police, police officer derek krause was sitting in a patrol car along washington street near the intersection of spring road. >> reporter: police say krause was than approached by a man who shot and killed officer krause before the four year veteran could get off a shot. at that point the suspect allegedly changed his clothes in a nearby greenhouse. >> about a half hour after officer krause was killed and about a half mile away the suspect was seen by a sheriff's deputy acting suspiciously in the virginia tech parking lot. they lost sight of him at one point, when he finally did locate him he found him laying on the ground and suffered what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> police say as far as they can tell right now the suspect had no to either virginia tech or to officer krause. as a result, the question on many people's minds tonight, why? remains unanswered. police would not comment on

the suspect's criminal record, nor on any possible history of mental illness. they would say they are waiting for the result of toxicology testing to see if the suspect was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the shooting. anita. matt, as you said, why? our team coverage of the virginia tech shootings continues. >> reporter: joining us live from the campus a candlelight vigil is planned for just a bit later tonight. ken? >> reporter: that vigil scheduled for 6:30 on the dry line field at the virginia tech campus. we have been out here talking to folks, talking to people. today we spoke to a lot of folks here. truth be told. it isn't coming easy on the hokie nation. the emotion and pain is still raw at virginia tech. fellow officer gene des integer was seen saying a prayer at the site where the officer was shot and killed. at the officer's house police

stood guard over the grieving family. back on campus the hokie community is trying to get back on their feet. >> more cops than usual, a little less stressful than yesterday. >> we have had tragedies, 2007 and yesterday. i mean, it is tragic that that happens, but it doesn't make tech a bad place. >> reporter: students were supposed to be taking final exams today, but the testing has been postponed until tomorrow. despite that, students are having a hard time focusing on anything but the horror that once again struck. after the tragedy of the officer being shot, it was absolutely terrible. but i could feel people coming closer together. >> reporter: the students say they are going to cram some last minute studying before 6:30, before they head on over to the drill field. this is where the vigil is expected to take place. there was one last night where upwards of 100 people showed up i'm told tonight's vigil is expected to bring in clouds of

over 1000. freshman julia fielding was leaving a nearby building in the moments after the shooting. she saw what happened when police officers opened the door to officer krause's cruiser. >> the officer in the driver's seat fell on you onto the ground -- out, onto the ground. when i saw his face, it was covered in blood. so i immediately knew that he had to have been shot in the face or head or both. >> we are also getting inside campus buildings while the school was on lockdown yesterday, this is youtube video from inside a building. >> do not leave this room until you are told. do you understand? >> yes, sir. >> you can see a man in military gear telling those students to stay put. the video shows other police officers with weapons drawn, making sure all the students are safe. fear, shock and disbelief

has turned to sadness on the campus. just before dawn, another police officer pulled up, got out of his car and prayed right at the shot where officer krause was shot and killed. there were also prayers at a candlelight vigil at the virginia tech memorial for the 2007 massacres. unlike then, virginia tech sent out alerts and often. >> it is not real until you are on campus that day and you get the text, gunshots fired, lockdown, go inside and lock the doors. >> i wasn't here for the first shooting, but it was just terrible, i was in shock. it was a tragedy. tonight's vigil is expected to draw many people. let's look at what we know

about the time line. 12:15 yesterday officer derek krause stopped a vehicle near the coliseum parking lot. he was shot and killed after being approached by an unknown man. the man then ran to a nearby greenhouse when he apparently changed clothes there, leaving his old clothes behind in a backpack. a montgomery county sheriff's deputy noticed a male pedestrian acting strangely. the deputy found the man laying on the ground with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. around midnight ballistics confirmed the bullets from both shootings came from the same weapon. for more including a photo gallery of the lockdown and manhunt on campus, log on to our website. former prince georges council member leslie johnson is headed to prison. today johnson was sentenced to serve a year and a day and

