm system which is bringing in all of the moisture off the gulf of mexico, shooting it up toward tennessee and kentucky and up and around us. high pressure is offshore but holding on just enough to keep us dry and warm today. but today is going to be it. it will be the last day but notice behind the system, where the upper storm is spinning. down here, there will be enough cold air to get three or four inches of snow in places like northern mississippi, they could have more snow in the ground for the season than we

will in many areas. as this system moves north, eventually the moisture will work its way in here. not this afternoon but probably as we head into the overnight, so by midnight, we may see some showers from the northern part of the shenandoah valley and some developing on the eastern shore. tomorrow morning, early, some light showers but during the morning, looks like a band of more moderate to heavy rains will be with us for awhile through midday. the afternoon features more showers and potentially a little cold as this front passes. we'll see mountain snows, still a few showers before midnight on tuesday. then by wednesday morning, notice the clock now at 5:00 a.m., brisk winds, much chillier with the mountain snow showers going on. wednesday's highs will struggle to get out of the 40s. we stay cool and seasonably cool and pleasant for the remainder of the week. today, 70ish. 62 tomorrow. in the 50s to near 60 tonight. not much moving tomorrow with the periods of rain.
