then fled. >> is this really happening again? i wasn't here for the first shooting but it was just terrible. i was in shock. it was a tragedy. >> authorities won't talk about a motive. the shooter was found dead of a gunshot wound a half-mile away. >> it is devastating. i just can't believe something like that happened. like again, you know. it is so unfortunate. >> reporter: now, we don't have the name of the shooter. his body was found in a place called the cage. it is a parking lot right next to the duck pond, if you're familiar with the campus. and we're hoping to have the name of the shooter later today after they notify his next of kin. i'm peggy fox reporting live in blacksburg, back to you. >> awful story. thanks, peggy. in just a few hours after thursday's violence at virginia tech, there was another shooting. this one involving a virginia state trooper. matt jablow has the details on that one from caroline county. >> reporter: the call came into virginia state police just before 3:30 this afternoon.

3:24 to be exact. >> illegal to be out here as a pedestrian. >> a pedestrian on the side of 95 south, about 10 miles south of fredericksburg, according to police, when trooper michael hamer responded, he found the pedestrian and put him in his patrol car. that's when things took a sudden and violent turn. >> a struggle insued inside the vehicle which resulted in shots being fired inside the vehicle. both the trooper and suspect suffered gunshot wounds. >> police would not say if the suspect had a gun nor if he tried to grab the trooper's gun. >> all of that was part of the on-going investigation. >> both the trooper and the suspect were taken to mary washington hospital in fredericksburg. the trooper with nonlife- threatening injuries, the suspect is life-threatening injuries. in carolline county, matt jablow, 9news now. >> the investigation of the shooting shut down 95 south at mile marker 116 until 3:00 this morning. i-95 is now clear, however. it is sentencing day for former prince george's county

council woman leslie johnson. on tuesday, a judge sentenced her husband to more than seven years in prison. former county executive jack johnson was convicted of shaking down developers and taking kick baggs. leslie johnson tried to conceal money as federal investigators closed in. surae chinn joins us from greenbelt, maryland, where mrs. jon will be sentenced later this morning. surae? >> reporter: it is mrs. johnson's term. the same judge will be presiding that sentenced her husband, jack johnson to seven years in prison. lesli johnson faces 12 to 18 months, a lot shorter time for her role in the pay to play scheme. she is charged with conspiring for witness and evidence tampering so she does face a year and a half in jail for her episode as the fbi came knocking. >> er you hear them banging? >> tear it up. >> it is the fbi, jack.

i'm olga breeze in for howard bernstein this morning. it is clear, chilly this morning. temperatures have really dropped off. we're going to have a lot of sunshine through midday and into early afternoon before the clouds move on in. right now, bundle up if you're stepping out. our temperatures have dropped into the 20s and 30s inside the beltway. we'll have the sunshine through midday and late day. we'll get into the 40s by around noontime and most of us should peak out around 49, 50 degrees which is average for this time of year. we'll be looking at another cool night tonight as well as a cold forecast as we head into the weekend. monika? >> it has been a tough week commuterwise and i'm happy to say that this morning, things are really good on the roadways, southbound 270, fingers crossed it stays this way. looking good in clarksburg down to the point where the lanes divide and down to the american legion bridge. we'll take a closer look into maryland at 5:20. back to you. >> why should a woman lose her entire breast if the cancer is

confined to the milk ducts in the breast? that's the question cancer specialist at johns hopkins believe have been answered after more than a decade of research. it is a less invasive treatment and it is the subject of today's buddy check 9 report. >> if most breast cancers start in the milk ducts, why not go to the source to treat the disease? that's what the doctor, director of the breast cancer program at johns hopkins is doing. she's developed a new way to treat and prevent breast cancer by delivering chemo cell to the milk ducts. >> it is akin to putting drano down the tubes so that everything gets cleaned out. once it is cleaned out, the breast can stay intact. it doesn't have to be removed. >> using a hair thin catheter, chemotherapy is injected through openings at the nipple directly into the milk ducts.

