park. lindsey, what happened? >> reporter: bruce, it all began this afternoon at the sonoco. the picture was inside paying for gas. when he got out, he realized a 19-year-old had gotten into his porsche. he told the worker in the lot, call 911. he approached the suspect, was stabbed multiple times and then the suspect gets back into his own vehicle and things get even worse. >> as opposed to leaving the lot, got in his car and drove it straight at the victim's car, ramming the victim's car. then he fled the lot. >> reporter: police were already at the scene by the time the suspect was leaving. two police cars tried to chase him, but eventually they lost track. then. >> the vehicle went out of control and hit three of occupied vehicles. >> it was going really close, probably a hundred miles an hour and he lost control and flipped.

>> reporter: the suspect gets out of the red ford focus and one of the females catches up with him and tazes him. but it has no effect. >> he attacked her. she did not even get close to him. he pursued her, attacked her, got her down on the ground, was assaulting her when our officer, second officer arrived. >> reporter: the chief says that officer felt he had no other choice but to open fire. >> she heard five shots, and the kid, person was on the ground. >> reporter: the suspect later died at the hospital. >> we wonder if he was under the influence of something. i mean, his behavior is abnormal. >> reporter: and police are still trying to find out whether that suspect actually owned that red vehicle. they wonder, because they believe he was the only one involved in the attempted carjacking, and if that was the case, he would have had to leave that car there and taken off with the porsche. police are very concerned about the victim. the victim is in critical condition, in surgery, fighting for his life.

reporting live in tacoma park,i'm lindsey mastis. bruce, back to you. party goers are assaulted at a university of maryland off campus party. it happened early this morning. two men tried to crash that metro but were denied entry. they returned later witnesses said. one of the men reportedly showed a handgun and robbed party goers of their personal belongings. nobody was hurt. the university sent out a crime alert. tonight police are searching for the suspects. the widow of the slain virginia tech police officer says she and her husband exchanged text messages about an hour before he was killed. tina crouse said they met in high school and reconnected years later after their first marriages didn't work out and he had been deployed to iraq. police are looking for a motive of why ross ashley shot dereik crouse on thursday and then killed himself. the 22-year-old had broken up with his girlfriend over the

summer and vaguely mentioned some family issues with friends. but he was loyal and he never hinted of plans for violence according to friends and former classmates. the alleged killer came from a small town. armando trull reports tonight, his childhood friends were stunned by what has happened. >> i can't, i have problems believing that somebody who was so nice and so personallable could just turn into a killer like that, a cold-blooded killer, you know? >> reporter: the ross ashley that allegedly executed a virginia tech police officer, and then shot himself, is not the same young man that stephen hook remembers from high school. >> if you engaged him in conversation, he was well spoken. when i knew him, he had a plan. he wanted to get into business and he had a plan for his life. >> reporter: ross ashley graduated from high school in 2007. he was a running back on the

school's varsity football team. >> he was a starting fullback. >> reporter: there were no answers to be found at ashley's childhood home in partlow where driveway signs discouraged to those wanting to ask questions. neighbors had little to add. >> he was a clean-cut young guy. but standoffish. >> reporter: more recentacquaintances from the university were at a loss to reconcile the somewhat standoffish business student they knew with a suicidal killer ashley allegedly became. >> what could possibly happen to a person to change in such a way? >> honestly, i can't even -- to me, a question like that is definitely for somebody who has a much better understanding of the human psyche. >> reporter: in partlow, armando trull, 9 news now. the temps dropping overnight. how cold will it be sunday morning. let's go to anny hong. anny? >> reporter: we're talking

about the first possible freeze. that's pretty late. we used to get freezes in november. right now temperatures already cold, especially in the suburbs. in gaithersburg down to 28. hagerstown 28. around downtown 34 annapolis. 39 degrees. temperature is dropping thanks to the clear skies and also the light winds. now, overnight we're facing clear and very cold conditions. maybe a three-blanket night. lows down to 20s to around 30 around downtown. waking up tomorrow you really want to bundle up, especially if you're heading out early. temperatures will be very cold to start. by 9:00, not a whole lot of warming up. it will look pretty, lots of sunshine. only mid-20s to mid-30s at 9:00. then by 11:00, the warmest spots, it will only be 40 degrees. so it's going to struggle to really make it into the 40s maybe in a lot of locations as well. we'll talk when the chances for showers coming up a little bit later. bruce, back to you.