another two years of supervised release for trying to take bribes for her husband. scott has details. >> it is it is the first time we have heard from johnson since all of this began. she admitted today she hid the money but she denied right to the end she knew anything more about the bribery scheme her husband was involved with. >> reporter: leslie johnson had no choice but to admit guilt after the world heard this. >> what do you want me to do with this monday any. >> put it in your panties and walk out of the house. >> reporter: johnson, stuffing bribe money her underwear, and flushing a $100,000 check with the toilet with the fbi banging on the door. in court today, johnson said i'm extremely sorry for and ashamed of my conduct. her lawyer called it a thoughtless and instinctive reaction to protect her husband of 35 years. johnson denied she was part of jack johnson's bribery schemes.

turn himself in, and go to prison in north carolina. it is the same minimum security prison where martha stewart did her time. we now have new information tonight in that super involved shooting on i-95 in northern virginia. the shooting late in the afternoon tied-up traffic for hours. throughout the evening rush and even beyond that, virginia state police now say the man shot during a struggle with the trooper was now died. armando tool joins us live with more. >> reporter: it certainly was a mess here on i-95 yesterday. as you said we know more about what happened but we do not know why the suspect exact as he did. actions that would lead to his death at the hands of a state

trooper. police say 32-year-old herbert wheel abandoned his car in the median and need on foot after being stopped for reckless driving thursday afternoon. shortly after wheeler was spotted walking near mile marker 116 by a trooper who tried to arrest him. >> a struggle ensued and shots were fired inside the vehicle. >> reporter: police say wheeler tried to get the trooper's service weapon. that is when the officer was shot in the leg. the injured trooper then shot wheeler with a second gun. wheeler was medevaced here. he died of his injuries this morning. trooper haimer was also brought to the hospital. he is recovering. it is not clear why the chesterfield man initially fled the scene. the incident created a driver's nightmare during afternoon rush hour on one of the busiest corridors on the east coast. virginia state police continue to investigate this

case. it is not closed by any means and hopefully we will have more information in the coming days. the best news of course trooper haimer is recovering. a former principal is heading to prisonton. joshua myers was given a five year sentence for receiving child pornography. myers is considered a rising star in the school system. he told undercover officers he had traveled to california to have sex with a child? a woman walking home from work in alexandria, telling a terrifying storiton. she said a man grabbed her from behind and touched her inappropriately on little street near the intersection of east maple avenue. the woman started streaming screaming and the man apparently ran off toward walnut street. police are now investigating

whether the cases are linked no police are searching for a man and woman they say jacked a tax and i finally went shopping at target. a cold front is on the way, even a colder weekend. we'll tell you what that means for the games. the wife of former stan coach jerry sandusky breaks her silence. i'll have that story, coming up.

i'm matthew barry from arlington virginia, i want to give a shout out to my mom and dad and sister and all my friends. merry christmas, see you soon. tonight prosecutors continue to build their sex abuse case against former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky. now questions are being raised about what his wife knew. >> reporter: the wife of jerry sandusky is responding to allegations that she may have known her husband was sexually abusing boys in their home. through her husband's attorney, dottie sandusky says she has been devastated by the false accusations that such a

terrible incident ever occurred in my home. she says she and her husband don't know why these young men have made these false accusations, but we want everyone to know they are untrue. one accuser told the grand jury sandusky's wife was home while he was attacked in the basement and yelled for help. the former coach is under house arrest. his attorney says the scandal will overshadow the sanduskys forever. >> public opinion convicted jerry the first day these charges were filed. >> reporter: sandusky has a preliminary court hearing on tuesday. several of his accusers are expected to speak, including victim one. in the grand jury report victim one testified sandusky abused him more than 20 times between 2007 and 2008. his lawyer is angry that sandusky denies all the allegations. >> it is adding insult to