the chemo destroys cancer cells or early stage cancers that are invisible by mammography all without toxic side effects. >> they inject the agents, we found that many of them are protected from getting cancer later on. there are those that had received the same drugs intravenously, had succumbed to their tumors. >> those results were from animal models. her colleague, medical oncologist dr. sterns supervised the study on 17 women with breast cancer who were scheduled to have a mastectomy. in this trial, the nipple therapy was used to determine how well the procedure was tolerated, not specifically to treat their cancers. >> women were able to tolerate it with minimal side effects. the common complaints was fullness in the breast and what they described as discomfort but not pain and have rated this lower than the mammogram associated discomfort.

this morning. our winds are still fairly light out of the southwest. we're not as cold as we could be. we're looking at a forecast though that's going to be on the chilly side particularly as we head into the greater portions of the morning, it will be slow to warm up. definitely dress in layers as you're stepping out this morning. we're looking at a forecast that has most of us sitting into the 30s. 20s outside the beltway. by noontime, many of us will hit the middle to upper 40s. so, with all of the sunshine late in the afternoon, it should be a pretty pleasant finish to the day. in fact, we will see our temperatures top out right around 49, 50 degrees which is definitely average for this time of the year. you'll notice as we get closer to sunset, a little bit more of the cloud cover is going to start to move on through. we're calling today officially partly cloudy and as we go into the overnight, we'll be mostly cloudy later on this evening. it will be a fairly nice finish to the work week so definitely get out and enjoy it. headlines for today, definitely going to see it with the cool

start starting to move on through. in fact, we're looking at mainly clear conditions this morning. although we'll have the cold start, we'll continue with that sunshine through the afternoon. a great finish to the week for us. but the afternoon clouds are definitely going to be sticking around through much of the overnight and then we're look pretty good for your weekend forecast. however, a wind shift that comes in tonight and into tomorrow bringing in the much cooler northerly winds, that will drop our high temperatures down tomorrow as well. so, be prepared for that. especially if you're heading out toward the army navy game or going to the redskins game this week. satellite and radar, not looking too bad. we had a few clouds pass by through the late afternoon yesterday. early morning hours, we're look pretty good with mainly clear skies. temperatures right now along the entire atlantic seaboard, a very, very cool into the 30s for most of us. we're definitely going to be keeping cool temperatures around for the next couple of hours. our future cast forecast model

is a little bit on the cool side. we're looking at temperatures this morning that have dropped down into the 20s outside the beltway. 30s inside the beltway. clear skies and very light winds out of the southwest. our highs today, well, we're going to get there eventually but for the morning, we're starting out on the cool side. midday to late afternoon with all of the sunshine around, we'll push out of the 30s into the middle and upper 40s by noontime and yes, by late afternoon, most of us should top out right around 49, 50 degrees which is average for this time of the year. we'll pull in a little more cloud cover. we're officially calling it partly cloudy by late afternoon and tonight, very cool conditions as temperatures drop off once again. the next seven days ahead will stay seasonably cool. i'll have the details in a couple of minutes. monika? >> if you're planning to head around town, we have one incident to report in manassas. overall, the big picture, everything is fine. no problems to report around the beltway. heading over to the west side of town looking fine on the dulles toll road, 66, you have

>> one is campus police officer derek krause, the father of six shot dead in his patrol car. peggy fox has been following the story since it began yesterday afternoon. >> reporter: the second victim we know now was the shooter. this is where officer crouse was shot. the police officer was coming this way and that he saw a driver not stop for pedestrians in this crosswalk. you can see the yellow sign there telling people to stop. the officer pulls that driver over. that's when the shooter walks up to officer crouse and kills him. [ sirens ] >> it was really scary. >> sirens blared across the campus minutes after a gunman fatally shot a virginia tech police officer near lane stadium. >> there were so many police