look at newt-romney, they were for the $700 billion bailout. >> reporter: earlier gingrich found himself in a controversy regarding comments he made about the palestinians. >> we've had an invented palestinian people who are in fact arabs. >> reporter: the statement infuriated a palestinian authority spokesman who said gingrich needs a history lesson. during the debate, gingrich did not back down. >> somebody ought to have the courage to tell the truth. these people are terrorists. they teach terrorism in their schools. >> reporter: gingrich's opponents didn't necessarily disagree with him, but challenged his tactics. drew levinson, cbs news. a virginia teenager is free tonight after being held captive in the philippines for five months. kevin lundst man and his mother were abducted by islamic militants back in july while vacationing with relatives. today the lynchburg area teen was released in the

philippines. his mother was freed two months ago. a filipino cousin managed to escape last month. a virginia relative was called with a ransom demand. authorities refused to say if the ransom was paid. panama's foreign ministry say a team of french doctors found noriega fit enough to be extradited. he's expected po arrive in panama where he'll be taken to prison. he's been serving a sentence in france for money laundering following a 17-year sentence here in the u.s. coming up tonight on 9 news now. >> i'm trying to show my grandboys the attributes of being an american citizen, having a constitution that offers them freedom, but freedom isn't free. >> people around the country honoring fallen servicemen and women this weekend. we'll have that story just ahead. and it's over in boston for

one man is dead tonight. a teenager hospitalized after an early morning shooting in northeast washington. it happened at an exxon station in the 4500 block of benning road. d.c. police say 24-year-old stefan way of upper marlboro and a 16-year-old female were shot sitting inside a car. they were taken to a hospital where way later died. we're told the 16-year-old is being treated for nonlife- threatening injuries tonight. police have said little about a possible motive or suspect in this case. also tonight, police are looking for suspects in a restaurant robbery in silver spring, maryland. the victim that just closed the

spring garden restaurant on 16th street last night when two suspects walked up with a handgun. the suspects forced him back inside. they took cash and personal items. volunteers from all over the opportunity took part in wreaths across america today. at arlington national cemetery, volunteers placed some 100,000 holiday wreaths at the graves of fallen veterans. they arrived at after making stops from all along the east coast. in san bruno, california, wreaths were placed at the golden gate cemetery. in alabama, they placed evergreen wreaths on the graves of the fallen. >> i'm trying to show my grandboys the attributes of being an american citizen, having a constitution that offers them freedom, but freedom isn't free. >> we're hoping that more people get involved and donate and honor and remember those that have fought and served and died for their country. >> wreaths were placed in more

than 500 locations across the country. in boston, police evicted protesters who had been camping out since the end of september as part of occupy boston movement. 46 people were arrested early this morning as authorities dismantled the encampment in boston's square. at a news conference later in the day, boston mayor, tom merino expressed support for the demonstrators but says it was necessary for them to leave. >> in the interest of public safety, ultimately we had to act. we did so with patience and respect. >> the city of boston had given protesters until midnight thursday to clear out. but the city waited until early this morning to take action. watch out for lane closures and delays around the wilson bridge next week. construction work will close several lanes on the beltway. the closures will occur near telegraph road in alexandria. on monday and thursday from

november was so mild. a lot of people can feel it in the air. in fact, tonight probably will have the first freeze here around d.c. also we have this beautiful total lunar eclipse. this is taken from sidney, australia. the first to see it. around our area you could see it early this morning, so you missed it by now. interesting this year had a kind of red tone due to less dust in the stratosphere. because we had recent volcanic erun insurance. the next total -- eruntions. ruptions. temperatures, it is cold outside. it's already down to freezing at arlington. roam in bethesda. reston, 27. college park, 30. downtown, we're still holding at 34 degrees. so temperature is dropping

because of the clear skies out there and the light winds. here's a look at your satellite radar picture where we've got high pressure in control, which will keep us dry the next couple of days. lots of sunshine. but very cold air mass in place. 34 in downtown, it feels like 28 when you factor in that north/northwest wind at 7 miles per hour. and we've got clear skies out there. all right, so a very cold to start off your sunday morning, so if you've got plans to go outside, get that christmas tree or go to church. bundle yourself up and the kids especially. also for the redskins game, for tomorrow afternoon's kickoff, sunny and chilly for monday as we head back to work. then we're talking about the possibility of some late week showers. i'll talk more about that in this seven-day forecast. all right, so overnight, clear and very cold conditions, too. even a three blanket night with lows into the low 20s around town. clear and cold for the morning

and you need a coat and sunglasses. temperatures in the 20s and 30s. it will feel really tough to be out there earlier in the day. now, afternoon, it looks gorgeous. sunny but still cold. a good day for all the layers. highs will be only 40 to 45 degrees under light winds. that's the good thing with the winds, it will be light so you won't have to factor in the wind chills. it will feel better tomorrow compared to today. we had gusty conditions. highs for your sunday afternoon, so 45 at arlington. near 40s near in downtown. 44 in bowie. mid-40s annapolis. reston 43. fairfax, leesburg and manassas, you'll get down into the low 40s. so it's going to be a very unseasonably cold day tomorrow. here's a look at your sunday day planner. cold start once again by noon. only 35 to 40 degrees at noon. but lots of sunshine, and then at 5:00, 35 to 40 will still be cold.
