gunman. >> reporter: police held a news conference this morning but did not release a lot of information. a makeshift memorial has gone up at the spot where officer derek krause lost his life. he was just sitting in his patrol car yesterday when the shooter approached on food and opened fire. the shooter then changed his clothes in a likely attempt to evade police. >> taking off a pull over top, and wool cap and putting them in a backpack which he then left at the greenhouses. >> reporter: police believe the gunman is the same man who held up a real estate office earlier. virginia tech is offering counseling to students and there is a candlelight vigil for officer krause later this

evening. >> reporter: the vigil is scheduled for 30 minutes from now. folks say this is the same place where they had the vigil three years ago. they didn't want to have to do the same thing in the same place, for the for the same reason. but they are having to do it and they are trying to stay strong. life on virginia tech's campus is slowly getting back on track. but one day since tragedy struck here again the friday routine anything but normal. >> reporter: it is easier now, knowing the situation has been handled. but your mind still wand enters our hearts are going out to the officer who died. >> reporter: students preparing for finals say it's been tough to focus on the studying. the horror still has people here rattled. >> still a bit of shock and definitely grieving -e i honestly we realize our time here is precious. >> reporter: those sentiments are now turning into grief and warning. hundreds are expected to turn

out for a candlelight vigil to honor officer derek krause. his family home was visibly guarded by police today as his family grieved. >> we can let them know we support them and we know the hardship they are going through that is 30 minutes from now. students are starting to arrive here as well as other people of the hokie community. we have learned a couple of minutes ago a funeral has been planned for 2:00 p.m. monday at the castle coliseum for officer krause. guys? >> reporter: ken we are going to share something right now before we leave you. we have breaking news just come in. the shooter has been identified as a 22-year-old from radford university named ross ashley. that is the identity of the individual who shot officer krause and then turned the gun

on himself. 22-year-old radford university student ross ashley. a chesterfield, virginia man has died that left a man wounded. dead is 32-year-old per better wheeler. wheeler ran off, trooper michael haimer spotted wheeler walking across long the interstate and forced him into his patrol car. wheeler reached for the trooper's gun, it went off and wounded the trooper in the leg. then the trooper shot wheeler with another gun and wheeler passed away from his injuries this morning. one of the neighbors is shocked by this incident. >> honestly a docile guy. i would never have pictured him as going that far. >> reporter: the trooper is expected to make a full recovery. the police chief in frederick, maryland says there has been an uptick in shoplifting as we head into the holidays. the chief says shoppers can do

a better job of protecting themselves simply by paying attention to what's going on around you. here's a case police are calling odd. a taxi cab picks up a couple in bethesda. the passengers complain about the driving and refuse to pay. they force the driver into the passenger seat and took him for a ride the suspect is. as he was backing off the median, he struck a passing car. didn't stop, and proceeded back to the target store. >> now captain paul starks with montgomery county police says the couple then went back to target. they went shopping and got away by taking another taxi. police are still looking to identify the suspect a pretty

familiar pattern. rural vacant homes are targeted and thieves rip out all the copper they can get away with. joe found hundreds of gallons of oil in his basement. thieves are ripped the copper piping from his heating tank. >> we are taking our stuff out of here. the thieves bypass aid lot more valuable things in the home and stole only $0 or $40 worth of copper. former prince georges county council member leslie johnson was sentenced to a year behind bars today. scott broom reports she continues to deny she knew anything about jack johnson's shake down. >> reporter: leslie johnson had no choice but to admit guilt after the word heard this. >> what do you want me to do with this monday any they are banging. >> put it in your panties and

walk out of the house. >> in court today johnson said i'm extremely sorry for and ashamed of my conduct. her lawyer called it a thoughtless and instinctive reaction to protect her husband of 35 years johnson denied she was part of jack johnson's bribery schemes. that doesn't pyeatt with me, you are not an innocent spouse. johnson was elect to the prince georges count thank you council -- county council, just as her husband jack was term limited out. he is overheard on monitored phone calls telling one investor leslie would continue to take care of you. the prosecutor said there was no lapse in judgment, there was not a slip. after sentencing johnson fled out a back door leaving stunned supporters to continue to defend her. >> i don't think she probably knew all along like they are saying.

i'm lieutenant daniel buckles. shout out to my fiance, friends and family back in arlington, virginia. let's go back to the breaking news about the suspect in yesterday's virginia tech shooting. police again identifying the gunman as a 22-year-old college student at nearby radford university. ross truth ashley. he killed an officer at virginia tech and then killed himself. ashley had stolen a car wednesday from a real estate office in the town of radford. they have no idea about any possible motive. dc's most colorful politician is going hollywood. at least his story is. marion berry will be the focus of a new hbo movie in the works.
