>> leslie johnson was involved in a major corruption case. scott broom has been following the story. he joins us from the courthouse in greenbelt, maryland. scott? >> reporter: of course, that corruption case is all about johnson's interaction with her husband. now convicted jack johnson in this bribery scheme here in the county. johnson came to the courthouse facing 12 to 18 months in federal prison and a $30,000 fine according to the federal sentencing guidelines. today, the prosecutors say she should definitely be punished on the high end of that. johnson, of course, is the one caught on tape flushing $100,000 bribe check down the toilet and caught with $80,000 stuffed in her underwear. the prosecutor david copperwhite saying "this was not a one-time event. this was no lapse in judgment. this was not a slip." copperwhite went on to say this

is planned corruption, the plan was to put leslie johnson on the council and continue business as usual. of course, on the other side, johnson's defense lawyer, shawn wright is making her argument inside saying that johnson did make only a ten-minute lapse of judgment in this case. she said "it was her instinct to protect her husband of 35 years, jack johnson. that's why she reacted the way she did." johnson's side is asking only for probation in this case. right now, leslie johnson still sitting at the defense table. the judge is expected to take a break after this prosecution and defense argument and after that lunchtime break, we're finally expecting to hear from leslie johnson herself. the question, will it be 12 to 18 years and a $30,000 fine or will it be probation like

johnson's side is asking for. we'll know after the lunchtime break. reporting live, scott broom, 9news now. >> we know earlier this week, leslie johnson's husband, jack johnson, the former prince george's county executive was sentenced to seven years, three months in federal prison with a $100,000 fine. scott will continue to follow that story. as soon as we get information, we'll bring to to you. right now, we'll focus on the murder of a virginia tech police officer and the latest in that investigation. this morning, we got an update from virginia state police. they have not identified the gunman in the case but they say that he was not a virginia tech student. the government shot and killedderrer -- the man shot and killed officer deriek crouse. he was an army veteran and a father of five. he had just pulled over a car during a traffic stop when he

was shot. investigators will look at the dash camera video to see if that gives them anymore clues as to why this happened. >> as far as motive, that's also -- that's very much the fund. al part of the investigation right now is determining what -- for what reason this man -- approached officer crouse and took his life. >> the body of the gunman has been taken to the medical examiner's office in roanoke. toxicology tests are being conducted to find out if there were any drugs or alcohol in the shooter's system. this tragedy brought a lot of flashbacks to that shooting rampage that occurred at virginia tech four years ago. peggy fox is now on the campus and she's getting some reaction from the community. >> we're seeing many solemn faces on the campus of virginia tech this morning. some students are a bit relieved that the shooter this time turned out not to be a

student but mostly there is shock and disbelief which has turned to sadness in questioning why officer deriek crouse was killed. this morning, at the spot where he was gunned down, just before dawn, another police officer pulled up and got out of his car and prayed at that very spot. >> deriek crouse was a friend to many in the department. he was a husband, he was a father. he was a son. and i ask that you keep deriek crouse's family in your prayers and thoughts. police officers develop many close bonds when you work together in many stressful situations. and this -- his death is a tremendous loss to our department. each and every one of us. >> reporter: there were many prayers last night at an impromptuer impromptu vigil. >> 32 victims of the 2007

massacre. >> shocked that it happened again. >> this time they mourn for deriek crouse. unlike in 2007, tech sent alerts out immediately and often. >> it is not real until you're on campus that day and you get the text, gunshots fired. lockdown. go inside, lock your doors. >> police say officer crouse was killed during a traffic stop near the stadium. the gunman, who is not involved in the traffic stop, walked up and shot the officer then fled. >> is this really happening again? i wasn't here for the first shooting but it was just terrible. i was shocked. it was a tragedy. >> authorities won't talk about a motive. the shooter was found dead of a gunshot wound a half-mile away. >> just devastating. i can't believe something like that can happen? again. it is so unfortunate. >> the students are planning another vigil in memory of officer deriek crouse here on the drill field tonight at

6:30. in blacksburg, i'm peggy fox. back to you. >> thank you, peggy. we'll have more from virginia tech tonight on 9news now beginning at 5:00 p.m. and of course, we'll have updates throughout the day on our web site at wusa9.com. virginia state police have identified the trooper shot in the line of duty yesterday afternoon. senior trooper m. h. hamer was wounded while investigating reports of a man walking along southbound i-95 in caroline county. police say that the trooper found the pedestrian and put him in his car. there was a fight that broke out and then shots. it is unclear right now how many guns were involved or who fired the shots. the suspect suffered life- threatening injuries. the trooper's injuries are serious but they are not life- threatening. today, virginia democrats are heading to court. the issue is which party will control the state senate?

