beholder. we're offended by the religious displays on government property. we think it is improper and utterly unnecessary. and we think they should not be on government property. >> now rick is speaking tonight at a loudoun county board of supervisors hearing. it's the supervisors that allowed all these displays. they pick ten and it's first come, first serve. the first ten that got their entries in last december, well they are the ones that are going to be on the lawn. there is a nativity scene coming as well. it will be interesting to hear what goes on that hearing. that will be for next year's display. coming up at 6:00, i'll show you how a sheriff deputy stopped me from taking pictures and allowed the woman continue vandalizing the skeleton santa. we'll have that coming up in a little bit. >> thank you. after a fierce confrontation with police, d.c. occupiers are on damage control. but not everybody is on message

and that is causing a rift among the protesters. delia is live at the mall where yet another demonstration is underway. we have a bit of a fracture here, delia. >> reporter: this is called our d.c. as you can see, they moved in here at the mall. they have worked at the occupiers on their shared common goals. fighting for better jobs, for more jobs, and a better economy. one major difference you will not see any long-term campouts and won't be any arrests. it was a turning point in the occupation and the most routey we have seen. protesters getting arrested sunday after building this illegal wooden house without a permit. by monday, what a difference. a very quiet, if not dull day at the occupy camp where many protesters are playing nice. thanking police and talking to

absolutely, man. i appreciate you all. >> a will the of cooperation we saw down at mcpherson square earlier today. now the two occupiers i spoke to who were arrested said they spent the night in jail. they were just fined $100 and sent home. well, back to the park, i should say. coming up new at 6:00, we're going to head inside the mall and give you a closer look at what is happening here. back to you. >> going to say a tail of two protests, but now it may be three or four. we'll see you at 6:00, delia. tonight, a high profile arrest placed the head of the aviation administration on leave. anny hong joins us live with randy babbitt's charges. why is he in trouble? >> randy babbitt was arrested over the weekend for drunk driving and now has been placed on leave. according to fairfax city police, babbitt was pulled over at 10:30 saturday night when officers saw him driving on the wrong side of old lee highway in fairfax. that's nine miles from his home

in reston. police say babbitt was the only person in the car and not involved in any accidents. police said he cooperated and released. babbitt was sworn in, in june of 2009. he's a veteran pilot and flew for 25 years for eastern airlines. here's a statement from the department of transportation released just this afternoon. administrator requested effective immediately to take a lev of absence from the faa. that request has been granted and deputy administrator will serve as acting administrator. now officials are in discussions with lawyers about his employment status. his court appearance is february 2. anita and derek, back to you. >> we are learning more about the drug suspension facing two stars on the washington redskins. >> the nfl suspended tight end, fred davis and trent williams for the rest of the

season. it is for violating the substance abuse policy and dave owens is live in the newsroom with reaction. i can't imagine shanny was smiling today at all. >> no, derek, he wasn't. this story began trickling out yesterday shortly before kickoff. naturally after the game, reporters wanted to know what was going on. we didn't find out anything. williams and davis was removed from the locker room before that locker room was made available to reporters after the game. here's what we do know now. both davis and williams violated the league's substance abuse policy multiple times. once immediately following the lockout, the suspension is for four games. it could have been worse, but they negotiated a settlement because some of this occurred during the lockout. mike shanahan was asked what he thought about all of this today. >> i spoke to both of them today. they are watching film. like i said, nothing has been said to me until something is said to me, they will be here. >> i was unaware of the

they could take longer to get there. plans to slash hundreds of processing plants and cut delivery standards for first class mail. bruce leshan was at the postal service headquarters for the announcement. >> these cuts unprecedented. the postal service is struggling to deal with a $14 billion loss this year. the postmaster general says the service can save billions by cutting the number of mail processing centers nearly in half from 487 to 252. and by cutting about 28,000 jobs. those cuts mean that virtually all letters that used to arrive in one day will now take two and most letters that used to take two days will take three. the old delivery standard had been in place for 40 years. the overnight service commitment is causing this tremendous amount of excess capacity within our network. and that is what we have to

deal with. and we've got to do everything in order to save this postal service. >> i understand, too, with this technology the way it is. e-mail this or, you know, through the mail. but no, i would rather have a post office. >> getting to be the season. the postmaster general has announced plans to close up to 3700 post offices, including many in our area and to deliver mail five days a week instead of six. but congress needs to sign off on some of that and there is no indication at this point that congress will act this year. derek. >> bruce, no matter what the case, you better get those christmas cards in the mail. >> get them going. >> yeah. >> three days after his house is raided by the feds, the dc council's meeting to talk about the action against d.c. council member, harry thomas. an accident involving a metro bus and a trash truck sends several folks to the hospital.

happy holidays, everyone. 12 people had to be rushed to the hospital after an accident involving a metro bus, a trash truck, and an suv. >> this happened before noon at the intersection of florida avenue and 13th street in northeast d.c. kristin fisher caught the action. >> i was shaken up a little bit. >> james rogers was sitting at the back of this bus when it was struck by a silver suv. >> a lot of people hurt. there were a lot of people hurt on the bus, yeah. like two people laying in the street. >> walter jamison watched it happen from his front porch. >> he didn't know where he was. he asked me if he was bleeding and he walked around and he fell out. >> that man was one of 12 people taken to the hospital. he had d.c.'s mass casualty transport bus. >> nothing life threatening, but they are being transported to local hospitals. >> nine of the injured were on the bus, two in the suv and

