an upswing today with brisk northwest winds in the 10 to 20 range. gusting to 30 early. those winds will slacken this afternoon but temperatures will only make it to about 45 or so. northwest to westerly winds this afternoon. 5, 10 miles per hour. much more pleasant afternoon than kind of slap in the face mother nature is going to give us as we go into the morning. right now, temperatures in the mid-30s. the storm system quickly pulling away. you can see last night we had a little bit, just a little bit of snow before the 11:00 hour. there she goes. very quickly. skies have cleared behind the system. we're looking at temperatures down to 36 here on the hour at 5:00 at reagan national. still 40 on the bay in annapolis. freezing in luray, winchester, cumberland and petersburg with 21 degrees and 10 inches of snow on the ground in oakland, maryland from yesterday's storm. fredericksburg is currently 39 and one more thing to show you, the winds are gusting, coming down a little bit now.

20 miles per hour. still gusting over 30 in easton. 32 miles per hour. hold on and bundle up. monika samtani is stepping in now. timesaver traffic. >> the big story, of course, from all of the rains is the flooding conditions on parts of our roadways and couple of them are shut down. over here in beltsville, route one is shut down at annandale road. you will be diverted. it shouldn't cause too much of a delay. amandale. watch out for the road closure at water street. that will be shut down for awhile. if you need to get to pennsylvania avenue, use route 301 or old crane highway to get yourself back on to pennsylvania avenue. we'll keep you posted on that situation. let's take you outside live. route 4 at pennsylvania avenue itself at the beltway is fine. no problems to report as you head down toward oxon hill. and across the wilson bridge into alexandria here and we'll take you to a last live look on

the other side of the american legion bridge. no problems to report. all lanes are open between bethesda and tysons corner on the beltway. coming up in my next report, another look at area roads at 5:10. mike and andrea? >> they have occupied office buildings, they have occupied public parks, now they occupied k street yesterday. occupy d.c. protestors say today, they're going to start a hunger strike. >> they say they're doing it to end the second class citizenship imposed on the people of the district rae inn mcpherson square park. good morning, surae. >> good morning to both of you. a different day, a different protest. different message. but same protestors. today, it is all about hunger strike. they're going to refuse food and water, actually, they'll only accept water but they won't accept anything else. three of these protestors will go on the hunger strike until d.c. gets its own voting rights. yesterday it was all about

corporate greed and jobs. they matched on k street. k street being the symbolic area for lobbyists, wealthy lobbyists in fact. well, more than 60 people were arrested throughout the day. most of them happened at occupy -- as occupiers took over k street and formed a human chain. the activity snarled traffic at rolling barricades and demonstrations happened. >> most of the things being pushed through are in favor of corporations, not in favor of the people. >> there are no good jobs for d.c. residents, especially ward 8. roach so much for being peaceful. we had last weekend with arrests going up when that makeshift shed was built and then yesterday, with more than 60 arrests happening, occupiers seem to be getting more loud, louder, restless and of course boisterous, backing up their causes. it seems to be going on. we'll see how the strike happens today. it starts at noon today. back to you.

>> thank you, surae live in mcpherson park this morning. >> later this morning, montgomery county fire investigators will return to a burned out home in garrett park. they're trying to find out how a fire started there overnight. the flames broke out along cambria avenue along raleigh. three people got out safely. no word on damage estimates yet. the red cross is helping the family find temporary housing now. this morning, former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky is waking up behind bars because yesterday police led him away in handcuffs again. this time, following 12 new charges of child sex abuse. the latest victim is accused the 67-year-old saying they met him through his second mile charity like the others. sandusky was charged on november 5th initially. he's acknowledged since then, showering and horsing around with boys but he said he never sexually abused them. he's now facing more than 50 counts including abuse that is alleged to have occurred on the penn state campus. sandusky is being held on a

$250,000 bail. the military is now saying partial remains from at least 274 americans, american troops are lying in a virginia landfill this morning which is far more than the military had originally acknowledged after accusations the air force grossly mismanaged the remains of fallen service members at its military mortuary in dover. all of this is according to "the washington post." the remains were cremated, incinerate and taken to a king george county landfill between 2004 and 2008. the military is saying they have no plans to notify the fallen troops' families. the air force is already disciplining three senior officials responsible for handling the remains of u.s. war dead. residents plans for rebuilding in holly acres is now on hold. the prince william county board of supervisors unanimously appealed the decision to do that. dozens of homes in the mobile park were damaged or destroyed in flooding from tropical storm lee. the county wants to keep 14

from being repaired or rebuilt because they're in a designated floodway. the county must file its appeal by december 21st after homeowners will be allowed to get building permits. if you're just waking up, it is time for the latest "your money" report. >> jessica doyle is here with today's headlines. good morning. >> good morning. busy day for investors on wall street. of course, it continues to be all about the economy. and the european debt crisis. today, we're going to see how traders react to standard & poors putting the aaa rating of the 27 nation european union on alert for possible downgrade. later this morning, a fresh update on the job market and a look at trade. as for stocks, checking the numbers, the dow stands this morning at 12,196, rose 46 points in trading yesterday. the nasdaq meantime, was nearly flat and the s&p 500 was up by two and a half points. congress has yet to make a deal to stop your payroll taxes from going up on average $1,000 and long-term unemployment benefits from going away in a

