. this is 9news now. tonight virginia tech is a campus still shaken. frightened and frozen for hours they were facing the unspeakable. >> across campus chaos seems all too familiar there after two people were found shot to death. one of them a campus police officer. the father of six shot dead in

his control car. a second person found dead in a nearby parking lot. >> that person now believed to be the officer's killer. peggy fox joins us live. >> reporter: derek, the shooting happened on the other side of lane stadium. that is where derek krause lost his life and virginia tech was the scene of another tragic shooting. but this time the school handled it differently. [ sirens ] >> reporter: sirens blaired across the campus minutes after a subject shot a police officer. >> there were so many police officers everywhere and it was just nuts. we didn't want to go outside. >> reporter: before it became clear that the gunman in today's attack was dead, the school locked down the campus and used a high tech alert system. >> i got five text messages in about an hour. and the school took major precaution and it takes a lot of

pride. i'm just glad i'm here. >> reporter: people say the officer was killed after pulling a driver over in a traffic stop. the gunman who was not involved in the traffic stop walked into the parking lot and shot the officer. authorities won't talk about a motive. >> the police pulled up and they opened his car door. and when they opened it, he just fell out towards the ground, sorry, and i could see his face and it was covered in blood. >> reporter: virginia tech was the scene of the deadliest shooting rampage in modern u.s. history april 16th, 2007. in an ironic twist, virginia tech officials were in washington today fighting a government fine. >> i feel like the school is a magnet for it. i don't know why. but it was definitely something that i will never forget. it was really scary. >> reporter: now, the shooter was found dead about a half a

mile away at a parking lot. the shooter's body was found. a weapon laying next to it. all we know is that he was shot dead. we don't know who shot him. there is speculation he may have committed a self inflicted gunshot wound, but police have not confirmed that. the campus was on lockdown for many hours until they figured out that that was the shooter. now, ken molestina is here. he was at a vigil tonight. a spontaneous vigil that the campus just had over by the memorial. >> reporter: that's right. and anyone who has stepped foot on campus here today knows that the mood here can easily be summed up with one word. disbelief. yet again these folks are having to deal with this nightmare. >> let's go. >> reporter: the wounds from the 2007 massacre are far from healed in the hearts and minds of the hokies community and they're living it over again. >> it's a joke this happened again. what else can you say. >> reporter: more than 100 people gathered at virginia tech's drill field, the site of

the campus memorial for the 33 people killed here three years ago. their hearts filled with pain. >> i think it's unreal that a police officer is shot. >> reporter: the younger students like freshn john shannon today's emotions are something that only described to them. they never thought they would experience this firsthand. >> it's pretty bad. all of the phone lines were tied up and no one really knew what was going on. >> reporter: and as the hokies community is trying to make sense of all of this, they're also trying to muster up enough strength to get through yet another tragedy. >> we're a family. we learned from the last one how united we are. how we have to stick together. >> reporter: and another vigil is scheduled for tomorrow. tomorrow's vigil at 6:30 is the university's official vigil. that is expected to bring people all over the community locally and of course the region. 9news now will be here bringing

you live reports. back to you guys. >> all right. the comforting power of the hokies nation. now, today's shooting brought back to the families of those that died four and a half years ago the horror of what they went through that day. >> gary nurenberg talked to one man whose life was forever changed. >> reporter: omar samaha whose sister, a freshman, is one that died. it changed the course of his life and today's news hit hard. because her death, her brother is -- >> it's sad and scary because the gunman is still on the loose. you don't know where he is. the school is on lockdown. you're hoping everyone is safe. you don't know how many casualties there's going to be. it reminded me of what it was like on april 16th for me and my family when i'm driving down to tech and not being able to get ahold of my sister rema. and so i thought about that. i thought about the parents, the

thousands of parents and siblings trying to reach their loved ones at virginia tech and knowing what they were going through at the time when they're calling to see are you all right, are you okay, are you safe. so i thought about all of that. >> reporter: he was really pleased to see the quick notification system kick in. it didn't happen on april 16th. pleased to see the lockdown. >> do not leave this room until you're told. do you understand? >> yes. >> yes, sir. >> yes. >> that needs to happen at other universities. alerting students and locking down the campus are two amazing things that need to continue to happen in the future. >> april 16th changed the way you're leading your life? >> yes. definitely. it changed the course of my life and the course of many other lives. i am now working full-time as an advocate for gun violence prevention. and it's definitely something that i never saw myself doing. but after you experience a loss

like this, especially a tragic loss that was preventable, in my opinion, loss of my sister got me to see all these different things in our society that we are not doing to try to prevent gun violence. and i want to work to try to do that. >> reporter: would your sister be proud of you? >> yes, i think she would. and i would not be doing this if i don't think she would be proud of me. i think that she would be encouraging me and she would be proud of what i'm doing. and i think she is. >> reporter: we reached out to the family's april 16th victims and he was good enough to come in and talk about it. he believes in stronger gun control on campuses. there are others who work equally hard to allow guns on campus. we covered that movement before and will again. but tonight we wanted to talk to omra as a brother and -- omar as