injury to first serially abuse victim one, my client, and then on top of it, to effectively call him a liar. the 67-year-old sandusky admits showering with boys in a nonsexual way, but claims he never did anything criminal. and a new poll out there shows people in pennsylvania support the firing of penn state coach joe paterno. critics say he could have done more to stop that alleged abuse. a former student accused of secretly taping his roommate having sex with another man has turned down a plea deal. that means he will go to trial in february. the case of alleged cyber bullying made headlines all across the country. the alleged spying happened in september of last year. ravi, now faces a 15-count

indictment. a proposed merger was voted down hours ago. the vote was unanimous. board did call for steps to bring in the merger. a 68-year-old college student, you heard it right -s in custody tonight, accused of robbing him campus bookstore. the robbery in boone county, ohio was caught on tape. investigators say james summers jr. asked for a printer cartridge at the bookstore yesterday morning. when the manager said they didn't have any, summers allegedly pulled out a large knife and demanded cash. sky 9 over i-95 in northern virginia where new highway signs could make your next trip a little bit smoother. starting monday the electronic message signs will keep drivers posted about realtime travel signs.

caught on tape. an armed robbery outside a southeast washington home. surveillance video from the 2900 block of nelson place on october 14th shows the suspect grabbing the victim while pointing a gun at his head. during the struggle the victim hands over his wallet, the suspect lets go and the victim falls backward. the suspect starts to chase

after the man, who eventually runs off, if you have any information about what is happening in this video, please call dc police. now to a story about a cab by who got taken for a ride literally by out of control passengers. police are asking for your help to help identify this duo. lindsay mathis reports the couple could face kidnapping charges. >> reporter: a cab picks up a couple wednesday evening. they ask to go to target in rockville. >> he was placed in fear from the very beginning. they were very rude and aggressive toward him. >> reporter: once they arrived here at target, all three got out of the cab. police say the driver was forced into the passenger seat and one of the suspects got behind the wheel. they drove off, but eventually ended up back here at target and went shopping. >> the suspect was able to drive the cab and get stuck on the median. as he was backing off the

median he struggle a passing car. >> reporter: captain paul starks with montgomery county police says the suspect didn't stop. when they got back to target they didn't pay the fare either. the couple walks into the store and stands directly under the camera while they prepare their shopping trip. they leave with a cart full of items. the female suspect appears to be pregnant. because of what allegedly happened the couple could face theft, assault, carjack and go possibly kidnapping charges. >> this is an odd sequence of events, but we'll know more once we speak with the suspects involved. >> reporter: the cab by tried to contact police in the beginning but was told. >> that would not be a good idea. >> reporter: when they were done shopping the couple got away. they took another cab. anyone with information the

number to call is on the bottom of your screen 240-773-6084. prince william county is far too familiar with copper thieves. in the last six months have been six incidents of copper thefts across that county. a copper theft last weekend almost turned deadly. >> it could have blew up, definitely. >> reporter: joe is talking about his vacant second home. on monday he showed up and smelled oil coming from the -- from his basement. the cause? thieves are ripped the copper piping from the heating tank. the oil had been spilling out for days. >> reporter: these copper thieves broke through a window, tried to break through the back door before finally slamming this piece of wood through the front window.

>> reporter: three days later joe and his wife were packing up. they know all too well these copper thieves target rural, vacant homes, typically those under construction. >> we are taking our computer systems and stuff out of here so they don't steel the rest of it. >> reporter: there were computers inside this home, but the chiefs only stole between $0 to $40 worth of copper. >> there was a lot of things in here they could have stole worth more money. >> reporter: prince william county police are still investigating. but so far no reads. in fact the price of copper is only about $3.50 a pound, down $1 from a tie in 2010. a veteran's day former fbi agent gone -- a video of a former fbi agent gone missing in iran. is now surfacing. in it he pleads for help and says he is not in good health. the ap delayed releasing the

video because the government said it would jeopardize efforts to bring levenson home. today iran showed off what it claims to be a united states drone. they claim to have shot it down in the eastern part of iran. iran is condemning what it says is united states violation of its air space. in india, a fire devastated a hospital earlier today, killing at least 88 people. now six hospital staffers are charged with culpable homicide. the staff was accused of abandoning amany of the patients to die. the fire started in the basement of the most of the victims suffocated. eight 18 wheeler trucks carrying hundreds of wreaths made their way to our area today. the project is called wreaths