little over three weeks. now, today, top republican leaders in the house will meet privately to try to hammer out an agreement. at the same time, house democrats will meet with the president at the white house for similar discussions. senate majority leader harry reid vowed yesterday that the senate and the president will not go on christmas vacations until a bill is passed. >> once he was a governor, before that, a senator. today, jon corzine walks into a hearing as a star witness likely to invoke his fifth amendment right against self- incrimination. corzine has been subpoenaed to explain how mf globe bal collapsed on bad bets about the european debt crisis. it is the eighth largest bankruptcy in u.s. history. an estimated $1.2 billion in client money is still missing. this is the first time in more than 100 years congress has subpoenaed a former senator to testify. >> unbelievable. >> to say that's the eighth largest after what happened in 2008, that's saying a lot. >> it is saying a ton. it tells you just how big that liability was.

now at 30.05 and rising. temperatures in the teens in the northern plains. there is a lot of cold air. look at houston, it is colder in houston this morning than it is colder in washington at 32 degrees, even new orleans down to 39. the chilly weather is around. want to be warmer, go to miami. they're at 61. l.a. is in the 50s. a lot of cold air across the country. this is december. it is pretty normal stuff. light snow showers in the northern plains. the big thing we're watching is the storm system that hit us yesterday with heavy snow across maine, extreme northern vermont to new hampshire this morning. as it is pulling off toward the northeast with heavy rains along the coastal areas. even the next few hours, this thing will pull out of new england. behind it, dragging down colder air. nothing crazy for this time of year. we're not talking highs in the teens or 20s. highs in the 40s with the windy conditions this morning. we'll take the future cast and continue to push everything away from us. by noon, winds are starting to drop off here. this afternoon and evening, as

standing water in parts of our area. here is an example in upper marlboro, water street has been shut down between main street and pennsylvania avenue. we've been on the phone all morning long with maryland state highway. they cannot give us an indication as to when this will reopen. a lot of water to deal with here in upper marlboro. i suggest you either use route 301 or old crane highway to get around the situation. the road will be closed for awhile this morning. we'll take you over to a map. in beltsville, flooding has affected route one at amandale road. right now, we're being told if you're planning to head on to route 1 northbound has now been reopened on the southbound side, only one lane is closed. 9 5 looks ok from baltimore. heart of rockville, route 355 at 128, no problems here. another look around the area at 5:25. andrea and mike?

protesters will be removed going on this hunger strike calling for d.c. voting rights. they're asking congress and the president to give full representation in the district of columbia and full control of its budget. well, yesterday, it was all about ending corporate greed and increasing the job situation. well, hundreds of protestors also marched down all across d.c. and on k street. they marched into capital tax on constitution avenue. then they went to a lobbying firm, president clinton's former chief of staff. they then made their biggest stance on k street. they made the human chain. 62 people were arrested. >> let them do what they do. >> until we have a system where everybody gets a seat at the table and their bellies are full and their children are ed quited and their homes are secure, i will keep risking

rod blagojevich is headed to prison. wednesday, a judge sentenced him to 14 years behind bars for corruption including trying to sell president obama's old senate seat. blagojevich will begin serving his time in february. girls under 17 will not be able to buy the morning after pill over the counter now. health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius overruled an fda recommendation wednesday that would have moved the drug to drugstore shelves and not having to ask the pharmacist. this is the first time the white house has ever overruled an fda recommendation. $27 million in recovery funds from the obama administration is helping the district build the country's first 100 gigabyte superhighway. >> mayor vincent gray helped show off the highway during yesterday's tour. he hope it will attract more technology firms to the city. specifically east of the anacostia river. the city's chief technology officer says it will also make a big difference when it comes to public safety. >> how about specialized

today. mike and andrea? >> new year's eve came early to a theatre in new york city. >> alec baldwin is still tweeting about his plane incident. bigad shaban has more in this morning's eye on entertainment. >> actor alec baldwin is back in the twitters atmosphere after calling it quits. he stopped tweeting arrive a social media spat with american airlines. a flight crew kicked him off a plane and baldwin tweeted about it, vowing to never fly american again. the airline hit back on twitter and facebook saying baldwin broke numerous rules including refusing to get off his cell phone before takeoff. the bands guns in roses, the red hot chili peppers and beastie boys will be this year's inductees into the rock n' roll hall of fame. the ceremony is set for april 14th. the people who made the movie valentine's day are back

bit of snow. we weren't expecting much. but this was even less than we were expecting because this thing raced away quickly. a little coating up toward the mason dixon line. the snows that really fell were up here in western maryland, garrett county, grant county, preston, west virginia. those areas picked up from 5 to 10 inches of snow. temps down to 36 in washington. 32 for winchester, hagerstown. still in the mid-30s, tappahannock, la plata. cambridge has dipped into the 30s as well. with the winds this morning, gusting 21 in town and 29 at andrews air force base, we have wind chills down in the 20s and low 30s with high temperatures today in the 40s. normal high is about 49. a little bit below normal at 45. let's go to monika, timesaver traffic, talking about some road closures and new incidents developing. >> there are new incidents developing. in the meantime, let's go to some video from overnight. this road closure down in upper