another in this d.c. department of public works trash truck. the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. but it appears that the trash slammed into the metro bus. florida avenue at 13th street was shut down in both directions for nearly two hours for cleanup and accident reconstruction. the investigation is still on going. in washington, kristin fisher, 9news now. >> what a mess. all right the wilson building all decked out for the holidays. mayor vincent gray was on hand for a holiday tree lighting ceremony this afternoon. there you see it. the tree located in the grand foyer of the main d.c. government building located at 13th and pennsylvania northwest. hundreds of people expected on the hill tomorrow for the annual capitol christmas tree lighting. that is taking place at 5:00 p.m. on the west lawn. a 7-year-old boy will throw the switch along with house speaker john boehner, the capital christmas tree lighting since

embattled d.c. councilman, thomas remains out of public eye, a few days after the fbi raided his home. >> but that didn't stop his colleagues from meeting in private to decide his future. that meeting wrapped up late this afternoon. bruce johnson has been working this story and joins us live with an update. what do you know? >> a lot going on down here

today. council members told us they instructed kwame brown to meet in private with thomas. the last time they were in private, he stepped down. my sources are telling me that when they meet in private, remove himself from his other committee assignments and possibly even to take a leave of absence from the council. >> we are just very sorry that it happened. >> d.c. mayor became the latest elected official to who said he was stunned by the fbi, irs raids when councilman harry thomas was home on friday. >> for everybody, the council. >> i think it is. but you know, we will go on with our work. we know it has to be done for the city. >> there was business to be dealt with today. but harry thomas chose to avoid all of this. it would have been a circus. it was the all important vote to approve an ethics bill. >> it also puts stiffer penalties in place for public officials that don't do the

right thing. >> when colleagues and the mayor attended the district building tree lighting ceremony, there was no harry thomas. thomas chose to sneak out of his office with not so much as a no comment for reporters. >> at this point, there's not a whole lot the council can do. we don't have the power to remove. those of us that believe mr. thomas should step down have already said that. >> d.c. council members met to discuss what to do about harry thomas. reporters were voted out of the meeting. >> respectfully ask that nonmembers leave the room at this time. >> following the one hour meeting, kwame brown would only say that he has been instructed to meet in private with councilman thomas. >> i look forward to having a conversation with council member thomas to discuss, so he's clear on where his colleagues are and we'll look forward to having that discussion shortly. >> you recall that harry

wssc worker. among those anxious to learn his fate, his wife and three children, sons ages 12 and 9, and a daughter who is just 7. this photograph of chuck may be his last contact with the world beyond the reservoir. it is in silhouette, taken on his mobile phone and posted to facebook at noon on friday. just hours before he disappeared. last night, in an emotional statement read by a friend. >> what kind of friend is he? he is a friend always there for you. he is loved and very proud of his work, the water, the woods, the people he works with, and above all else, his family. >> today, near silence as searchers scanned the quiet waters looking for some sign of the 35-year-old married father of 3. who loves his family, his job, and the washington redskins. >> our employees are certainly

reservoir, andrea mccarren, 9news now. back to you. >> we hope they have luck. thank you. the founder of wikileaks will not be deported to sweden to face sex crime allegations. a british court gave them permission to go to britain's supreme court to request permission for an appeal. it comes one year after the founder was first arrested in the united kingdom. sweeden hasn't formally charged hassan, but wants to question him about allegations of rape, he denies any wrong doing. this is a crucial week for the european debt crisis. german chancellor and french president met today to draft a master plan to save the euro. they want a treaty to put tougher restrictions on how much governments can borrow and spend. they'll try to push their plan through. european stocks were up on the news and the agreement set the tone for the european union

meeting. struggling homeowners facing foreclosure are getting an early christmas present. fannie mae and several other large mortgage lenders will not force families out of their homes during the holiday season. the foreclosure suspension runs from december 19 through january 2. seems more of us are shopping with credit. card analysts say we are using our credit cards more and starting to return to those prerecession spending habits. you may have noticed more offers in your mailbox. many companies are going to eliminate fees for foreign transactions, balance transfers, they'll even pump up your rewards. before you pull out the plastic, be sure you can pay off your balance in full each month. all right, so don't judge today's hot holiday toy of the day by her size. because while she is short in stature and you have to zoom in to see her, she is big on fun.

caught on tape. a woman stealing christmas trees from the boy scouts. surveillance video from st. louis shows the thief drive up, get out of her car, and walk toward the christmas trees. not even two minutes later she is stuffing a tree in the back of her trunk. she pulls away, but comes back a few minutes later and takes another tree. and what is more, the scouts say the same woman driving the same car was spotted on surveillance doing this a couple years ago. >> the cops didn't catch her? >> hopefully now. come on. >> tied a big tree you are putting in the car. let's check out video. shot this on her iphone tuesday. her daughter was turning off the christmas tree lights when she saw something moving in the tree and let's just say it wasn't a christmas ornament. it was a snake. casey's husband and kids wanted

fries and rice pudding. >> eating rice could potentially expose women and their unborn babies to levels of arsenic. researchers at medical school looked at 229 pregnant women who ate about half a cup of rice a day on average. >> women who reported eating rice have higher arsenic concentrations. >> the more rice the women consumed the higher the levels. arsenic made news last week when a consumer report study revealed unsafe levels of arsenic and lead in some brands of apple and grape juice. arsenic occurs naturally in the environment, in water, air, food, and soil. but high levels of exposure can be dangerous. arsenic has been associated with low birth weight, higher rates of infant death and increased cancer risk. experts emphasize those are not the levels we're talking about here. >> we're not recommending that people stop eating rice. we just need to monitor the amount of arsenic that is in
