it going for as long as it takes. surae chinn reports the protestor's cause is about more freedom for district residents. >> reporter: the routine doughnuts and tea will not be part of the ritual. >> prepare mentally. >> reporter: and two other froesers who believe they can starve their way to d.c. voting rights. >> reporter: why a hunger strike? >> it has been 200 years of disenfrance icement for d.c. and something has to change. >> a hunger strike is not the tactic many of the protesters would use but they support them nonetheless. >> our general feeling is that if that's what you need to do, you need to do it. we support you and going ahead and taking that action. >> you're in violation of d.c. code. >> reporter: actions yesterday led to the largest scale arrest. more than 60 arrested on k street. protesting against corporate greed and the lack of jobs. >> it was kind of -- we were cold and wet and freezing but it was worth it for what we got

arrested for. >> a different day, a different cause for the three on a hunger strike. >> i'm a little nervous. longest i've gone without eating is about a day. >> there are so many problems, things going on around here. really they come back to government. we're committed to staying. people are not intending to leave. >> think once the country sees what we're doing, they're going to demand that congress not let us die. >> at mcpherson square northwest, surae chinn, 9news now. the people taking part in the hunger strike will also stream their action live on the internet 24 hours a day. well, there was some quick thinking from a school bus driver this morning and she was able to keep all of her youngsters safe. the bus caught fire just about 7:00 this morning on butterfield road in manassas, virginia. sky 9 was over the scene. the fire damaged the bus, a shed and a nearby car. the motor alerted the driver about the fire and she got five

children off the bus safely. a channel 9 facebook friend sent in a picture of the damaged bus. the fire marshal is investigating. a former teacher in rean arundel county is accused of having sexual relationships with at least three female students at glen burnie high school. the three girls are between the ages of 15 and 16 years old. police took jeffrey robert sears jr. into custody this morning and he is facing multiple criminal charges. he has been removed from his job as a teacher. our scott broom is covering this story and he's going to have full details coming up on 9news now beginning at 5:00 p.m. this evening. jerry sandusky has posted $250,000 bail. he's the former penn state assistant football coach, accused of abusing children.

it is unclear right now whether he was freed from jail. but sandusky was arrested yesterday on a new round of charges. two new accusers have come forward. as a condition of his release, he will be required to stay at home and wear an electronic monitoring device. prince george's county police are looking for a bank robber who has been disguised as a web slinger. they released the surveillance photo from yesterday's robbery at a bb&t bank in fort washington. you can see that the robber is wearing a black spider-man mask. he also had a gun. he handed the teller a note, asking for money. the robber was able to get away. a 17-year-old girl is in jail, accused of stabbing another high school student. early this morning, montgomery county police told us that they took 17-year-old briana united states funes into custody.

she'll face attempted murder charges. the stabbing occurred tuesday night at northwoods high school. the victim will recover from her injuries. parts of o you are region are still drying out from yesterday's record-break rain. this is what it looks like in upper marlboro, maryland. roads were washed thought morning. they picked up more than four inches of rain this week. in the western part of maryland, state officials are dealing with snow. >> she's out in carroll, garrett county. three inches in allegheny. two inches in washington county. so, areas west, certainly we've been out salting and plowing throughout the night. roads there are shaping up well. of course, out there, they've been dealing with snow since october so they're a little bit more used to it than we are here. >> in northwest washington, so much rain fell around union station last night that some thought that there was a water main break but it turned out not to be the case.

it was just heavy flooding. and piles of leaves ended up on top of the roadway. massachusetts avenue was closed between second street northeast and columbus circle for several hours. traffic is back to normal. coming up ahead, getting an early job on hanukkah. it doesn't begin for another two weeks but they will celebrate the holiday tonight at the white house. >> reporter: i'm danielle nottingham at the white house. coming up, mitt romney's campaign takes a swipe at the current republican frontrunner.

let's focus our attention now on the presidential race. we're less than four weeks away from the iowa caucuses. the race for the republican nomination is getting personal. mitt romney is now paying more attention to newt gingrich. so is president obama. danielle nottingham has more now from the campaign trail. >> reporter: the republicans running for the white house and president obama's campaign now have their sights set on newt gingrich. a new cnn poll shows the former house speaker holding a double digit lead in three early voting states. mitt romney's targeting those voters. in a morning conference call, his supporters launched a head- on attack against gingrich, pointing out what they call problems with his record.