across america. the convoy stopped near annapolis before heading to the district. the journey started in maine last sunday and will end tomorrow morning with a ceremony at the memorial amphitheater near the tomb of the unknown. the wreaths were made by 175,000 volunteers from all 50 states. hundreds of children and spouses of fallen united states military heroes took off from washington on an all expense paid trip to dallas today. the nonprofit snowball express banded together with american airlines and american eagle. there were festivities at reagan national airport. >> this event has been great for us. we didn't have the best experience you know, coming from you know, when my husband passed, we weren't really treated that great. in the last year and a half, we

caught on tape. a fire bombing at the santa barbara county sheriff's office. this surveillance video from last month shows a suspect throwing two molotov cocktails at the building. no one was hurt but there was damage to the outside of the building. police are offering a $5000 reward to help catch the suspect. now look at this video of what looks like the houston police department under investigation. five men wearing badges and carrying weapons storm in, in raid jackets and come into an

illegal game room. the men are suspects in at least three armed robberies at illegal gaming rooms in the houston area. they even arrive at what looks like an undercover police cruiser. equipped with a siren and police lights. investigators say they have gotten away with about $20,000. now police hope this surveillance video will help lead them to those false cops. talk about your grand entrance, a pair of suspected thieves crashed an suv right through the door of an indiana gun shop. they got a rifle. handgun and silencer all worth about $10,000. the damage to the store $35,000. police on the look out for these characters. a school bus driver in tacoma, washington is on leave after apparently falling asleep behind the wheel. surveillance video showed the driver starting to nod off.

or on the actual holiday. also, pack light, and consider a connecting flight to get the best price. well the holiday season can be fun for couples but also bring on stress. men and women have very different approaches for how they budget how they spend for the holidays. >> it is the time of year when everyone is supposed to be happy. but shopping for gifts in this fragile economy can also put people on edge and take a toll on couples. website the nest.com found 69% of couples say they do plan a holiday budget together at the beginning of the season but 73% of the people surveyed say they do the bulk of the shopping. couples who worked as a teem seemed the most stress-free. >> they go out with a certain mentality. this is how much we are spending and we are not going to go beyond that.

weekend is all about the army navy football game. it is just as important to each member of the student body. this week pep rallies trumped just about everything else. in fact, i went back to my old stomping grounds this week to get a reminder of how the brigade does army week. >> wretched weather. a quiet night on the yard in annapolis. this is army week. pep rally night. rain moved the festivities inside. trust me, nothing doused this party. it is the only phrase you need to know here. serious business in these parts. storm troopers necessary. a cover band? have mercy babe, i hope you don't mind. no problem. >> reporter: nothing makes a brigade cheer more, body surf more, jump around more than the mere thought of another win over army, which, by the way, would

cap off a decade of dominance. here's my question. why is army so bad? >> because they are not navy and we are none one. >> reporter: truer words have never been spoken. >> it wasn't like this when i went to school here in the 90s. this place is jam packed. standing room only. we know it is jam packed out there. look at these guys, they are just trying to get a seat. how is the view from up here? >> a party complete with every ingredient necessary. ice, smoke, gorilla suit, a bad christmas sweater and cute kids all gathered for one purpose. to root on the home team. the only time the done died down -- din, dade down, singing of the alma mater. by the way the band you saw

friday's here. that means it is cool sportstime again. this woke our big yellow bus is stopping in oakton, virginia. not often do we do stories about the preschoolers, but we found out how tech savvy four and five-year-olds are these days. they may even be able to teach you a thing or two about the ipad. >> wake our ipad up. find your camera app. >> reporter: they aren't even in kindergarten yet and these little ones are already in touch with the hottest technology on the market. is it hard to take pictures