officers everywhere and it was just nuts. we didn't want to go outside. >> before it became clear the gunman in today's attack was dead, the school locked down the campus and used a high tech alert system. >> about five text messages in about an hour. the school took major precaution and you know, virginia tech takes a lot of pride -- i'm glad i'm here. >> police say the officer was killed after pulling a driver over in a traffic stop. the gunman, who was not involved in the traffic stop, walked into the parking lot and shot the officer. authorities won't talk about a motive. >> the police pulled up and they opened his car door. when they opened it, he just fell out toward the ground. and all you could see his face, he was covered in blood. >> virginia tech was the scene of the deadliest shooting rampage in modern u.s. history april 16, 2007. in an ironic twist, virginia tech officials were in washington today fighting a

government fine over their alleged mishandling of the bloodbath that left 33 people dead. >> to them, it wasn't too long ago. the school is a magnet for it, i don't know why. it was definitely something that i will never forget. it was really scary. >> reporter: that young man talked about just being shaken. he was in the middle of taking a final exam and made it through his exam and then many, manying of the students spent hours in their dorm rooms, waiting and worrying and very upset and nervous. last night, there was a spontaneous vigil at the memorial for the victims of the 2007 shootings and there will be another vigil this evening. as far as the shooter goes, we do not have his name. we're awaiting notification of next of kin. we expect to have his name sometime this morning. his body was found in a parking lot known as the cage with a weapon next to it. we know this morning that ballistics have matched that

colors on it. i cut them into probably five or eight inches then easily working them in with either hot glue or wire like this. very simple. it saves on ribbon, too. >> you have the nice colored leaves here. >> absolutely. i love to give it a little more texture and a little bit more depth and dimension. so, i love picking up the simple ornaments you can get anywhere and different colors. we got glitter. i love glitter, anything that sparkles is gorgeous. >> what else is the experience like for people going out to busch gardens? >> absolutely. this year, we have gloria, a beautiful stage production about the true meaning of christmas. in addition to that, we also have mock tower open. there are some rides open for thrillseekers. >> you always think when it is cold, the rides shut down. >> it depends on the temperature but mainly, it is pretty much open.

good morning once again. i'm olga in for howard bernstein this morning. we're starting off on the chilly side. temperatures in the 20s and 30s in and around the beltway. but with our day planner though, we're looking at a pretty good stretch. we'll have plenty of sunshine throughout the day. midday, late afternoon, many of us top out around 40. later on this afternoon, we'll see a few more clouds start to move on in. overall, a very pleasant day and a cool night tonight. bundle up if you're stepping out. temperatures are near the 30 degree mark. the next seven days ahead will feature a lot of cool air. winds turn out of the north tomorrow. a very chilly conditions for the army/navy game. we're definitely seeing temperatures remaining in the

40s through the weekend. mike? >> thank you, olga. friday is here. that means it is cool schools time. this week, the big yellow bus is stopping in oakton, virginia. it is not often we do a story on preschoolers but this one really got our attention when we found out how tech savvy 4 and 5-year-olds could be. these little ones might be able to teach you a thing or two about the ipad. take a look. >> wake your ipad up. find your camera app. >> reporter: they aren't even in kindergarten yet and the little ones are already in touch with the hottest technology on the market. is it hard to take pictures with an ipad or easy? >> it is easy. >> it is easy? >> so, what is your next thing you have to find? >> three green things. >> 4 and 5-year-olds in oakton, virginia, are learning counting, colors and shapes by capturing the images themselves. >> what shape is that?

>> that's a square. >> you got it! every student has their own ipad 2 which will travel with them year to year. >> things that they used to main do with paper and pencil will now be done on their electronic devices in a much more creative and fluid way. >> reporter: learning the building blocks of the technology now helps prepare them for the future. >> that's an interesting thought. >> it seems the future is already here. >> is that a video? >> yes. >> they may only be 4 or 5- year-olds but they already know the lingo. guys, take a picture of cameraman felix! as these preschoolers easily point, shoot and swipe through the new technology -- >> got it! >> they're already doing a little teaching, too. which the grownups think is pretty cool. >> because the kids are so good at it, they're helping create ways we can incorporate it even deeper. >> what do you like best about working with ipad?