and the romney team has a new tv ad filled with family home movies. it doesn't mention gingrich who has been married three times but it appears to take a swipe at him. >> i've been married to the same woman for 25 -- i get in trouble, for 42 years. the obama campaign is also watching gingrich's gains in the polls. sources tell cbs news the president advisors say gingrich has a shot at winning the g.o.p. nomination. >> i think either newt gingrich or mitt romney will be a formidable opponent for the president but they're both deeply flawed. i think the president could beat either one of them. >> the former speaker's strategy has been to highlight his differences with the current administration. >> eight years of obama will truly make the country dramatically more difficult and have dramatically greater problems. >> but some political strategists point out beginning rich's campaign has been slow to get workers on the ground in some key states where romney has a staff in place.

goodness. >> pretty ladies. hey, let's talk weather. snow did not fall except for a few flakes in and around the metro. as you got north and west, some elevation. snow five to ten inches out in garrett county, preston, tucker county, west virginia. in binghamton, new york, the storm moved east of us. so for those of you who wanted to see snow and didn't, we'll bring you the snow. they had from three to eight inches of snow from scranton up to binghamton. the storm moved up to the northeast, vermont, new hampshire, maine had four to ten inches of snow. there was a lot of weather with this. fortunately, we for us, we didn't get the snow. 3.1 inches at reagan national. that was a record for the month of december. so, you might have been disappointed you didn't get the snow. at least you weren't scraping your windows this morning. let's talk about the rest of this afternoon. plenty of sunshine. west winds at 13. still gusting close to 20 at

this hour. 44 degrees, 45 or so for the high as we get through the afternoon. by 5:00, we're back into the lower 40s and continue to see temperatures drop. winds will get much lighter this evening. they'll turn southerly. 4 miles per hour. calm even. a lot of the winds during the nighttime hours will go dead calm. that allows temperatures to drop into the 20s. there goes the storm. we've got some snows down wind of the lake there in new york state. some clouds in the mountains but for the rest of us, lot of sunshine. still gusts to 23 in gaithersburg. gusting to 18 at the naval academy. things are slowly subsiding with a gust to 20 here in washington at this hour. the temperatures now, 41 degrees at reagan national. warm spot being down south, culpepper, orange, fredericksburg. still only in the upper 30s in the shenandoah valley. and oakland, yes, 23 degrees. fresh snow pack there. officially 10 and a half inches in oakland and garrett county. 41. it feels like 33 with the west northwesterly wind at 14 miles

per hour. dew point is 24. the barometer has been rising quickly as the storm pulls away, a little weak system through nebraska. high pressure coming at us. once again from the west- southwest coming from the tennessee and the ohio valley, following the storm as the stocial quickly races into eastern canada, colder air coming in off the lakes producing the snow showers you saw go down to the mohawk river valley, albany into areas of vermont. there is not much weather coming toward us. while we have another front headed this way, this front that came through late tomorrow, going to be a dry front. here comes high pressure for later today and tonight with the high overhead, light winds. we get enough breaks in the clouds, clear to partly cloudy tonight. that will allow temps to drop off. tomorrow, here comes the front. in the morning, off to the north and west. it will stay there in the afternoon. tomorrow night, it comes toward us. by midnight, might even see some showers toward the northern neck, the eastern shore. might clip southern areas of st. mary's as this system falls

off to the north and east. that will be replaced by cold air again, another shot as we head into saturday. saturday's highs struggling to get to the 40 degree mark. looking at the forecast, mid- 40s, breezy. but diminishing wind. 20s and 30s tonight. milder tomorrow. around 50. southerly wind at about 5. for saturday, we've got temperatures on the cold side around 40. by sunday for the 'skins game, we're in the upper 40s and then look at that, the rest of the week, monday, tuesday, wednesday, it is going to be on the chilly side or excuse me, the seasonably chilly side, especially at night with lows in the 30s. we've got daytime highs around that 50 degree mark. it is pet line thursday and we've got energy here. this is kathy from the montgomery county humane society. this is candice. candice is a powerful, energetic -- >> candice is high energy. she's a labrador akita mix we think. she has a very curly tail.

she was a stray. the poor thing has been in the shelter since september. >> she needs to get out a little more. >> she's very, very tired of that cage and that concrete floor. she is a really sweet dog. the lady who evaluated her at the shelter and the staff all love her. she's a wonderful high energy dog. >> she said hello to everyone in the newsroom. >> she's friendly. she's very motivated by treats. i think she will be highly trainable. a wonderful dog for agility training. if you put a piece of food in front of her, this dog listens. she's very food motivated. >> we need somebody. we were talking off-camera. if you're a runner or have a yard, if you can burn off this energy. >> this is not a dog for granny. this is a dog for someone who is high energy themselves and has strength to them and is intelligent because she's a bright dog. she knows her own mind. but she listens well. she does know when to calm down. while we were waiting to go on the air, she was very calm. i don't know if people can see, she's got one ear that sticks