right now, the parties are evenly split, 20/20. lieutenant-governor bill bolling has the tie-breaking vote. and he's a republican. democrats say that he should not have a stay say in things like committee and organization. there is a lot of bad news today but we do have a good story. a homecoming for two local marines! [ cheering ] , that's lieutenant corporal scott motley from alexandria, virginia! and lieutenant corporal petey johnson from fort washington, maryland. they arrived at national airport last night after spending a tour of duty in afghanistan and they were glad to see so many welcoming faces! >> it didn't hit me until right before we were going to land. i got a text from my pastor

it is bad news when it comes to our taxes because the current deal to keep the payroll tax extension going is dead. senate majority leader harry reid says the senate will not take up a republican plan to keep the cut going. in exchange for approving a controversial oil pipeline. if the tax cut expires at the end of the year, it will cost

the average american family about $1,000 a year. prosecutors are looking into the abuse scandal at penn state. they're focused on former assistant football coach jerry sandusky. but now, there are questions about what his wife may have known. ines ferre has that story. >> reporter: the wife of jerry sandusky is responding to allegations that she may have known her husband was sexually abusing boys in their home. dottie san dusky says she has been devastated by the false accusations that such a terrible incident ever occurred in my home. she said she and her husband don't know why the young men have made the false accusations but we want everybody to know they're untrue. at least one accuser told a grand jury that sandusky's wife was home while he was attacked in the basement and screamed for help. >> mr. sandusky, any comments? >> the former penn state assistant football coach is under house arrest facing more

than 50 counts of child sex abuse. his attorney says the scandal will overshadow the sanduskys forever. >> even if somehow jerry comes out of this without being convicted, there are lives that are ruined. >> sandusky has a preliminary court hearing obtuse. several accusers are expected to speak including victim one. in the grand jury report, victim one testified sandusky abused him more than 20 times between 2007 and 2008. his lawyer is angry that sandusky denies all of the allegations. >> it is adding insult to injury to first, serially abuse victim one, my client and then on top of it, to effectively call him a liar. >> the 67-year-old sandusky admits showering with boys in a nonsexual way but claims he never did anything criminal. ines ferre for cbs news, pennsylvania. this time of the year, many of us bake a lot of sweets,

especially chocolate chip cookies. and some of us eat the dough. well, now the government says don't do that! the centers for disease control and prevention says that raw cookie dough should never be eaten. and that's whether it is homemade or from a package. but don't worry! cookie dough ice cream, however, is ok. well, a lot of people in our newsroom are wearing sweaters today because it is cold! olga breese is in for howard with a full forecast. olga? >> i've gone beyond the sweater. i've taken out the hat, the scarf, i went out without the gloves right now. if you're in the sunshine, it feels great outside. however in the shade, a little cold and a little breezy. our forecast is going to stay chilly through the weekend. aisle's let you know what to expect next week and when we'll have another opportunity for rain coming our way. all of that when 9news continues.

in scotland, they're having one of the worst storms in 25 years. 150-mile-per-hour winds. lots of rain. and, as you can see, look at those waves! thousands of residents are without power, schools closed early. and of course, dozens of flights have been delayed or canceled! wow! >> nothing like that in our area thank goodness. >> bone chilling cold. little cold but the sun is shining. >> that's the silver lining. we've got the sunshine sticking around. temperaturewise, we're really on par with where we should be this time of the year. but the problem is if you are in the shade, you're not getting any of the benefit from the sunshine. our temperatures are definitely on the cool side. we've had improvements since we started out this morning. we're looking pretty good in and around the region. our forecast for today is going to take us through the 40s. we're sitting at about 44

degrees right now. we'll keep climbing through the afternoon and most of us should top out into the upper 40s to near 50 degrees by about the 3:00, 4:00 hour. that will be about it. then as the sun begins to set later on this afternoon, we'll watch the temperatures start to bottom down again. mainly clear skies through much of the afternoon. when we get into the evening hours, about 7:00 to 8:00, you'llth in the cloud cover starting to move in with earnest after 9:00 and into the overnight hours, we'll see more of the cloudy conditions coming on our way. there is a front on the way coming through. it will shift our winds out of the north. we're not expecting it to bring rain along with it. that's a good thing as well. satellite and radar, it has been very quiet all morning long. we've seen a lot of clearing skies and sunshine. all of the precipitation off to the north and west has been staying there. ohio and areas in toward indiana and michigan have been seeing lots of snow over the last 24 hours. not coming in our direction. most of that cooler stuff is going to stay to our north.

what is sticking around for us though, very cool temperatures. outside right now, we're sitting only at 46 for manassas. 48 for leesburg. look closer to the water, we get more warmth there as touchdowns closer to 51 for annapolis. the forecast will continue with the sunshine. winds out of the south and then begin to move as we head in toward the overnight to more northerly winds. today, we'll finish off our work week with a sunny and cool afternoon. a very pleasant friday. however, the clouds will start to move on in late in the day. it shouldn't put a damper on your evening plans. enjoy but make sure you bundle up. it will be cold today. colder tomorrow and we'll continue with this trend right on through the weekend. it could affect some of the football games plenty of people are planning to take part in. not much to talk about. a little bit of a cloud cover into the afternoon as we head through saturday though, sunshine returns though. i definitely would not cancel any of your plans. in fact, it would be a pretty good afternoon tomorrow as well

but a bit on the cool side. overnight tonight, we're back down into the 30s. most of us stay above freezing. however, north and west of town, we could see temperatures down into the upper 20s and lower 30s. tomorrow, a little cooler than today. again, it is the north winds to keep our temperatures into the 40s for the most part by tomorrow afternoon and evening. here's how we look for the seven-day forecast. first three days, fantastic. 50 today. we'll get down to about 43 for your saturday. by sunday, we rebound just a little bit and the next seven days, well, back to normal. 50 for monday, tuesday, wednesday, a very nice stretch before our next chance of rain on thursday. 9news now continues in just a few minutes.