a brother and not an advocate. some university heads were here in dc earlier today to appeal a fine from the federal government over the school's response to the massacre back in 2007. virginia tech was fined $55,000 for failing to immediately warn the campus community a shooter was on the loose there. today the campus police chief testified, officers originally thought the 2007 shooting was an isolated case when they found two students dead in a dorm room. but two hours after those bodies were discovered, the shooter went on a rampage inside the classrooms killing so many more. a ruling on the fine is not expected until january. just a few hours after today's violence unfolded at virginia tech, there was another shooting, this time involving a virginia state trooper. matt jablow has details on that from caroline county. >> reporter: the call came into virginia state police just before 3:30 this afternoon. 3:24 to be exact. >> it's illegal to be out here as a pedestrian. >> reporter: a pedestrian on

the side of 95 south. about ten miles south of fredericksburg. according to police, when trooper michael hammer responded, he found the pedestrian and put him in his patrol car. that's when things took a sudden and violent turn. >> a struggle ensued inside the vehicle which resulted in shots being fired inside the vehicle. both the trooper and the suspect suffered gunshot wounds. >> reporter: police would not say if the suspect had a gun, nor would they say if he tried to grab the trooper's gun. all of that was part of the ongoing investigation. both the trooper and the suspect were taken to mary washington hospital in fredericksburg. the trooper with non-life-threatening injuries, the suspect with life-threatening injuries. >> and the investigation of the shooting shut down 95 south for several hours at mile marker 116. at last report, a lane open there but delays were still considerable. sex in the classroom. sex in the school stairwell. sex involving a teacher and at

least three students, all of them teenage girls. well, tonight those are the allegations around jeffrey sears. he's an english teacher and boys basketball coach and his arrest today and what it all meant nearly brought the school principal to tears. >> you know, as-principal of the high school, one of the responsibilities is to protect the students. >> police have launched an investigation and did so after the school staff overheard a girl talking to the friend about her alleged relationship with sears. investigators say sears cell phone contained at least three nude photos of the girls and hundreds of texts between the two of them. president obama says he will delay his vacation and stay in washington until that payroll tax cut is extended. house speaker john boehner says he is confident they'll move ahead with it.

day after a report says that one alleged victim screened in vain for her to help him while sandusky attacked him in a basement bedroom. she says that never happened. he faces more than 50 charges stemming from what authorities say were assaults on ten boys in his home on penn state property and elsewhere. he's out of jail tonight on $250,000 bond. on to a 9news now health alert. a panel of federal health experts said some widely used birth control pills should come with stronger warning labels. the fda panel says the pills yaz and yazmin carry a higher risk of blood clots than older pills. >> the pills can change how thick the blood is and can increase the chance of clotting. that's all pills. specifically this yaz or yaz-like pill increase the clot a little more. >> some women can stay on the

pills if they've already been on them with six months without any kind of problems, but many doctors are not prescribing them for first time use anymore. bayer which makes the two most popular brands says it found no increased risk of blot clots but they're facing hundreds of lawsuits from families of women that died while suffering heart attacks or strokes on the pills. new targeted therapy that significantly delay the time women's diseases get worse. experts at a symposion in santonio revealed an experimental drug. it held cancer at bay for an average of 18 months when added to standard treatment. a combo of drugs blocked the hormone estrogen and the tumor's blood supply. >> these two findings will affect close to 80% of our patients with met static breast cancer. that is huge news on its own.

30 in leesburg. even downtown temperatures in the upper 30s. even down to the south in fredericksburg temperatures 34 at this hour. 32 in winchester. 31 in martinsburg and we're looking at 33 at andrews. a few high clouds right now. they'll thin out as we go through the night. if you're looking for a sunny morning commute. what are you going to need? it's not going to be cold tomorrow but it's going to be chilly so you're going to need your coat and sunglasses. some clouds will come in as the cold front rolls through, but the weekend will be sunny but cold. in fact, saturday may be our coldest day so far this month of december. overnight clear skies and colder. two blanket night. low temps 26-36. winds light. they have calmed down after gusting to over 50 miles an hour. southwest at 5-10. we're looking at high clouds right now. they'll thin out. and then by morning partly cloudy and cold. you'll need a coat and sunglasses. 20s and 30s. winds light. and a mild direction.

welcome back to 9 sports. brian mitchell and david elfin joining me as we get ready to talk redskins and patriots. this is going to be an interesting one. redskins playing without their two key players. they were suspended for the rest of the week. how much do the suspensions hurt the already riddled offense. >> big time. they were having trouble scoring points anyway. now you're losing your top play maker and your left tackle. not a good thing. they're replacing fred davis with davis paul. may be replacing trent williams who has been playing really well with willie smith who has never played a snap. sounds promising, huh? >> very promising.

going up against andre carter. he has been a beast lately too. how much of a problem is he going to present for the redskins? >> i think it's going to be a big problem. andre carter was a very good pass rusher coming from the right and they moved him to the left side. he wasn't very effective there. now they have him in the right place. i think he's going to be a beast all day. >> and, of course, going up against tom brady, is this defense even stand a chance against brady? >> there is a little history here. tom brady has come to washington once and lost. other than that, i don't know what hope they have. the defense is solid but brady is just so good. i think they better say a lot of prayers. >> the patriots is the only game they haven't won on the road. landry listed on the day-to-day list. >> he has to get and prove he can play. if he can do it the last four
